    Carnitas
    Richard K.

Roque and his cart on the Plaza, incredible! I ate here almost 20 years ago in the early 2000's and remember how good his Carnitas were. So, upon my return to Santa Fe I was delighted to find Roque and his cart in the same familiar spot adjacent to the Plaza. Order his Carnitas, which aren't the ubiquitous pork Carnitas but rather slow roasted steak with spices, wrapped in a tortilla with onions and pico de gallo. Have a seat on a bench, enjoy the unique flavors and watch some people go by. A rather enjoyable Santa Fe experience.

    Roque's famous carnitas.

Amazing vegetarian tamales, created by a character. Good lemonade, too. My boys had quesadillas, which they liked.

The topped the burrito with green and red sauce... delicious!!! The flour tortillas were warm and soft awesome. As for the service... not good! The bartender is a rockstar, but the other server was not good. Forgot to give our drink order, forgot we asked for water, and forgot the beer I ordered. Actually, the food made up for it! Unfortunately I was highly disappointed by food and service. I ordered fish and shrimp taco. The food wasn't bad but it's didn't come with a side of salsa or any sort of sauce. It did comes with a side of rice which I felt was under seasoned. The service was slow. I walked in around 1pm and door was locked. I was surprised to find them close even though online says that they are open at 11am that day. I checked on google and it was suppose to be open. I called and they said that they are open but waiting for alcohol to be delivered at 3pm. Did they assume that every customer coming in is ordering alcohol? As far as I understand this is a restaurant that serves food and alcohol and not a bar. Shortly after my arrival, there was a large tour with 12 people showed up. I could see that the waiter was a bit flustered because he also had to tend to other customer as well as the tour. I guess this is where the tour take people for authentic taco experience. In my opinion these are more toned down gringo tacos. My taco didn't come with a side of sauce like everyone else. I also noticed that the tour all received a side of salsa which I didn't. I'm not sure if the waiter forgot. I had to flag down the waiter a few time because he also forgot my drink. I also ordered an agua Fresca watermelon and it wasn't made of real watermelon but flavor syrup from the bar. I wished I had known that it wasn't real melon. 2.5 stars for the food and 2 for service. Again food wasn't terrible, but certainly wasn't close to be the best.

When we ordered drinks the waiter politely informed that they weren't allowed to serve alcohol in the front but then directed us to a cute patio in the back. we felt very comfortable there with our dog. We ordered and my wife ordered a cup of Pozole with her meal not knowing that they give you a dryer version of this with the plates. The food and drinks were fantastic right down to the chips and salsa. Simlpe south west cuisine with flavors that are authentic and made with love. The menu is not extensive but you could through a dart at it and be more then happy with anything you hit. We were in Santa Fe for two days and ate at Palacio's both of them. We had a variety of their choices and absolutely loved every one. If your looking for real down home southwest fair try this place. Its like eating at Grandma's kitchen.

Palacio just Hits different, and is probably my favorite place to go for food in Santa fe. The owner and staff are outstanding, every single time. There's plenty of seating in the building but the perfect combination of the historic vibe and small town feel when you step inside really makes this place feel like you're having a meal with friends when you're in there. The food is always flavorful, quick and excellent.

The interior is crazy, so many small rooms and different floors and each room has different coloring and decor. So unique. Felt like everywhere we walked you wouldn't know what to expect next and it was shockingly huge inside! We ordered a round of their house margarita which was delicious, a little on the tasted like mix instead of fresh side, but still good. I had the classic posole soup and tamales. The posole had a kick to it and I handle spice well so keep that in mind! That said it was delicious, very classic Southwest flavor. Tamales were also yummy. If you're looking for the classic Santa Fe food experience I'd say this is the place to go! And you truly can't beat the cost, for a table of four we were shocked at how low the cost was. Will be back!

Apparently moles aren't all dark chocolate spicy sauces ... ?!?? Loved the education and samples. I'm typically not a mole fan, but they were fun to try. We had the octopus but to me the sauce was too oily. The actual octopus was tender and delicious. Also had the duck skin tacos which were more of a minced duck meat taco and delish. The 5 stars go for impeccable service and the SOUP. This soup is not to be missed. Nothing on paper makes me think it should work but it totally does. It's a big lump of blue crap topped with creamy poblano pepper soup with whipped cream and amaretto and then topped with a spicy kick. Someone said cinnamon but for me it tasted more like hot red chili powder. Sounds incredibly weird but it was the best dish I've had in forever. We ended up sitting at the table early and having a drink there instead. We picked a pinto noir from the very extensive and well-composed wine list so it could open up a bit. A tasting of five moles was then brought to the table along with mini tacos to sample and choose which we wanted with our entre. I was partial to the red and New Mexico. As an appetizer I chose the foie gras which was slightly undercooked and had a bit too much berry compote. My entree was the seared duck breast which was also undercooked and difficult to cut. I was hoping for a crispy skin and it was rather soft and chewy. The dessert was good from the couple of spoonfuls I had but I was expecting much more overall.
