There is an online training, an in-person option to learn coaching skills, and a concussion/safety training, plus an app/resources for planning practices and drills. (It sounds like a lot but was manageable and what you want from a coach teaching your child!) I really liked the experience overall and found the league was well run and communication was good. Families and other coaches were very friendly and it felt like the type of league I played in as a kid for 12+ years-- well organized practices, actual games on the weekends, etc. The emphasis really is on teaching kids strong basics but also having fun (they remind the coaches of that many times!). I looked into other leagues, and was wary of reviews that said some teams in other leagues didn't really play real games and it's more instructional than a league (I9). Lonestar seemed like a good option for more intensive soccer (some options for more than 1 practice a week) but other than that seemed similar so we're sticking with NASA for now and are excited for a second year.

At no time was my husband or I notified of an incident occurring at the facility or during art class. Rob McDonald and Whitney Seaton both employees of the Rec facility assumed I was aware of the situation solely based on speculation that my aunt who was caring for my daughter while I was away on business had been able to get a hold of me. The first time I heard from any party was when Rob McDonald called my cell phone to tell me the outcome or determination for my daughter's enrollment in the class. Rob called and stated my daughter could no longer attend art class at their facility. Rob and Whitney did not call us as parents to inform us of the incident or to tell us that you all would need to speak to all parties involved like my daughter or the other party BEFORE coming to a decision. They spoke to the other party ONLY and decided based on that one party. Due to the other party involved being Caucasian and us being minorities this does make the situation feel race related. It does cause my husband and I to feel like there are grounds for a civil suit for discrimination. Not only did you all reprimand my daughter, but you all allowed a white entitled father to also reprimand her. You all failed my daughter and did not keep her safe. Pflugerville Parks and Recreation Dept as a whole needs new procedures and policies in place to protect other children of color from discrimination like what my daughter was subjected to. You all are at fault for how this situation was handled. Young Rembrandts and the Pflugerville Parks and Recreation facility decided based on a "she said" scenario without communicating with all parties involved and doing an actual investigation. Our daughter was traumatized and terrified by the father that approached her. Rob and Whitney continue to word things like you aren't privy to what occurred at the facility entrance and framing things as if he approached my aunt and daughter. Please do not minimize or attempt to downplay what that father did. He walked up to my 8-year-old black daughter, and he said, "Did we have a problem today?" My then terrified 8-year-old responded to him and began to explain herself. This is a situation that no child should ever find themselves in. I will not stand for any injustices. I do not recommend this facility if you are a minority.

It's definitely an aging facility that doesn't boast the latest in exercise equipment, but we have those places around. Here's what I love: $2/hour child care, and it's GOOD -- people who seem to love kids are taking care of them. $1 walking track -- you can't beat that for a walking alternative when it's too hot, cold or rainy. Finally, great programming -- the swim lessons at Gilleland Creek, gymnastics for kids -- again, taught by kind, loving and knowledgable instructors. I really feel like this is a special gem that gives me the warm "pfuzzies" about Pflugerville! :)

The coach pushes fencers to compete nationally but only trains them for the recreational level. Attendance at competitive practices is sparse. Additionally, he is known to use profanity in private lessons, even with children as young as 10 years old. If you are an adult looking for some light exercise, this may be a viable option. Otherwise, do not fence at AFC.

Austin Fencers Club reshaped him into a competitive fencer and march 2014 was the first competitive competition we went in Dallas. After rigorous summer camp and training, he was qualified to go to National Championship in July 2015 and placed within TOP 50s in the nation for DIV III. He recently placed on top 10 for North Texas Open - first competition in the season which scored spot for National Championship in July 2016! This is great place to learn Olympic level sport with highly qualified coaches. If you are looking into effective workout that can help you for long run, this is also great place as well. Kids loves fencing classes and it also helps tremendously to go to college or to be healthy! I highly recommend it!!!!!!

This is a private non profit organization that has a small paid staff. It's made up of members who…read morepay dues and donate money to underwrite its operation. The WAYA sport teams are coached by parent volunteers. The teams only play other WAYA teams. Many if not most of the teams are created by the coaches and are comprised of classroom groups that wind up playing together for years. The remaining teams are a random assortment of kids who sign up on the website. The kids who seems to have the best experience are those who are part of the pre-built teams. They all know each other, the parents know each other, and they often spend a lot of time socially outside of their time at WAYA. The expectations are rather high for them to perform well and build skills. The randomly formed teams are at a disadvantage in terms of feeling as if they belong and their coaches are starting from scratch each season because the only kid they know is likely their own child and maybe a few more. It took our family a few years to understand this dynamic as nobody really spells it out. Parents who don't know anybody need to come to WAYA ready to greet people, strike up conversations and make friends with other parents. Put yourself out there. It's really a special place and not a place to come and keep to yourself and ignore others, otherwise your kid will have a less than stellar experience. Think of it as a private club that allows visitors. Because that's what it is. And be a good visitor....better yet- join!

Now I couldn't tell you my ass from elbow when it comes to this sport which is why I sat on the side lines. Having grown up playing football (not the American version) and coached kids in the another Austin league. All the kids got equal time and same level of encouragement and respect. It's joy a to watch a great/good or even mediocre coach who's heart is the right place. An individual who's out there for kids. It's absolutely soul destroying to watch a bad couch just out there to relive his GLORY days thru a bunch of kids or more specifically thru his kids. If you don't have the patience to coach young kids, or your just in it for your own kids, get the **** off the field. You can probably guess who kids didn't level the field and got attaboy after attaboy. I watched my kids enthusiasm go from from 90 to 0 over the last 3 weeks. Today was the last game of the season and after talking with other parents who have/HAD children in your league this is symptomatic. I'm glad to say my kid will never be back. We were both beginners but they treated us with care and made us feel super comfortable in the water and didn't make us do anything we weren't prepared for. The pool was nice and warm and easy to learn in and they also gave us goggles to help us during our lessons. They have changing rooms as well and plenty of parking.

The management on the swim side is very unprofessional and not very comprehensive at all. If you are a POC I highly suggest looking for employment elsewhere, to me it seemed I was always delegated the tasks the managers just didn't want to do themselves because of entitlement. Not a good work environment for women of color because it seems they want to be the only ones in my opinion, Analysia Acosta & Natasha Iverson need to be replaced for better management and a better work experience for anyone looking to join this "team". Coach Jen is great with students and all of the other coaches I have interacted with are very helpful and enthusiastic. It has been a really great experience for us and I highly recommend the program.
