We're repeat customers at Palacio and have had an outstanding experience every time. Food, service, ambience, never disappoint. Located in a quieter part in the edge of downtown, parking is usually pretty easy to find on-Street, and it's a few steps over to shops. The outdoor patio is secluded and quiet, and the indoors offers plenty of seating in a historic setting that's bright and fresh. On the food side, Palacio cooks their red Chile for over 8 hours, making it in my opinion one of the best and most flavorful in Santa Fe. Most other places I get Christmas style, but here, the red Chile is just perfect. On this trip, we had a smothered breakfast burrito and enchiladas suizas. Great local spot to grab some local Santa Fe breakfast. I ordered a traditional breakfast with eggs over medium, bacon and potatoes. However, something must've gotten lost in the translation because I was served an omelette, Christmas style (meaning both red and green chilies, and it was simply delectable service was outstanding other than the confusion on my breakfast order, which the the server apologized multiple times for messing up my breakfast, but at the end of the day, it was actually a blessing because what I received was much better than what I ordered Ambience wise... I got the Enchilada suizas, which was the special for the day, my boyfriend got the Chile Relleno Plate, and others got the frito pie, enchiladas, or a salad. Mine came with refried beans and others came with pinto beans. Both were good but I liked the refried beans the best. Portions were pretty big, some people shared, some had leftovers, and those of us that finished our plates left very full. There were different areas to sit including a couple rooms and a back patio. So far, this is the best Mexican cuisine in New Mexico in my limited NM dining experience. My spouse and I had lunch and ordered the Chef Salad and the Enchilada Plate with baked chicken. The Chef Salad was made with fresh ingredients and was a nice, ample portion. July 22nd 2024 walked a few blocks from the plaza Eastward to the Palacio Cafe. Very busy place at lunch Wife had a $16.64 chicken enchilada with corn tortilla. Two corn tortillas with chicken cheddar cheese onions topped with red chili sauce just the way she likes it hot and spicy. I had the $13 Rubin sandwich it comes on marble rye bread thousand Island dressing Swiss cheese corned beef and sauerkraut. Wife would normally order this but has an aversion to sauerkraut I would usually not order this as not fond of marble rye bread. However the corned beef was juicy tender and so outstanding the best reuben sandwich I have ever tasted so good that I overlooked the marble rye bread. My partner and I tried this place and had a bad experience. It seemed our food was forgotten in the oven and arrived after a long wait - it was overcooked to the point of being inedible. It was physically dried out and hard - the eggs were like rubber. We called the server and he took it away, but after 10 minutes he never came back so we put $10 tip and left. The owner came chasing us down the street screaming and whistling and demanded that we pay the entire $40 tab, which sucks because no one would nor could eat what was served so I feel cheated. In hindsight, I'm wondering if the owner or cooks doctored our food in a way that they could plausibly claim that it was an accident... seemed like he didn't like gay couples and my partner and I are white and Filipino and we have encountered this racist-homophobic behavior from random locals at restaurants and theaters before... not sure what owners problem was but we are both local professionals that contribute to our community that were just trying out a popular restaurant spot... so I don't get why he treated us so poorly... Normally, a restaurant wouldn't bother serving burned food and this place has good reviews so I don't get why this happened to us... but it felt like it was racial or he had a problem with us being a couple.
