After having just relocated from the California Bay Area, I was happy to see a local Indian restaurant. Back in Berkeley I experienced extraordinary Indian cuisine at Vik's and Ajanta restaurants and am always hoping newer discoveries would come close. Unfortunately it was not the case the other evening at Bountiful's Royal India. It's very accommodating for families and is quite clean. I ordered the vegetable samosas, the Chicken Tikka Masala and a sweet lassi. The staff is very attentive and I got my lassi promptly. The consistency was good but was overkill on the rose water. OMG it was like drinking rose perfume. A lighter touch on the rose water is definitely needed: chef please take note! The samosas arrived and they were excellent and were accompanied by two wonderful chutneys. The chicken arrived with rice. It was the WORST Chicken Tikka Masala I'VE EVER TASTED. Even Trader Joe's frozen version is far better by comparison. I've had many tikka masalas at various Indian restaurants over the years and this was the worst EVER. For flavors and spicing it was as if the chef introduced some bizarre quasi-Mexican spices into the mix but had a dreadful taste. Usually Tikka Masala has piquant ginger and seductive garlic and other spices but these were not evident. And even the chicken (was it marinated at all?) was hard and not succulent. Also the chicken had an "old" taste. Seriously, I was worried about food poisoning (but I'm fine). Since Royal India is in my neighborhood I might go back and order a mango lassi next time and one of the lamb dishes. Their samosas are excellent and worth the visit. Chef, I know each Indian family has their unique take on spice combinations but a review of the spicing is definitely needed. read more

I like Indian food quite a bit so I've eaten it a lot. I think sometimes restaurants that serve food from other countries of origin are marked down because the reviewer doesn't care for the type of food. This is not the case here. Royal India has good food, but not great. Some of their dishes are better than others. The Tikka Masala and Kurma are both very good and these are a couple of popular foods for most people new to Indian food. Their Tandori Chicken is okay, not great. Their Naan is good, not great. They serve Coke products for those that care (my wife won't eat in places that don't serve Diet Coke). The prices here are kind of high IMO and they don't take Amex which is a minor negative for me. The service isn't great. You can certainly find better Indian restaurants for less out of pocket in Salt Lake City. Under normal circumstances I'd probably only give Royal India three stars. So why do I give it four? Because Bountiful is severely lacking in restaurant diversity. Most restaurants here are either franchises or they are just crap, some are both (Panda Express). So this restaurant is a HUGE breath of fresh air in terms of the choices in the area. read more

The chicken curry is bland, and that is something I never thought I would say about any curry. But the Lamb Vindaloo was excellent, as was the naan and the vegetable Samosas we had as appetizers. The coconut lamb was so soft and came a part easily. The naan was like a piece of my grandmother's bread. I totally killed the bread. I love that they make each dish to order. Don't be afraid to order a bit spicier. Only open in evenings though 430pm-9pm. For sure coming back. read more

Great food and service. We called in advance and they set up table and high chair for us with with children waters ready to go. Trying to eat out with 4 kids is rough so this was a huge deal. I happened to drop in at this place while visiting Salt Lake City with my friends. Although, I reside in Bay Area and there are many good Indian restaurants, I was craving for some good Indian food and happen to catch this place. The food was delicious. The food is probably one of my favorite Indian Restaurants. Numerous varieties to choose from. Vegetarian Friendly too. Service is good. Waiters are very attentive in filling your glass. Atmosphere is very low key and quite decorative. The chicken biryani and samosas was excellent. I also tasted the paneer masala ordered by my friend and it was very tasty. Great food. Service is good too. We've been going there for years. Love the Chicken Tikka Masala and Vegetable Masala. As we like varied spiciness we ask for a small dish of hot chutney to individually add "heat".The Naans are big and we prefer the plain ones. I loved the chicken curry dish that I ordered! I have been craving that and the naan bread ever since! I thought it was great quality too. Sometimes chicken can be with dark meat and the dish I ordered had only light meet which i prefer. I cant remember what it was called but it was mild like I wanted and it was really good. read more

I was referred by a colleague who said it's worth driving out of the city for this and I am glad we did. This is excellent Indian cuisine. Every just tastes fresh! I could distinctly taste each ingredient and also savor the blending of flavors. Nothing was over-seasoned or boringly bland. The "chef special" Lamb Rojan Josh was terrific. My wife's Chicken Tikka Marsala was equally delicious. The Naan was excellent too -- we had both the onion and butter Naan. I recommend the appetizer sampler to start. The portions are generous. I highly DO NOT recommend this place. I recently had dinner with my friend and had an awful experience. We were hoping to have a nice evening with good food and good company. However that was not the case. We had ordered our food and asked for no green peppers in our food. However when they brought it out, it had green peppers. The waitress told us they would remake it. This has happened a number of times and so we asked to speak to the manager. Cory came to the table and was plain out rude and disrespectful. He spoke down to my friend, cut him up and even walked off while my friend was talking to him. Cory then came back to the table and my friend told him he didn't appreciate how he was talking to him. Cory then told my friend we could go somewhere else and not come back. 3 minutes later another man complained about his food being bland. However Cory stood there listening and apologized and comped his meal. He then continued to apologize and even gave him a coupon for a free meal to come in again. 3 of the other workers also went up to this man and apologized. One of those same workers came to our table asking if we wanted togo boxes even though we hadn't touched our food. I understand that things happen and food comes out wrong. However the food is NOT the issue I am having with this restaurant. The issue is DISCRIMINATION. If my black friend was a white male like Cory and like the other customer, he would not have be treated this way. Racism happens all around us and should not be tolerated. I proceeded to call the owner Emmanuel and told him of our experience. He apologized and stated he would look into it and call me back. I have yet to hear back from him even though I have called him multiple times. I will never go to this restaurant again. read more

Food was wonderful, service was horrifying!! We will never return. Came in on Friday evening at 8:00 it took nearly 15 minutes for someone to take our order. We ordered an appetizer and 2 entrees our appetizer came out and one bite into our appetizer our entrees were brought out, basically to sit and get cold while we rushed to finish our app. Half way through our dinner Shauna the owner dropped our check and brought us boxes. I asked if I could order a dessert and was promptly asked if I'd like it to go when I declined considering it was my birthday dinner.....I overheard the owner groan and sigh tell our server that I wanted it to stay. I looked at the time 9:04 they had closed just 4 minutes before. I have worked in the restaurant industry serving or managing for over 10 years, I have never been treated so poorly. A little advice Shauna your customers keep you in business and you lead by example. You need to take a long hard look at your customer service skills and attitude because your product is amazing. I will never be back please take this review as an opportunity to improve your skills. read more

Ordered takeout and was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. I Arrived on time to pick it up and was told it wasn't quite ready. That wasn't a big deal until 30 more minutes passed and three tables who were seated AFTER I arrived were served their meals. When I inquired about it the hostess told me they always serve dine-in customers before takeout which was infuriating. I waited for more than an hour total with no apology. If the food was good I would have let it go but it was the worst Indian food I have ever had. We eat Indian food at least once a month and recommend Bombay house or Kathmandu in Salt Lake. read more

We recently moved to Bountiful and came across this restaurant during a walk down Main Street. We loved it! The food is great, but it was the service that really stood out to me. The host was so friendly and came to chat with us for a bit and welcome us to the neighborhood. It's a great atmosphere and convenient location for when we want to dine out, and they also offer take out for when we would rather eat at home. I definitely recommend this place! read more

It's certainly much more an indictment of the locals than of the restaurant, because this place is awesome!! The service is always prompt and professional, the menu is tight and traditional, and the dishes are all executed with authentic perfection. Royal India would be number 3 on my list of good India food in the area. (Best is Taste of India, then Bombay House, then Royal India, then Himalayan kitchen and Bombay Grill in Ogden). Their service has always been pretty good. The location is just okay, the bathrooms are horribly small. I'm 5'5", 125 lbs and the bathroom stall was difficult to maneuver into. Who makes stalls that small? Anyway, the food is pretty good, still better than what I can make at home, but lacking some complexities that other restaurants have mastered. The dishes seem be slightly more tomato heavy than other restaurants' dishes of the same name. I have always enjoyed their Lamb Rogan Josh. Their naan is good (garlic naan) - soft, crispy on edges, and flavorful. If you are okay with fried chicken, their mango chicken curry is different and very good. Other good choices would be Butter Chicken (Murgh Makhni) or Chicken/Lamb Kurma/Korma. Yes, they serve no beer, hubby doesn't like that fact. A good IPA with 'I' food is where it's at. Prices are comparable any other Indian restaurant in the area ($12-14/curry dish). read more

The food is always good, but tonight I had an unpleasant experience with a tall girl with short red hair at the Bountiful location. I came in to pick up my to go order asked if I could pay with American Express, and she told me I could not. I just checked, and their website says I can. Is this only for online orders? Since I was told I could not use my American Express gift card I asked if the cash discount was offered so I could pay with cash. She looked at me and said, "I don't know what you're talking about, ma'am." She had very abrupt answers for my questions and kept calling me ma'am. She acted like she was checking the computer and told me the cash discount was taken away 3 months ago. I was also really grossed out by the pet fur on her clothing and hope she didn't handle my food. She was very abrasive and could probably benefit from additional training on payment methods and how to address customers in a polite manor. When I got home my husband reminded me that the last time we ordered take out (which was less than 3 months ago, I live in the building across the street) I paid with American Express. I'm a by baffled, as I have always had a great experience when visiting both the Bountiful and Sandy locations. The customer service was a bit disappointing tonight. read more

Our group was excited to eat here, but we were disappointed. Although we arrived at 6:30 and it was not busy, the service was poor and we had to ask several times for items that were forgotten. They ran out of pineapple juice and the vegetable fritters, so brought out reduced portions. None of the six different dishes we tried was anything special and I didn't find the exquisite complexity of tastes that should be a hallmark of well-prepared Indian cuisine. I was told they only open for dinner because they spend all day cooking, but our meal didn't reflect that. read more
