I want to dispute the one-star review by Carol H regarding curbside service at Rounds during the pandemic. I have repeatedly called them prior to their installation of excellent safety shields and they could not have been more courteous in taking my order by phone and bringing it outside. I decided to check out their safety efforts last week when I needed some bait for fishing. They have counter-to-ceiling plastic sheeting (which they also sell) and contactless card readers, and clearly marked floor designation for social distancing at checkout. Their aisles discourage violation of social distancing. I am 77, have a predisposing risk condition. I of course enter with KN95 mask and vinyl gloves. But it's one of the safest places to shop in Stoneham. If you ever have a problem, just ask for "Mr Round." read more

Quiet store but felt subjected to racism. I was in the store with my husband who happens to be black. We were followed around the store and asked by every associate if we needed anything. I did not see them approach any other of the few customers in the store. The checkout was the kicker. The man behind the Register clearly needed some training on respect. My husband was nothing but nice and the man could not return the appropriate and respectful kindness back. I suggest there be some workplace training done around diversity in this COUNTRY! read more

I always get what I need or helped to find what I need here. The guys are nice, and did I mention, helpful. Yesterday my husband and I stopped at Rounds Hardware, we were looking to get a replacement hinge that broke on our kitchen Lazy Susan cabinet. We had already looked on the internet, went to Lowe's, Home Depot, Whittemore in Melrose and had no success in locating a replacement. The gentlemen at who looked at the broken hinge immediately knew that Round's did not carry it. He could have left at that but he suggested to us to go to Woodcraft of Boston in Woburn MA. We took his advice and went to Woodcraft. Within less then 5 minutes in Woodcraft we had our replacement hinge. This type of excellent service is getting to be far and few, it is so nice to go to a smaller store like Rounds and get this type of help. Thank you! read more

I needed a few supplies ands wanted avoid crowds, Rounds advertised curbside pickup. Convenient location. I ordered online for delivery to Rounds, when notified, arrived and called for pickup. The person who answered was incredibly rude, "I don't have time for this", etc Deaf customers, all customers, should be treated politely. When I got my order they wanted a signature in the time of COVID-19!! No. Needless to say I'm looking elsewhere for any other needs. read more

On a very cold and rainy day in February one of the staff came out to help us figure out how to operate one of their pumps we'd purchased earlier in the day. A decent store. Bigger than you'd think. It's a lot deeper than you'd expect. It feels a bit cramped - but most of these local hardware stores do. I was looking for a replacement belt for my vacuum and they didn't have it. The clerk asked me on my way out if I found what I was looking for, and when I said no, this other girl piped up and directed me to a vacuum-specialty store on Montvale Ave. Pretty darn helpful. Good, local hardware store. They have a pretty good selection and are usually very helpful. The employees have given me suggestions on several things, ranging from light switches and bulbs to charcoal for my grill. If they don't have something, they usually suggest where I can find it. read more

Family business at their best. The family and staff bend over backwards to help you out. If you have a plumbing problem bring in your old parts or a crude description of what you are trying to do and the Rounds will connect the dots for you. Mr Round Sr. has spent hours with me over the years helping me solve some tough fixed I was in. Their hardware selection is extensive and their prices easily beat their competitors. I've been going to Rounds for almost 10 yrs, since moving to Melrose. I generally deal with Bruce, and I like him a lot. The father is there quite a bit (I think he's in his mid 80's), and he's always fun to strike up a conversation with. What I like about this place is that it's not Home Depot. Or Lowe's. Although it's a True Value store, it really is a family-run operation. I also like that whoever buys the shovels (I think it's Bruce) is a shovel geek. I've bought about 6 or 7 shovels over the years with various features. They have a lot packed into the place, and have always been helpful. Do they have everything Home Depot or Lowe's has? No, but you also don't have to deal with running into a 100,000 square foot place trying to find an extension cord or whatever, like you do with the big box stores. read more

I dropped a lamp off for my mother to be rewired in June. She wanted the electrical replaced because it was shocking her. I was told it would take some time. I went today 9/10 to see if it was ready, and a very nice younger employee went to find the lamp, but could not tell from the tag if it was ready or not. They called the person who was to rewire it, and he said "he tried to get ahold of me" and it "is too expensive to rewire". I checked the tag, they had the correct phone # with the word "text" next to it. I politely said he never called or texted and another staff kept insisting that he did. I finally ended up saying that if he said he did, he was lying. I was told they would pass the word along. How is it too expensive to rewire if I have no problem paying whatever the cost. It's a decorate lamp and really unique, it was expensive to purchase, therefore I have no problem with it being expensive to rewire. On a side note a woman was there ranting about paying $1,000 for paint that wasn't ready, and that she works full time and shouldn't have to wait 2 hours in line on a Saturday when she already sorted this. I'll admit I thought she was being unnecessarily rude, but then an older employee came down and very loudly shouted that someone named Bruce "effed it all up". He used the actual word though. It's too bad because I really like to support small businesses, but when you do you run the risk of dealing with some very eclectic people who are set in doing things the way they always have which may not be the most professional at this time. Save yourself the time and aggravation and find someone who is professional. read more

Went in today with my girlfriend .. Horrible, horrible customer service. We've been making frequent stops here since we moved to town this month.. all have been quite good, which is great because it's right up the street and we're happy to support a small local business. However, today was so markedly bad that those visits are irrelevant to me. I've been in line before and witnessed Bill Round, son of the owner, be completely dismissive, sarcastic and rude to customers in line. Today he walked away from us while we were explaining an issue with the magnetic strip on our card. And then when we called to express our frustration, hung up. I've been going to Rounds for over 20 years now. They almost always have whatever I need and advice on what to do with it - if I ask. I actually went in once looking for a gasket for an ancient blender - the old one so old it had become "petrified" - without any real hope of finding a replacement but they had them! I was fortunate enough to have visited Round's Hardware in Stoneham and had the pleasure of dealing with Hayden. Despite the fact that I had made a call to the Ace Hardware (different business!) and had them set aside a tree stand I needed, I wound up at Round's (partially out of habit and partly due to an age-related brain cramp!). When I realized I was at the wrong store, Hayden asked if he could assist with whatever I was looking for. I told him that Ace had the tree stand set aside for me and told him the price. Round's also had the same stand but at a slightly higher price. Hayden then asked me to wait while he checked with Bruce Round (owner/manager on duty) and asked if it would be OK to match the Ace price. Bruce approved it and I bought the stand. It is always refreshing to find young folks that are an asset to the business they work for and that "go the extra distance" to build those businesses. Hayden is one of those young people!!! In addition to writing this review I also made a phone call to Bruce to let him know he made a great decision hiring Hayden and thanking him for passing on the "Round's Customer Amazement Philosophy" that I have always experienced at their store. read more

There is literally nothing that I have gone in for that they don't have! And instead of walking around aimlessly looking Bruce (and others!!) are always willing to step up and find my part, Pipe and even pool equipment. Seriously, if you have a pool there is no place I'd rather go to get my water tested and then stock up on whatever is needed their prices are THAT competitive and the staff is THAT good! Also, I'd like to note that this year I am shopping with a crutch (or two) thanks to some nasty surgery and any time I have a heavy load someone is ALWAYS offering to take it to my car. They have it all - tools, pool supplies, paint, Christmas decor, sleds, etc. but I mainly come here for the customer service. The staff is great and always willing to help. Very knowledgeable and will even provide suggestions for other products they may not even carry, if that is the best solution. The folks that run the pool counter during the summer gave me a full education on pool chemicals last year, my first year with the pool. Thank you Rounds! read more

Also, their prices are extremely competitive, almost always significantly cheaper than Ace. Just had one of the absolute WORST customer service experiences ever ending with Bill Rounds (owner) hanging up on me! My magnetic stripe on my visa card would not work and I needed him to enter the information manually. Nope. He walked away from me several times, talking to and helping other customers, interrupting me and and basically told me I had no money to pay ("This is the ONLY card you have? You cannot put it in another card?"). He treated me terribly and totally embarrassed me in front if everyone in the store. Meanwhile that was literally 30 seconds after I just told Someone else there how happy I was to be a customer. I am mortified and totally horrified to be treated this way. When I called the store he actually hung up on me. I have never been treated so terribly in my life and I am just so disappointed in the way this went. I was really excited to have a local store to go to for all my hardware and gardening needs ... So much for giving my money to a small business and keeping it within the community. I doubt a kiddie aged man would have been treated that way, sincerely. read more

I have been shopping at Rounds Hardware more recently. I called earlier today and spoke with Bill Round. He was very friendly and took the time to speak with me regarding an item that was less expensive elsewhere. He happily matched my price after checking his cost and put at note on the register for me so the cashier would not doubt me when I arrived. After thanking him for working with me, I checked out the item on the front porch. It was raining today. His father came out and spoke with me in kindness He was surely an old schoolah! This is the exact experience I look for at at a local store. It is how it was when I was a kid and how things should continue to be. Hats off to Rounds. read more

There is nothing like a family owned hardware store that has everything you need. I was in yesterday( Blizzard day) to find something the other big stores did not/never had. The elder Mr Rounds was there ! They opened at 7:30am, the other places were still working on plowing their lot. This place has come up with items that I simply had no luck getting anywhere. A few times they ordered things I needed. Try and buy a couple of nuts and bolts,leather work gloves.have a key made by a human being that talks to you, not a machine. GO TO ROUNDS FIRST, they are simply the best traditional hardware store around. These are the type of places that belong in Yankee Magazine etc. Thanks to the Rounds Boys for keeping Dad's dream alive ! read more

We could just as easily have gone to Lowes or Home Depot for all these years. After all, both "big box" chain stores are closer to us, and cheaper. But we like to support local businesses and had been going to Rounds for many years, most recently to have the blades on our push mower sharpened. This mower had been working fine for decades, but the very first time we used the mower after the sharpening, it literally fell apart. No exaggeration - the wheel just fell off! The older gentleman (the owner? I don't know, he never thought to shake my hand and introduce himself, he just stood there, cup of coffee in hand acting as if I was an interruption to his day) was rude and dismissive, not willing to consider even the possibility that Rounds might - just might - be responsible for our broken mower which worked until they got their hands on it. No sympathy, no apology, no offer to make things right, just a wave of his hand that he wasn't responsible. I guess that is Rounds definition of "traditional." read more
