I like Roots Market, but I wish they would get a location closer into downtown Silver Spring because Olney sucks, and it's not the kind of location you can just stop by on your way somewhere. It's a destination that has to be planned and worked into your schedule, unless you live in Olney, of course, and if you do, my condolences. They have a good selection, everything is organic unlike Whole Foods. In fact most of the produce at Whole Foods is NOT organic so I don't think these two should even be compared. This place is a godsend as it's accessible by bike and only a mile away from my home. Really great store layout and friendly, knowledgeable staff. One wrote me an email when they got my favorite Bobbi's jalepeno hummus back in stock. They have really clean and nice customer bathrooms too! As for the price of the food, yes, it is more expensive than Giant. But I think a lot of things are less expensive than Whole Foods and they have sales sometimes on different items. The cheese section is fantastic although I wish they would have more local cheeses (anyone can get cheese from France, man). They are starting to get more local beauty products, which is great. They have local bread (which is not so good, in my opinion). So, in conclusion, I'd tell people to selectively shop here and support the local economy! read more

I'm in Roots at least twice a week. They have a great selection of food, beer/wine, supplements and natural beauty products. Sure, its not as big as Whole Foods, but its a locally owned store (in fact, I frequently see the owner working in the store) and they really take a lot of care in sourcing quality products, often times from other small, local businesses. Yes, a little pricey, so sometimes I have to stock up on basics at Safeway and buy more specialty items from Roots. But I'm one of those consumers who is willing to spend more on my food, so I find a way to make it work usually. Consumers have to realize that Roots isn't setting prices arbitrarily - they are based, in part, on what Roots pays to purchase the items from the companies it stocks. The store has great customer service as well. If they don't stock a product you can often ask them to special order a case of it for you. And the wine/beer specialist is very knowledgeable. read more

You are too expensive and your parking lot is weird to get in and out of. But I'm still glad you are there. I buy my soap there and they have a brand of Organic milk they don't have at the local grocery stores. I avoid the crowds of Whole Foods like the plague, so this is a decent alternative. Employees are generally very good here. Also, they have my new LUV, halloumi cheese. And it's $9.99 here, and I paid $12.99 at Harris Teeter (for a different brand. First off, the parking is pretty terrible. The shopping center is generally empty anyways, but from going down Georgia, you have to make a U-turn and everything, just too complicated. Secondly, the selection is not that large and the one time I go there to buy celery, it's not fresh...at all, not to mention overpriced. The store is pretty small. I was expecting something more Whole Foods like, but I was disappointed. The only upside is that there was a Starbucks next to it, but it was not worth the trip, even though it's like five minutes away from my house. Would rather drive up to Rockville Pike to get to Whole Foods. It's more worth the money and the time. read more

Roots gets 5 stars because it's the perfect combination of upscale and health food shopping experience. Much like My Organic Market, Roots caters to those of use who value organic, locally produced, and non-meat options. However, it also caters to those Whole Food customers who want a more sophisticated experience. My hubs and I live close enough that we rode our bikes to Roots for a sampling of vegetarian and vegan food items. They always have great samples of cheese and other yummy stuff. The prices are to be expected for a specialty food store but not as bad a Whole Foods but close. Those of us who will pay extra for these items won't have sticker shock. They have a great beer section which is surprising since it's not an ABC store...not sure why they get the pass from MoCo on selling beer/wine. They also have a very comprehensive health and wellness department. They have lots of tastings and demos at all Roots locations. I haven't gone to a cooking demo but they have a calendar on their website. read more

I really love this store I use to live near roots and would come here all the time now I travel out my way to come here! The people are always so friendly and willing to help, and they always have the most delicious samples! Today I brought the dried mango because of the sample and it is amazing and I got the sweet potato cake which is the most amazing thing I have ever tasted! *3.5 stars* Yes, some of their products are pricier than at Mom's or Whole Foods. But they carry a lot of great items, including a huge variety of gluten-free foods. As with all places, be on the look-out for specials. I also really liked the little signs that they have up letting you know which products their employees enjoy (similar to signs that bookstores have with book recommendations.) The short aisles do make for awkward maneuvering. If I lived in this neck of the woods, I would probably shop here somewhat regularly. read more

I've been shopping at Roots Mkt Olney for years. I've even made special trips to Roots for my kids their early years for candies, snacks, and croissants. My kids are grown now and were interested in working there while attending college and last summer. Nothing but saga like experiences for them at the Olney location. They were told five different times by the same manager that he would call them and he also told them that he couldn't find their ELECTRONIC applications (???). I concluded that this manager is not interested in my two college boys. Of course this is weird since the kids that do work there are college kids - I've talked to several of them. I simply explained to them what a good manager would do if not interested. Needless to say, Roots loses my family's (brother and sisters too) patronage and happy to know my informed neighbors are disappointed as well. read more

Selection: The range of food products (frozen and packaged) is nice. They carry some local organic/grass fed foods. There is a nice selection of gluten-free baked goods. I like the variety of beers and Kosher wines. There is a variety of organic/environmentally friendly cleaning and health supplies. Price: Not super but not outrageous. Employees: I have only dealt with the cashiers. They are usually friendly and cheery. Parking: I agree with previous reviews as to the parking. Solid Whole Foods-like grocery store. The hot bar is honestly much better than Whole Foods or anywhere else I've been. It's mostly Ethiopian food with some southern mixed in. The chili and soups are good too. Selection is good and they cater to the sustainably raised, hormone free, etc crowd. Samples are solid if you're looking around for something new to try. Well, I am biting the bullet and writing an update to my review from last year. Roots has definitely grown on me, and I find myself stopping here more and more often. I love their hot bar and often stop in to get a few of the items for lunch. I also come to Roots more and more for produce. Their cold sandwiches and take home (heat up later) soups are very good as well. They also have a great cheese station. Roots is probably worth a 3.5 star rating, but since I rated them a 2 last year, I figured a 4 star rating would balance things out to a 3! I just wish Roots had a fresh seafood counter as well as a Butcher Counter. All of their meats are precut and prepackaged and they never seem to have exactly what I want when it comes to steak. I did have some ridiculous tuna from there a few weeks ago. Sushi quality.... but for the most part, they just have salmon, tilapia, and shellfish to choose from. read more

I love, live this market. I don't come here for regular everyday shopping because they are not close to me but stop by often to pick up some items that I only seem to find here. First, it is clean lots of vegan options (even though I'm not vegan or vegetarian). Service is always excellent. Now for some of my favorite items - Sonoma gourmet California Creole simmering sauce, in store made almond butter, exceptional selection of cheeses, Ozery Bakery morning rounds, fig spread (can't recall the brand) and their English muffins. They have a hot food be the has some good food as well. I'm sure there are lots of other yummy finds that I just haven't tried yet. And the best part of the store is that they always have lots of samples and if you bring your own bag you can donate you bag tax to charity! read more

I liked it. It wasn't the best ever. The prices were rough. I wish they'd had more tea. But they sell beer/wine, which is a plus when you're out for a fast grocery trip and want to grab those 2 items. I also really like the fact that they're selling mostly local stuff, which is good in several ways. Their cheese shop is also really well stocked and we picked up some good stuff that I'm having a lot of fun making meals with! They do carry a lot of gluten free and vegan stuff. I'm not too big on that stuff, but I have to admit...my eyes encouraged me to buy a package of brownies that turned out to be really tasty. My wife, on the way home, points out "hey, these are vegan brownies we're eating. Shouldn't they suck?" I'd never been here before but wanted to make more of an effort to eat organic as often as possible. I loathe Whole Foods, though, so I was looking for alternatives. My friends absolutely LOVE Roots, so I popped in on a Sunday evening to check it out. First off, it smells fresh, like an organic grocery store should. I really appreciated that all the eggs and dairy I looked at had labels about the vendor's rating (good, very good, great, etc) and that they sold alcohol right there in the store. I had no idea you could do that in MD! The staff was super friendly and helpful, to boot. I'm only reducing one star because everything was obscenely expensive, a dollar or two more than the same brands have been at Trader Joe's, Fresh Market, etc. I don't think I'll make this my primary store, but really recommend them for specialty items. They almost always have free samples (lots of fruit and other random stuff), so I like to spend a good 10 minutes snacking before I think about buying anything. I love the salads from the refridgerated section - especially the gonzo salad and edamame salad. I feel like Roots is my second home. I go to Roots multiple times a week. Roots has a wonderful selection and variety of food. I'm vegan and they have tons of choices for me. They have organic produce, a great choice of gluten free foods, as well as meats and cheeses. Although I have gotten the occasional product that has gone bad, Roots customer service is terrific and they've always been willing to let me replace the product. The fact that some of the food may go bad is also okay considering that their foods aren't stuffed with preservatives and additives. read more

Though I did not think I would be, I am a huge fan of roots. Very happy that we have this store in Olney. Selection: The store has taken suggestions and improved a lot. They have an AMAZING selection of high quality food for such a small store. Grass-Fed Beef and Milk, High Quality Cheeses, Organic Fruits and Veggies, nice hot and cold bar, a wide variety of gluten-free products, many different cooking oils, and just a LOT of different stuff. This has led to quite a bit of visits per week :). Service: I am always impressed with the service of both the representatives and the cashiers. All are very friendly and are as helpful as possible. Leaps and bounds better than I have had in Giant and Safeway. They are also receptive to suggestions and listen to their customers, I am appreciative of this. Atmosphere/Decor: The store has a nice set up and many free samples which give it a pleasant atmosphere. You can try cheeses which I like. I find it easy to walk around and it has more of a "homey" feel than the humongous stores like safeway. Prices: As has been mentioned, they are higher on some things. Most products however are about the same and others aren't too high that I would trade the convenience of buying them here in Olney for trekking to Rockville and paying less. Their meat products (especially buffalo and lamb) I do however, as they are quite a bit higher then I can find at other places. VERDICT: A great store and everything I look for in the stores I shop at. They are receptive to customer comments, service is friendly, selection is good and atmosphere is pleasant. I basically do all my shopping at Roots because I know they are devoted to very high standards. As far as I know, all of their produce is fair-trade, and the majority of the store is vegan. You'll pay a tiny bit more here than you would at Giant or another major chain, but you're paying for items that meet high ethical standards, and that makes the difference. The hot bar is awesome, and their prepared foods are often really on-point. I've moved further away, but I drive half an hour to go to Roots because they go above and beyond what a grocery store typically does in order to provide the public with more just and fair choices. read more
