Incredible high end buffet curated by the Master Chef, Gerard Thompson. We were served the freshest fruits/specialty salads, multiple brunch items using fresh locally raised ingredients, a melt in your mouth beef tenderloin, sushi grade tuna rolls, and ending with delectable deserts. Came here for a business retreat last week which is their shoulder season. Had a wonderful time. Flew in to Dallas and it's a few hours drive away, but once there I felt like I was transported into a whole other world. All of the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, and there were plenty of activities to do across the property. I tried my hand at archery, axe throwing, and lasso (among other things for the first time), and the team there were patient and friendly throughout it all. My accommodations were great, I appreciated little touches like the eye mask and earplugs, and I also enjoyed the food as well. If you want a getaway with family, or a business group, this could be a good option! read more

Clean Comfort and Outdoor Thrills Rough Creek Lodge made our Sept 15-17, 2025 retreat feel like home away from home--the rooms were impeccably clean, with daily turndown service adding that extra touch of care. Had a great weekend. There was construction, which I wish we had known about, but they made some exceptions. It is pretty pricey, so be prepared if you plan a lot of excursions. Also, breakfast was included in our package, but no one told us. We would definitely go back. read more

Horrible experience. Arrived for a work retreat, and was greeted to loud machines indoors. Top top it off I stopped by the bar for a beer, and there was a guy setting up to paint a wall right next to my seat. He took his shoes off and got on top of the counter and started paiting with a roller. I would think if we are paying premium for this place, we would atleast expect something decent or better. But seems this is not the case. And the whole time, there's machinery noise in the background. I came to this place to enjoy my time, relax, and was greeted by dissapointment. Honestly a cheaper alternative is definitely better than this place if you are looking for a resort type style. read more

We stayed here for a long weekend. Went to the pool and hot tub (adults only) which was great. The pool was a nice length for doing laps although it was quite chilly! On a Monday in April we were the only guests at the pool. On a Tuesday night we went to the restaurant. The food was delicious. We had the quail, steaks, eggplant and mozzarella and the chocolate molten cake. Everything was very well made and high quality. The service was attentive. My only complaint would be that the restaurant was freezing. We had to leave because it was so cold inside so bring a jacket! read more

Spent two nights and three days here recently for a corporate retreat. This is a true off the grid (still have WiFi) experience to team build, relax or just do something different. The main lodge is like a hotel while cabins a drive away give more of a home experience. I stayed in Deer Run, which is a 3/3 with living, dining and game room. This was a group favorite with pool, shuffle board, fooseball, and ping pong. Every night ended with the whole team at our place for competitive gaming. Food was good, but it is structured. No menus per se. Breakfast is a good buffet while lunch and dinner are a three course offering with several options to choose from. The bar is nice for a wind down after a day of meetings, sporting clays, paintball or hunting various critters when in season. We did the Five Stand both days and had a great time. Meeting spaces are comfortable and have all you need for AV presentations. Give some serious thought to hosting your next company outing here. read more

Rough Creek is a beautiful, sprawling property at the beginning of the Texas hill country. It is far from the noise of the DFW metroplex and is really quite relaxing. I was here as part of a corporate meeting as was fortunate to be spending "someone else's money" - because Rough Creek isn't afraid to make a profit out here. Positives: - the cabins are exquisite and I'm not sure I've slept on a more comfortable bed - meeting rooms are large, A/V set-ups are solid and this is a great place for a team-building type meeting. - Food & Service are solid - of the activities we loved the gun range, skeet shooting and bass fishing. - the Zip line is white knuckle fun and the climbing wall is first class. Watch-Outs: - as others have said the bar / restaurant adds a big service charge. My "Group" bar service charge was 23% - Ouch!! - also pay attention to billing as there seemed to be a few mystery charges that needed to be addressed. - the GPS scavenger hunt is fun but several of the stops could use an upgrade review. Many of these activities are better suited for younger kids. - Lol - why does the driving range have so many left-handed golf clubs? Overall - bring your $$$ for a fun stay at a beautiful location in the Texas Hill country. read more

I cannot share enough about my amazing experience at Rough Creek Lodge. Our entire work department went on retreat Friday thru Saturday. From the conference experience, dining deliciousness, luxurious rooms, and fun activities, I left feeling refreshed and pampered. My friends and I enjoyed the GPS challenge and learned more about the various activities offered by Rough Creek. Our guide was knowledgeable and fun. I really got the feel of the grounds. I enjoyed zip lining and the rock wall with a few friends. There were not a lot of people there, so I was able to zip line twice and try my hand at the rock wall a few times as well. The food was included in our stay. I enjoy the food and the portions were extremely generous. Each meal left me more stuffed than the last. At night, the staff brought us out s'more kits for the fire. A nice touch. I cannot even begin to describe how Luxurious the rooms were. A separate shower and bath tub as well as double sinks made me feel pampered. The bed even had a body pillow. When I returned to Dallas, I told my hubby that we needed to plan our next vacation STAT. read more

The flies. So many flies every time we had a meal. It was increasingly worse as the weekend progressed. The food was quite good but hard to enjoy when you were shooing away the flies. Service is good. Despite working on what seemed like a smaller staff, everyone is super friendly and helpful. Rooms were nice but nothing out of the ordinary. read more

Terrible experience I understand things can happen like a busted pipe. But when your manager has no idea how to handle the situation you have an issue. We called as soon as it happened and the manager said no other rooms available so do you really want me to call maintenance. Well water was going everywhere. We sat in our room for 2:30 hours my wife and 2 small children listened to the busted pipe spray the room. Maintenance guy was really nice I know it was not his fault. But even he was not real sure how to fix it. Went to talk to the manager again cause now the room has no water at all and to fix the pipe they were going to have to tear down part of the wall. The manager really expected us to stay in a room with no water no toilet. This is ROUGH CREEK 5 star resort and I get to tell my kids to go to the bathroom in what a bucket. We had been there a few hours and in no way was that place a full capacity. We had been there many times and have seen it when it was full. Even the maintenance man was shocked by the managers behavior. Her tone was so un caring and truly just did not want to even help fix the situation.she said their were no other rooms. So my wife, 2 small children, and I had to leave the resort at midnight. My wife, my children and even the maintenance guy just had no idea why the manager did nothing. read more

Spent the Thanksgiving holiday here and had a great time. So many positives to discuss and a few negatives. The positives: First, everything you have read or heard about the food is correct. This was some of the best food we have ever experienced. The serving staff was also some of the nicest and hard working we've been around. Friendly and busy. The portions are large and the menu diverse enough for even the picky family members to find something they will like. Talked our teenage son into trying Quail for the first time and he loved it. A shock since he is usually ordering a burger wherever we go. Breakfast buffet was also diverse and tasty. The grits were a special hit. Second, the grounds are well maintained, clean and neat everywhere you look. We stayed in a cabin near the Sporting Clay area. The lay out was spartan but accommodated us nicely. The cabin was sparkling clean both inside and out. We initially thought the fire pit was not used since it was completely free of any ash or debris when we arrived. How they got everything out is beyond me. But, that is the level of detail we saw. Third, the staff experience was terrific. From the people who help you park, the wait staff, cleaning staff and the hunting guides. Everyone was friendly and seemed to want us to have a good time. We went on two hunts, thank you Cody and Tanner, and were rewarded with lessons about how to improve, clear and safe directions about the adventure and successful harvests. A nice touch was that Tanner cleaned our ducks and had them waiting in a logoed cooler with a very good recipe included. Nice touches all around. Fourth, the variety of activities is great. We fished on the lake behind the lodge - while we did not catch anything, we had a good time tooling around on the boat and trying - we played several rounds of putt-putt, threw axes, shot bows and arrows, hunted hogs and ducks and shot sporting clays. Every venue was clean and accessible. The variety also meant we had no trouble finding a way to spend some quality family time. The negatives: Our cabin was not ready when we were initially expecting to check in and the story kept changing about why. I'm not sure if there was a disconnect between the front staff and the crew taking care of the place but it put an initial damper on the experience since it was the first impression. Thankfully, the rest of the stay took care of that. We had issues getting the cabin televisions and coffee makers to work. The televisions would not turn off or respond to the remotes and, again this was on initial check in, we got various answers about why and when it might be fixed. Had to disconnect one to get it to turn off. Things were fixed the next day bright and early though. The dining room seating is a bit odd. Your reservation time is when you are seated. This, even if the room is pretty well empty. So, if you have a reservation at 7:30 you will not be seated until at least 7:30 even if the room is empty. We wanted to move away from one table that was near the door leading outside since it was cold and drafty. The front greeter who we asked to move initially told us we could not move "because the dining room was full." I almost laughed out loud because we could see multiple tables - i.e. 5-6 - completely empty around us. She relented when I pointed this out. My wife had a massage and reported the room was ice cold. She was also unimpressed with the actual massage. But, stripping down for a massage in the cold is not likely to lead to a good experience. A note about the dining room: There is a sign indicating "business casual" dress is required. What constitutes "business casual" is a bit vague. We tried to dress up a bit for dinner but not everyone adhered to this. Groups with young kids mainly. My son and I hit the breakfast buffet after our morning duck hunt and we were still wearing our gear. We were not muddy or anything, but had discussed whether we needed to change before we went. Turns out not to have been a problem. You will see some people very nicely dressed at dinner and some more "casual" than "business." But I did not think this was that big an issue. My wife on the other hand . . . I point out the negatives only to help them improve the experience for others. Overall, we had a great time and would definitely go back. The prices are not cheap. But for overall value I think you get what you pay for here. read more

We wanted a couple of days away as with most people during CoViD 19 our movements have been limited and we were ready for a change of scenery. We are a family of 4 with 2 teenage daughters. Rough Creek was perfect for us. The rooms were very comfortable, the food was excellent, there was a good selection of activities and nothing was crowded. The service was very good and your staff wee professional and took the CoViD19 precautions seriously. Overall I give your operation a 9 - well done. Hate to give them a bad review because it's a nice place, but we stopped in on a whim to have lunch at the restaurant after going to Fossil Rim.. When we arrived we were told by the hostess we got lucky to be seated because sometimes it's "exclusive" and they won't allow walk-ins. She said she would let us come in though.. Their were multiple flys constantly buzzing us, but the real problem was the food.. Everyone at our table ordered the $23 roast beef... it was supposed to come with some fancy cheese, horseradish, sautéed peppers and onions.. Honestly wish I would have taken a picture because this sandwich was a bun, some dry meat and a slightly melted piece of cheese and some pieces of chopped peppers. No Horseradish and it was totally dry meat! Not what you would expect at such an upscale "exclusive" place.. We made the manager aware of our dissatisfaction (we were not looking for anything free) but it was a huge let down and we wish we didn't make the trip to try and have a nice lunch... She said she would tell the cook.. but I guarantee nothing will change.. we actually saw the chef messing around in the kitchen when we were waiting for food.. the place was pretty empty on a Monday.. my guess is his head wasn't in the game and he was bored and screwing around.. Waste of money and wouldn't recommend, for lunch at least!! read more

Amazing experience, great food and activities for people of all ages. Highly recommend the steak dinner and the Cannam rides around the property. Only complaint is that the walls are PAPER thin in the rooms. So if you're stuck next to a bunch of screaming 12 kids, or people partying, don't plan on sleeping that night. Choose your room wisely. We had a lovely time expect our last night where we heard loud voices and banging on all sides our our room until 11 and then starting again at 8 am. If they were smart they would would reinforce the walls and so that the people that come here with their kids can freely enjoy themselves, and the adults that come here to relax, can actually do so as well read more

Twelve hungry Southwards (my family name) descended on this restaurant for Sunday brunch this weekend and despite all of our differences as a family, we all agreed that this brunch was outstanding (ahem, especially since Daddio paid for it :)! The buffet included lots of fresh, sweet fruit (including succulent blackberries, sweet strawberries and juicy pineapple), duck migas, biscuits n gravy, pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage. But the best part was the made to order omelets with tons of fresh filling options like diced sweet peppers, spinach, shrooms, jalapenos, sausage, bacon, beef and chicken! But the best BEST part was the housemade cinnamon rolls that were not overly sweet, but were soft and gooey. Service was prompt and courteous despite my nieces' multiple requests for hot chocolate ("the best they've had", loaded with little marshmallows). The waitress did accidentally drop the check with my husband (we immediately broke out into a sweat) and after glancing at it, I would guess that the buffet is about $20-25 per person (no booze was offered but we did have several coffee drinks). The lodge and grounds are vast and very appealing. It caters to hunters and fishers so we did see several camo-ed folks at breakfast and heard gunshots while we toured the grounds. The pool looked nice as did the cabins, but from what I've heard, I probably couldn't afford a nite here. I mean, they had real cloth hand towels in the bathroom! No offense to my brother, but I think your sausage/egg casserole is a holiday tradition of the past! Hopefully this is our new Christmas brunch spot! read more

Stopped in for lunch over the weekend as I had heard a lot of good things about RCL and were considering using the lodge for both personal get-aways and as a place to take clients. It was pretty slow as we hit them around 2pm so we had lunch off the bar menu. It was kind of disappointing that even with the limited menu, one of their star items, the quail, was not in stock. So we opted for burgers and fries. The burgers were less than impressive when they arrived. Not bad mind you, but for ~$17 each, plus an automatic 21% included gratuity, I expected a pretty kick-butt burger. And having lived in NY and travelled around the world a few times, I have eaten my share of $20 burgers so I felt I had a basis to compare these to. But that's part of the problem with high prices, they set high expectations. The lodge and grounds are beautiful and the staff were all very friendly and welcoming as well. The resort itself offers a lot of activities. On some of their packages they include activities like fishing and canoeing but other things like shooting sports are, expectedly, items that they charge for. I just wasn't quite prepared for the the prices I saw. Take a round of sporting clays for instance. A round of sporting clays will run you ~$120 per person plus that wonderful 21% gratuity added in. Pistol range is ~$50 per person per hour...plus 21%. Spa prices also seemed a tad high and then you get to throw in that 21% there as well. Seeing that +21% on everything was disappointing. I have no qualms spending money on get-aways but when places tack an extra 21% on the already lofty prices it is a turn-off. And I totally get the captive audience of resorts, but I think the prices here for the shooting sports are a bit out of line. But hey, I admit that I don't have an endless sea of cash so maybe I am not their target audience. Celebs and other ballers won't think twice about the prices. Three stars for the lodge and the opportunities to have fun. It would easily be a 4+ star place but it is just too expensive for what it delivers in my, admittedly, humble opinion... read more

There's no Rough to it! It's definitely comfortable & relaxing with a rustic sophistication. My family took me to Rough Creek Lodge for Mother's Day , and the food was Delicious, Plentiful and the Presentation was Beautiful! One of the most amazing fine dining experiences I've ever had. The restaurant overlooks a pretty lake and chances are, you will see deer, covey of quail, long horn or herds of buffalo out of the floor to ceiling windows in the dinning area. We've never stayed @ the lodge but, we've taken the tour. The rooms are gorgeous and large! The furnishings are high end rustic. The bathrooms have Claw Foot Tubs and marble floors. I highly recommend Rough Creek Lodge. We always look forward to our next visit and plan on staying next time! I agree w/ Tripp S., the environment @ Rough Creek is laid back and relaxing. Not like other Resorts we've visited with a plethora of activities.....sightseeing...etc. Just quiet and stress free. Nice Spa as well. read more

Our family has been coming to Rough Creek Lodge for over 10 years, and this weekend's trip had the same splendor and excitement as all the previous ones. We were welcomed so graciously by the staff, and we caught up with those we met during our previous visits. We enjoyed every moment from the gourmet meals, making memories outdoors with our little one, to relaxing in our luxurious and comfortable suite. I can't think of many other destinations that have stayed relevant and exquisite over such a long period. The ownership and staff have found a way to innovate with new state of the art activities such as Top Tracer by TopGolf and chargers for electric vehicles while keeping the 7 Star guest services and the World Class Cuisine of Chef Thompson. Management here is horrible, place isn't up kept because the owners spend more money on activities that bring them money instead of spending it on lodging. You get charged a pre authorization fee which is 50% of your total (your stay for 4 nights is 6000, you'll be paying 9000) the fee will take a week or two to come back. Pictures make the lodge seem more beautiful than it is, there's mice everywhere and mice poop everywhere. Even in the kitchen! Woke up to a bunch of Crickets inside my room. My bathroom ceiling started dripping. My room wasn't properly cleaned when I got there, still had hair in the bathroom/trash on floor/ and black mold. Under the second floor walkway the metal beams are rusted out and the wood is rotten, a piece of the beam fell off when someone was walking above my wife and I. I feel bad for the people that actually own a home out here. Rough Creek Lodge is lookin really Rough. Don't believe me, spend the $, get ripped off and see for yourself read more

This review is for their meals, service and observations of this place! *To note: I have not stayed here, but it looks like a great place to visit for a stay, but just from the service, the care of the place, the tasty food. To note as well: It has been a while since I have been here, but I remember such great service for dinner, the food was top notch, and the atmosphere! This is a place to bookmark as a romantic, fun, and with a fancy southwestern flair! If your gal likes/loves southwestern environments with a fancy twist, book mark this place. Perfect place for a fun get together, if you are going just to eat or spend the weekend, just by the way they take care of their customers. Just a little note, it's over an hour and a half southwest of Dallas and it is just right to get the heck out of the city life and still get treated like royalty! This is this a 'down to earth' upscale western hotel with a fantastic restaurant and some fantastic service. When we came here I had a fantastic filet mignon, and some side dishes. But I remember the steak was top notch! The food was fantastic, but what was over the top was the fantastic service and how gorgeous this place was in my honest opinion. *Heads up guys, If you need to get your tail out of trouble, I highly suggest a trip here with your mate! I checked in for some much-needed R&R. For a pre-dinner appetizer the Chef sent a lovely deviled egg with baby lettuce and chopped bacon on a foundation of avocado aioli. My second course was a peppery ahi tuna with a pineapple chutney - wow it was fantastic! The third course was Scottish salmon on a bed of red quinoa with watermelon chunks. They even have in-house made fresh Gluten Free bread. It was fantastic! Everything is delicious and the service is impeccable. read more

Great amenities, shooting , hunting, batting cages, Archery, golf range, pool for kids, etc. Food is ok, not Great ok, rooms are spacious and clean, service is great! One Draw back is it a little expensive for a family and its more a "fo fo" ranch for the wealthy and Biz meetings vs a real ranch. read more

Our time here as been absolutely fantastic. Despite heavy rains and the cold wewther. There was lots to do. The boys there tomahawk shot bows and went fishing. The girls went to the spa. The good was 5 stars and the staff was really great.I would recommend this place for couples or families. We stayed at the silver pheasant house and there was plenty of room for everybody. We are staying in Glen Rose and had always heard great things about Rough Creek Lodge so decided to make a lunch reservation. Big mistake! Menu was extremely limited, my husbands sword fish sandwich was too fishy to eat sent it back and ordered a cheese pizza, which was just ok. My chicken tacos were a joke. Two street taco sized corn tortillas filled with salsa, I dissected one and found maybe three very small slivers of chicken, there was a pot of beans with a spoonful of rice in with the beans on the side, the chicken tacos are $24! The small just ok cheese pizza was $18. The food does not justify the price. read more

Service - 3 Star Food - Too Expensive Location - Go to nowhere and take a left (outside Glen Rose, Texas) This used to be a great escape. Former private hunting lodge gone guest ranch with upscale furnishings and on-site decent dining. On a weeknight you could get a room hear for $100. Nice get-a-way. And then some trendy magazine "discovered" this place and started waxing poetic about its world-class resort status. And then it started getting named in other lists. Gee, did any of these reviewers ever go there in the summer months?. Like when its well over 100 degrees. All their hunting and outdoor activities don't seem so great, then. And the grounds aren't beautiful, except around the well-watered lodge. All these activities have high upcharges, they don't come for free. They have a spa there, but its on the expensive side as well. The biggest problemis how much it costs to stay there. Now that they're a much-hyped "destination", the lowest price I can find is $395 a night, with weekends, higher. If you want a meal and breakfast with that it's $540 a couple! It's not THAT nice! Pick any of the better hotels in Dallas, go on a weekend, have a nice meal and there's change back from a couple of hundred. Why drive two hours to the middle of a cow ranch? The rooms are decorated nicely, the beds are super comfy and the lodge (dining area and check-in)) is dramatic with lots of wood and windows. The pool area is pretty, though smallish. On a clear night (and decent weather) the STARS ARE BRIGHT! (After all, here you are, deep in the HEART OF TEXAS). As I said, the biggest problem I have with this place is the prices. There, I've said it. It's too expensive for what I perceive you get for the money. Or the other options available elsewhere. Maybe the prices are OK by NEW YORK CITY standards, but I've been to Glen Rose, and Glen Rose, you're no New York City! Maybe a Texas cattle ranch is an exotic location, if you're from LA or NYC or Tokyo. It isn't to me. But if you really think you need the rustic experience, then for God's sake, don't go there in June, July, August, or possibly September. And then in January and February the windy plains can get downright cold. But there's no snow to make it seem prettier. Just dead grass and shivering cattle. read more

am writing this review as a teacher and single mom who chose to take my kids to Rough Creek for what I thought would be a fun and relatively inexpensive vacation.  Unfortunately, my experience was quite the opposite. Pros - The room was nice and comfortable.  The adult dinner was delicious. Cons - When looking into staying at Rough Creek Lodge, I found online that the rate was $330/person and kids were free, this was to include our meals and several advertised activities.  I asked my kids if they would like to go and they got excited and started packing their bags.  When calling to make the reservation I was informed that RC does not accept single parents and I must pay the rate of a married couple with double occupancy in the room.  I was personally offended by this but had already promised my kids - the lady on the phone listed off all the things we could do and said the price was inflated during the holidays and spring break bc "we do special things for the kids like ice cream by the pool" - (I would like to note there was not only no ice cream by the pool....the pool wasn't even open!!!).  I decided to go ahead and pay the $790/night (which turned into $1000 after taxes) as I was convinced this would be all inclusive (it wasn't!).  As I pull up to the lodge, I was immediately disappointed.  I was not welcomed by beautiful landscaping, but rather a big open parking lot with all the activities adjacent and construction everywhere!!!! Lots of banging, large dirt and concrete piles, sawing of trees, big diggers....it was not what I was expecting from a resort of this caliber!  While waiting for our room to be ready we decided to check out the activities.  We headed to "texas's larges maze" (as advertised).  I started my timer as my kids raced each other through the maze - it took them exactly 47 seconds to get through the largest maze - clearly that was misrepresented!  We then decided to go on a little bike ride but when we got to the bike rack there was no bikes to use.  The only ones left either had broken seats, missing pedals or no chains.  We asked one of the workers and he informed us that we could rent an ebike for $25/hour (I soon realized this was going to be one of many up charges at the resort).  We opted to forgo the bikes and do the zipline.  After an hour of waiting in line at the zip line our room was ready.  We checked in and got in our swimsuits to go to the pool - this is when we found out the pool was not even open!  We changed back into our clothes and decided to go play putt-putt - surprise, there is no putt-putt course!  There is a small putting green.  I spent the rest of the afternoon sitting in the hot parking lot with my daughter watching my son play basketball - which I could have done in my driveway at home!!!  My dinner was good, but my kids were offended by the offerings at the kids buffet...maybe good for a 5 year old but not for older kids.  We went back to our room to watch a movie.  The next morning I woke up early and decided to hit up the fitness center for a workout.  All I could do was laugh when I got there!  The fitness center was a hallway with 2 bikes, 1 elliptical and no free weights!  There was what looked to be a closet off the hallway, turns out that was the so called spa - basically a closet with a massage table in it.  I went to the activity center which had a picture of a very nice looking fitness center on the wall as advertisement and asked them where that picture was taken bc I couldn't find it.  They just laughed and said it doesn't exist!  When my kids woke up we went to breakfast, sadly it was just a glorified buffet.  I spent the rest of the day trying to figure out how to entertain my kids with the so-called activities I already spent $1000 on.  Unfortunately, my kids got tired of playing basketball within an hour.  We had already had to be out of our room so I was going to use the shower in the "fitness closet" to freshen up before our drive home....but, there was no hot water.  We drove home covered in dust, but happy to be home. All this to say, I was very saddened, disappointed, and offended by my experience at Rough Creek Lodge.  After my stay I did reach out to the manager with my frustrations, but I never heard back. read more

I stayed at Rough Creek in the George Bush Presidential Suite, and had a wonderful luxurious time. The suite was beautiful, the resort was beautiful. Our room overlooked the endless acres of green land, rolling hills with breath taking views. The room was very pricey but my old Suga Daddy was loaded so what did I care! If I could just score this place on the rooms, service and spa it would be 5 stars but its two because of the food! Since this is a hunting resort, the inner beast called to "daddy" which was perfect because the spa was calling my inner Diva, so I spent a LOT of time at the Spa! The guy who took care of me was amazing! I still remember his name was Keith! I wanted so bad to stuff him in my suitcase and bring him home - but he wouldnt fit! I got every kind of spa treatment known to man, and then after that I think they were just making up treatment to give me, but I didnt care because it was ALL wonderful! The downfall to this weekend getaway for me....... was the food! I WAS HUNGRY THE WHOLE WEEKEND!!!! I dont care how well known, how well respected, and how famous the chef is or in what magazines he'd been written about ..... I HATED everything I ate at this resort. It was ALL that "super fancy" VERY expensive food that isnt enough to fill up an ant..and if I remember right breakfast and lunch were at least $40 per plate and dinner was never less then $100 per plate.... it was just ridiculous considering it was awful.... and most of it was just GROSS looking, and GROSS tasting! One night I ordered quail thinking MAYBE it would be similar to fried chicken..... wrong! It looked like it was a baby bird just without feathers, I expected it to up and fly away any minute..... I couldnt eat that it was looking at me I swear!! Since the resort is way the hell out in the middle of nowhere it really was not feasible to leave and go anywhere else to eat so I was stuck there all weekend basically without anything worth eating! I asked the waiter..... DONT YOU GUYS HAVE CHEESEBURGERS..... he just stuck his nose up and stormed away! I love messing with uppity people!! As soon as we left and got back to civilization I seen a McDonald's and had never been so happy in all my life to see those golden arches I yelled PLEASE STOP AND GET ME SOME REAL FOOD!!!!!!! And I dont usually consider McD's real food but I swear that was the best Big Mac I EVER had! Another word of advice.... the dirt roads leading out to this resort are hell on a Mercedes as much as the rooms cost there I'm pretty sure you could afford to pave the road... read more

We used to have a weekend house in Glen Rose and would regularly eat at Rough Creek. It was amazing! We went to glen rose for our anniversary at the end of September and of course selected Rough Creek for our anniversary dinner location. We were very surprised at the quality of the food. It was nothing like we remembered. Truly nothing was good except our cocktails at the beginning and the Champagne they served with desert. My partner's pork chop was over cooked. My chicken had so many flavors going on you couldn't tell what was what. Very surprising considering they have a well known chef. I'm thinking he wasn't there and they had the C team cooking in the back. And to top it off they attempted to charge us more than the price on the menu. If you didn't look closely you wouldn't notice but since we were disappointed of course I scrutinized the bill. Then we were automatically charged 22% gratuity and truly it was 15% service max. Needless to say we will not dine at Rough Creek again and will share our experience with our Dallas friends. read more

I have been to Rough Creek several times, and every time it just gets better!!! The rooms are fabulous- very warm and elegant. Not like a hotel room at all. Very much like staying in a nice home. Lot's of wood and oversized furniture.The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms are very luxurious. The service is always top notch, but in an atypical, laid back sort of way. Understand, this is not Ritz-Carlton type of service. This is the Texas Hill country, so it's not meant to be stuffy or overly sophisticated. For my money, the level of service is spot-on. The food is awesome. Honestly I am completely shocked another yelper here said they didn't get enough to eat! I weigh about 240 and I have never walked away from a meal hungry. Dinner and breakfast are included in your stay and breakfast is an all you can eat buffet! I highly recommend the cheese grits with poblanos (or maybe it was green chiles- whatever, they are amazing)! I have vacationed in a lot of cool places and at many resorts I have always felt pressure to stay busy with lot's activities and sightseeing or whatever. Rough Creek is the antithesis of that mentality, although there is a ton of things to do. The whole environment is just completely relaxing and I can be just as happy there doing some activity or just finding a hammock and taking a nap. If you are a busy, stressed out person who needs some quiet time while being pampered- Rough Creek is perfect. read more

Beautiful place with exceptional service. It is beautiful is a central Texas way. It isn't the talls pines of east Texas or mountains or lakes or anything like that. It is set on gently rolling land where the plains of north Texas start to meet the hill country of central Texas. The architecture is Hill Country inspired and is beautiful. The food is very very good. It is expensive to stay there, but dinners are included in the normal rate (and I think all rates) and dinner is very nice. When you're in Texas, you expect friendly service...but you also might expect people to be a little rough around the edges and not quite as professional as you'd find other places. Not so at Rough Creek! This place epitomizes Texas in a good, relaxed, luxurious, but laidback way. First, the grounds itself are beautiful. The place doesn't try to be something it's not - you feel like you're deep in the heart of Texas. The decor is rustic, but still modern; Texan, but not over the top or tacky. The rooms are great with big windows, a good view, and with spacious bathrooms. I also enjoyed the food - we were there for a wedding, and the salsas, brunch buffet, steaks, and grits were all memorable. Also very cool because at our first dinner, they served a Sangiovese from TEXAS! Nice! Also, plenty of activities and outdoorsy things to do - ATVs, skeet shooting, fishing, driving range, etc. Only complaints (and these are big ones) would be their billing system. They charged an obscene amount on several cards (including debit cards!) from other guests in our party for no reason...when we called to inquire about the charges, they said it was "just in case" and to cover any incidentals or activities, which we hadn't purchased. Some of these charges were ~$1400!!! Be careful and check your receipt closely...I'd also recommend confirming the total cost upon check-in. *** Modification: I had this place at 4 stars and I'm now downgrading to three. New charges showed up on our bill and when we called to ask about them, they said they didn't know why they were there, but that they would be removed within 10 days. They didn't know? They just want to charge for no reason? And eventually get around to taking the inexplicable charges off? One of the charges was from 09/18 and we weren't even at the resort until October! Can't say enough great things about this place. The staff is INCREDIBLE, everyone I came into contact with seemed to be 100% focused on meeting our needs. They called the kids by name and thanked them for hanging out, it made them feel awesome. We stayed in the Mallard house and the only reason we didn't give five stars is for the upstairs bunk house being a little too warm; couldn't get it cooled down like he rest of the house.
