Service was great! Had a 10 minute wait for two after checking in with the host. No problem, the bar was next to us so waited with a chilton in my hand. The environment was a welcoming place. We came here yesterday around noon for some margaritas and chips. All the locals recommended this place for good margs. We sat in the bar area and were super happy with the chips and margs. After seeing the plates of food go back and forth, we decided to come here for dinner last night. Tomasitas appears to be a family institution in Santa Fe because it was packed when we arrived at 6:00. Green and red chilis are a staple at almost every restaurant in New Mexico. Almost every dish has chilis covered over it. Sopasillas are also a staple here in New Mexico. I can't find it anywhere else. It's served like bread baskets at other restaurants. We grabbed a table on the patio and started with their fresh sopapillas, which came out warm, fluffy, and perfect for tearing apart and dipping in honey. For my husband's meal, he ordered green chile enchiladas, smothered in their famous hatch green chile and melted cheese. The sauce had that perfect New Mexican balance -- flavorful, a little smoky, and with just enough heat to keep things interesting without overpowering the dish. I went with chicken tacos, served with Spanish rice and all the fresh toppings. The tacos were loaded with shredded chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, and salsa, and the rice on the side was fluffy and well seasoned. After a long day of adventuring back and forth to Albuquerque for a football game and other sightseeing, it was pretty late and I had just arrived back into Santa Fe on the railrunner. I started to agonize over all the dinner choices I had, but ultimately, convenience won out and I ended up just wandering into Tomasita's. Literally the closest thing to where the train dropped me off. It had a ton of reviews, and looks like it had been around for quite some time, so I went in. The place is massive, and the joint was jumping. They actually had a short wait. Upon being seated I was asked if I wanted chips and salsa... leading to my main complaint. Where I come from, and at every other place in NM I visited for similar cuisine, that is provided for free. They charge for it here. Listed on the menu... but I had not seen it at that point. I felt this was deceptive. That said, it was just a few bucks, and maybe the chips and salsa would be awesome. That was not the case. My chips were overcooked and stale tasting, and the salsa did nothing to help. A flat waste, and not a good first impression. From there things were better, and actually, my carne asada was way better than I expected... in the realm of cheap steaks, this was certainly one of the better ones. It was a combination that also came with a cheese chile relleno that I thought was great, and a chimichanga which was not. I was pretty full after that, didn't eat much on the rice and beans, but found them just fine. Interestingly, chips and salsa not free, but a wonderful puffed up sopapilla with a sweet cinnamon butter was. This, the sirloin, and the chile relleno helped save the meal. All in all, this felt like a pretty touristy place, but one with a long history. Really big portion sizes and staff was so friendly (helped with sauce levels). This spot was on my list of restaurants provided by Pack Up and Go for my bday trip so of course I had to stop by since it was listed as one of the best restaurants in Santa Fe! It was a nice easy stroll from my hotel right by the Santa Fe Plaza. I got a very delicious margarita as well as the chili rellenos with Christmas sauce. It totally hit the spot! The portion was huge for me so I definitely had leftovers. The fry bread that came with it was also very yummy! Definitely a good stop on my first visit to Santa Fe! One weird thing, I was sitting at the bar and it seemed this group of older people had come in for whatever special they were having and they basically just hovered around me at the bar trying to get me to leave so that they could sit there. The decor is amazing, the musicians serenaded tables, the margaritas are potent (that's according to my colleagues, I had a soft drink), and at the entrance is a warning that their chiles are the HOTTEST (also according to my colleagues, because I avoid spicy). Everyone loved their food! Misrahan provided good recommendations, so I enjoyed my grilled veggie quesadilla, sans the green chile which was on the side;). We couldn't fit their famous dessert (being fully stuffed) sopapilla with ice cream, but if their sopapilla with dinner was any indication, that famous dessert must be yummy!!! We have eaten here in the past when we lived in Santa Fe and always have had very good experiences. This particular time we dined out on the patio since we had our dog Henry with us. We were told the wait was about 20 minutes and we got seated in about 35 minutes. Our server was friendly and attentive for being as busy as the were. Nice little place close to the hotel. Many people at the agency we were visiting suggested this place. Now, I am a looker. I look at what other people are eating to see if something catches my eye. I decided on the Tuesday special plate. It was a taco, enchilada, and chile relleno. I asked for a ground beef taco. It was okay. The meat had a taste I wasn't used to. It tasted gamey, like venison. One of my coworkers said they may use very lean meat. I dowsed it with salsa and salt and ate it. The enchilada was a blue corn tortilla with chicken. It was okay, I cannot believe I'm saying this, the chile was a little too spicy for me. The relleno was good. The sauce was a little too chunky for me but had a good flavor. Now, I really wanted some rice. The rice was underdone. Someone told me they serve their rice al dente. Sorry, it was underdone. I did not eat it. The sopapillas and beans were good. I asked for a drink to go, and it was a huge cup. I don't think I took any leftovers with me. I had planned to and even asked for a to-go container, but I changed my mind. Tuesday, our last lunch in Santa Fe at Tomasitas in the rail yard district. Tomasitas was not on our radar screen, but they must have been for half of Santa Fe. We were just checking out the rail yard district and looking for a place to have lunch. There was no line outside the restaurant, but it was jammed packed inside, elbow to elbow waiting to be called. The bar area is small and it was packed. Once checked in the wait was just shy of 30 minutes. They seated us at a two top in what I'll call the sun room. No charm here. The only problem is that we were next to a group of six that were having a really good time and were extremely noisy. Luck of the draw! We started with chips, salsa, quacomole, salsa and margaritas. The chips were thick and a bit hard. The quacolome was good but nothing out of the ordinary. The salsa was run of the mill. I ordered flat chicken enchiladas with green chili sauce. They were very good. When Jan serves these at home she calls them stacked enchiladas. Jan ordered the tamale plate and said they were excellent. In summary, the food is very good and that's the most important thing when dining out. The restaurant was slammed and very noisy. The service was OK, the prices moderate. read more

Save your time and money. This is overhyped. We waited almost 2 hours, so bland Tex-Mex. As someone from Texas, I was shocked at how horrible this food is passed off for such a long wait. I literally could find this food in 20 different spots across one Houston neighborhood. I think hype is really playing this place up. The temale reminded me of an Amy's frozen meal. Really good! This was on my list of must try places while we were in town. We went for dinner on Labor Day and only had about a 5 minute wait before we were seated. They don't take reservations or call aheads, so keep that in mind. We sat outside and it was lovely, a little dark at first until the string lights finally came on, but once on it was lovely out there. I ordered the rolled enchilada and tamale plate, and it was fantastic. The flavors were amazing, it felt like comfort food, and was perfectly filling. If you're in Santa Fe this place is a must. Dinner time gets busy so if you want to skip the wait opt for visiting during lunch time or earlier in the afternoon. Being an appetite because portions will be huge. The red and green chili is a treat and I cannot rave about it enough. The green has flavor and it's a great complement to the food itself and brings out the spice in every bite. The red is full of flavors and also very thick.. oh so yummy! Additionally they are not stingy with the portions here especially if ordering the enchiladas, so expect to get a lot of delicious chicken in your dish. Every dish is slightly different in some ways. Some get served with rice and beans, some with refried beans, some with the beans and pozole (not the typical pozole you're thinking but more so the hominy). The star of the show.. the sopapilla.. how you choose to enjoy it that's on you but for me the best way is as dessert with the honey butter and honey, a cloud of delicious in every bite. I think the drinks were great and the mango swirl margarita quickly became my favorite. Their bread which serves as a side is a bomb! I did enjoy my menudo although I have to admit that the red sauce is what I prefer but they only have the white one.
