Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down...so I sought some comfort food.
    Karl K.

When "Rainy Days and Mondays" aired on the radio on this dreary morning which was also, fittingly, a Monday, the die was cast: I was headed for some comfort food. Karen Carpenter's smooth, beautiful contralto voice singing this doleful song was all but directing me to do so.  In a month that has been 5.3 degrees F below normal and has seen 15 out of 25 days (including the last 8 straight) with more clouds than sun, it was inevitable that this Miami boy find something to shore up his flagging spirit.  I chose Rosa Mae's Cafe, where I found what I was looking for. I had the ground sirloin, turnip greens, blackeyed peas, lima beans, corn bread, and sweet tea. The ground sirloin with gravy and onions was delicious--just the thing I was looking for. Let's face it: the vegetables were canned. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. All of them had a wonderful, comforting flavor that really hit the spot. The corn bread had a nice taste but was really dry. The sweet tea was about average. The service was friendly, but the price was a tick high. I am awarding 3.5 stars and rounding up to 4 because they met my need for some home cooking without the hassle of doing it myself. The forecast is bleak for sunshine--the rest of this week looks to be mostly cloudy.  Looks like I will be seeking some more home cooking.

Been eating here for years, always good...until today. Huge disappointment. Walked in and placed to go order, waited 30+ minutes on food; everyone is short-staffed these days, so I was being patient. Owner finally asked what I ordered, went to kitchen and returned immediately with my order. On the 12 min drive home, I got to wondering how long my food had been sitting in the kitchen. Yep, As you can see, my chicken wasn't even 100 degrees...on top of that they shorted me a side item, and the seafood portion was small. I did the right thing and called restaurant to share my dissatisfaction; owner had stepped out...Left my number for a callback. No call yet. If I wanted pasta I had to heat before eating, I would have opened a box of Stouffer's. If you want an adequate portion of seafood, visit Sunrise Diner on Randolph St. Will I go back? Depends whether proprietor calls me back.

We haven't visited this place in over a year, in fact we almost forgot it was just down the road from our house! But, to say the least, it is a wonderful FAMILY restaurant. I love that there are daily specials offered so you can try something new and save a few hard earned bucks. The inside is cozy with natural sunlight coming in, tall ceilings in the very center, and tables and booths nestled together in rows. The wait staff is friendly and easy going, always willing to help out with the menu, which is quite extensive. If you aren't sure what to eat, the menu may complicate your decision because they offer everything from soups; hotdogs; sandwiches galore: roast beef, chicken, bbq, burgers, chicken salad, tuna salad, clubs; loads of veggies to choose from; pastas; seafood; and entrees like smothered chicken, beef tips and rice, pork chops, and country style steak. There is definitely something for everyone to enjoy at Rosa Mae's Cafe and at an affordable price. I recently enjoyed the daily special, which was beef tips and rice with 2 sides, choice of bread, and tea. I chose baked beans and fried okra for my sides, cornbread, and sweet tea. Everything was served hot and fresh, the meat was tender, the rice fresh and soft, okra nice and crunchy, and the sweet tea was southern sweet, just right. No complaints at all! If you're ever in the Thomasville area, I'd recommend stopping by sometime. Oh and by the way, if you happen to save a little room for dessert, there's always something baked up fresh, sliced, and ready to go. I personally favor the red velvet cake but I'm sure their pies will make a perfect ending to your supper too...

Just Simply Great Food Jimmy grew up in the business and is doing a great job here. Always nice friendly service and good prices. Very wide range of options for you to check out. My favorite things are the marinated beef strips on a hoagie or as an entree and any of the many burgers. Also there are beer specialsIf you were so inclined.

Part of the seating area - colorful, a little worn, decorated from an eclectic view point, somewhat dimly lit.

Rosa Mae's is one of those small Southern town, fried green tomato, kiss-my-grits kind of diners - frequented by the locals, distained by the foo/foo crowd and the drive-by grazers. All in all a solid, relaxing place to grab a country cooking meal - that is what they offer, and they do it well - with good service, and a nice smile. The restaurant has some age on it, as do many of the diners here - remember, follow the blue hairs for value meals. The interior is a bit of a maze, a little dimly lit, but comfortable, relaxing. The menu is broad for a place this size - a nice list of sandwiches, including burgers, hot dogs (really, really good!) chicken salad, tuna salad, BLT, Flounder, Grilled Cheese, Hoagies, and more - and even an Open Face Roast Beef, and an even more interestingly, a Country Style Steak Sandwich. Variety of meat & 2 plates - Fried Steak, CS Steak, Chicken Tenders, Pork Chops, Chicken Livers, Beef Liver, Veal Cutlet, Ham Steak, a nice assortment of Fried Seafood, and even Chopped BBQ. Daily specials are available, and they offer over 20 side dishes to accompany these choices. Some Italian items - Spaghetti (a number of different ways, including Greek), Lasagna, Cheese Manacotti, Veal Parmesan, and yes, even more. Nice selection of salads for those wanting something lighter - not sure why, but some do. The Fried Steak (Chicken Fried Steak to me) was excellent - right up there with Smith Street Diner & Moose Cafe in G'boro - and a nice portion. The Fried Chicken Livers were also well sized, and delicious - crusty on the outside, tender and tasty inside. The Fried Okra was very nice, as was the buttered Rice with gravy - the Pintos were bland, and the Fried Squash was not memorable. Cheese Biscuits are nice - rolls, not so much. Chili dog was very, very, very good - great meaty chili with rich flavor, nice weiner, and a soft bun - at $2, a little hgh, but awfully good. They also are a little different for this type restaurant in that they offer beer & even a small selction of inexpensive wines. Thanks to Sharon P. for the call - was worth the short trip.

As before, I give this a resounding 5 stars. The menu has changed a little bit since I last wrote a review, and I've tried some new items. I have yet to try anything that I didn't like. My new go-tos are the raging chicken salad on a croissant and the berries and cream pastries. If you read my previous review, you will see that I was working up the nerve to try the chicken salad, because I'm somewhat meat-averse at times, and also don't like heavily mayonnaised foods, which is a big risk with any of the so-called "salad" items (potato, chicken, tuna, etc.) in life. I can now confirm that the chicken salad is 1) not overly mayonnaised and 2) made from not-gross chicken (I have no further explanation for this, but picky eaters will know what I mean). It's relatively light, has a nice texture, and is flavorful. It is one of my favorite weekend lunch items (or weekday, if I'm working remotely and in the area) now, not just here but in general. The berries and cream pastry is delicious and I would eat everyday, or even multiple times a day, if my figure and my wallet could afford it. Sweet, rich, flaky. Definitely one of my favorite dessert / sweet snack items currently. I also got a birthday cake made here and it was absolutely gorgeous (and delicious, obviously). Very well executed and totally got my vision. As I said before, there is plenty of seating inside (outside too!) and the volume level is perfect -- lots of people coming through, but quiet enough I can read, study, or do work. We spend several hours at a time in here some weekends. Highly recommend to anyone in the area or passing through.
