This morning, a few minutes before their scheduling opening time, we walked by; the door was open and a manager was sitting on a chair. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I was greeted super warmly and was educated on their menu as the host led me to my table (this place is sprawling and has inside and outside tables). My server greeted me immediately and was so helpful in her recommendations. She was truly interested in giving me the best experience as opposed to running the bill up for a bigger tip. Fresh out of the museum of New Mexico, I had learned adovada is a native dish, so I went with the carne adovada plate. Made with slow roasted lean pork, marinated in red Chile, garlic, and oregano. Served with cheese blue corn, red Chile, and onion. With a. side of pinto beans. It was spicy. Not HOT, but not "white people" spicy. It was warm and filling. Delicious. As far as margaritas, all I had were great. I had one of their premium 24 dollar margs, but it wasn't any better than the 12 dollar one recommended by the server. They also offer huevos rancheros, various enchiladas, tamales, burritos, tacos. For those wishing to go a little more americanized (but then why would you come here), they have a buffalo burger, grilled chicken sandwich, and regular burgers. Don't let the crowd deter you. We told the host we were only stopping in for dessert and a couple of drinks. After a brief conversation with the manager, we were led to the bar area where a few open tables were available. It sounded like dinner service would have meant waiting for a table, so this worked out perfectly. The bar area struck a nice balance between lively and intimate. The tables had cute lanterns filled with coffee beans, and the abundance of plants throughout gave the space a cozy, nighttime greenhouse vibe. As instructed, we ordered at the bar and everything was brought to our table. Unable to decide between two desserts, we ordered both: the Hot Fudge Sundae and the Cheesecake. To pair with dessert, we went with the Spiked Coffee and a glass of Santa Fe Spirits Apple Brandy. We'll go from bad to good: neither of us cared for the cheesecake. The sour cream vanilla topping overpowered both the cheesecake itself and the graham cracker crust. My wife, however, really enjoyed the spiked coffee, and I thoroughly enjoyed the apple brandy. It was incredibly smooth, almost like drinking apple pie. The surprise winner of the night was the hot fudge sundae, and what made it exceptional was the fudge sauce. It had this rich balance of dark, slightly bitter chocolate with just enough sweetness to keep it smooth and indulgent. What an amazing place to visit when in Santa Fe at the Plaza! Always busy for dinner weekdays and weekends so make reservations or go early to get on the waiting list or you can wait 1.5 hrs. You can also sit at the bar counter and get food but seating is limited. Bar tables are drinks and bread/chips only. We got the locally brewed beer, garlic bread (non greasy) and shrimp skewer appetizer, then shared the blue corn tacos plate with one turkey sausage and one baked chicken and both red and green sauces. We walked in on a weekday and there was no wait for outside but it was pretty windy so the host was nice enough to figure out an indoor accommodation for us! The interior is crazy, so many small rooms and different floors and each room has different coloring and decor. So unique. Felt like everywhere we walked you wouldn't know what to expect next and it was shockingly huge inside! We ordered a round of their house margarita which was delicious, a little on the tasted like mix instead of fresh side, but still good. I had the classic posole soup and tamales. The posole had a kick to it and I handle spice well so keep that in mind! That said it was delicious, very classic Southwest flavor. Tamales were also yummy. The Shed is one of those restaurants that you'll see recommended on every publication, so it does get packed. You'll need to make dinner reservations weeks out but we arrived at opening for lunch and were seated right away after waiting in a short line. The lunch menu is almost the same as the dinner menu so you won't be missing out. The space was cute, service was great and the food was tasty, but a lot of it is the same New Mexican style dishes that you can get at most restaurants. That being said, we did really enjoy the flavors of the food. The Green Chile Stew is an absolute must as a precursor to any main dish and I enjoyed the crusty bread they served alongside it. Lunch Monday at The Shed. We have tried on past visits to Santa Fe to eat at the shed, but always passed due to the long lines and wait times. My brother-in-law said suck it up, get in line. The wait will be worth it. So we did, and the line, that was through the courtyard and down the side walk moved rather quickly. Probably about 30 minutes. The venue is historic and rustic. It's close to the histroic plazza. It's a lively happening place with a high energy vibe. The bar area is not overly large and the restrauant layout is a bit of a maze, but it is charming. We started with a cup of pozole that we shared. It was good but indistinguishable from all the other pozole that I have had. I ordered two blue corn cheese enchiladas topped with red chili sauce. They were very good. They would have been excellent except the ends of the tortias were dried out. Once beyond the dried ends they were very favorable and enjoyable. They were served with garlic bread, which I thought was a bit odd. I'd like to know the story on how garlic bread made its way to the menu? Jan ordered huevos Ranchero. She was a happy camper, said it was excellent. The service was good. The noise is on the high side. The restrauant was slammed, contributing to the high noise. The prices are moderate. On the down side, and a flip of the script, there was a line for the men's room, but not for the women's. Don't know what's in the ladies room, but the men's is a one at a time. We had a decent evening at the Shed. We dropped by around 5pm and put our names on the waiting list and as they had estimated, we got a call at 7.15pm letting us know a table was available. Our server was friendly and efficient, we sat outside and the atmosphere was comfortable. I had the grilled prawns and they were better than I expected, very flavorful, I would definitely order them again. We also had some chips and guac, they were fine. The chicken quesadilla and the enchilada's were also ok. We tried the "smoky and elegant" cocktail and it knocked our socks off - VERY boozy!!! We were glad to find a spot that had great traditional food for my friends as well as vegetarian/vegan options for me, although I found the menu somewhat misleading in terms of veggie options. I asked our server about the green chile enchiladas (which were described as vegetarian on the menu) to see if they could be made vegan. Turns out they are not even vegetarian! I had better luck with the enchilada platter which could be made vegan by holding the cheese. I asked them to put extra beans inside the enchiladas to accompany the spinach, which they did. The whole plate was delicious, including the posole which was provided instead of rice - what a treat. They also have a separate posole soup which is vegan/vegetarian. The posole that comes with the enchiladas is essentially that soup without the broth. On a recent visit with a very well-behaved wolf/dog mix our out-of-town friends brought along, we loved the staff's immediate furnishing of a dog water bowl and offering of a side of ground beef for his dining pleasure, all quietly on the courtyard floor, and mostly out of sight of the other diners. Their red chile sauce is quite good, and I'd say the green chile is average for Santa Fe -- in other words, tasty, but not extraordinary. For those who prefer lowlander/Easterner fare, there are burgers and other options, so it's hard to go wrong with a dinner party. On this our second trip, I decided to skip their excellent enchiladas and tacos and instead make a meal of the spicy shrimp skewers and the red chile pork slides topped by red cabbage slaw.
