We came in on a weekday around 7:30 PM. As we were driving by looking for parking, we saw the tables and chairs being moved into the gravel. We thought we might have got the closing time mixed up so once we found a parking spot, I went over to ask. They said they were moving all of the tables so that they could clean the concrete pathway. We asked if it was OK we sat outside still with our dog and they said that was fine. They moved us to the other side of the pillar which we originally didn't mind but then quickly realized there's no lighting there. So we were eating dinner in a very dim lit area. After reading the reviews, we were excited to try the fish tacos, tamales, and fresh chips and salsa. Unfortunately, none of these really were superstar standouts for us. The blackened fish didn't have a ton of flavor. I found myself searching for a salsa that had a little bit of salt and flavor to spruce up the fish taco. I ate one of the three and my husband ate the remaining. The tamales tasted fresh and the ratio of protein to masa was great. We ate the tamale mostly without the mole sauce, which we didn't really care for. The salsa and chips that came out as an appetizer were fine. The salsas were different and flavorful. I wish that when they dropped off the different salsas (which they do on a rotation) they would have explained what each one was. read more

Tres Colores was the perfect unassuming restaurant with a few tables inside and a few outside. The food was flavorful and the service exceptional. A waiter helped us push two tables together and even placed some shims under the legs so they wouldn't wobble. We browsed the menu and placed our order at the counter. Great little spot downtown near convention center. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you. Service was great and food came out quickly. Ingredients were all very fresh. We shared the chicken tacos and barbacoa tacos. The flavors were good, but the meat was a little dry. The sauces on the side made it fun to try a few different flavor combinations. I ordered green posole and unsweetened ice tea for dinner . The posole was delicious I loved that this version was with green chili and chicken (healthier and lighter version). Diners go to the counter order drinks and food , the staff brings the food to the table . It's a small mom and pop restaurant, staff is nice and attentive to diners . It can get pretty busy and crowded during dinner . No reservations needed. I do recommend if dining for dinner get there before the crowds . read more

Tres Colores is FANTASTIC! The service is warm and professional, the atmosphere is casual, and the food is among the best New Mexican I've had. The mole is made by co-owner Rosario, because, as her husband and co-owner and host Pedro says, "She is the only one with the patience to make it." Her patience shows. I kid you not, it is deep and dark and beyond! Your enter and get seated, get a menu, and approach the counter when ready to order. We started with guac, salsa and chips. They come with excellent guac and three salsas, each interesting and inviting. Oh, and we each had a Perfect Margarita. The name fits. For our entrees, I ordered the chicken mole enchilada (with rice and beans) and my wife ordered the shrimp tacos. We loved each. Toward the end, and after my wife's fork was constantly in my plate, we exchanged plates. I had one taco, using the salsas a dips. Fantastic. My wife couldn't stop praising the beans. Stopped by for a margarita after a day of traveling. It definitely hit the spot! Santa Fe is known for their silver coin margarita and yep, this is the place to get one! After walking around, my friend and I needed a small pick-me-up. We didn't eat enough for me to review the restaurant fully, but sitting outside for chips and guacamole, and some drinks was the perfect boost we needed. Service was nice and friendly. I really wanted to like this place, especially seeing it's a small family run restaurant. We ordered the chips/salsa/guac in which the guac was awesome! The salsas it came with were unfortunately lacking flavor. Our main dish was the beef enchiladas with beans and rice. Good flavors in the green and red sauce that covered the enchiladas, but other than that, somewhat disappointing. The beef in the enchiladas was a rough chewy carne and the beans and rice lacked flavors. Service was great though and appreciate the hustle of the workers there. I ordered the Calabacitas Tacos, and the guy who rang me up assured me there was no dairy in any of my food since I am vegan. I loved the reassurance. The food came out super quick. The man who took our order was a delight. Our drinks were great food good seasoning, but I have to be honest here- the adovada plate was a bit dry. I think it is because they used a pork loin and not shoulder, and the pieces were cut very small. That is just asking for tender, but dry meat. We asked for some recommendation for the food, and was told that the fish taco was the popular dish. I was disappointed that the fish taco was not that great. I think the fish wasn't that fresh so it was super fishy. Luckily the shrimp taco was good. By the way you need to order and pay at the cashier, they don't take the order from the table. The food was delicious. We went for an early lunch. We have been eating out in Santa Fe for all of our 62 years in New Mexico. We come from Central Illinois where the two main spices are ketchup and black pepper. It didn't take long for us to fall in love with New Mexican food with red and green chile. This place offers New Mexican and Southern Mexican specialties. We focus on their New Mexican dishes. My wife got the breakfast bowl with calibacitas and Christmas chile. I got the Huevos Rancheros, green. We were both impressed with the quality of the food and the friendliness of the service. We definitely will be back to try some of their other offerings. Before we left we bought a package of 6 bischochitos. We ate one in the car before we left. It was definitely the best we ever had. The anise flavor was just right and the cookie had a nice flakey texture. We also bought a package of frozen pork/red chile tamales. The man behind the counter said, 'Steam them for an hour." That told me the masa was ot pre-cooked, but sounded like an interesting think to do. It didn't sound like too big a deal since the tamales were wrapped traditionally in corn husks and tied with a corn husk strip, just like we learned to do years ago when we found out how much work it was to make tamales. After the steamed for the alotted time, I put one on a plate and unwrapped it. I was expecting a lot of masa an was surprised to see that there was a generous serving of pork and red chile and a layer of masa on the bottom. The filling was outstanding and very much like I was accustomed to in Northern New Mexico. The masa was flakier and not as heavy as what I hav e experienced before. On the usual masa-heavy tamales I end up discarding half of it or more and feel cheated on the filling. That was not the case wit Tres Colores Tamales. There is a generous amount a filling making them well worth the cost ($24 for 6). We will be back for more. They have a variety of other kinds, including green chile chicken, mole chicken, an vegan calibacitas I intend to try the chicken mole enchiladas on our next trip out. We discovered that we have been stuck too long in our circle of 4 favorite restaurants and need to be more adventurous. For now we have five favorite Santa Fe restaurants and this one takes first place. The place has the feel of a local favorite inspite of being just one block of the Plaza. While we were there they did a brisk take-out business with people who I assumed were local workers. Some have complained about the prices, but we found them to be in line with what we've become accustomed to, and considering the quality, well worth what we paid. It is clear that the owners value quality and taste. Their overall rating is well deserved. We are happy to have discovered them. read more

Solid, solid, solid service and hospitality. Even though the place is limited seating and small, they make sure everyone is taken care of and served. They had solid fish tacos and their plates are more than enough to make your belly full. It also was great because we were starving and found that it had a solid crown inside so it must be worthy! They direct you to a table when you arrive, give you menus and then when you are ready to order, you go wait in line to place your order and pay. Food runners bring your plates out and call your name out to find you. The good: Staff was friendly & service was quick. The bad: I opted for the Tamale plate. The 2 tamales had far too much masa and not much filling. The beef had more filling than the chicken. The tamale seems to have been made from a 3/4 inch thick paddy of masa, made with course ground corn, w/ little or no additional herbs and spices. Then a small amount of shredded beef or chicken is placed in a row along the center and then folded in half like a tortilla. There may have been a heaping tablespoon of beans, and about the same amount of rice in two corners of 9" square plate. Look at the close up photo of the chicken tamale and you can see the large amount of masa compared to the filling. I am from South Texas so maybe that is the way the make "tamales" up here. Very disappointed, especially since there were a lot of rave reviews of the tamales. The cost for the plate was $15. Expensive for what I got. read more

Me and my family of 7 came in at around noon for lunch. The line to order was very busy with people in the area getting take out but the staff was lovely. The food came out quick and it was so yummy. I ordered the mole enchilada( calabacitas not meat) ( same price as mole chicken enchilida). and the house margarita. He ordered the mexican torta and a fanta soda. We got a house salad to share.
