Visiting from AZ and I was really excited to go to the Round Up. I had heard it was THE place to go. I was excited to do some dancing, have a couple of drinks and see a great drag show. What a huge disappointment. This place replaced the drag show with pool tables? After a $10 cover (for what?) I got to stand in line forever and then be treated very rudely by the bartender in the karaoke lounge. Maybe that's why they charge $10...to pay for the rental of the karaoke machine. They certainly aren't using it to clean the restrooms (gender neutral-how PC). And hello, TEXAS! Bartenders and patrons! I always tell friends back in AZ how friendly you people are when I'm visiting here. I guess the gays missed that announcement-bartenders, patrons all seemed to thing resting bitch face was the perfect accessory cuz you boys all were wearing it. I left after about 15 minutes. Almost tripped over the poor queen that had passed out. Draped over the railing, he was out cold and sitting in a puddle of vomit-hopefully it was his. BTW there were empty wine glasses on the dark part of the sidewalk I noticed after tripping over them. In summation, if visiting Dallas skip the gay bars and visit the various museums and welcome to Texas roadside stands and tourist traps. They are full of old queens with the same accessory as the young queens (see the aforementioned resting bitch face info). Roundup-the only kind person was the guy collecting the cover charge whom I suspect is one of the owners. You go girl-you gotta make the payments on your time share in Branson MO. Needless to say I won't be including the Roundup as a destination designation in my gay travel blog. I'm sure the 9 people clogging on the dance floor will be excited to not have to share the space. Halloween night. Lisa & I were planning on hanging out down in Deep Ellum for Halloween. Enter a costume contest but then thought about how over rated it is and the traffic, obnoxious people, possible fights so our 2nd choice was the Round-Up Saloon. Should have been our first choice. We had an Awesome time. Hoorah to the Halloween decorating crew. Best I've ever seen. Everyone was super friendly. Yes there were a few idiots that groped Lisa. Not cool but overall it was a great experience. I'm not much of a dancer but wow did I strut my feathers in my Big Bird costume. Lisa was Oscar the Grouch. Took many photos with people. We didn't win for couples. The 2nd place winners were the 3 guys dressed in their flower headwear & oddly shaped feet. First place went to the "Will & Grace" duo. If I recall this was a Costume Contest "Not" an acting skit. But the guy did an excellent impression of Will. We will be back next year. . read more

Although the name and reputation classify this as the "country gay bar," it's actually one of the most comfortable spaces on Cedar Springs regardless of whether you like country music or not. Tyler, the happy hour bartender in the front, is always friendly, professional and engaging. He manages to provide the same level of customer service whether there are three people in the bar or 30. He has great hair too! Dallas has a sometimes warranted, but mostly unwarranted reputation as the city of gay pretense. The customers in this bar are friendly - a tad bit cliquish, but not off-putting. If you have a baseball cap on your head or boots you'll do fine if you don't bury your face in your smart phone. It's fun to watch the guys on Scruff meet for the first time at this bar. There is sufficient lighting to do a proper analysis of how old their Scruff profile picture really is. read more

Attended this establishment on Saturday June 19th, 2021 & I could not be MORE HORRIBLY DISAPPOINTED w/ the "service" from the people working here. Firstly, the bartender who had just got done serving Chris Sapphire (from The Circle) was EXTREMELY RUDE to me for NO reason, literally made me cry. Good luck getting a drink here if you are female -The bartenders literally ignore you and only cater to the males. I ended up having an anxiety attack/panic attack due to the OVERWHELMING AMOUNT OF PEOPLE in the vicinity (you should really limit the number of people allowed in the building at one time because not being able to walk really just seems like a fire hazard & y'all should be shut down on that malpractice alone.) Someone else was finally able to get me a water bottle for my panic attack and dehydration, and I made a beeline to the front door exit for fresh air. As I was trying to exit the building as fast as possible for a breath of fresh air w/ tears rolling down my face, a larger man who was working at the front w/ a beard SNATCHED MY WATER BOTTLE OUT OF MY HANDS LIKE A BULLY stating "no liquids in, no liquids out." He could have asked me to finish it inside or whatever, but instead grabbed it from me and wouldn't let it go. Like we were literally pulling back and forth on MY WATER BOTTLE THAT I NEEDED & I was like "are you serious? It's just a water?" This person should be fired for how he handled that situation and that policy needs to be adjusted because HOW RIDICULOUS. We were in Dallas and wanted to go line dancing. (This was before Covid hit back in February) And when our friend said "There's a free line dancing class that we can take on Tuesdays", we dusted off our daisy dukes and I slipped into my ankle boots and dashed on over to the Round-Up Saloon as soon as we got off work. Unfortunately when we got there, they wasn't any line dancing classes going on that night. Womp, womp. (You can learn to line-dance on Wednesdays and Thursdays.) Fortunately the night was not lost, there was plenty of cheap booze (hello $5 Tito's and Texas whiskey), talented dancers performing live, a locally produced horror flick up on a giant screen, plenty of tight jeans, cowboys, short shorts, rhinestones galore, plenty of fabulous ladies in drag and Robyn (yes that Robyn) performing later on. What are the chances that we would strut into a bar in a different city and get to see Robyn perform. Random and SCORE!! We had such a blast and ended up dancing our butts off up until the wee hours. Whether it's learning to dance to country music with free week-day lessons, singing karaoke in the front bar (literally always fun), ordering cheap drinks and shots, sucking down Jell-O shots with your friends, or cooling off on the rooftop patio... Very unsafe atmosphere Friday night Jan1 , people not wearing masks properly. Saw a few people ordering drinks from the bar without a mask on . Staff said nothing to them. A few rude obviously impaired individuals also not wearing masks properly, pulled down below their chins getting on the dance floor bothering the people trying to dance . One individual was warned more than once for having a pulled down mask while not drinking or eating and for being obnoxious by getting on the dance floor and harrassing one of the line dancers.(This individual also had his jeans hanging down showing his underwear, yeah thats what I wanna see) .Why this ahole was not thrown out of the bar after he was warned the 1st time is the bar management and security not doing their jobs. That was enough for me to leave and I will not be going back under such conditions. read more

I came here to celebrate a friend's 21st and we had so much fun! The interior reminds me of Texas Roadhouse and the drinks were very affordable. I went with a group of friends this weekend. We waited in line for 45 minutes and once we got to the door we had to pay $10 to get in. The bartender refused to serve myself and my female counterparts because he said we didn't tip the first time (I tipped $5 on one drink??). He told us to take our business somewhere else, so I walked to the bar across the way and that bartender was hateful to me and charged me $16 for and adios MF, when I paid $10 for a double adios MF the first time. I said why is this $16 and he said "If you don't like it how about you go somewhere else". Not to mention no one wore a mask. Music was great... but the bartenders were terrible. Will not be going back. Sexist assholes. I actually cried because the bartenders were so rude to me. You represent an entire community, not just the bar you work at. read more

It was initially fun but they have this massive dance floor that is apparently only for the same 3 or 4 couples to show off on. I get that two-stepping is something you should expect but at one point a really upbeat song came on and there was only 2 couples on the floor so 3 of us were dancing around on the edge of the floor and were told to get off. Everyone was packed in there like sardines dancing to them self along the wall outside the dance floor since they have the whole dance floor in the middle exclusively for two-stepping despite the beat of the song. I don't think that's what the people want but they've been told this is how it is. I saw the same 6 men on the floor the whole time when I'm sure a lot of other people would have enjoyed dancing together in the middle when the more dancey songs came on. I get it that there's clubs all on the street if you want to dance in a mosh but they have the set up to have an in-between every few songs and it's just wasted. There's absolutely no where to dance unless you're two-stepping which frankly a lot of people don't want to do. A lot of people don't want to club but would love to dance with their friends to an upbeat country song every few songs. I don't know who runs what but it felt very personal interest. Other than that everyone seemed to be having a good time but it's nothing to call home about. More of an older crowd but still a decent mix. It's like 75% good but they don't have any competition so they don't try to do better. read more

Yee-haw! Ride 'em cowboy! I tell you what, Round-Up has done gone and two-stepped their way into my heart. When the cab driver let us off at Cedar Springs the second night Jen and I went out, we noticed the whole street was blocked off. Suddenly, my Dallas friend's earlier Facebook post urging us to "visit their block party" began to make sense. A gay block party in Dallas, coincidentally on the weekend Jen and I come to visit. I swear we're so gay that when we get together, these sort of things just spontaneously materialize. We were handed a brochure that identified the event as "Razzle Dazzle Dallas 2011" before we made a donation that benefited those living with HIV/AIDS in the North Texas area. By the way, among their list of corporate and private sponsors, I was elated to see Yelp!. Kiosks lined the streets, live music was playing, and they had a bar serving Bud Light set up on the street. I wish I could say I planned all this specifically for Jen, but honestly...we just got lucky. First stop--Round-Up Saloon. You know, when I lived in Dallas...I never really gave this place a chance. Sure, I walked in a few times, made some friends, had some cocktails...but I was always lured back to the wilder scenes of JR's and TMC. To be blunt, The Round-Up crowd was too friendly for a snotty little queen like me back in the day. I've kept up with the bar through Facebook, and am constantly receiving invites for their events ranging from Texas Hold 'Em poker to free two-step lessons. And while I can't make it for the obvious logistical reasons, I always like to stay in the loop. The guys at the door were welcoming, and I forgot just how large this venue is. In addition to a sidebar, Several bar stations wrap around the large dance floor where cute gay couples dance to the familiar twang of country and western. The bar was clean, and the A/C was pumped, offering a much welcomed relief from the outdoor heat. Our bartender was extremely sweet and pleasant, and made us feel at ease right away. I asked him where I could find the DJ, Roger Huffman, who does an amazing job of promoting the bar on Facebook and even commented on a post or two of mine. He was right behind us in the DJ booth, and he recognized me immediately. He said it was great to finally meet me, and I said I couldn't stop by the Round-Up without saying hello. He's a really affable guy and was genuinely glad to see Jen and me. We made our way outside and relaxed on the multilevel rooftop patio for a bit. After a cocktail or two, we returned inside and took in a little of the dancing. The guys on the dance floor make it look so easy, just gliding and spinning so effortlessly. A guy I went on a date with once tried to teach me to two-step, and I did OK but promptly forgot how as soon as we went back to his place. A lesbian tried to teach me again at Rainbow Cattle Co., but that never stuck either. If a lesbian can't teach me to two-step, nobody can. So I'll just have to observe. This place was easily the friendliest gay bar in Dallas. There is a very obvious positive energy around it, and I am looking forward to returning. The Round-Up also is very special to me as this was the bar Lady Gaga chose to randomly show up at in the recent past to perform "Born This Way". According to the YouTube video: "Gaga Surprised everyone and performed at the bar in Dallas that helped give her her break before she became a superstar. When she's in Dallas, she has been known to stop by the Round Up Saloon to give her thanks to her gay supporters." So, the dance floor sort of doubles as a venerable shrine for me, as well. Of all the bars in the gayborhood, this is by far the most fun as a straight girl. I have only ever made it back to the dance floor once, because the sweet siren's call of karaoke in the front is irresistible to me. They have the best karaoke songbook, with lots of show tunes your every day karaoke DJ just doesn't carry. It's Dallas, there is an abundance of talented gays (and some straight people too - I once spent the night karoake-ing with members of the Polyphonic Spree) making the wait between your song choices enjoyable. However, be prepared to wait a while. Everyone in here wants to sing just as badly as you do. You'll find a supportive audience, a stupid amount of jello shots, and awesome song choices in abundance here. And the one time I did finally get convinced to leave the karaoke room, I had a blast dancing to ridiculous music. Super fun. read more

OH EM GEE. So much friggin fun, I hardly knew what to do with myself. Oh I know, I'll have another jello shot please. When we first arrived, the country was in full effect and there were only a handful of 2 stepers making their rounds on the floor. My friends and I mingled around the bar at some tables and met an interesting mix of people. One guy was SO excited when he found out I was korean, and began to tell me phrases in Korean and even wrote some words down on the back of a card. Adorable. After a rousing shout of I feel like a woman, the hit dancing tunes revved up and we were on the floor in a heart beat. Everyone was super friendly, and there was always someone to dance with! It wasn't so overly crowded that you couldn't move around and if you needed a breather, feel free to move along to the side. My friend did get her skirt raised up by an excited man, but all in good fun? She proceeded to murmur "my ass was exposed to the gay community.." at times. 2 AM came all too fast! This bar is, in my opinion, the best in Dallas. Everyone is friendly as Michael E. says and the drinks are mixed well for a cowboy bar. I was there Friday night after the Lady Gaga concert and guess who showed up...Lady Gaga herself. She got a mic and said she didn't come there because she was paid but because it's her favorite bar in Dallas. She also mentioned it in both her concert Thursday and Friday (I was there). It is a really great place and from someone who is on "the strip" quite a bit it is definitely a great place to go. Especially check out the second level of the patio, the view is great and it is a nice place to hold a conversation. As you pull up to Round-Up, if you can find parking, you'll find your prayers answered if you are both gay and country. I'm more country than gay but it's a close call. I love country music and this is the place to be at on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. I have been coming to this bar for years and it's great. Go talk to Tall Matt. They will take care of you. Drinks are made strong and the service is awesome. Some of the staff take their shirts off! OMG! And they are so damn cute. Their plaid shirts, tight blue jeans, and cowboy hats. The dance floor is huge and I love to two step and line dance. Great atmosphere and the cowboys are friendly too. No attitude here my friends. We're not big drinkers or dancers but we were eating down the street and took a few minutes to check this place out on a Saturday night, based on its reputation. This place was packed! The dance floor was full of people who danced much better than we ever could (maybe if we had had time for a few drinks first). The music modern country and showed the videos on the monitors, along with plenty of images of undressed hunky men and cowboys. No cover, everyone was friendly, the vibe was positive and people watching was fun. If we're in the area, we'll definitely stop back in and maybe try a turn around the dance floor. Part of the one-two punch of gay dance-clubs in Dallas (S4 being the other). Other clubs offer dancing, but none have the overall excellence of these two clubs, and the fact that they go after completely different audiences and offer complete opposites in fantastic experiences, really make gay Dallas-ites a lucky bunch indeed. On the surface it is a country bar of course, with country music and line-dancing, but don't let that scare you off if thats not your thing, the music will just be a background for the quality guys and good drinks you're about to have. There is just a different vibe to this place. From the brighter lighting, to the different, more mature (and I mean that in the best way) crowd. Friendly, but polite. Rowdy, but respectful. handsome, but humble. Much like the state of Texas itself. There are four main areas to the bar: The Parlor is the front bar open all afternoon and featuring karaoke many evenings. A seperate room for the pool tables (no maneuvering to avoid cue sticks...), a quiet back patio (don't worry, just throw the peanut shells on the floor), and then the main dancehall. Three main bars surround the dancehall plus a "tequila shack" if you're going to make a long night of it. Saturday night is the big night, no surprise there. But if you want to avoid the crowd (and it can be a CRUSH on Saturdays), the other nights give you more room and a chance to appreciate the place a little more. Instinct magazine just proclaimed the Round Up Saloon as the Best All-Around Gay bar in the USA.....that would be the ENTIRE nation. Why? Country music makes me cringe but somehow after watching the magic that is shirtless line dancing for five minutes made I was a changed forever. My disdain for country music became a distant memory once the speakers began to thump top 40 pop hits and electro-pop-techno beats whipping the tanned, toned and taut crowd into a frenzy. The patrons were extremely friendly and boasted physiques that would make even a trainer green with envy. That's right ladies...no need for a double take, all the guys you see there are prettier than you. Drinks were made well and service was pretty fast at the bar. Bathrooms were as expected, no stall doors, small and dingy and in dire need of an overhaul, but just more reason to get your ass out of there and on the dance floor!
