Super cool and unique cafe in downtown Santa Cruz, that's also open later than most spots! We were craving acai bowls towards the end of the day, and this was the only place open. They have a variety of options for acai bowls, as well as really cool drinks, aka the elixirs. Each one serves a different purpose i'd say which is super cool and fun to browse through. The worker was super friendly and helpful when we asked questions. The inside is also such a cool vibe, with hammocks hung up and multiple cozy hang out spots. Came here not really knowing what to expect, especially being in the middle of a food mall, but it ended up being a really solid find. The staff gave some great recommendations and the dandelion tea was honestly amazing, smooth, earthy, and just hit right. The vibe caught me off guard in a good way. We had high hopes going in to this place .. visiting from LA. We love to try new businesses and support them as I was a small business owner myself. I know how hard it is to make it. The place is cute and a cute concept. I ordered a bubblegum smoothie and my husband ordered an acai smoothie. When I rec'd mine it was barely cold and super watery... this drink is $13 plus I left a $2 tip. I was not happy with the flavor or how soupy the drink was ... it should not have been called a smoothie. My husband liked his which was thick, creamy and cold. I went up to the two girls working there and told them I was not happy with my smoothie and if they would be able to make me something else. One girl answered yes while the other said I have to ask a manager first. They got back to me and said sorry we can't make anything else. I asked if the manager was there and again one girl said yes while the other said no. So whether or not the owner was there .. I wasn't sure. They refused to make me another drink while I left my $15 so called smoothie by the dirty dishes. I was so disappointed with how they treated me and I would visit this place with caution. So I spent $15 on no drink and sitting in a hammock. Maybe they should rethink how to treat people and how to give good customer service. read more

I am extremely disappointed by the way my group and I were treated at Roxa Cafe. I recommended this café to members of the nonprofit organization I'm involved with who were visiting from out of town, expecting a welcoming experience. Unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. Initially, five of us entered the café and ordered drinks while the rest of our group explored the area. When everyone met back at the café, nearly the entire group also purchased drinks. Only three or four people were still deciding, yet staff repeatedly questioned whether they were going to order instead of allowing them a reasonable amount of time to look over the menu. The most upsetting part occurred after we had finished our drinks. We politely asked where we should place our empty glass cups. As we were showing the employee the cups we were holding, she accused our group of trying to steal them. The accusation made no sense, as we were literally asking where the cups should be returned. Our group is made up entirely of Hispanic women, and the way we were treated left all of us feeling singled out and unwelcome. While I cannot know what motivated the employee's actions, I can say that the experience left our entire group feeling targeted and deeply uncomfortable. Hoping to resolve the situation respectfully, we called the café after we left. The same employee who had accused our group of trying to steal the glass cups answered the phone. Instead of listening to our concerns or attempting to resolve the issue, she became hostile, used profanity, and told us to "stop fucking calling here." We came to support a local business, and the majority of our group purchased drinks. Instead, we left feeling embarrassed, disrespected, and unwelcome. I sincerely hope Roxa Cafe reflects on how customers are treated because no group should leave a business feeling the way we did. read more

Super cool aesthetic inside and almost a hidden gem being located off the Santa Cruz downtown strip. I've never seen a place quite like this before with hammocks on two stories of the building. We had a great time relaxing in them and eating our acai bowl. We ordered one of their acai bowls and it was a bit pricey for the portion, the acai was also really uniquely tart than usual. I had to get used to the tartness of it. Also, I want to reiterate from the recent reviews of one of the employees. I was trying to order and also look at the menu and she seemed very impatient and came off kind've rude when we were standing at the wrong place at the counter. Finally got to experience the vibes here at Roxa Hammock Cafe and I'm pretty impressed especially being situated in Downtown Santa Cruz! Staff were friendly and helped me pick out a latte to enjoy while chilling in the hammock. My drink was around $9 which seems high but is almost expected given the rampant inflation we're seeing now. The hammocks themselves were fun to try out. There are a few hanging downstairs and more "private" ones on the second floor. There were a mix of people inside chillin and chatting, to some even sleeping in them. I suppose as long as you buy a drink, you'll have access to the hammocks. Kids were also free to roam around and some ended up playing hide and seek around our area. Just a heads up in case you see any young kids coming in that they are going to want to look around and explore. read more

Visiting Santa Cruz for a family member's graduation from UCSC, we noticed this metaphysical tea house & elixir bar, Roxa (Roe-Shaw) Hammock Cafe while walking around the main strip of Downtown. This was our favorite discovery of the trip. We felt so at home here with the big, soft jewel tone couches and chairs placed among hammocks hung from the rafters with dark walls, alchemical art, and large windows as a setting. Soothing music played and the mixologists behind the counter were so inviting and informative. Private rooms decorated with tarot card themes and silk curtains drawn for privacy, and an upstairs for more privacy while people-watching made us feel even more at home. We ordered: - Dandelion Cappuccino - Gf Barley & Rye, Chicory, Dandelion, Beetroot, Raw Honey. Served as a warm, comforting roast. Detoxifying coffee alternative for gut microbiome, health & stomach pain. This drink was absolutely delicious, creamy and comforting - exactly what I needed after traveling. - Piper's Calling (x2) (we ordered one using pineapple juice and the other using original grapefruit juice) - Chuchuhuasi, Piper Methysticum, Pine Pollen, Piperine, L Tyrosine, Areca Nut. Our server explained that this was the only drink they had with kava at the moment. I took a few sips of my daughters and my tongue did go a little numb and I liked the affect it gave. This is supposed to be a healthy alternative for alcohol to relax and feel sociable. It's a beautiful dim lighted hammock cafe where they mostly serve teas/coffees/smoothies along with açaí bowls! We ordered the Golden Reishi-Os hot chocolate drink & banana chocolate smoothie drinks! Such a cozy cafe! There was ample seating, perfect for a casual hangout. My family and I lounged on the hammock chairs while sipping on our elixirs. We got the Lazarus Latte, Desert Flood Latte, and Alchemist Coffee. You can really taste the layers of each drink. My desert flood latte was good and was pretty sweet. Rich flavor but something that threw me off a bit was the big clumps of orange maca powder that I sipped up through the straw randomly throughout drinking it. It was a little bitter and the powdery texture wasn't ideal for me (would've wished they blended it into the drink more). Overall, friendly service and fun drinks! This was my first time ever visiting this hammock Café and I really like the different drink/elixir tea and açai able options! I ended up getting their version of a iced coffee with honey as a sweetener and my friend got some other elixir. But both of us like our drinks and they were decent, but it was more of a café you would go for the vibe. Everything was very relaxed and kickback. The hammocks were different heights, which was nice for taller people, granted we are shorter, and so we sat at two of the longer hammocks so we could fit in there comfortably without having to climb too high! Lol Perhaps the caffeine from the drinks got to us, but my friend and I were laughing too much we think and we felt we were too loud for the quiet relaxed environment that this particular place had. If you're into witches, magic, are part of a coven, or dabble in the dark arts, this spot is for you. They call themselves an alchemical elixir bar and metaphysical tea house, so a lot of the drinks tend to be kind of like adaptogens. It's right on the main strip in downtown Santa Cruz, so if you're in the area, you should definitely pop in. I have wanted to try this place for the longest time and was super excited to come in these past few times. While the vibe and atmosphere is super amazing and unique compared to other places nearby, I have a hard time getting past how expensive it is. The staff was super nice and the hammocks were incredible. The description of the drinks are certainly interesting! As for the food, my friend ordered a acai bowl for $15 and the size was pretty small for the price. I also ordered a tea and some matcha lattes ($8 for the tea and $12 for the matcha, about 12oz cup size) and the matcha was very bitter. The hot tea was good, but in the end just hot water and tea leaves. As far as I can tell, the ingredients aren't particularly special either in the sourcing or specific high quality. It's a fun place to hang out with friends and experience something new and different, especially if you are into herbal remedies and elixirs. But in the end I can't see myself coming back for any others drinks or menu items because of the price. Maybe the price reflects the atmosphere of the café, but I feel there are other cafes that are more affordable and just a casual. read more

Overall: Drinks: meh Decor/vibe: not my style, but also not feeling super clean/taken care of Customer service: good, but a bit less professional than I'd prefer when consuming food/beverages made in house (hair should be pulled back, at bare minimum). I really wanted a cup of warm, decaffeinated tea the other night, and I had walked by this place a few times, so we popped in. Their tea selection is mostly black teas (plus green). That's my first wish-- that they had a slightly larger selection of decaf teas. Secondly, when I got my tea, it still had the tea bag in it, which doesn't really make sense to me, because it's the kind of tea that gets bitter once it's over-infused. I also noticed that the drinkware is very eclectic, so it seems like the amount of beverage you'll get isn't necessarily standardized. Given the signage, maybe this is because people kept stealing the mugs/glassware? We sat on a couch that had a cushion that was mostly peeled off (pleather?), so to me, the vibe in parts of this place is very... college basement. The person helping us was friendly, but other people working behind the counter seemed like they weren't properly trained to pull back hair, so it won't get in the food/drinks. read more

What a total disappointment. I went in there feeling all excited as there is couches and it's so cozy. I paid $10 for a drink out which is a little pricey., but it felt worth it for the nice atmosphere. However, as soon as I sat down, I realize that they were playing intense heavy metal music. Now I am very open-minded and I can handle a lot. But sitting in a café, listening to heavy metal to super food drinks felt completely lacking in any kind of coziness. So I asked her if she could please change the music to something a little bit more relaxing and she said she couldn't. Her boss wouldn't let her. So I had to take my $10 drink in it to go cup and go somewhere else where I could sit and actually think and relax. I'm really bummed and I think they should put themselves up as a heavy metal café. If this is the kind of environment they are wanting to create. Because this is not a cozy café vibe and if you're gonna charge a lot of money for your drinks, then make sure that the people sitting there are going to have a nice experience. read more

Really cool spot to check out in Santa Cruz for the seating alone. There's hammock chairs everywhere, and they're super comfy to relax in. The cafe is tucked away off the street, and parking is a little difficult since it's in downtown. We tried their acai bowl and the bee Frappuccino. The acai bowl had really great homemade almond butter and the fruits were very fresh. The acai itself was a bit too sweet for me. My bf really enjoyed his Frappuccino. I spent a few hours here yesterday afternoon (Saturday), talking with newly-made acquaintances and learning about life in Santa Cruz for today's youngest generation. The blue spirulina drink I had was ho-hum for the price (~$10), but the other drinks I tried were pretty good. I have my eye on the Acai smoothies for a future visit. If you're looking for a uniquely Santa Cruz-ian experience, this humble cafe will make you feel like you're back in 2005, hanging out in a hippie co-op with roommates whose lives are slowly degrading from constantly being stoned. I got motion sick from the hammocks, but pretty much everyone else seemed fine. I would likely not return here by myself, but would with a group looking for environmental conversation starters. They also serve their drinks in handmade ceramic mugs, which adds to the awesomeness of it all. Hammocks are hung at different heights so people don't smack into each other, and you can use the tree stumps to climb into the tall ones. It helps to go with a friend who can hand you your drink after you do hammock-climbing - haha. If it's your first time there, the staff can explain the drinks to you and even ask you what "feeling" you are looking for, so they can make proper recommendations. Walking into this Cafe, I was immediately struck by the ambiance and music. This place definitely has a laid back and relaxing vibe to it - I mean cmon, the place has hammocks! It's a great place to do some light productive work or strike up a conversation with friends. Speaking of conversation, you'll have plenty to talk about when looking over the menu. There are several menus here which can be quite overwhelming at first, but it is easy to pick out what you want since they are organized clearly. Not to mention, each menu itself is a work of art. The drinks on the menu are the star of the show here. You'll find some of the most exotic ingredients & herbs that are mixed together in some of the most intriguing concoctions I've ever seen. We ordered the Wolfsbane and the Wander Lust. The Wolfsbane tasted amazing, spot on piña colada. This drink gives you a floaty, relaxing feeling. The Wander Lust was a bit stronger with complex flavors of fruit blended with early undertones. The menu said to get full effect, you should drink it fast, but I couldn't help but sip it slowly and really enjoy the flavor of each sip! The feeling I got from the Wander Lust was a clearheaded and intoxicating feeling, and all I wanted to do was strike up an interesting conversation. Unique concept but just kind of feels musty and sticky. They probably clean regularly but the combined lack of airflow, ornamental clutter, and fabric/leather everywhere isn't my favorite I've been here a few times and the novelty wore off after a while. I do sincerely love the alchemy/New Age/spiritual theme though. It definitely has a charm to my tarot-reading self. That being said, the service is exceptionally slow for average payoff. Açaí bowls are a bit watery and the drinks are fine. Kinda pricy for what you get. NOTE: One of the most disgusting-smelling bathrooms I've ever been in my entire life. It doesn't seem like there's a fan to circulate the air and the dried flowers hanging + dim lighting don't do the smell any favors. The key is attached to a square container that you have to place on the bathroom floor, which then gets placed back on the checkout counter... Where your drinks are served. Went there today and the ambience was nice and the hammocks were relaxing. The drinks ranged from okay to horrible. We got the Lazarus latte which was okay but they took very long on our other drink so the ice latte was sitting there for a very long time before our name were even called to get our drinks. We also got the Mexican something coffee and that was not good at all, hard to swallow to be honest. Also the wait time for our drinks was ridiculous, we ordered 3 drinks and waiting for about 20 minutes and other people who ordered after us were getting served. We never would've discovered Roxa Hammock Cafe had it not been for Instagram reels. It's truly a hidden gem, tucked away in downtown Santa Cruz. The vibe was exactly what we were hoping for - cool moody lighting, relaxed ambiance, hammocks everywhere, and a little dog sleeping near the entrance. The menu was eclectic with mood altering elixirs, tonics, smoothies, smoothie bowls, and some coffee drinks. I ended up choosing the Açaí Smoothie and my friend got the Immune Support Smoothie. While we waited for our drinks, we went upstairs and enjoyed the hammocks. There were two floors of seating (swinging?), so there were plenty available. Our smoothies were both tasty and I especially liked the gluten free granola on mine. The Immune Support Smoothie was also good - tropical, heavy on the pineapple. I can't believe I've never noticed this place before since we often go to Abbott Square which this alleyway is right next to. I walked in after noticing all the hammocks throughout the shop. It was like an adult playroom. The drink menus are a bit confusing for someone who doesn't know more much about herbs, but the bartenders were very nice in going over which drinks elevated mood/energy, which were calming etc. I'll start my saying, I'm not a huge believer in all this stuff. I've tried all sorts of herbal supplements to help me sleep, and nothing seems to really work. But whatever was in Skull Chatter was magical. My whole body felt so relaxed, tingly, like I was a bit tipsy. It also tasted very good, like a light fruity cocktail. I would drink this EVERY night if I could! I had my kiddos with me, and certainly most drinks are probably not good for a child, but they were able to make them a pineapple based smoothie that was also very good! Great concept. Non alcoholic herbal "elixirs" with ingredients sourced from all over the world. Whether they do as they promise or not, it's fun to hope, and not spend money on something that's damaging you, realistically. The prices for the specialty drinks are similar to cocktails at most bars ($9-13 if I recall). It's peaceful inside, with people lounging around alone or with friends. Kids love it, but also a great place to go with a group of friends or on a date. Maybe washing the rope hammocks, if possible, from time to time would be nice. Next time I would ask for my açaí bowl to be less sweet. With the granola and honey it was too sweet for me, despite the healthy ingredients. I think if their prices were $2 less per drink, people who like this place may go more often. All in all, a cool place worth going to. More creative places like this are needed in general. read more
