Assolutamente di assagiare: le paste carbonara o caccio e pepe.
Ok, that's as far as my Italian can go, but that packs a punch.
A gourmet deli would be an understatement to describe Roscioli. it's not just a grab and go type a place, there's a sit down restaurant in the back. Their salumeria is stocked with nothing but the best stuff: salami, prosciutto, jamon iberico, etc. A wall of wine on the first floor showcasing Italian/French/other European varietals is an extension of their already impressive cellar. Everything on the menu lists what region or town your food came from which you would not find at any given touristy restaurant on nearby Campo di Fiori.
Stylish Romans and savvy tourists make reservations for dinner. We stopped by for lunch and since it was close to 2pm, we only had to wait 10 mins for seats.
If you're on a budget, it's possible to enjoy their pasta and have a glass of wine for €24. But this is a splurge for my bf and I. We ordered everything: prosecco, e grande piatte i prosciutti, il pane, le paste and guess what? FOIE GRAS!
And coming to Italy, I expected a lot of salumi, etc. but I did not expect foie gras on the menu (which is now banned in California!) their version is a carpaccio style with a cippoline agro dolce of aceto from Lamponi. I was sad with the two small slices! But we paired this with the excellent walnut bread from the bread basket. Oh, don't EVER wave the bread basket away since they make it fresh from their own forno down the street.
The carbonara was an eggy golden color with crispy chunks of guanciale. Also, the cacio e pepe was a magical plate of creamy pecorino cheese and freshly grated pepper. I've never had pasta so perfectly prepared!
The complimentary fresh ricotta cheese neutralized some of the powerful effect of their prosciutto al nero. It was a generous serving of the most fragrant cured ham, a rich dark burgundy color with slim ribbons of lardo that just melts in your mouth!
We were too full to order dessert but our server gave us crunchy amaretti cookies complete with a rich, dark melted chocolate for dipping. OMG. I was stuffed to the gills and my foodie self was wholly satisfied!
By far our priciest meal in Rome (about €47 per person, tip NOT yet included) but worth every single centavo! Meraviglioso, ma caro but can I just say, Viva Italia! read more
