Seeing I will be there shortly and won't be walking home and as a consequence will not be able to completely quench this significant thirst inside the establishment. We shall see what we shall see soon, for as this is the last night I can do such things before heading west for a while. I'm thankful this visit was long enough to permit two visits to the rooted establishment. If they opened a 2.0 that's what they should call it. Rooted on Main Street. Tasty treats and ample cerveza offerings. Spirits for those that enjoy Halloween all year round. Art by local artists on the walls and some you can take with you evening of. Others you must wait for, but that makes your heart grow fonder. Main attribute that lies beneath the visible veneer of happy is a felt sense that the folks that own and run the establishment care about their customers and the patron experience. This isn't necessarily a rare thing, other shops in town and around do as well. But it's a good thing, and good to appreciate and be outwardly thankful for. So. Thank you Roots people. I have been here 3 times and each time I've been treated with disrespect. I was accused of walking out on my tab (we were walking up towards the counter to pay there.) I have never been greeted with a smile. I have been extremely anxious because of the lack of customer service. This place has good beer. And the owner is super great - if he's around he provides great energy and is very knowledgable of the beers they serve. Some were from NYC and other areas. He told us that he drives to various places (like NYC) and sources the beers himself. He was able to tell us about each, and compare/contrast to some more local offerings they had on tap as well. Food was just ok - with the exception of the Grilled Cheese which was really good! Worth 5 stars - just be sure to expect a beer place with a few snacks and not a sit down restaurant. read more

As soon as I leave my brewery-filled island, I'm immediately on the prowl for beer and breweries that might be near my travel destination. Besides the obvious choice in the nearby Cooperstown area (*cough Ommegang *cough*), Saturday night we were in search of some smaller brew spots of the upstate region near Oneonta. Roots was discovered and off we went for a reasonably enjoyable beer experience. Right there in the middle-end of Main St, Oneonta is Roots Brewing Company. A clever logo sign, with the "O's" shaped like a couple of hops, hangs before you enter into a low lit and cozy restaurant. I say restaurant because Roots brews its own beer, but also offers up food selections (something to remember if ever back in the area). Four original brews on tap as well as a couple of guest options (Bells and Old Rasputin). $2 per flight glass, so I went with the four brewed in-house (all equipment can be seen in the back). First up, Haute Blonde. The style is in the name and flavor was generally crisp, though honestly forgetful. Next was Poison which most probably gets its name from its Belgian Tripel style and 11.1% ABV. Flavor on this was reminiscent of other quality tripels and one of the better of the four beers. Third was Yippie-O-IPA, which wasn't a killer in IBUs (75) though wasn't as crisp as you might expect from this type of brew. Lastly, D&H Porter, which had the lovely flavor of a creamier porter with only a mild bitterness on the palate. It was a respectable showing by Roots for their own tappable concoctions. Overall, Roots Brewing Company knows a thing or two about brewing beer. They don't have anything out of the ordinary and some brews fall a little short, but the ones that hit, accompanied with some casual fun ambiance, creates a beer experience worthy of a few trips. read more

Roots brewing company was an interesting environment with some delicious tasting drinks. Came in on a Saturday late afternoon around 3 or so. I've been wanting to try this place for a while, it had some good curb appeal but I am not a big beer drinker so I was hesitant. My boyfriend loves craft beer so in we went. There were a few people at the bar and the place itself had a ton of open space. They had the most adorable Halloween set up in the front with a few benches and a coffee table of the sort. There was a mini stage, so I assume they have live performances sometimes. In the back there were a few couches with a bookshelf filled with coloring books, crayons and books for kids, which I was a little bit confused about. It kind of made the place seem messy. After talking to the bartender who was super friendly, she explained it's a very family oriented spot, a lot of families come in and bring their kids, so that explained the books and coloring supplies. Still, I thought it didn't match the demographic I would think they were looking for, being a brewing company and all. So something I didn't appreciate about this place was the fact that they wouldn't disclose their wifi password to customers. Service in Oneonta is brutal and non-existent mostly so when I inquired about the password to the bartender she became a little bit awkward and said it was a new thing that the password is for employees only. Later on in the conversation she told me the place does not target the college kid clientele and that it's mostly older folk and families, and for that reason, it was even more surprising to me that she wouldn't disclose the wifi password. Additionally, there was a woman on her laptop next to me at the bar on their internet (she was employee) she was overhearing my struggle with not being able to connect to the internet and I was sure one of them would step up to the plate and help a girl out, but nobody did. All I wanted was to get onto a restaurants website to see their food menu so we could figure out where we were going to dinner. Since we were unable to do so, we had to leave prematurely to find a spot we could look this up at. I even left the bar at one point and walked up and down Main street trying to get some service. All could have been avoided with a little password, just saying. So luckily, they had other drink options besides beer, they also had wine. Didn't think they had any vodka, however I could be wrong. I got a glass of Rose and it was absolutely delicious and very dry, right up my alley. My boyfriend tried two of their beers and loved both. I really appreciated the bartender letting us try both the wine and the beer before we committed. Each beer had their designated glass and I thought that was cool too. We didn't stay for any food but their menu looked super intriguing. Mediterranean style dishes; hummus spreads, eggplant spreads and spreads that I couldn't pronounce the name of that sounded so good. They offered gluten free crackers for these spreads too, which was amazing. I wouldn't run back here because again, I'm not the biggest beer drinker and when I do drink beer I like to be in warm weather outside and this place doesn't allow for that. However, they do have a good Rose and interesting food so I'm glad we stopped and checked the place out. But also, wifi. Sharing is caring. read more

Went back to visit my old college stomping grounds and saw a new brewery has opened in the time I've been away. I was excited to try this place so we got there just after 12pm on a Saturday. There is so much room in this place and it's beautiful. Exposed brick on one side, and semi exposed brick on the other with the wood makes this a very comfortable place to grab a cold one. The bartended was amazingly nice, giving us the history of the brewery and allowing us to try samples of their beers. Unfortunately, they only had two of their own beers on tap joined by a couple guest taps. Although I'm more into hoppy beers, I tried Joy, a saison style ale, which went down super smooth with a nice finish. We also tried the Rosyth Ferry which was a Belgian style scotch ale. To be honest, I can't stand scotch ales but somehow since this was more a Belgian style it actually worked well to my surprise. They have a ton of food so we got a soft pretzel with beer cheese sauce to split. Came out super hot and the cheese was delish! Looking forward to returning at some point and hopefully more Roots original beers are on tap! read more

Roots Brewing is a cozy little brew pub in downtown Oneonta. We tried a little bit of everything -- from the Anxious Abbot to the 550 Pale, plus a variety of items from the food menu. Even the house wine. We started with the pretzel bites, which were served in a pint glass. Cute presentation, but it was a little hard to fish out the last few bites. I'd prefer a bowl, but they were good nonetheless. Between a few sips of beer and wine, we tried the mixed greens salad. This thing was fantastic -- fresh greens and heavy on the veggies. Plus shaved almonds and craisins. Yep, that's pretty much a perfect salad in my book. We also shared the Salsa Fresca and a sausage plate (kielbasa with sauerkraut and caraway rye seeds). The salsa came with a side of smokey been dip, which was a nice bonus. The salsa itself was super-fresh, but not spicy at all. I always enjoy a bit of spice, but it was still great. For me, the kielbasa was the highlight. It was chopped up into bite sized pieces with the kraut on one side and fresh baguette on the other. This finger food concept pairs well the the brew pub concept. The beer was fine, but I'm an IPA guy and was a little sad their first batch wasn't available yet. Next time, eh? read more

My boyfriend and I were excited to try this place because the decor is interesting and they claim to be a brewery, but the music was way too loud and they don't have their own beers yet. They have a very limited number of beers on tap but a very long list of cans and bottles with no flavor descriptions on the menu. As we were trying to decide and looking up a few online, two different servers kept trying to take our order. We kept saying we needed a few minutes, but every 60 seconds one would be back asking what we wanted. We felt really rushed. One asked what we typically like so they could make suggestions, but none hit the mark. Their descriptions of beer were unhelpful and mainly consisted of "that one is my favorite." After ordering under pressure, I ended up with a bottle of beer I didn't like (served with a dripping wet glass), which my boyfriend ended up drinking. We just wanted to relax at the end of the day but couldn't hear ourselves think, even if they gave us time to. We got out of there as quickly as possible and won't go back. read more

Very nice place to good and hang out of you're a little older. Some of us start feeling awkward at the "college scene" bars once we hit 30, so Roots is great for us! I can't drink alcohol and no one ever makes me feel weird for being there because of that. They mix up some club soda with fruit flavoring and it's perfect. We are here in Oneonta for a week at Cooperstown All Star Village and stooped into Roots after dropping off our boys. Plenty of room for all the parents from our team and delicious beer and food! Tim was behind the bar and Lacey was in the kitchen. They definitely weren't expecting our group of 30ish people (!!!) but handled it perfectly. Food came out quickly. Beer was cold and tasty. Their in-house brews were easy to drink - the IPA was clean with just a moderate hoppy taste. Also consumed at the table were inconceivable and Wubba Lubba. Both got excellent reviews. Definitely a great place to drink and eat (and drink) if you find yourself in Oneonta or Cooperstown All Star Village. read more

This place was great! I was visiting a town near Oneonta and wanted somewhere to go and hang out. We found this place by walking down Main Street. There was a bluegrass band playing and we walked in. We did a beer flight (all their own beers 'kept one) and did a cheese plate. The service was impeccable (we sat at the bar) and the cheese was awesome! The beers, OMG! I surprised my husband with a trip to Cooperstown for the weekend, and I decided to bring him here for lunch on the way there, and he was very happy. I'm not a beer fan, but even I could appreciate this place. Tim the bartender was FANTASTIC-friendly, chatty, but not overbearing in the slightest. I ordered a wuss beer made with ginger and hibiscus, which I enjoyed but my husband found entirely too sweet. My husband ordered some "real'' beer, which he enjoyed, (Haute blonde, which he enjoyed; Inconceivable, which he found a bit too sweet; and the Bonafide Black, which he got a growler of to take home). For our food, my husband got the grilled cheese, which was so good I wanted to steal it from him. I got the cheese plate which was good, but I wish I had ordered the grilled cheese. We enjoyed our meal/drinks, and had a nice time just sitting at the bar. If this place was closer to where we lived, we'd visit regularly. It's a great spot to enjoy food and some drinks. read more

The beer is awful. if you like craft beer you probably know beer advocate. I would rate all of their brews under 75. Fortunately they have "guest brews" which are usually along the lines of a Bells Two Hearted. I have been with people who like more traditional lagers (Bud, Coors, Water) and they seem to like the beer. The food is tasty but way overpriced and the portions are tiny (I mean jokingly tiny, should be embarrassed to charge what they do). Atmosphere is wonderful though and the staff is great. Good place to relax with a group and unwind. read more

Boyfriend and I stopped here as we passed through Oneonta. Seemed like a decent place woth a nice vibe. Food was good (I got the Mexican dinner, veganized, while he got the Indian dinner, veganized), though we both thoight our meals were a bit spicy. We sat at the bar, as it was pretty slow, but the service was awful. Upon arriving, we each ju at asked for a glass of water while we looked at the menu, and the bartender never asked us of we'd like something else. I ordered a beer (Haute Blonde; pretty good), while the boyfriend stuck with water. Once the bartender finally took our orders, the food actually arrived pretty quickly (again, not very busy at the time), but she never checked back in with us. It was almost obvious thay she was ignoring or avoiding us, even after we were finished, while she did other tasks. There were no other staff members available for us to flag down yo try to get our bill, and there may have been 3 or 4 other people total sitting at the bar. I'd say we waited another 15 minutes after we finished eating before she checked in with us. We asked for the check, which took another few minutes. I'd probably go back if I was in the area. The food was good (again, a bit spicy), and there was only three choices as far as entrees, so hopefully they switch it up often. read more

This place is a must when you are looking for really good craf t beer. We came up to this area for my husband's birthday in mid April and had been some what disappointed with the breweries in the area (Omegang was closed for renovations and othr places we heard were good were closed for the season). Walking in I'm not going to lie I was confused bc it smelled like straight up curry which is not something you would expect in a brewery. So not liking Indian food I instantly thought I was going to hate this place. However they guy behind the bar was insanely friendly and I could tell how passionate he was about the beer there. So I sat down we ordered and wow was I suprised! The beer was amazing and so were the pretzel bites and cheese dipping sauce! The bar tender was amazing and help us out of towners by recommending good places in the area and talking beer. We did not have a good experience in this place. Started out with a bad vibe when we sat at the bar (mostly empty) and ordered a beer, the bartender wanted a credit card to open a tab. I told him we were going to be eating dinner there at the bar and he still said he needed a credit card from me. Now - I am a 56 year old guy sitting there with my wife. Do I look like I am going to run out on a bar tab after eating dinner and drinking there? Pretty bad way to start out an evening there. We were in NYC later in the week and not a single bar in that we went into asked for a credit card to open a tab. We thought it was rather strange to be asked for a credit card when having dinner. I am sure the bartender was just doing his job. About 20 minutes later the 2nd bartender came over with a confrontational attitude also. I guess they could tell we were not locals (it was bingo night so maybe they really did not want us there anyway). We ordered some Indian food - I had something advertised on the board as cauliflower, carrots, peas and potatoes (or something like that) and what came out was mostly potatoes, served in a very small bowl that looked more like a lunch size serving rather than a $15 dinner plate. Came with a side of rice. It was tasty but is was mostly potatoes. Really not impressed with the quantity or quality of the food. But the real thing that got me to not like this place was how they sell their beer. We ordered an excellent stout (or maybe it was a porter). $6 for a pint. Very nice beer. Then we ordered their IPA they had on tap and they served us a 10 oz pour for $6, I was quite surprised when I returned from the bathroom to see the 10 oz snifter of beer waiting for me. Bartender says because this beer is 8% alcohol that is how they served it. He said any 8% beer they sell is sold that way. He thought it might have been to do with a state law but he was not sure. The funny thing is I looked at their beer list on the wall and it was a miracle - something like 5 out of the 7 beers they were offering were EXACTLY 8% alcohol! Imagine that - somehow they manage to brew their beers to be exactly the alcohol (8% exactly, not 8.1 or 8.3) amount that would justify them giving you 10 oz. pours for the same price as one of their pint beers. So you get almost 40% less beer because they are "worried" about the 8% alcohol. Charge less if you are only going to pour a 10 oz pour. Your beer is not some cult beer like Tree House that would justify the prices you are charging. But I guess this is the only place in town like it so they feel they can get away with it. We left after getting our credit card out of hostage and went down the street to a local bar and ordered an excellent pint of double IPA (forgot the brewery) that was 8.1% and this bar sold it in a pint glass for $5. So it is evidently not state law that makes Roots give you a 10 oz pour, it is simply Roots charging you a lot of money for not a lot of beer. read more

I do not particularly like beer; I seldom drink beer. And that may change. Yesterday while visiting friends up-state, I was taken to Roots in Oneonta, NY (175 Main St.). What a pleasant surprise. I chose Haute Blonde, one of the lesser ABV selections, and found myself returning for more. I paired the brew with a basket of smoked Italian sausage and a wonderful winter squash soup. Increasing the enjoyment of the brew was the relaxed venue which offered a bar, picnic-like tables as well as smaller tables, and even a small section with a couch and arm chair. If I describe the brewery as warm and inviting I would not be exaggerating. A place to visit more than once either with friends, family or a significant other. read more
