I would strongly advise anyone looking for a reliable contractor to look elsewhere. We hired Martinez Landscaping for a backyard project, and while they finished the initial hardscaping, their professionalism vanished immediately afterward. They were supposed to return to complete the plant and tree installation--a major part of the project--but they never showed up. Despite numerous promises that they would "be there next week" or "follow up tomorrow," they have completely ghosted us. I have spent weeks sending repetitive follow-up messages just to get a status update, only to be met with total silence. I've attached a screenshot of my last several messages showing zero response. The guy I initially paid to do landscaping bailed on the job. Fredy and his crew came to my rescue and finished the job...almost. My review is based on the experience working with this team during the different phases of project: Pre-work, the Work phase and Conclusion/follow through Initial phase/Pre Work: Freddy is quick in responding and came in to understand the project need and provide estimates immediately. He is good at communications and easy to talk with. Tip: make sure all the important project details are laid out in the contract which Freddy will diligently document and provide. The Work Phase: the team was on time and did work well on getting things done. Freddy was able to accommodate some changes and additional work as well of-course with additional charges but it helped us to get things done which we realized later when work had already started. Conclusion/Follow Throughs: Freddy and team finished most of their work except a badly leaking sprinkler was missed as an oversight. He came back a few weeks later to fix it and also based on our request double checked how all the plantations and drip line system was doing. At the beginning, Fredy is good at communication, when you asked what you need and want, he always says yes. But during the project, he didn't come to check her crews. You need to check and look at every detail. And his crew didn't speak a lot of English, so it is hard to communicate. And when he said with him on phone, he reject the things you ask before. During our project, his crews install our timber deck on the opposite side. And I asked to reinstall it. Freddy said the deck can also install on that side. But when I consult with Timbertech company. They told me it was wrong. So I insisted his crews reinstall it. But Freddy was unhappy. He said why I didn't tell his crews when they are installed at the beginning. I can't believe that the professional landscaping company made this big mistake and they didn't even notice. Until I feel it was not right, and ask them to reinstall it. Fredy was unhappy, so I pay the extra material fee to install it again. And now, after 6 months pass away, my deck started to curve and looks uneven. They are not professional and have bad-quality projects. Freddy said he has 10 years warranty, but no matter how I sent him pictures or call him. he didn't respond and answer the phone. Also, they rush to end the project, but when we go through at the end, he said he will ask his crews to come back, But also, no response. My previous landscaper took a bit of a lazy route and Martinez landscaping came in to do it right. Communications were great. Fredy is responsive and open to all your crazy design requests. I was looking for someone to do the front yard landscaping and found Fredy's team on yelp very randomly. Fredy is very friendly, easy to communicate and can almost adapt to whatever need I have. The price is also affordable. Overall, the whole experience turns out to be awesome. Fredy's team is very productive. My front yard has about 800 sqft and they finish the whole thing, from removing the old weed to finishing the final look in about 2 weeks. He even helped me remove some of the bushes I don't want near my front door. Fredy is very easy going and can adapt to my needs as long as he could. Got my backyard done (Clean out area, remove edging wood, layout new grass, sprinklers and paving) from these guys in December 2018. I had to constantly kept reminding them to remove the rotten edging wood. I also asked them about removing the weed and leveling the ground before laying down the grass. They asked me not to worry and told me that they will do a good job. Freddy promised 1 year warranty on the work they performed. Here is a situation after they were done. Couple of the sprinklers were not were not working properly, had issues with the head. initially it wasn't that bad but it got worst. This is 6 months after they were done. When we started planting fruit trees we found out that they buried (hid) the edging wood under the soil. We had to take out all of that. We also started seeing the weeds regrowing in the areas ( in laid out grass) where we had issue. The deal was they will clean the area, use a tiller to clean-out, level the soil before laying the grass. Even now when we walk-on the grass we can feel its patchy and uneven. The installed pavers started showing cracks at the joints and got worst over the period of time. Even weed started growing in the cracks. I contacted Freddy in late 2019 to come by and fix some of these issues. First of all, he ignored all the messages and did not respond to any of it. When reminded him about 1 year warranty on the work and leaving a bad review, he responded saying that he doesn't care about reviews anymore because he got some 3 year contract with KB Homes. Absolutely disappointed by the lack of response and responsibility from Fredy. In March 2020, we contracted Fredy and team to renovate our backyard. We had slippery tiles, an ugly pergola and sectioned garden. We had it replaced with an open space with pavers installed, an irrigation system, waterfall & few other small tasks. The initial quote was $15,000. First the positives - the team did a good job and in a timely manner. Fredy was cooperative while scoping the job and during the project. When I found any issues, they were happy to correct them without any trouble. From an aesthetic point of view, I didn't get much input and they moved plants in a haphazard way, they didn't take care of the kumquat tree when it was moved and dumped concrete all around it that it has practically died. And I'd expect that for a landscaping company, they should have been better at it. But this wasn't a biggie for us - Fredy helped convert our not-so-used space to a clean open space that we use regularly. And especially during the pandemic, it has been a blessing! As far as the work itself goes, I would give the team 4/5 . Now coming to the disappointment. Towards the end of the job, the statewide lockdown was introduced and we thought that it was not fair to expect the team to be out and working at this time. We offered to make a partial payment, to which Fredy requested if we could make the full $15k payment as most work had been completed and there was only 1 day's work. We felt that was OK as they'd been pretty sincere up until this point and that was our BIG mistake! The next day I asked Fredy for an invoice and sent him a list of outstanding items. This included completing the irrigation system, completing the waterfall installation, building planters and building the grapevine trellis and other clean-up tasks. Fredy promised that his guys would be back once the COVID situation settles to finish the job. A few weeks later I had still not received the invoice. Few months after businesses started to open, I contacted Fredy and there was NO response! Several calls and messages later, he tells me that he had a new phone and didn't know who I was. At which point, he said he was fairly booked and could only get to us in October. October was at least a few months away but I didn't want to go through the hassle of finding another contractor and double-paying for this project. Come November, and I still have an unfinished backyard, no irrigation system, no trellis and a load of stones occupying my driveway!! Again, no response to messages or calls - I wonder if Fredy lost his phone again and my contact with it?! These are terrible times and I definitely want to give him the benefit of doubt. But my experience thus far shows that it's more a lack of ethic and conscience than anything else. At the least, I should have heard back from him. I feel extremely cheated and disappointed. My review is primarily based on Fredy's lack of dependability and lack of consideration for others time. I received work from him about a year ago in which the outcome was solid. However, there were various communication and response challenges with him during this time. I recently wanted to get some additional work done at my home. I contacted Fredy and we setup an appointment and he never showed and did not respond to my text messages. I let some time pass and decided to give him one more try because I knew he was familiar with my home and consistency in work is very important to me. We then setup another appointment, but he texted me the day of the meeting to cancel because he had a personal issue that he needed to handle, which I understood and we rescheduled. For the rescheduled appointment he was going to be more than an hour late in which at that time it was going to be dark so we weren't going to be able to review things properly as we planned for the job. The bottom line is that he presents himself as professional at times via text but he lacks sincerity and consistent follow-through and consideration of other people's schedule and time investments. In addition, while he can execute the job, he does not demonstrate the consultation skills needed to help you make decisions on how to bring your vision to life. If you can find more dependable people to meet your needs, I would recommend choosing that option rather than using this service. We're very impressed with Fredy and his landscaping crew. He was very friendly, responsive, and professional. We just got our work done today and we're happy with our experience so far. We put off doing our backyard because it was extremely small. When Covid hit, we finally decided to do something with our backyard. We contacted a couple landscapers. Many refused to help us do anything with our backyard saying it was too small. Others would come by and quote us a ridiculously high number just for paving the entire thing with concrete. When we finally found Fredy, we were impressed at how quickly he responded to messages. He quoted us an extremely reasonable price and his estimation in terms of how long the project would take was about half what we were quoted by competitors. Throughout the process, we were unsure of what to do with our backyard since it was so tiny. He came over and gave us 3 quotes right off the bat: one for porcelain pavers, one for stone, and one for stamped concrete. He also gave us advice as to what the pros and cons of each were. We also texted him at odd hours at times and he was always very responsive as to the different choices we were considering and such. When we finally made a decision, he started the project quickly and completed the entire project in 3 days. It exceeded my expectations since I only gave a vague description of what I want, and his crew thought of everything. They took care of all the drainage pipes, put a nice white pebble border near the fencing area, and cleaned up completely afterwards. We wanted to get it done as soon as possible and Freddy was very responsive, promptly returned my texts and we were able to set up some time very next day for clean up, which was great! I worked with Fredy to clear out a very large amount of existing landscaping in both the front and backyard of a house we just bought. UPDATE: I contacted Freddy for a bigger project last month (Oct 2019) on our front yard. Even though he didn't return some of my messages, eventually he apologized saying he was busy and came over to give a price. He was going to demolish a second driveway, install fence, remove trees and lay a sprinkler system and a sod to our front yard. We agreed on a price and a date of November 1st. I confirmed the date a week before and took the day off from work because I wanted to be home on the first day. Not only he and his crew was a no show, he didn't even had the decency to inform me or respond to my text to this date. Also the sprinkler system he did for the previous project is faulty, it does not stop once it starts unless I turn it down from the main valve, he was supposed to fix that when he came over. I am more than disappointed. I worked all weekend to dug out all my bulbs and prepare the location he was going to work on. Now my garden is messed up, I lost 1 day from my PTO, the project is not done and my sprinkler from previous project is not working. I cannot believe how rude this is. -------------------- 2 months ago I sent a Yelp message to Freddy, asking for a backyard project with a description and a picture. He quickly gave me a quote.
