But that's…read morenot surprising -- before going here, he took several gymnastics classes through the Pflugerville Rec Center and loved those as well. What I love about this place: -- The classes are ongoing. I realize this could be a positive or negative, but for us it's nice not to have to sign up for each new session and hope you get into a class that works for you. -- Variety. His old gymnastics classes were great for him when he was younger. They taught him to pay attention and gave him confidence. But they basically did the same thing EVERY SINGLE WEEK. Which was fine. But in the five or six weeks he has been attending classes at Platinum, I think they've repeated exercises maybe once or twice. The equipment they have here is also more extensive and "professional," and it's been great to see him learn new things and grow. -- Instruction. Now, I'm sure this largely depends on the person, but so far his instructor has been a great mix of hands-on teaching and encouragement and letting the kids figure things out. I also love the fact that they frequently have a second instructor/floater who helps out. -- Size. I think there are six kids in his class, but generally four or five show up for any given session. Perfect to allow for one-on-one instruction when needed while letting the kids have some freedom to learn on their own. -- Accommodating. So far they have been completely accommodating with us switching days and classes. And when we recently learned they have a holiday break camp and called about it, they said it would be fine for him to attend even though he's technically not quite old enough (supposed to be at least 5 and he's 4 1/2). What I don't like as much: -- The parents have a separate "viewing room" closed off from the gym. This isn't so much a bad thing as it is just not what I'm used to. It's nice being able to sit in the same room with him, and it's certainly easier for both of us to see each other. -- Not as friendly to younger kids. They say that kids can start as early as 18 months, so we eagerly took our son and his younger sister to a free trial class. Holy bejeezus. While it's true that the class is supposed to be for kids from 18 months to 3 years, I can't imagine an 18-month-old who could do pretty much any of the stuff they were doing. One of the exercises had her hanging from a bar and (in theory) bringing her feet up to the bar as well. Ha-ha. Ha. Ha. Most of the 3-year-olds couldn't do it! The thing is, we've been to classes that are ACTUALLY geared to kids that young, so we know it can be done. They're just more play based. Bending, dancing, jumping, climbing. Holding their hands as they go across a balance beam. So we were bummed. But mostly it's their loss, because we certainly won't be putting our daughter in classes there until she's at least 3.

I finally felt like I was seen where at another gym I just felt like they could care less if we were there or not which I didn't care for. Platinum made us feel valued and seen. Well, I noticed pretty quickly the constant turnover of coaches, every week my daughters preschool class had a new coach which was discouraging as every week I had to tell my 3yo to not let them hold her hand. My daughter has been walking on a beam for a year without help yet every week with a new coach they would treat her like a baby again. My 5 year old started moving up into the pre team track and it was exciting! I was looking forward to better form, somewhat stricter coaching etc to see her skills really blossom but... honestly it wasn't much different. My daughter would do a terrible cartwheel and they were high giving her and baby taking "great job, wow". Palm to face, this is the pre team track and that flies??? Well they wanted to love her up again, she has been 5 for barely 2 months and wanted her to be on the actual pre team. Practice twice a week which isn't bad but wait for it.... For THREE HOURS on both days, 3:30-6:30. She just turned 5 teal and her skills aren't great, she has potential but she's no Shannon Miller and she's not even close to competing so why am I going to pay $225 a month to burn her out when she's in preschool. To me, here what I see, they are suffering. They need the money, they are pushing these kids up in ranks to fill the spots but these kids are not superstars, not yet at least. They need better coaching, more consistent staff, and higher standards. Final straw was when the owners husband (who is also an owner) and was working at the gym was arrested and being investigated for sex crimes. There was not a peep from them, nothing. To me this is something that should have been addressed, even a simple email stating what was going on and what steps they were taking. Example: As some of you may know, X was recently placed in custody for a crime. We want to assure you X will not be working at the gym during, at minimum, the investigation. We do think the girls were nice, very sweet! But as far as a competitive gymnastics program, keep looking y'all... this isn't the place.

My daughter is currently in Girls 2 and Tumbling 1, so the review is based on that class. Here's the scoop: -The classes are capped in sizes. They are strict about coach to student ratio. I appreciate this because the kids are doing things that they could easily get hurt if not monitored appropriately. It seems to be 8 kids per coach and most of the time it's even smaller. -The coaches are awesome. They all are great with the kids. They are always happy and very helpful to the students. I've seen them spend quality time with each kid to help the child progress on their skills. My daughter has told me how much her coaches care about her. She's 7 and feels great going to class, that says it all right there. -The gym area is huge. There's lots of space for the kids to move around. Lots of equipment so all of the kids in class can work on their stuff with minimal downtime. The equipment all is in good shape and well maintained. -There's a lot of different skill leveled classes. No matter your kid's skill level, they are in a class that's appropriate and one they they have fun and improve in. We have been at other gyms where did not happen, so I like this. -They offer lots of fun extra classes. About once a month they have a "Kid's Night Out" on a Friday from 7-10pm. My daughter thinks it's a party for the kids to go to and loves it. My hubby and I love that we can squeeze in a date night. They also do clinics on different skills to help the kids improve on their skills. I highly recommend this gym for your kids.

Disappointed by Pool Deck Conditions and Lack of Response…read more I am a regular swimmer at the CHASCO Family YMCA and frequently use the pool. Unfortunately, the condition of the pool deck has become increasingly concerning, and my previous email regarding this issue received no response or acknowledgment. As the photos show, there is extensive dark buildup and discoloration throughout the deck, including areas immediately surrounding the pool. There is also a strong, unpleasant odor in the pool deck area that smells like sewage/sewer, particularly around the drainage/channel area. Several members were commenting on the smell again this morning, so this is not something only I have noticed. The lifeguards appear to do what they can with routine sweeping and general upkeep, but this has clearly gone beyond what routine cleaning can address. The deck needs a thorough deep cleaning or power washing, and the source of the odor needs to be investigated. This morning, another regular swimmer was actually speaking with the front desk about purchasing a pressure washer himself for the lifeguards to use. That is an incredibly generous gesture, but members should not have to purchase cleaning equipment simply to have a clean and properly maintained swimming environment. I understand that the YMCA is a nonprofit organization and relies heavily on community support. I appreciate its mission and what this facility provides to our community. But paying members should still be able to expect reasonable cleanliness, facility maintenance, and--at the very least--a response when legitimate concerns are brought to management's attention. At this point, I am hoping management will address both the condition of the deck and the persistent odor, rather than allowing members and lifeguards to try to solve a facility-maintenance issue themselves.

Traumatizing to say the least!…read more Took our 3 year old for her first swimming class and we were so excited. First thing they did was dunk her all the way in the water and she, of course, swallowed a lot of water and cried so hard. It took a while for another adult to come and "comfort her" which they really didn't offer true comfort. She was still crying and within the next two minutes it was her turn again and she screamed "nooo" and was kicking and screaming and the instructor dunked her all the way into the water AGAIN with her mouth wide open. Nothing short of torture! I quickly got up to take her out of the class. As a trauma informed practitioner, I know the importance of respecting people's "no's" and going at the pace of the child's body. My daughter was not ready to do that again and I was told over the phone that if she wasn't ready, they would practice only getting her chin in the water, and then the next round her nose and then her eyes, etc. that was not the case at all. When I took her out, one of the instructors said "she was doing great". I don't know in what world a terrified toddler whose agency just got taken away is considered doing "great" but I have never seen my daughter in more distress in my life. I am so glad I was brave enough to listen to my mom instinct and take her out of the class. I learned how to swim without the torture of drowning. This was not ok. I feel terrible about ever bringing my daughter to experience this. Absolutely terrible. I couldn't sleep last night and every time I replay it in my head, my heart hurts. What I would recommend doing instead is actually building a relationship of trust and respect with each child and going at their pace. I understand it's a short amount of time but the "cry it out" type of system in place is embarrassingly outdated and harmful.

I was taking my daughter to this location over the summer and into the beginning of the school…read moreyear. During this time, she had multiple instructors with whom she adjusted to each time. I initially came here because I won a 3 month pass/membership in an auction at her school. This auction winning would entitle her to receive lessons for 3 months (I was also required to pay a sign-up fee aside from the pass I paid for in the auction). When I started scheduling my daughter with the 3 month pass, there were numerous issues with front-desk staff. I was given a plethora of inaccurate information from various staff members on how the 3 month pass/membership would work. Aside from these miscommunications, my daughter recently had an upper respiratory infection (which is highly contagious) and because of this, I canceled her last swim lesson for 08/28/2019 with the intent to reschedule once she was in better health. I was told at that time when I phoned to cancel said lesson by the employee who answered the phone that my daughter would be allowed to make-up the last class on the 3 month membership as it was not a 'no show' lesson. *Most folks know that an upper respiratory infection (especially in young children) can last for weeks and swimming, dental work etc. should be avoided until the infection subsides. Approximately three weeks later (which is almost standard recoup time for an infection such as the one she had), on 09/18/2019, I called and left a voice message to advise that my daughter is now able to swim as she is free from aliments --- in an attempt to schedule her last lesson of the 3 months I paid for. I did not get a call back, accordingly I called back today, 09/19/2019 to schedule her swim lesson and I was advised that because my daughter "is not on active plan", I would have to sign her up again and pay the sign-up fees I initially paid etc. and she would not be permitted to have her last lesson as it was too long ago from her last session. As a consumer, it is my stance that if someone pays for a service they are entitled to it. In this case, I paid for the lessons my daughter was to have but am being denied what I paid for because of an ailment. In addition, to pay a fee I already paid (the sign-up fee), which is to be good for one year again is preposterous. While I had every intent to sign my daughter up for regular lessons at the conclusion of the 3 month sessions, unfortunately I will have to take my business elsewhere. Buyer beware!

The staff member on the phone told me to come in person since their system showed a room was open. However, when I arrived, I was told there were actually no rooms available, and it had been that way for some time. This was very disappointing and frustrating because it felt like a miscommunication between staff, and it ended up wasting time and effort driving there just to get a "no" in person. I truly wish the information had been accurate and consistent. The facility itself looked very nice, and I would have loved to book it, but they really need to organize their reservation process better. Hopefully they improve this so future guests don't face the same issue.
