Feb 25, 2025- I ask the barber to take a little more of on my sideburn and the barber fold his towel and step back and was silent. I turned around and the barber say to me "I am done" In my head, I was saying "what is going on here. Not approachable", so I pay the barber and said bye. The barber does even say bye or acknowledge me! This is the third time this person has cut my hair and the first 2 times I never got any good vibes. This third time confirmed my vibes by not answering me! If a customer request to take off more hair, at least talk with me rather than saying "I am done", and standing there not willing to accommodate and collaborate. Horrible experience. I am asian and that guy is white and old. I gave him a chance. The second time he cut my hair, I gave him $1 tip and got a little smile and I try to be kind and gracious but not answering back and talking with me and saying goodbye(fundamental etiquette). Saying No or I am done is bad customer service-there were better ways to say it-the higher standard is on the professional. I like to support local businesses and really wanted to like Roseway Barber Shop. I ended up trying them out for well over a year, always thinking they deserved another chance. One month, a fairly good haircut. The next month, a lousy one. The inconsistency finally drove me away. Roseway is the kind of old-fashioned barber shop where the chairs face the small TV, usually showing something like Gunsmoke or Perry Mason, and where no one talks. That means that you can't really tell the barber what type of haircut you want or comment as the cut goes along. The fact that you can't see the cut in a mirror means that you'd better trust the silent man behind you with the scissors and the clippers. This may be an ideal barber shop for some. If I could give a lower rating, I would! They do NOT cut your hair as you want, but as they see best, and their way, not yours! I wanted , and needed to keep my hair longer around the ears and neck, due to my work outside in the wind and cold, and they totally cut it off the way they wanted it! While my knowledge of sports is limited, we do talk about neighborhood concerns since this is where I live. As a gay man, I have never heard anything remotely offensive by either barber or any customers. Trust me, if I had, I would never go back. This place is old-school alright, in that the straight razor isn't a novelty to them and their range of cuts was set in stone 50 years ago. I go here for a haircut. I leave with a haircut. It's like magic. The only thing I wish they had was the self-aware grumpy banter I used to get from Paul down the street, but he got replaced by the hipsters at Too Sweet. If you want a fussy "style" and the metrosexual manliness of a straight razor and beard-primping, they'll hook you up. Not a bad haircut, just not what I asked for at all. I asked him to take a half inch of the top and he took at least 2 inches. I don't even care about my hair that much. Like I said it's a well done haircut, but I would way rather get a shitty haircut where the barber actually tried to do what I asked them instead of a good one that's not what I wanted at all. It was also uncomfortable cause he would comb my hair back when cutting it but start like 2 inches down on my forehead by my eyebrows and drag the comb on my forehead. I've also never had that much hair get on my face and just on me in general it felt like he would cut a piece off and then sprinkle it back on top of my head. read more

This is a great barber shop. I always ask for Roby, who does a great job. Having said that, I have never been disappointed by any of the barbers here! My husband just got home from a haircut here and I am horrified. Not only is my husband bald and it's the easiest hair cut ever, but he's barely got a beard to trim. He also asked for his eyebrows to be trimmed up and the man who cut his hair completely shaved them off!!! He looks like a cancer patient. Absolutely ridiculous. I've always been a traditional barbershop type of guy. I like the atmosphere, the craftsmanship, the conversation etc. Sometimes old barber type guys aren't the most friendly in the world but that's okay, maybe even part of the charm. Initially, I was glad to find this place - tiny little hole in the wall that's been there forever and old-timey barbers with a sports playing in the background. First time, I asked the barber to give me the same cut he had - he told me it was a flat-top. He gave it to me, it looked good. They weren't heavy on manners or conversation, but whatever, it was a good haircut. I'd never had a flat-top before I really liked it. I happened to have my photo taken later that day, and I saved a copy of that photo so I could show it to whoever cut my hair in the future. So, when I went back to get my haircut a few weeks later, I brought the photo. I had the same barber, and said "you gave me a flat top last time, I want the same haircut, here's a photo of the haircut you gave me." He looked at me like I was crazy, he insisted "that's not a flattop" and seemed offended / shocked, almost as if he was boiling with contempt inside. He gave me the haircut in silence and a tense atmosphere. I felt completely unwelcome and uncomfortable. There was an unspoken message from this guy that I ought not to come back, that he was merely tolerating my presence. Almost as if "my kind" were not welcome there?! I would never go back there. They seem like they don't want new customers, or maybe they have a problem with certain "types" of people? I've never run into this kind of treatment at any other stylist/barber I've gone to, and I can't understand how any businessperson can afford to act this way. When I'm spending money at a business, I like to be treated with basic courtesy. Having an old-timey decor doesn't make up for bad service. read more

I don't know why others give this place such a good review. They treated me, my wife and my 2 yr. old boy as if we didn't exist and as we we're bothering them even though they had no customers. One seemed irritated because he was playing poker when I walked in. He did not listen to my wife on how to cut my sons haircut which made here very disappointed. She left no tip...good for her. This is a great neighborhood barber shop. I have had my hair cut here several times. I asked to have my hair cut with the top longer and shorter on the sides and they said "yeah, that's called the regular" and gave me a great hair cut. They finished with a nice straight edge razor trim and some nice smelling cologne. Went here ONLY because my regular place was too busy. Don't mind the traditional barbershop "feel" - such as: NO talking (it's like a rule), cash only (why??), and bay rum even when you say you don't want it. The cut was ok, but you should never trust a barber when you can't see yourself in the mirror to see what he/she is doing to your hair. It seems they do this on purpose. I told the guy not too short on top, but he didn't listen and now it's way too short. Then I asked him to leave my sideburns where they were, just trim them. But when he pulled out the straight razor - he cut them all the way to the top of my ear. NEVER GOING BACK HERE AND WOULD RECOMMEND YOU DON'T EITHER. read more

This shop got a great write-up in The Oregonian so I decided to give them a try. Bad choice. I walked out with the worst haircut I ever had: the bottom half of the back of my head was shaved to the skin. The barber asked what I wanted and I said, "clean up the edges." I could not understand why he was running a clipper up the back of my head since they use a straight razor to finish edges, but he showed me only the front of my head in a mirror on the wall. When I got back to the office I wondered why my head felt so cold so I looked in a mirror and discovered the bottom half of my hair at the back was shaved to the scalp. Sure, it will grow back -- in a couple of months, but no barber has ever done such a bad job. The former worst haircut was at a chain when the women took a clipper and half-inch comb and ran it all over my head. Reminded me of entering basic training 40+ years ago. I'm disappointed and quite upset at what was done to me. I'll never return to this business. read more
