Presentation It was alright, it's a bar what do you expect? Service Many times I have been there the service was excellent. Environment Overall it has a country theme restaurant and it feels cozy when you walk in. It was always clean when I visited. Menu I liked their menu overall, but can't give high scores because your limited to bar food. Value This is where they shine, 2 dollar burgers on Tuesdays! I drove from Chicago particularly on Tuesday just to come here for their special and meet friends. Great food. Appetizers are all fresh made. Pork tenderloin sandwich was amazing and fresh made for each order (vs frozen processed ones). Fried mushrooms and onion rings were both fresh battered also. Service was spot on and very attentive. We will be back next time we are in Illinois! read more

Visited on a Friday night, parking lot was almost full, but once inside there are two dining areas, and both rooms had plenty of empty tables. My brother ordered pork tenderloin sandwich with onion rings, and his wife had the garlic Parmesan wings. They both enjoyed their dinner. I had the pork tenderloin with FF. I loved the onion rings and FF. The food was delivered hot and delicious. Our waitress was very attentive, I didn't catch her name, but the staff were all courteous and helpful. Typically, I have good experiences here. However, sometimes it takes awhile to get waited on, let alone get your food. That's never a convenience. However, my favorite things here are the Friday night fish fry, the Saturday night prime rib, and the route 20 punch (alcoholic). read more

My rating reflects service only, as we never got served. Upon entering, we were seated promptly, and given our drink order, which was water. It went downhill from there. When we ordered, the waitress wrote it on her hand! We were not impressed. Then we waited. And waited. About 20 minutes after I ordered, a table of 6 was seated next to us, and a friend with her family of 4 was seated in front of us. Both of them were served within 20 minutes of arriving. We were now 40 minutes in. The waitress came by once, to see if we wanted to order different drinks. We asked about our order. She said apologized for the delay, saying "the kitchen started cooking them in the wrong order". I should have asked if she remembered to clip her hand to the order carosel. After 50 minutes, I decided to help myself to the salad bar. I told my partner, "If we don't get served by the time I finished my salad, I'm walking out". We didn't, and we did. This was the 4th time in my life (I'm 59) I walked out of a restaurant. Three of the four times have been in Freeport, which says a lot about this dumpy little town. Ridiculous! I have 1 star because the salad bar was good, and the water was nice and wet, the way I like it. The service was a definite zero. read more

Very unprofessional owners. The owners wife seemed to have maybe drank too much the night we were there. My family witnessed her screaming at a customer one night when we were out. It's upsetting because the food is good but I have never seeing awful ownership or treatment of customers (especially in front of such a large crowd). read more

We heard good reports about this place and when we got there it clean and larger than I thought. Service was quick, but the Prime Rib was sub par being dry. However, on our way out we saw a fabulous piece of prime ribbed being served. It just wasn't ours. Maybe we will give it another try sometime. read more

Our Wedding Anniversary was Saturday so we decided to go to Route 20. There were (12) of us that were seated in the rear of the dinning room. Our Waitress was very young and seemed very nervous while she was taking our drink order.She couldn't tell me what Tequila's they had without going to the bar and asking. She brought just (6) of the heated buns when there were (12) of us. She cake back with our drinks so we asked for more of the warmed buns but they never made it to our table. When she returned to take our order for supper, my wife's brother asked for a tap beer which never made it to our table. So my wife's brother asked her a 2nd time for the beer and that never made it to our table. As we finished our salads and appetizers the empty plates remained on our table. We then asked a different waitress for some more warmed buns and she brought us (12) warmed buns Finally! My wife's brother had to go to the bar three different times to get his tap beer. Our original Waitress was also taking care of people seated in the bar area so from the time we were seated she was only at our table maybe four times over more than the two hours we were at the table. Our original Waitress came back with our total for the evening and never offered an Deserts. We were very disappointed with the way our table service was handled! We have never ever had an experience at Route 20 Bar & Grill like we did Saturday Night. The food was Great as usual and arrived at our table in about 15 minutes. We just didn't understand how this could happen! The evening was not cheap because there was prime Rib ordered along with some big Steaks and the Bar Tab was also pretty expensive. Stopped on a drive toward Galena because the reviews said great burgers... Unfortunately, that was not accurate. The marquis 'Route 20 Burgers' ordered medium were beyond well done with crusty outside and with missing ingredients. What was supposed to be a 1/2 lb burger didn't seem much bigger than a BK whopper. Our appetizer was forgotten, and our 4 meals (2 burgers, 1 fried chicken and 1 grilled ham and cheese) took 40 minutes to get to us after ordering. I try and stop at new places to find new stops for the future.. This was just one to put on the 'will not return' list. read more

Driving back from Galena in the middle of a bad snow storm, we decided to stop here and grab some lunch. Wow we were shocked at how great of a hidden gem this place is. The route 20 burger was awesome and possibly the best onion rings I've ever had. Huge portions and good prices. The steaks look darn good too, have to try that next time. CONS: We did not have a good experience here. Waited 45 minutes to get waited on and had some of the worst food around. Maybe we should give it a second chance, but would hate to waste another meal out there so it'll be a long time before that happens. PROS: it is a good "bar" atmosphere. WHAT A DUMP. WHAT A DUMP!!!! Where to start? The food? Unpredictable: sometimes edible, sometimes not so much, never great. The staff? Most are friendly and work hard, so too bad for them they work in a pig sty. The owner? Thumbs down. He berates the hard working staff in front of customers and has done it with a room full of customers, including children. He tries to get patrons involved in his rants and berates them when they don't chime in with him. The negative reviews for this dump have proliferated on Facebook and other social media and confirm my opinion. My friend was unable to eat her fish dinner the other night and we were afraid to complain because of the owner's erratic behavior. We tipped our waitress well and left, as it was not her fault the fish was undercooked; we figured other patrons might stiff her because of the owner's actions and poorly prepared food, and it was not her fault--she doesn't run the kitchen. There are plenty of good places to eat around here--almost no one does not have a Friday fish fry--so why bother to go to a place that is shoddy, has poor ambience, and bad food? Never again--this was the 2nd time we tried this place--it was bad the first time so out of fairness thought we'd give it another shot.
