Ok work but be careful if you're taking your selvage denim here for tapering. I brought two pairs of new selvage denim jeans here to have the legs tapered. I explained I wanted to leave the selvage edge untouched and slimming should be done on the inside of the leg. I left confident that they understood. The sign said "the denim expert" after all. When I got the jeans home I realized both had been tapered along the outside selvage edge. This effectively spaced out the white lines way too much and looks dumb cuffed. I'll either have to wear them uncuffed , or get them hemmed now. Not *that* big of a deal, but these details matter to anyone buying pricey selvage denim. read more

I've had nothing but success due to their profound experience and ability to have a conversation with me regarding tailoring instead of just doing what I ask because a lot of times I may be wrong and their expertise says different actions would result in a better product for me. They are incredibly friendly and I believe you get a discount if you pay cash. When hemming my pants it's about $15. Their timeline for getting the product back to you is flexible but they usually ask if a week is okay. However if you insist they can get it done in 3-4 days. Found this place on Yelp after searching for a cleaners that had good reviews. This place had the most and best reviews and it seemed like their customers were loyal. Brought a jacket I thrifted here to get washed and when telling the guy I just needed it cleaned he informed me I would need to also get the buttons tightened or else they would fall off during the wash. It was only a few bucks extra for each button but I was happy to pay for it since he was right they did look and feel very loose. I was able to pick up my jacket a few days later whenever I was available and they did a fabulous job. My jacket looked brand new and the total was only around $50 which I think is pretty good for a city cleaner! read more

Tailor review: Simply put, if you need a "sure bet" for getting your item right the first time - don't think too hard, stop here. Anthony owns his craft, from age 7, which shows in his ability to understand what you're looking for. He may seem quick, however, it's because he is an expert. I came in to hem my 'slim' fit wedding trousers. I asked if he could slim them down further and in a matter of seconds a few clips here and there, he showed me exactly what I was looking for. The whole encounter was 10 minutes or less and a week later, I walked in, tried the item on, acknowledged how beautiful I looked, nodded my head, happily paid, and all of 5 minutes later I was on my way, with a smile on my face. I had a poem all ready to go to describe my experience. Then I realized that it was in the form of a Haiku. I was worried that people would think I was being racist so I redid it to fit the Sijo form. Only then did I remember that Sijo is Korean. So I opted to try for a Limerick, but had trouble rhyming with suit. Hoot? Moot? Fruit? Brute? What kind of nonsense poem would that make? Finally, I said screw it and decided to do one of those free verse things, which is really an excuse for lazy writing. Expert repairs on two suits, and a great job tailoring a third - all for a reasonable price. Not much more to say. I went in the week before I left for vacation to drop off two suits for cleaning/button repair. They repaired all the front-facing buttons on my two suits and cleaned/pressed for 30 bucks. Word up! I also dropped off a third jacket that I needed to have taken in. All I had to do was let the owner eye-ball the fit of one of my other jackets, and then he just had me put on my new one, placed a few pins, and two weeks later (wedding season, so it takes longer), I have a jacket that fits perfectly. To be fair, I always think I look good. But, when I picked up my suits, I fell into all sorts of new love for myself. Watch out, ladies. I've got the secret Konami code of ball-punching new-hotness. After the hems on a pair of slacks that I had done somewhere else came undone, I brought them (and a couple others to shorten) to be re-hemmed. It was fairly busy which is a always a good sign. The owners are extremely nice and actually know their regular customers' name. I just picked up the items I dropped off and the stitching is neat and well-done. CHECK ALL ITEMS BEFORE LEAVING I saw the bad reviews and have worked w the public all my life. I know there are complainers out there. I saw many good reviews too. I believe in small business and the positive. And also know people and businesses can have a bad day. I will NEVERRRRR return here. All three times were awful experiences. The first time I had stains on my shirt from a leak in my closet or something mysterious. The woman who took my clothing was basically harassing me saying it was coffee. I do not drink coffee. She then said 'what did you spill on yourself?' over and over with a condescending look. I told her repeatedly it wasn't food or drink and she rolled her eyes. The last piece of clothing had the stain on the top of the shoulder. She then believed me. The second time - a small tear in a jacket was sewn and looked horrific - all bunched up and a mess. When I looked at it and asked about it - I again was harassed, this time by the main tailor/owner(?). He was yelling at me saying I told you this and that. I never spoke to this man before. Only a woman. I have never been treated so poorly in any situation, but esp not by a business. He eventually 'credited' me for the sewing by taking off $ from the things I had dropped off in the same trip. My instinct was to take cash back (not that it was offered) and take my shirt back. I should have listened to that. I went to pick up the shirt today and it was not touched. Highly unprofessional. I do not need to be yelled at or harassed by someone who I am paying a service for. Very expensive tailoring. They did a great job on a bridesmaids dress but for seemingly simple tailoring of a skirt and blouse the cost was $120. I felt pressure to pay as they had already put in all the pins and I was in line but I really wish I had gone someplace else. Dropped off a sweater to be dry cleaned while I was there. This wasn't as expensive ($6) but they missed stains on the sleeves. Not sure why there's so many good reviews, may try again for simple dry cleaning. read more

I am new to the area and decided to take a pair of pants that needed shortening to Master Tailors. I was persuaded by the number of positive reviews, but I was very disappointed with the service. I tried on the pants for the tailor. She put one pin in the back of the leg. I was a bit concerned when I saw this because experienced tailors also pin the front or sides and ask the customer about their preference on where the pant breaks in front. A week later I picked up the pants. When I got home, I tried them on. To my dismay, they were much too long. I didn't think anything had been done. I returned to the shop and explained the problem to the tailor. She looked at the stitching and said they had been shortened. I tried them on and showed her that they were unwearable at this length. She repeated the poor pinning job she had done earlier and said there was no charge and the pants would be ready the next day. I waited 2 days to return. The pants were not ready. I waited for them to be done. While waiting, I noticed several signs posted. They said no alterations would be made after leaving the premises. Apparently what had happened to me was a common occurrence. I tried the pants on before I left. The floor of the dressing room was littered with open safety pins. I'm still looking for a good tailor in Philadelphia. Master Tailor isn't passable. I recommend you pass on this place as well. read more

I highly recommend this tailor for suit alterations. I needed to have the sleeves shortened on 7 new suit jackets and it was a challenging job because the suits had real, sewn-in button holes. My ideal sleeve length fell at a point right between 2 of the buttons. I've seen from past experience that this alteration can go very wrong if you don't go to a talented tailor. We talked about shortening the sleeve from the shoulder instead but it wasn't possible because the arm would be too tight, so I asked him to do his best with what he had. My suit jackets turned out amazingly well - much better than all of the other tailors I've gone to in the past for the same kind of work (a long list). He was careful to choose the best place between 2 button holes when shortening the sleeve to make it look as flawless as possible and he finished the edges off cleanly and professionally. Even up close the sleeve looks great, and the lining is finished so perfectly that I can roll the sleeves back if I want to. The price was reasonable, especially for the amount of work he did, and the entire order (7 jackets, a skirt and a pair of pants) was done in 2 weeks. read more

You know when you're in a relationship and things are going great for like a year but then you hit a rough patch and everything goes to hell? That sad tale is the story of me and my last dry cleaners. Things were going so well; it was an easy relationship, some shirts here, some pants there, maybe a suit or two. Then one day I went to pick up my suit that I needed pressed not cleaned and I find out a pen had exploded on it and I won't have it back for a few more days. Days turn to weeks and the drama snowballed. It's an awful story but that's not why we're here is it? After that ugly breakup I needed a new spot. Yelp guided me to MT&C which was right around the corner from my ex ironically. I'd been hurt before so I went with some reluctance and hesitation. I found a shirt I had worn out during a quasi-barcrawl with my two brothers. I'd pretty much written it off between the wing stain, taco stain, IPA stain, and Scotch spill but I figured I'd take it here and see what they're all about. The very nice lady there looked the shirt over with concern and told me she couldn't guarantee everything but she would give it her best shot. 2 days later the shirt was as good as new! Could this be something more than a random hookup?! Test 2. A few Thursdays ago I get a call for a follow up interview; they want me to come in that Friday. However the suit I really wanted to wear was covered in cat hair and had been worn once already so I needed to get it..... pressed. Friday morning I got there just as they opened and laid the suit out and explained the situation. It wasn't ideal but she said she would make it work. I go back 4 hours later, it's not only pressed, she had found a small stain on the wrist and had cleaned it off! Could you be looooved, the answer is yes. I think the moral here is that even when we've been hurt we must not let our hearts turn cold because you never know who's right around the corner waiting to give you the press you deserved all along. read more

I moved to Philadelphia a few months ago. One of the first things I did was to look for a good dry cleaning service. I chose this one based on the excellent yelp reviews. Big mistake. First of all, every time I went to the store, they looked annoyed with me asking to have my shirts back in 2 days. I find this to be quite standard, but apparently I was wrong. Then, after 5 times I had been there, they completely ruined one of my favorite shirts. They made a big hole in it. That can happen, I guess. What I found obnoxious is that they were accusing me, in front of other customers, to have brought a ruined shirt to the store. They told me that I was not a regular customer, even if I had already spent almost $100 in the store! Finally, they started claiming that they haven't even touched the shirt. I then pointed out that the shirt had the little tag that they use to identify them. At that point he started saying that, yes, they touched the shirt, but they didn't clean it when they realized that it was ruined. I then asked for some sort of compensation. This is when the clerk started saying that he was going to call the police! At that point I did not even know what to say. Maybe I should have encouraged him to call the police. End of the story: They didn't offer any refund and they were extremely rude. I cannot understand who would write such good reviews about them... read more

Master of Disappointment: Do not go here. Today, I traveled to Master Tailor to have a suit tailored for a wedding on August 30th. I'm in the wedding party and I wanted the suit to look great (in addition to the suit being expensive). Unfortunately, the suit was too large for me as ordered and I was unable to get a different size. However, this was--at best--a medium difficulty job of tightening the lower back to fit the narrowing from my shoulders to my hips. Then, the arms needed to be shortened by 1/2 inch. At first, everyone was very nice. I had brought my dry cleaning there as well because the reviews for this place were great (and it is close to my house). Thereafter, once I tried on the suit for the Tailor, he began complaining about the amount of work that he'd have to do on the suit. Objectively, there was not that much work to do. I told him that it was for a wedding and that I could not simply go get another size. He literally scoffed at me and told me that the suit didn't fit me. I told him that I would pay for his time, and that the cost for quality work was worth it to me. Seriously, I was ready to spend up to $300 without blinking. Again, he told me the suit would not fit me right and uttered that it would be too much work. Again, I asked for clarification regarding whether he could do it for extra money and/or whether he wouldn't do it at all. He then went to his seat and took a phone call and ignored me. Keep in mind that there was no one in the store, that I had brought ten (10) articles of dry cleaning, and I had another suit coat to be tailored. Without any specific comments/guidance, the lady behind the counter gathered all of my dry cleaning and put it in a paper grocery bag and gave it to me. Then, silence. So, I grabbed my stuff, told the Tailor that I thought his behavior was unprofessional, and I left the store. Please note that I called ahead and was told to come without an appointment. Listen, I am a friendly Wisconsinite who makes eye contact with people and greets them respectfully. I did not do and/or say anything to this Tailor to deserve this treatment. I would not send my worst enemy to this business...ever. My understanding, upon reflection, was that he saw my business as not worth his time (assuming he is not generally a nasty person). I have heard other things about him including that he prefers simple/minor alterations and accompanying volume over more complicated alterations for which he isn't suited. Either way, the experience was terrible. Please be guided accordingly. read more

I recently brought 4 items here: cashmere sweater (which I only wore once previously), a pleated skirt, a pleated dress, and a dress that needed a small seam stitched. The total was $45 which I thought was a bit pricey. The pleated skirt and dress came back looking NOT pleated. They actually ironed the dress flat. WTF?! I am also sitting here angrily writing this review because I am wearing my cashmere sweater that I just had dry cleaned and am noticing that there is a GIANT hole in the back. Big fan of Master Tailor. I usually get my jeans hemmed here and they do a great job keeping my original hem so it looks like it was bought that way. On the expensive side, but definitely worth it. I haven't gotten much else done, but my boyfriend has gotten his suits and topcoat tailored here and he is usually pleasantly surprised by their work. I really like the owner too. Very friendly if you are. Also very honest about what he thinks will work. They also have a cute shih tzu hanging out around the shop. read more

They do a pretty good job but are very expensive. I have seen a slight drop in quality since the business was transferred to their nephew (??) I have had double creases and my washed shirts aren't ironed as well. When I asked about this, they explained that they put them through a machine to process them, so my guess is that Mr. Lee and his wife touched them up- while the new owner does not. I am picky- and they are so expensive that I will probably look for a new cleaners Update- I have had to return items twice now that there's no way should have been sent out.. not well ironed... inconvenient and unacceptable. How is it that it is ALWAYS impossibly hard to find a good cleaners & tailor? Does this line of work come with a radar that attracts mediocre talent and lack of care for your work or your customers? It has always seemed so to me. Before I found the Master Tailor in Philly alone I went through 3 different cleaners that messed up my clothes (I literally had to throw stuff out, it was so ruined). This has been an unfortunate theme to my search for a quality cleaner & tailor. Alas, I was enlightened when I found the Master Tailor & Cleaners. This place is as good as it gets, hands down. And it's obviously not a secret! The sweet couple that own it do stellar work and are genuine and honest about what they do. Since I found "the one" I've had a number of experiences there with both cleaning & tailoring. There is something to say about honesty in any business, and it's really refreshing to hear it from a business owner who could just as easily lie to make the extra bucks. I've always gotten honesty from both of the owners: they have told me when I should probably ditch a clothing item rather than spending gratuitous amounts for an attempt to fix or clean something that may not turn out great. They've helped fix my clothes that were poorly tailored by another one of my arch nemesis tailors. I've brought my (very few) expensive/nice pieces of clothing there and trusted them fully. An anecdote to share that has only solidified my love affair with this place: While walking home from a late night out in Center City (by late I mean about midnight), the man who owns the place and does the tailoring was STILL THERE in the window at his sewing machine. I was excited to use this place, after seeing the generally positive reviews on Yelp and the PhillyMag recognition (not sure that really means anything), but I must warn people to STAY AWAY from this place. I had 12 dress shirts dry cleaned and seven of them came back with new stains, four black stains in the same general spot on the left sleeve. These stains were not on the shirts when I dropped them off and the clothes are now ruined unless wearing a sweater to cover up the huge blemishes. I called them today to discuss the issue and was told it was immediately my fault. I tried to explain three different times the situation on the call and only was told to "not call back" and "they didn't need any more customers." I plan to stop by in person tomorrow to demand a refund, but that won't even come close to covering the cost of the clothes. Very frustrated and the person on the phone was a first-class jerk. read more

Had a great first experience here. I needed to get some darts for a shirt before a work event, and they were able to complete it in about two days. Wonderful tailors! I can't speak to their dry cleaning prowess, but I took two pairs of pants in on a Thursday afternoon and picked them up on a Tuesday, with perfect hems and at only $12 a pop. Now, considering that they originally quoted me a two-week turnaround, I am impressed. The store is nice, and the lovely Korean couple running the place are just so friendly. One thing, they do have a touch of that typical Korean bluntness...having lived in Korea, I wasn't fazed, but it might be a little jarring to have the tailor tell you how tight your pants are and that maybe you're just too big for them. Having done the litmus test with a couple pairs of pants, I plan to drop off a huge bundle of old clothes that need some touching up. You know, that one old sweater that you'll keep having stitched up forever rather than buying a new one because it's just that good. I'd trust such treasures at this place. read more

I tried on my suit that I had'nt worn in 3 years and realized it was too small and I needed to wear it for an interview in two weeks! I had almost given up hope and thought I would need to by another suit when I found this amazing place. The owner/tailor created a miracle. He later explained to me everything he did, which was way above and beyond what he had planned to do with my suit when I first came to him with my problem. Two of my dry cleaners decided to close so I came to Yelp with hopes of finding a good go-to dry cleaner. Yelp was correct in that they do a great job, but is definitely on the expensive side. I am a messy person in life so I brought in several blouses/dresses with lipstick, beer, oil, blood, sweat, tears, and more, on them. I figured many of the stains would come out halfway because they weren't fresh, but literally all the stains came out 100%! Veryy happy about this!! Two items were in pretty bad shape when I gave them to her and she was honest and said that it would be pricey to fix them and asked if I thought it was worth it. I really appreciated that she looked into it, quoted me, and left it up to me. The stained silk blouses cost me about $7 I believe. Again, this is on the expensive side even for Rittenhouse area, but I'll return. read more

Work here can be expensive (to hem the sleeves on a sport coat and bring in the waist I was charged $80, and about $110 for a whole suit), but I think the tailor does good work. I had 2 sport coats, and 3 suits done here. The dry cleaning process is pretty expensive though. A regular shirt without any stains will run $5.60, which appears to be twice the price of neighboring cleaners. $20 for dry cleaning my wool peacoat. Alternations are a little on the slow side. Expect 2-3 weeks, but when he says he will have it done by that date, he does! Tailor is nice and chatty, but one issue is that I think a good tailor should make suggestions on what looks good. He doesn't offer any suggestions. I forgot to mention when I was getting my suit pants hemmed to slim them down a bit. He didn't suggest it either, even though I had the top slimmed in. So now I have a slim fit upper and baggy pants... :/ read more
