I can't recommend this place at all. I asked for the waistband of a skirt to be adjusted, and the results were, frankly, embarrassing and unprofessional. The tailor chose a bright, contrasting thread color which meant the seam was immediately obvious. The seam was not aligned, leaving an obvious bump. The altered segment of waistband was noticeably thinner than the rest, and one side of the fabric was never sewn back, leaving a gaping hole on the skirt's inside. To top it all off, when one of the buttons came off, the tailor replaced it with a clearly incorrect button that he insisted was "close enough." I'd like to call this a lack of attention to detail, but this goes beyond that. Do not come here, you will be disappointed. read more

An absolute nightmare. Avoid at all costs. I paid $100 in advance for alterations to a beautiful white silk dress. When I arrived on the agreed upon date to pick it up, it had not been worked on! The tailor insisted that the date was the day before - finally accepted reality. I was in a horrible bind and he agreed to do it for the following morning right before I had to leave town. I show up and try on the dress the next day and only 1 of the 2 critical alterations were made. He shortened the sleeves but did not use this fabric to make the bust larger. Obviously it was still pulling and looked horrible and he tried to make out like it was fine. WTF?! I left very angry and have since discovered that there are blue ink pen stains around the area where he hemmed the sleeves. NEVER go here. He's totally lost it. read more

After having the jacket for one week and 2 days late on delivery, this dude delivers the worst, and most UNPROFESSIONAL tailoring job I have ever seen. I will attach pics. Super pleased with the work I had done here! I needed sleeves added to my bridesmaid dress, as well as the bottom hemmed and the top taken up and opened up a bit. All in all I paid around $170 for everything (which is a pretty good deal considering most places charge $100 alone just to add sleeves.) I told them I needed the dress done in two months and they had it ready for me in a week I was worried the sleeves would look cheap/like someone forced them on the dress, but I think they look super natural! I went back a week later asking if they could remove the built-in padding from the bust, and they did it on the spot for me. I'm very satisfied and definitely recommend this place! read more

What I thought was going to be a great experience turned out to be the worst. I dropped off a pair of pants yesterday evening to get a simple press and hem job done. I was delighted that they were able to turn around the job last minute. I was told the cost and proceeded to attempt to use a credit card. However, I was told they accept cash only, and I then proceeded to pay cash to the gentlemen and he marks the $30 invoice paid. I wait for a receipt while he goes off to the back. She then comes around and writes my order/transposes onto another invoice and hands be a yellow receipt with the time to return. Why? I don't know. I take the copy anyways, and I didn't 100% understand what she was saying due to language barrier. I return to pick up my pants today and was told that I still needed to pay!!! After back and forth with them about paying, I had to concede and pay the invoice again!!! So, $60 for a simple job! Good work but a rip off! They need to get an electronic system for better record keeping. I would not return here ever again after this experience. read more

Let me say, I was very nervous trying to find a tailor to hem and alter my $200+ bridesmaid dress. I read tons of reviews and when I saw what people had to say about this place I thought I'd give it a try. But, I was still nervous. Well, I made a great choice by coming here and I couldn't be more pleased with the service I received and the quality of the work that was done. Price was fine; a bit expensive, but to be expected based on the quality of the work and the quick turnaround they offered (1 week!). Cash only and half of cost expected up front. Some people on here have made comments about a language barrier, but that was not my experience. I understood the tailor perfectly and he communicated everything that needed to be said. He is great at what he does and I will certainly be coming back here the next time I need work done! read more

Last minute altering to a dress I wanted to wear to a wedding, I called in asking how soon could he finish altering my dress to be shorter. He said he could do it same day. Although I paid a lot, it was my fault for being super last minute so I don't mind paying the cost at all. I walked in to a small little place in this beautiful building called The Philadelphia Building. He greeted me with a smile in his dapper outfit. I don't know if the lady working there was his wife, but they were both very kind and pleasant people. I came back a few hours later to pick up my dress just a tad early. They had finished it. Beautifully altered and done well. He handed it to me, smiled and told me to have a nice day. I recommend people to definitely go here if they want good, fast, and pleasant service. read more

WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE. I brought them 2 dresses late in the afternoon on Friday, December 7th. They were very honest with me and answered all of my questions. Specifically, the tailor told me that one of the dresses would take too long and he wouldn't have time to complete it by Saturday, but he could make time for the second dress. I asked them if they could have it altered by 5:00 p.m. the following day. They had it ready for pickup at 3:00 and only charged me $45 for both the alterations and rush. Had to get a suit and dress altered for a wedding. I was very adamant that I wanted the pant legs tight at the ankle and a little tighter at the knee. The guy only did the ankle and told me that "I didn't want it too tight" but I did. Tight fitted suits look the best and anybody with a semblance of style knows this. My girlfriends dress was barely altered despite needing to be made shorter, and tighter. Dude basically did the bare minimum and not what we asked for and charged us full price. I guess if you're a 45 year old guy who still thinks straight leg suits look good than this is the place for you. If you want quality work done I would NOT go here. read more

I dropped off a jacket and 3 pants to be altered. The owner called me to let me know it was ready. The jacket was misplaced and when it found it, it had not been altered at all. It still had all the pins in it from measuring me when I dropped it off. I asked for my pants to be tapered, he altered the waist. 174 dollars and 3 weeks later and none of my clothes fit. I haven't used a tailor in the city before, but I needed a dress hemmed professionally for an upcoming event, and this place seemed promising. Based on previous reviews, my experience was just as stellar and the cost was even cheaper. Mr. Chun was very nice and helped me find a good length for the hem - he marked it with a single pin. I told him I needed it to be finished in 6 days, and he nodded and smiled. It's a very simple dress with only one layer of material, and he charged $25. I was pleased since I was expecting it to cost me $35 based on other reviews. I panicked momentarily when I saw that the pick-up date he recorded on my slip was 10 days later (not 6 days like I requested), but I told myself it was surely a miscalculation. Just in case, I showed up 4 days later hoping to confirm with him that it would be ready in the next 2 days. I was happily surprised to find that my dress was already finished and was in better condition than it started (some of the deep wrinkles were gone). I'll be back next time I need something hemmed! Just remember to give ample time for pick-up, bring cash, and hold onto your slip. read more

TL;DR: The man can tailor. I was referred to Royal Custom Tailor by both the staff and the in-house tailor at SuitSupply, the latter of whom said that Mr. Chun was the best tailor in Philadelphia. I was nervous, however, because I had read some reviews here about perhaps a language barrier and a somewhat chaotic shop that put clothes at risk of being lost. Nonetheless, taking a leap of faith, I took several pairs of pants in to be tailored (all at the same time, rather than testing the waters with just one pair). Some needed the seat taken in, some the seat taken out. Some needed the leg to be tapered, some needed it to be widened (i.e., the pants were too tapered and clung to my calf). Some needed the hem to be lengthened, some shortened. You get the picture. Long story short, Mr. Chun was masterful. Language was NOT a problem. He automatically hemmed the pants with a guardsman slant (higher in the front, slanting downward toward the heel). He instinctually knew the width of the leg opening that I had wanted without my having to tell him. And so on. Since that first time only two months ago, I've been back at least a half dozen times with suit jackets, button down shirts, chinos, etc. All in all, he's probably altered close to two dozen items of clothing for me. He has nailed it on every item, and in the one instance where the hem was slightly too short, I brought it back within a week and no questions asked he redid the hem without charge (as his posted policy states he would do). And he has said multiple times to me that if the tailoring needs adjusted, bring it back in. Also for multiple items of clothing that I thought needed some tweaks, he would look at it on me and study it for a few moments and say, no, it doesn't need tailored and not to alter it. (He did the same for several items of clothing for my wife as well.) On one occasion I forgot my ticket and it was no problem finding the items in his lineup. So if you're at all worried about the potential language barrier or the possibility of items getting lost, I would say both of those are small or negligible concerns relative to the likelihood of having a wonderful tailoring experience with Mr. Chun. I took a chance with this tailor since at least some reviews were positive and the store is conveniently located near my workplace. But the most recent Yelp review was poor. So as a test I only brought one low-priced suit jacket to get altered. I knew the sleeves were long and there was some bunching up in the back near the armpits. I put on the jacket and he noticed the sleeves were long. He marked them to alter them shorter. I then asked, "How does the back look?" He replied fine. That did not install confidence in me. But I thought to myself "I'm already here. I'll have him shorten the sleeves and I'll just go to another tailor for the rest." A week later I returned and tried on the jacket in the store. It was as if he didn't even perform the alteration. I said, "The sleeves are too long." He replied, "Your shirt is too short." Nearly every one of my shirts are actually TOO LONG. Most off-the-rack shirts I buy are 33 inches. But my actual shirt arm length is 32 inches. The shirt I was wearing on that day had 33-inch arms. His inability to admit he made a mistake was galling. Awhile back, I had a volunteer gig helping to run a fairly big-deal fundraiser, and finally had to buy a professional looking suit. Since I could basically use a fundraiser myself, getting a good looking suit for cheap was really important. I found a decent choice at Daffy's for about $200, but it looked exactly like how much I paid for it. I took the suit over to Royal Tailor to see if anything could be done to make it a little more professional looking. When I walked in, there was a guy in the corner furiously sewing away, and a man behind the counter looking over receipts or something. As soon as I walked in, he looked at the suit, nodded, and pointed me over to the "dressing area." Without really any conversation at all (seriously, almost no words were exchanged, which i found worrisome at first) he held up my jacket and helped me slide it on. In an instant he was pinning things and pulling things and after about 30 seconds, asked me what I thought about his suggested sleeve length. It was perfect. All of it. Exactly what I was looking for, and didn't have to say a word. I was amazed. When it came to the pants, it was just a quick discussion of cuffs versus not, and a tangent on amounts of break, but in this case as well he pretty much just told me what looked best on me and I agreed. I picked up my suit three days later, payed what I consider an incredibly reasonable amount for the work (you can probably find cheaper, but not much, and definitely not maintaining the quality level) and three hours later was at my event. All night long, people with a LOT more money than me kept stopping me to tell me my suit looked amazing and asking me what label it was. I was a little embarrassed to admit that it was a cheap suit from Daffys, so I relied on the half truth of "it was custom tailored" which seemed equally impressive to these people. I highly recommend this shop to anyone looking to improve their appearance. They can do wonders with cheap materials (I also believe they can make custom suits but I have no experience there) and know enough about their craft to tell you exactly what will look best on you. It HURTS me to give Royal Custom only three stars when the work they did on my dress was phenomenal. I received a dress from an online seller two weeks before a wedding and realized that it was too small and desperately needed to be let out. They helped me. The dress looks great, and they were fast. So why only three stars? That is because I was told to expect my dress on one day, I called the day after, and it was only ready two days after the day I was told to expect it. So don't expect the delivery date to really mean much. I feel that because of this I cannot fairly rate Royal Custom higher than three stars. The ironic thing is that if they had just given me the actual delivery date in the first place, I would have definitely given them four stars since it was still super, super fast. But will I be taking all of my tailoring jobs to them in the future? Heck yes. read more

Not sure if their rates are reasonable. They altered the hem on my bridesmaid dress which shouldn't be that expensive and it cost me $35 WITHOUT getting the dress pressed and steamed (I also think that they're unable to press or steam because it seems to be strictly tailoring). However, they can do it for you QUICKLY which is a +++ over all the other places I called. So the owner and all the tailors who I interacted with are very nice and professional. The hemmed the dress properly. Knocking down a star because to charge $35 and take only cash seems pretty ridiculous. read more

These guys worked magic on two articles of clothing I recently purchased that were a tad bit large. The pants are still a bit large, but that's my own fault - they'll be just fine for work. The dress, in particular, had an incredibly difficult hem. Despite that, they took it in and hemmed away to perfection. Seriously, I could not believe it when I saw the results. Upon reading the other reviews on yelp, I was anxious to have this tailor add the lining and crinoline back into my beloved 50's vintage dress. Just as the reviews suggested, I told the tailor I needed it a week prior to the party where I planned on wearing it. My initial encounter was frustrating to say the least. There was a HUGE language barrier. I was describing what I wanted to the tailor and he was repeating back something completely different. I finally left, hoping he had at least a mild understanding of my request. I went back to pick my dress up and, as I had feared, he had not understood my request. I then tried to explain again and after about 15 minutes of very cyclical conversation, he understood why I was not satisfied with my dress and told me it would be double the original price to get what I wanted. It took another 3 trips back for it to actually be ready and what I had originally asked for. I will never go back here again. read more

This place has great pricing, solid work, and very nice owners. When the owner has sometimes not done work to my satisfaction, he has always taken the clothes back and further adjusted them (sometimes 3 times) for free. Of course, I don't expect him to always get my fit right since I've only been a few times. A piece might need a couple of tailoring sessions to get exactly right. He has done everything from dress pants to corduroy blazers to 3/4 length winter jackets that required 5 inches off the back. The only negative aspect of my experiences here is echoed in the other comments: the shopowner sometimes does not have things ready by the agreed upon date. I would call in with your ticket number to make sure things are ready before you head over. read more

Unfortunately I got my bridesmaids dress in a 6 (long story) and I normally wear a 0-2- needless to say it needed to be taken in ALOT and hemmed ALOT. After a very thorough review of every single tailor in CC, considering mostly the expected cost and satisfaction of people who had dresses tailored, I decided on Royal Custom Tailor. The couple who owns it is sooo sweet, and the husband who does the alterations does excellent work. Okay, changing behind the "drape" is a little weird...but I'm not too worried about it there's no way that man is any kind of creep. He makes you feel very comfortable during the fitting, but maybe he should consider getting a thicker drape. He did a great job completely reconstructing my dress for $90 (it has three layers and is silky/chiffon) and had it done in a week. I'm really glad I chose their services and would go back if I needed to. It is cash only and he likes you to leave a small cash deposit (maybe half of your quote or something)..I only had 20 bucks on me when I dropped it off and he said that was fine :) read more

The people who own this place are nice, but definitely call ahead to make sure your stuff's ready before you go in to pick it up. Luckily, I called before making the 50-minute trek into center city, and he obviously hadn't even looked at the dress I'd left there the previous week. He said he'd have it done in two hours though, and it was. The quality of the work was very good, and prices were reasonable enough: $25 to get a dress taken in. My main complaint is that the dress is still too loose. I think the guy is pretty old-fashioned and I probably reminded him of his daughter or something, because while he was fitting me he convinced me that "too tight no good". I trusted his judgment, him being a tailor and all, but now that I've tried it on post-tailoring I realize that the dress is made of the kind of material that should be form-fitting, and a good tailor should probably know that. Stretch satin just doesn't look good baggy in places, so I guess I'll have to take it somewhere else to get it taken in even more. read more

$25 to take in straps sounded reasonable - until I found out that my sister altered the exact same dress (bridesmaids) for less. She got the straps done, the hem shortened, pressed and steamed for $20. They also lost the eye for the hook and eye on at the top of the zipper - which they were not adjusting. They replaced the .01 cent eye, obviously, but not before trying to convince me it was never there. Oh well, on to the next tailor. P.S. Cash only. Get with the times. read more

I needed the dress hem fixed and he suggested a few other alterations (which I'm so happy I went with since the dress looks great!). Few things to know.... Weekdays he realistically opens at 9am (maybe 8:45). It's cash only and deposit (of whatever you feel) is asked up front. Wasn't the cheapest place but I'm not that knowledgable on the going rate (I just needed it done properly). Other Yelpers claim their stuff wasn't done on time... Mine was done early (I called). I used Royal Custom Tailor per Yelp's recommendations. I read the reviews and decided to go. I would definitely recommend GOING EARLIER than you think you need your item. I needed to have a silk dress altered for a wedding. I took it to other tailors in the city and they refused to even attempt to fix it. The owner measured me and at the time I felt he wasn't measuring exactly enough but I was wrong. I told them two weeks and when I called to see if it was complete they did not know my reference number on my slip (keep your slip) and couldn't find the dress. I went down to the shop and immediately spotted my dress hanging - pins still in place. The shop closed in 15 minutes and they told me to come back then. Despite my fears I did as they said and sure enough it was complete when I returned. It was done beautifully. I would never have known they did it that fast. I've used them multiple times since then for alterations and highly recommend them. read more

Its not the cheapest place in town, its not the quickest or best customer service, but this is the best tailor I've found in my life. I took all my grandfather's suits and now they all fit like a glove. One suit he completely removed the arms in order to take the shoulders in and you could never tell that it wasn't custom made. I've used this tailor twice again since my first venture into clothing alterations and I have to say, I think I'm getting addicted to tailoring, especially for nice pieces. Very proud of making my New Year's Resolution of losing 20 pounds, I brought them a pair of pants to get taken in and they were completed perfectly and promptly. The damage for that was around $20 or so, and they did an excellent job. Just this past week I brought in my nicest blue skirt suit that I need to wear next week. My boyfriend bought it for me as a gift during my last job search so it has a lot of sentimental value, but it's gotten a bit too big and I was very afraid of alterations not working out. The gentleman who runs the shop nipped it in with pins in three places- skirt, sleeves, and sides of the jacket. The bill surprised me somewhat, it was $88 for the alterations with half due upfront, but the suit is fully lined, worth well over double that amount, and I wanted it to look right so I shrugged it off. I'm glad I did. When I went to pick up at the designated time, a week after bringing it in, they were just finishing it up and I was told I could wait a bit if I wanted, but I said "don't rush, take your time," and went back in the next day to pick it up. Trying it on was everything I hoped it would be and more. The skirt was ingeniously seamed so that the lines still fall properly (accentuating a slight booty curve without being too snug) and the jacket fits like a dream. My boyfriend gave it two thumbs up and I will feel so polished at the conference I'm attending next week. Couldn't be happier with this place! I once showed up with a button coming off my coat (I didn't notice), and he had it fixed up for me in seconds. And why was I there? To get my pants hemmed! The gentleman that owns the place is extremely professional and nice. I was whisked into the changing room to try on my new suit and he took the appropriate measurements and asked me when I need it by. I told him before july and he said to come back in a week. I came back and he looked around the store and couldn't find my suit. Luckily it was sitting right in front of me on a rack, untouched from the week before. He told me that I coudl come back at 3 to get it, but I told him not to rush and picked it up the next day. He does good work, but it concerns me that it wasn't read, or even worked on at all at the agreed upon time. This was my first time at a tailor so maybe this is just how tailors roll? Following an experience I had at Royal Custom Tailor (123 S Juniper St). The man who owns the shop is handsy and touched me in an inappropriate way while I was having a dress altered. I had to push his hands away and told him forcefully to stop. Then I caught him peeking through the dressing room curtains. Turns my stomach. I have been going to Royal Tailors for years - he hemmed my wedding dress. The best way to combat this type of behavior is to speak up and take action. The tailor who works here is very professional and friendly, and most importantly he did an amazing job! I took two suits in to be tailored. Asked when I needed them back, and I gave a date two weeks in the future. He had me try suits on and measured. I implored to him multiple, multiple times that I like my suit pants left a little long. He just kept remarking that they needed to be shortened. I re-iterated again that I like them left long. I left him with a check for 1/2 the total amount as a deposit. I've now moved to NYC, but stopped in on the agreed upon date to pick up my suits. Neither had been touched and were just hanging on the rack. He proceeds to tell me to come back that afternoon. I came back and only one suit was ready. While the jacket looked good and the pants were brought in, needless to say, he hemmed them too short. I told him I wanted a quarter inch back on those and the other pair. Had to have my gf (who still lives in philly) pick up the suits as I had to leave town earlier then he was able to promise to get them back. He winds up charging my gf the full amount (remember, I already gave him 1/2 the deposit). Now, my gf needs to go back to explain the situation to him, which isn't the easiest thing to do. He tells her he will check with his bank in the morning and that she should come back the next day. The next day, he says that he couldn't find proof that I'd already paid the 1/2 deposit. It wound up taking me sending my gf a copy of the cashed check with HIS signature to prove to him that he overcharged. He doesn't listen, he doesn't stick to timeline, and he's either dishonest or disorganized. Too frustrating for me to ever go back. read more

I ordered a custom gown from another retailer and the sizing came out all wrong. I was in a panic because I needed the gown for an event two days later. I was referred to Royal Custom and am happy I listened. I called in first and asked if they could tailor the dress within 24 hours; he very sweetly said, "come on in!" Originally, I was quoted $100 and was told would have to come back the next day for more fittings which I was happy to do considering I needed the dress to be perfect. I had the train shortened a few feet, the dress raised, and the chest/arms taken in. They did it all in three fittings for $120 cash only and he made sure I had the dress back before the end of the day. Considering the work that went into the gown and the seriously limited time frame I gave them, I feel like the price was reasonable. I've never really been happy with a tailor before, but this experience was smooth. He didn't want me leaving with the dress until it was perfect and it showed he really cares for his craft. read more

This sole proprietorship has been owned for decades by the same nice old man who does nothing but tailoring and alterations. He has fabric in his small store for custom suits. This is not a dry cleaner that offers alterations but a professional tailor and custom suit maker! I don't know of any others in the city. Good service, good work quality, and good price considering the Center City location (most places in the city are a RIP OFF).
