I really appreciate that Royal Café offers a variety of vegan (non-dairy) gelato flavors. That's uncommon at ice cream shops, and they deserve a lot of credit for it. The staff are friendly and helpful, too. Honestly, though, the best feature of this place is its location. It sits right near the Erie Canal, so you can get a cup of gelato, walk a few hundred yards down the canal path, and then settle onto a bench, look out over the water, and enjoy your gelato. That setting does more for the experience than anything on the menu. I do have a few concerns, though. The plastic serving cups are too small for the amount of gelato they hold, so it tends to melt and run down the sides, making for a messy experience. The plastic "spoon" is weirdly shaped like a small, flat shovel, and I much prefer a utensil shaped like a conventional spoon. Lately I've taken to bringing my own metal spoon with me. The cups also have an odd scalloped shape rather than smooth sides. I don't see any advantage to it, and it just makes getting all the gelato out harder than it should be. Switching to bigger cups with smooth sides, ideally biodegradable paper, would be an easy fix. As for the gelato itself, it's good but not great. I do enjoy sitting outside on a warm summer evening with a cup, but I can't say I ever find myself craving the product. Finally, and this is admittedly a very minor point, "Royal Café" is not a great name for this type of establishment. It sounds more like the name you would expect for a Chinese restaurant. read more

Staff was very apathetic & seemed to have no joy in their job. My husband ordered a Nutella flavor which didn't taste like any Nutella we have ever had. My watermelon was very lightly flavored but wasn't a natural watermelon taste. My daughter had blackberry that tasted like soap & strawberry that was just mild. Gelato is on point here! They have a solid selection of flavors with something for everyone. I got Oreo, Sea Salt Caramel and S'mores. The small is 3 small scoops and they have the medium and large on display to show you what you're getting. Prices seemed reasonable for such delicious gelato. There was no one there when we arrived so service was very fast and easy. We tried this place for the first time last week. We will be back! I love that even with a small dish, you can select 3 flavors. If it isn't too hot, it would be nice to sit outside. We chose inside the day we went as outside was in direct sun. Service was friendly. Before or after you have some gelato or sorbet, Fairport is a really nice town for a walk. I love Gelato, and this is now my new favorite place! Location: it's a small shop off a main street so it can easily be missed. But if you ride along the canal you can't miss this place. There's a large parking lot that's shared with the business around, so parking is not an issue. The business is small, with a couple of indoor tables but there's space outdoors with a great view. Food: OMG- it was soooo good. My husband and I shared the spaghetti Gelato-it had homemade brownie bits, vanilla gelato, whipped cream, homemade strawberry sauces, and chocolate sauce. It was so good! The favors were fresh and light. People: the owner was so nice, she served us with a smile and made sure that everything tasted great! We visited the Villiage of Fairport every year - and Sasik hasn't changed... i could imagine after a while people asking to try different flavors of your product could get on your nerves - but your in a business that invites this, you have to expect it; this is not a business that you snap at people when they ask to try a certain flavor - i think Sasik may need to look for another type of profession or keep himself in the back of the house owner. Tonight we went there for a fun family outing. All 8 of us bought gelato and spent alot of money. While we were eating the gelato, my husband was hungry and went down the road to get a Philly cheese steak. About 10 minutes later, my husband came back in the store with his food to sit with us. He was told by the manager to leave. Not nicely either. He said we can't have outside food in the establishment. If that's a health law, we would have liked to seen this law. However, the manager did not even speak to us further, but went in the back and hid. The whole family left angry and unwanted. Not to mention we thought the gelato was watery and flavorless.
