Our wedding flowers were absolutely gorgeous and exactly what we wanted! We had been looking for a florist who could execute our vision (summer wildflowers in the yellow / coral / red palette) without breaking the bank and we found exactly that in Rose Red Lavender. We were so happy with the floral selection, and for a very good price RRL decked out our celebration in classy wildflower vases. We also rented a chuppah from them as well which turned out stunning. Wonderful! I had a Groupon for this store so I thought it was time I stopped in and got myself something nice and useful. An employee (I'm sorry I did not get his name) helped me select herbs (two kinds of basil, chives, and Italian parsley) and create an indoor windowbox. He then planted them for me, and when I left, I had a ready-to-use in the kitchen herb garden. (There's a photo of it here too!) Red Rose and Lavender has a wide selection of pots and plants (many kinds of herbs, chilis, and vegetables). The box I got was just what I wanted and I could not have asked for a more helpful person to put it all together and tell me how to maintain it. This adorable little flower shop was a life saver! I walked in two days before I was about to elope, looking for a simple floral headband to match something similar to what my mom wore on her wedding day 30 years ago. I showed them a rough picture of what I was looking for and without question they were confident they could do it. I'd gone to another florist in Williamsburg and they pretentiously told me my order was too specific so they'd charge me $250! So you could imagine my excitement and shock when the lovely woman confidently assured me it was an easy project that would cost $45!!! They called me the day of to remind me to pick up the headband and I was floored by how perfect it was! I couldn't be happier with it! I went to Rose Red & Lavender to take their "English gardening" flower arranging class, which was reasonably priced. It was SO much fun!!! To start the class, Kimberly gave us bottles of water, tea and .....a personal peanut butter cake from Nine Cakes (my favorite bakery)!!! Just for this, I would have given 5 stars. After that, they gave us our tools that we were able to keep after the class. We had a teacher who was trained in ikebana but she mainly focused on telling us the basics of flower arranging, what tools we need, etc. Then after demonstrating how to use the tools and explaining what flowers are used in English gardening, they gave us free reign of the shop! We were able to use any flowers in the shop they had that day. Most of the flowers were around the English garden theme. They were all so lovely and fresh. While we were arranging, they were all so helpful, giving tips and answering any questions we had. The store itself was so cute. Old vintage maps were all over the wall on one side and then there were flowers everywhere! They also have potting/gardening materials. I recently had my wedding ceremony and reception, and I picked this florist for my wedding among other florists. I found this florist when I saw flower decoration for wedding at Brooklyn Winery and liked it. They use wild flowers and succulent plants in arrangement and bouquet, so i thought it was unique. Yet, still fancy and elegant. I made an appointment with Kimberly and visited the shop for the first time. The shop is little, but cozy. Their decoration is interesting. There are a outside space behind the shop area and there are more plants. It is like a secret space. If you keep going, you will find their office. They were under renovation when I visited early July. Kimberly's office is a relaxing space. I think it was relaxing because of Kimberly's personality, too. She has warm atmosphere. She sent I and my fiance estimate immediately. She responded for our request when we asked her to adjust the pricing. We really appreciate it. After paying deposit, Kimberly e-mailed me a mood board which showed the idea of arrangement and coloring. That was helpful to know how flowers will be prepared on my wedding in advance. On the wedding day, the bouquet was made elegantly. I picked birch tree arch decoration for the ceremony and we stood in front of the birch tree. The tree was decorated with beautiful white flowers and that was elegant and romantic. Table flower arrangements were in fancy wood box and glass vases. We gave out the arrangement including wood boxes and vases to guests as they leave. They loved to take them home as a souvenir. I am absolutely IN LOVE with Rose Red & Lavender. The only other flower/plant shop in Williamsburg that I know of is Sprout, and while that place is adorable and great, I always wished for something similar that was closer to my apartment. Then I happened to stumble upon Rose Red one day online and decided to check it out. Now I've been there like 4-5 times in the past month! The shop is adorable. It's pretty small, but they have an outdoor section as well that they open on nice days and weekends. Their specialty is orchids and they have some really pretty ones, but they also have a variety of herbs, fresh cut flowers, potted plants, gardening tools, etc. Unfortunately I have to take a star off for their prices. They are a little more expensive than Sprout, and Sprout has a much bigger selection which makes one-stop gardening shopping there seem like a better option. However, Rose Red has them beat on flower arrangements! read more

Unfortunately, the bad review and bad experience was not caused by the people I encountered. The receptionist and woman helping her were both friendly, professional and very helpful. They helped me pick out and gift to be delivered to my friend's parents' house for Father's day. I picked out some things to be delivered. I didn't meet the minimum for delivery so I let them add to my bill (for no additional merchandise) to meet the minimum. I suggested this because I really needed it delivered and didn't want it to be an excessive gift. I paid $30 for the delivery on top of the minimum total bill. Here's where it gets bad. The guy that delivered made the 70 something year old man carry his own bag of soil and pots up the stairs.. THEN asks them for money for a tip! He pays him. The mans daughter calls me and tells me what happened and she's obviously upset. This was a gift and they knew it! I paid for delivery. How do you demand a tip and not even deliver to the front door. I asked the owner Kim to create an impressive arrangement for my partner for $150.00. What was delivered was a haphazard looking short cut group of flowers/weed looking stuff. It was visually unappealing and not worth the money. He was upset and I was very disappointed. After explaining my expectations were clearly misaligned with her artistic style, Kim cheerfully offered to replace the arrangement the following day. The replacement bouquet was AWESOME. Kim heard me and valued my business. She responded appropriately and with speed to ensure I was happy. My disappointment was not entirely her fault as there style is more garden like than modern or traditional. I really value the way she corrected the situation and recommend this place highly. Super cool little store that has a lot of classes. I went here for a recent Twig Terrariums Class. It was really fun and the atmosphere was great. They have a lot to offer even in the small space. I wanted to order terrarium for my brother and girlfriend because they moved in together. So I called and chatted with Arlen, super friendly and professional, exactly what I would have wanted from a florist. Arlen emailed me photos of the terrariums to me in California and ta-da, less than a couple of hours later (the delay was on my end, I'm sure he could have done it all in an hour) my brother will be getting a housewarming gift. Went here looking for terranium DIY stuff. Store was quite small, somewhat disorganized - tho suppose that most plant shops look a little unorganized, especially when they have such limited space. Prices for terranium glass/fishbowls were pretty high, like $30 for just the glass. Comparatively, went to Sprout up the road in Williamsburg, much more affordable. Can also just get those jars, similar type things from recycle, vintage shops. So I'd try those or even hardware stores before going here for that again. No one said hi or bye, which wasn't expected but for such a small shop, seems like a good idea to at least engage or make eye contact. That didn't affect my rating tho, rating is based solely on selection, price. read more

This is THE gardening store that I have been looking for all of my life. Most stores carry the same standard plants with very few herbs and vegetables. When I walked past one day I noticed tomato plants on display out front and that caught my interest. As I ventured inside I was greeted by very friendly and helpful staff. So, I started browsing their wares and that's about the time that I realized that they had everything I ever wanted. They even had some rare herbs that you NEVER see for sale. Fantastic class! This morning, I attended a session Kimberly taught about forcing paperwhites. (I happened to be the only person in the class and instead of canceling, she gave me a private lesson! ) Kimberly took time to teach me how to determine if a bulb is sound, three different ways to plant them and finally, she gave me the materials to make my own little paperwhite planter to take home. At RR&L, I was able to purchase the materials I need to plant more bulbs at home and I'm looking forward to visiting the shop again in the Spring to see all of her beautiful flowers, plants and decor in warmer weather. read more

I had such a great experience here! To give a little background: I had purchased a rather expensive terrarium from a different store, and all the plants inside ended up dying within 2 weeks. I was crushed. So I carrying the terrarium over to Rose Red & Lavender to see if they could help me. The staff was so friendly and sympathetic, as well as super knowledgeable about plants in general and terrariums specifically. They explained why the first plants had died (moss and succulents together, a big no no!) and showed me various combos of plants that could actually live well together. After I picked the plants I liked, they custom built me a new terrarium that is way more beautiful than the original one. I felt like we were really in this little adventure together; they even offered me a ginger beer to drink while we talked about the plants! I also appreciated that they didn't try to upsell me on items. They even discouraged me from buying extra plants because they liked the simplicity of the arrangement. These guys really seem to care about their plants and pairing them with the right customers. I feel so much better! read more

Kim at RR&L is truly a master of her craft. When I first sat down and met Kim for the first time, we talked a lot about what I wanted in our decor and flowers, and what kind of vibe I wanted our wedding to have. I showed her my Pinterest boards and she showed me the shop's boards and examples; looking back now, I didn't give her all that much to go on . . . And when my wedding day arrived, her creative genius and knowledge of her craft really shined through in every single aspect of what she produced for our wedding. Kim has a very unique process that may not be for everyone. If you really want to control the flowers/decor, and see preview set-ups and all of that nonsense, then Rose Red and Lavender may not be the best choice for you. But if you want insanely beautiful flowers, a warm and inviting environment at your wedding, and a person (and team) who are passionate and excited about what they do, then Kim and this shop are for you! Kim and her team created the most beautiful atmosphere for our wedding. First off, our bridal party bouquets and boutonnieres were perfect, and my bouquet was absolutely stunning (made from hydrangea, ranuculus, trick, succulents, garden roses, and anemones, for our fall wedding)! She also created a beautiful variety of small and large center pieces, vignettes of bittersweet vines and lemon leaves with candles in all our venue's enormous windows, and an amazing alter-scape for our actual wedding ceremony. The colors, textures, and style of flowers was exactly what I wanted and described to Kim, and everyone kept commenting on what a beautiful and warm space our wedding was in -- Not to mention, what a sweet and warm person Kim is herself! I spoke to Kimberly a year before my wedding, and could tell that she understood my aesthetic and the general feeling that I wanted to create with my floral arrangements. When I walked into my venue and saw the flowers prepared by Kimberly and her team I was extremely happy to see that she evoked the romantic and vintage feeling that I wanted. The centerpieces were exactly as I wanted them, and the other decor (garlands throughout the venue) helped create the Gatsby-esque vibe I wanted. My bridal bouquet, a gorgeous cascading bouquet, completed my look and was beyond what I imagined. Kimberly and her team were very accomodating, talking through what I wanted and explaining prices and costs associated with each item. They were professional, timely and curteous. I'm rather disappointed with this florist. I'm an out-of-towner who wanted to send flowers to her BFF who just had major surgery (and was celebrating her 40th b-day at the same time). I had done a lot of research to find a vendor in Brooklyn who had a more organic/non-FTD feel after having been burnt in the past by cheap looking bouquets. From what I saw on their website, RR&L fit the bill. So I placed an order online. After paying $95 for an everyday bouquet ($139 after taxes and delivery), I was excited to hear my BFF's reaction. When I didn't hear from my friend, I called RR&L to see if there was a problem. "I'm sorry, your friend lives just outside of our delivery area so we sent your order to another florist. But don't worry, we told them what to put in it" Ugh!!! Why did I put my phone number and email address in the order form if you weren't going to call me and inform me of such things?!? Just as you would expect, the other florist delivered an average carnation-filled bouquet in a cheap 70's style glass vase that I could have ordered directly from FTD for half the price. RR&L said: "you got more flowers for your money" -but who wants more carnations?? What a waste. read more

So let me tell you about the experience I had a half hour ago.... I almost always use one of three outstanding florists in Brooklyn Heights (Floral Heights, Seaport Florists and James Weir) but this Valentine's Day, my girlfriend and I are leaving on a long trip Monday so I did not feel like getting an elaborate bouquet for her/us to admire for a short while before our trip so I decided to use a local place and give them some business. I looked on Yelp and the closest place to my home is Rose Red & Lavender. I walked into the store and they had a lot of very nice arrangements but it seemed a little pricey for the amount of flowers and type of arrangement but I was in the door already and my girlfriend loves purple and there was one arrangement in particular that caught my eye. I was apprehensive though as all of the displays looked a little wilted and one of the workers was just going on and on about nothing in particular and I had a feeling that he was going to try and pawn one of those displays off on me. I told him which one I liked (purposely not handling it and gave him a look as if "please don't give me that one") and he said he would get it right away and then told me that he would just give me the display, without asking (of course). Now that part was my fault, if I wanted a fresh arrangement I should have said so but I didn't. But I have also never been to a florist that has offered me a display either. He then asked me if I wanted him to "wrap it in nice paper and make it look all pretty". Yes! Its Valentines Day! That's the whole point, no?! So I looked around the store a little, paid and left. I carried the arrangement home, three long blocks. I open the "brown paper bag" he stuffed it in (yes, brown paper bag) and low and behold he took a piece of purple tissue paper and literally wrapped it around the glass jar. No bow, no tie string, no attempt to make it look nice......just no effort. I called to speak to this guy and mentioned that I was just in the store and a nice woman listened and offered for me to bring the arrangement back and she would give me a fresh arrangement but honestly, I have no desire to traverse the puddles (lakes) of melting snow for six long blocks (3 each direction) carrying a floral arrangement in the cold. I took a purple bow off of a box of chocolates that I bought for my girlfriend, threw the tissue paper away and tied the ribbon around the jar. It looks nice enough (please note RR&L, minimal effort from an amateur). Hopefully she won't notice how some of the flowers are a bit wilted. Long and short of it. They just don't really seem to give a shit. Take you business elsewhere. read more

i went into rose red & lavender last weekend because i needed some pots to re-pot my plants. i left with more stuff than i planned on because: 1.) kimberly was so nice and helpful and she made me feel confident in germinating seeds (which never worked for me in the past). also, she assured me that i could grow tomato plants and edible flowers indoors. 2.) the pots were pretty and cute. i even bought a pot that tricks plants into growing upside down but then back right-side up again. (maybe you should just go there to understand it better. this pot doesn't work with vines though.) the other pot i bought is cool because it grows moss on it, which keeps the plants nice and moist. (i hate the word 'moist' but it is the best descriptive choice in this case.) 3.) kimberly is so knowledgeable that i know there is some kind of insurance with anything i bought here--if i was having trouble or was confused, kimberly would be happy to set me straight. the other super cool thing about this store is that it offers classes in subjects such as composting, seed germinating, and making a planter out of an old tire. these are just a couple of the classes and some of the classes are FREE but the others cost something. with kimberly's help, my fire escape edible garden will become a reality. i like supporting my local businesses, and i like that there is a friendly shopkeeper who is happy to teach me and answer all of my questions about plants so i can take my growing stuff to the next level. if yr afraid, she'll re-pot plants for you, such as my aggressive cacti. i wish there was more of a selection of cheaper pots, but then again, i guess you could go to a hardware store for that type of stuff, so they still get five stars from me. read more

I ordered a wedding bouquet and hair piece from Rose, Red and Lavender last spring. I was initially very impressed with the attention I received when I came in to order. But when I went to pick everything up the morning of my wedding, the hair piece was entirely different than what I had put down a deposit for. Different size, different color, different flowers. The bouquet was wilted and had obviously been sitting since the day before. The edges of most of the flowers were brown and wilted had to be trimmed. I had to remake the hair piece myself and ask that the flowers be trimmed so as not to look like they were dying. I wasn't offered any sort of apology or refund to hair piece. Then, they lost the credit card information I'd given for the deposit and I had to wait around, now running late for my wedding, while they searched for it. No one could remember how much the deposit had been so even though I had the card on me, I couldn't just pay the remainder and leave. They never found the deposit and finally just had me call back later and pay, but at this point a five minute trip had turned into a 25 minute disaster. read more

Honestly, I was all set to dislike this place. I was on their mailing list and got an email a couple years ago about Valentines day like "Don't buy flowers that were designed in KANSAS" which just really rubbed me the wrong way, as someone who has spent a lot of time in not-NYC. However, Sunday morning I was at Crest hardware looking to start my seeds and they just didn't have what I was looking for, so I decided to pop my head in. Everyone in there was super friendly, and I felt like I got really personalized attention from the girl who helped me (Annie? She had long brown hair in a loose french braid), and ended up leaving with a cute little seedling greenhouse that fit my space perfectly. They don't have the biggest selection for gardeners, but their stuff is definitely really cute. The space is small and a little cramped feeling, but the staff knows what they have and can help you get in and out. read more

I needed a beautiful bouquet of flowers in a pinch so I quickly Yelped flowers in Brooklyn. Rose Red & Lavender was the first choice with 5 solid stars! I drove, parked, and walked in the day AFTER Thanksgiving. Of course, nothing is left, but somehow, a bouquet was made. It was beautiful and lasted so much longer than a bodega bunch of flowers. Rose Red is kinda pricey, but that is what you have to do for a quality bouquet. I actually went back again before New Years to buy another bouquet with a cheaper $30 price tag. What a haven for gardeners right here in Brooklyn. The owner is super awesome and helpful and offers classes on everything from growing herbs to creating a terrarium. This has to be one of the most beautiful gardening stores I have ever seen- it is a great place for gifts and for all your plant needs alike. It can be sort of pricey but everything is quality there so it's definitely not unreasonable considering. I actually sneak by this place and try not to go in because every time I am tempted I find more beautiful plants or gardening supplies to take home. Great selection of plants and seeds. Kimberly at Rose Red and Lavender did a wonderful job for our July wedding. I told her we wanted rustic and earthy and that's exactly what she gave us! We decided on centerpieces made of willow branches and dried flowers using burlap bags as the base. She also tied some green ivy to the branches for some added color. The bar arrangements were colorful and whimsical and were held in pretty mason jars that Kimberly brought in from the store. For the bouquet, hairpieces, and boutonnieres, she used seasonal flowers and things like green chili peppers and rosemary. On the day of the wedding, she even showed up three hours early to set up! I asked in the online garden forums and at several florists in town, but none of their explanations or treatments made sense. This place is great, but very expensive. I received helpful advice from a very friendly gentleman working in the back, who also helped me get everything into my cart and make my purchase. However, when I remembered that I needed a small shovel for potting some plants (what I think 90% of their customers are there for), the only option was $35! I had to go to Crest Hardware to get one for the standard price of $5.99. Crest has a lot of the exact same gardening supplies, including plants, for much cheaper than RRL, so I recommend Crest for essentials. However, the boutique nature of RRL is going to make me go back there for sure. RRL is the Khim's to Crest's C-Town: boutiquey and expensive, but lovely. RRL has also been helpful as I've ordered floral delivery twice and it seems they keep the price down and definitely deliver on time.
