We went to Royal Biryani for Valentine's day dinner before a movie at the nearby theater. This looked like a good place with a 97 health department score. Decent food with biryani and tikka masala, and we tried the shrimp appetizer also. Near the end of the meal a ROACH ran across the table on the side close to the wall. I killed it with a napkin and showed it to the waitress as she was walking over. She said "oh, sorry about that" and took the napkin from my hand, then said "but the food was ok right?". No offer to comp even part of the meal, either from the waitress or the man who took our payment at the register (we told him too). We both felt nauseated and left. If you are looking for a romantic dinner, this is apparently not the place. Also, if you expect the staff to care about contaminated food and insects running around, may want to avoid this one on that account as well. read more

A quick Yelp search after leaving the salon lead me to this Indian spot. This is small cozy location that ended up being a little busy after I placed my order. I ordered the Aloo Gobi medium spice and thanks to the gentleman working there for advising me about their many different spice levels. The staff here seemed to have gotten overwhelmed with orders or something because I waited entirely too long for what I ordered and if I wasn't so hungry I probably would've just asked for my money back and left. There were other people coming in to pick up call in orders and none of them were ready. I don't know if this is a regular thing here or they were just short on help this particular day but the wait time was brutal and it didn't help to ask them about the order because no one knew. Fortunately, the food was really good, seasoned well and the spice level was great but I doubt I will return as I value my time and there are many other great Indian spots around the city. read more

The food is great but the wait time for the food even on a pick up order is unacceptable. The restaurant has great potential but as of right now I would have to say it's not there yet. I placed and order and had to wait an hour for it to be cooked. I went to pick up the food after 45 minutes of waiting and the food was still not ready the man upfront told me it would be another 20 minutes of waiting. Kind of sad that this is the ONLY Indian restaurant in Matthews but even if there were other restaurants, this one would outshine the rest. The food here is fantastic and the lunch special is a steal. I had the Chicken Tikka Masala, a meal that is generally the same no matter where you go. Food is very good, if a bit expensive. Not many Indian options in Matthews so I was excited for something so close. Says they do dine in, but they're definitely not setup for it. I received my food, then our appetizer came 5 minutes later, followed shortly by my wife's haleem and probably 10 minutes later my son's biriyani came out. No glasses, water is bottled and $1.20, which costs more than their canned soda offering. A pitcher of tap water would be fine, but wasn't offered. Something to keep in mind if you order something spicy... Mango lassy came in small styrofoam cup. Would probably order again for takeout, but the meals seemed lacking. Order a kebab and that's all you get, $10 for a couple chunks of meat. $14 haleem, same deal. No bread, no rice, no veg, everything is ordered separately. Atrocious quality of food. When this place opened it looked like a place that would serve authentic Hyderabadi dishes at a reasonable price. The quality of the food steadily came down to a point where their food tastes very stale and has ZERO flavor. Looks like the owners of this place threw in the towel and are pretty much out to get whatever they can before they eventually shut down this place. The attitude of the people that work at this place isn't very helpful either when it comes to addressing customer complaints about the quality of the food that's served. Quite possibly the slowest restaurant in Matthews. Waited half an hour for my Goat Haleem. To make things even worse, the Goat Haleem sounds great on paper, what the menu description conveniently leaves out is that all ingredients are puréed together. I have never dined in here but we order take out a few times a month. I love that it's a family owned business and authentic. The Chana Masala, Biryani (I like veggie and my husband loves shrimp which isn't technically on the menu but they're flexible and will add it for an additional fee) and Yellow Dahl are delicious. This is authentic hyderabadi cuisine. I had the Nihari which was delightfully aromatic and tender and the kabobs were succulent. I'm tired of dried out over cooked kabobs so really great that they got it right. I've eaten at most of the local Indian places but this is really outstanding. Also found staff to be friendly and responsive. Nice that it's right next to the movie theater. This is my new fav for kabobs in Charlotte. Went on a busy night, we had the Kathmandu chicken, tandoori kabob, chicken biryani and lamb biryani. The Kathmandu chicken was very flavorful, even my kids gobbled it up and wanted more. The tandoori chicken was juicy and had perfect blend of slices and the biryani was also pretty good. Ended the evening with hot masala chai. I got the biryani- not my favorite but it was excellently made, just not exactly what I wanted. Got a tikka masala to go, also delicious! We visited for the first time a few days ago. We weren't sure what to order so my fiancé and I went for the Chicken Biryani. We were told that our food would be ready in 20mins and it was. They gave us a great portion of food and it was served hot and fresh. The Biryani was delicious, full of spices with a little kick. If you've never had it before I would recommend that you do. It came with two sauces I'm not sure what they were but if you do not like your food very spicy refrain from the brown sauce.
