First time at Royal India. We Got seated and as hungry as I was, I wanted some appetizers right away. My reason for 3 stars was the SERVICE. Waiter comes in, I placed order for Keema samosa (ground beef appetizer). He then makes a recommendation for another appetizer. I asked what it was and his answer was "just try it". I was willing to try it but needed to know a little more about it. Idk why he hesitated on giving more details, but he kept insisting "Just try it". My main concern here was allergies. You can't just push a dish to a customer and give them little to no information, especially if it comes to dietary and/or food allergy restrictions. Either way, went with his suggestion but I insisted on getting the samosas that I initially wanted. A little while after he comes back trying to take our order while placing a few sauces on the table so I asked to get the appetizers first. He leaves and finally brings back his suggestion of appetizer DAHI BHALLA. I can't say I know exactly what's in it. It is a mix of pieces of bread, potato (maybe), lots of yogurt, pomegranate, crunchy topping, and spices. It was slightly sweet, so to me I see it more as a dessert than appetizer tbh. The KEEMA SAMOSAS (ground beef) were really good. We ordered MILD LAMB CURRY with MUSHROOMS, RICE, and GOAT CURRY (MEDIUM). The food was good. Our server disappeared for a while. We never got asked how the food was. We wanted more rice, we asked him for some, he kept going to other tables and completely forgot about our rice. I had to get his attention after he past us by for at least 4 times without even looking. When we were done, we asked for to go box. It was the same thing. Another table asked for a box later than we did, and yet got taken care much sooner than us. I had to reach out to a waiter from across the restaurant to get our box and the bill. Overall, I think 3 stars is fair. They weren't crazy busy and they had at least 3 servers. Maybe our waiter was just having a bad day, idk, but there is room for improvement. read more

Ambiance is more like a bar. Dim lighting with weird wall decors. That said my main issue - food is horrible. Special Tea arrived with sugar and was more of sugar syrup. Paratha was full of salt. Briyani was rice mixed with turmeric (uncooked chicken). We didn't want to offend the staff so packed jt for Togo after making a few attempts to eat at the restaurant, and without giving second thought trashed it as it was not feasible for human consumption. Located in West Reno on Keystone, Royal India has been around since 2018 and I hadn't taken the opportunity to visit them or write a review. I have tried other Indian restaurants in this town and this has been on my list for awhile now. Upon arriving I was seated right away and dove into the menu, really ready to make it a Vegetarian meal. I enjoy doing this sometimes. Sitting in the dining room I noticed how dark the room was, which I suppose made it feel cozy. I chose an appetizer and soup to begin. I ordered the Vegetable Pakora and Dal Soup. Both were flavorful and really good. The Pakora is fried in chick pea batter which gives it a nice flavor rather than just being breaded in regular flour. The meal was also accompanied by a tamarind sauce and onion and Mint chutneys which I enjoyed very much. I sat and devoured the pakora and still had enough to take home for later. For my Entree I went with the Butter Paneer Masala . The dish consists of cheese cubes which are made from cottage cheese and are similar to Ricotta. The tomato butter sauce is so good and I ordered it on the spicier side. It was delicious. It came with a huge boat of jasmine rice, ( enough for 3 people ). I also wanted Naan, garlic Naan for $3.99 , pricey for bread , but was good and dipping it in the tomato sauce and topping some bites with the chutneys was really a necessity with the meal. One thing I noticed about the dining room is that it needed repainting, a lot of scuff marks on the walls. The restaurant definitely needs some freshening up and brightening up too. I notice things like this, but the place seemed clean. I was happy dining here though and was happy to have tried it out. I would recommend it as one of the better Indian restaurants, but I still have a favorite that I frequent that is closer to my home. Oh, forgetting I ordered a Taj Mahal beer, large... apparently the only Indian beer they offer. And incidentally they have a drink menu with specialty cocktails that sounded really good, maybe next time! read more

The saag paneer is so silky, creamy and buttery that I thought I was taking a bite of a plate for a king. The paneer is thickly sliced and very fresh, obviously this place cooks with passion! I would take my boyfriend's Indian parents here to impress them. I highly recommend this place! read more

My experience was terrible. As our family decided on dinner after driving all day, it was recommended to us to eat here. We go on website to see if open, yes. Go to restaurant, hours say open. It is 3:40. The doors are locked. We call and they say, open at 4pm. Let me say this, if you open at 4pm, fix your website and door to correct hours of operation and don't waste our time! I love me some good Indian food so I wanted to try a new place I haven't been to yet. When I went, there were no other customers so it was nice and quiet. Our server was friendly and our food came out in a timely fashion. For appetizer, got the Keema Samosa with is filled with meat. It came with 3 sauces which complimented it nicely. For my entry, I had Butter Chicken, Panner Naan, and Mango Lassi. The Butter Chicken was good and the Mango Lassi was decent (not the best I've had) but the naan I was not a fan. My favorite is cheese naan which they don't have apparently so I branched out to try a different one but it's not for me. Overall it's a nice spot, not my favorite one in Reno but it's still a place I would recommend. read more

Unfortunately, the chicken in the tikka masala tasted very off. It was either old, or a mixture of something else. It had a very unpleasant taste. I ended up throwing it away. The top spot in town for Indian food, They're always quite nice and never are rude. Sadly they no longer have a buffet (I do hope it comes back one sunny day). We ordered chicken tikka masala, Rich, warm and filling, it costs 16 dolla'. And get their naan, it's perfect for dipping. I wiped my plate clean, tea I was sipping. Good things first: the chicken tikka masala was delicious, bathroom was clean. Customer service was severely lacking. We came in on a Sunday at 11 am, and were served by a gentleman. Our waiter did not welcome us, describe the food brought to the table, or refill our water. No receipt was immediately offered. The service was downright insulting. My new favorite Indian place in Reno! We got sat right away and needed some time to look over the extensive menu -- server was super attentive bringing us our drinks right away. Loved the Special Tea! Once we finally ordered the food came out really quickly and I appreciated how we were proactively offered extra rice. The paneer naan was incredible -- so light and airy and just the perfect complement to our food! I could see the kitchen busting out to-go orders too, so it seems like they have a good system in place. Everywhere generally says thank you or bye as you leave, but in chatting with our server I felt like he genuinely appreciated us being there, and that little interaction can really put a place over the top sometimes. This place you will immediately notice is much more patronized than some of the other Indian restaurants we dined at. Like all restaurants they also have different menu items. This was the only Indian restaurant that offered a meat filled samosa. We ordered the keema samosa(meat filled), our regular goat curry and something that caught my friend's eye a lamb curry with mushrooms. Our waiter kept pushing us to or something we never heard of, dahi bhalia, he couldn't describe it but kept pushing to order it, so we did to try. The dishes were served in good size bowls instead of the teeny tiny metal bowls/dishes like some of the other Indian restaurants and there was a lot more meat in the dishes. The samosa was different reminiscent of one that I've had from tj, I prefer the tj version because the seasoning is more pronounced. Nothing special but good and different. The lamb curry with mushrooms was a hit for my wonderful dining partner, this is the first time I saw her eat with a passion, she actually put rice in the bowl and cleaned it up, it was that good, wow, I was impressed she had it in her, bravo. The goat curry was good and equally finished up by me, but I usually don't leave stones unturned so I followed in her footsteps and put rice in the bowl a finished it up not to be outdone by her, it was that good. We discussed that if we could combine our favorites from each of the favorites from all the Indian restaurants we've tried, it would be fantastic, there were some that were outstanding in certain dishes and flat on some of their other dishes, oh well we'll just have to order accordingly to the dishes we prefer at the Indian restaurants. The suggested dish of dahi bhalia was a vegetarian dish, a bit sweet with what I could describe as a bread soaked in yoghurt and pomegranate seeds on top, definitely not to our tastes, at least we know now to not take suggestions while dining in Indian restaurants, much the opposite when dining in real Chinese restaurants. This restaurant directions given by google was much more complicated than it should have been, a much simpler route could have been achieved had one simply read a map, lol what's a map. We will be coming back but at least we know what we prefer now. read more

Best Indian food in Reno hands down. Love the chicken tikka masala and chicken tikka saag!

The restaurant opens at 4:00 p.m. there are about 20 tables and a bar. We were seated immediately as we got there right at opening. The waiter took our order promptly but it was about a half hour wait for the food. We got chicken tenders for the young child with us and they were tasty and hot and served first. The food was served at the same time as the naan bread. The garlic naan bread is very light and tasty. The butter chicken melted in your mouth. The tiki masala was very good and the spices were prominent. The rice was maybe the best I've ever had so fluffy not one grain stuck to another. The entire meal with tip was $58. We had water for our drink. The beers are about $5. the wine starts at $9.00 and up from there they do have a full drink menu read more

This is an update based on the buffet still being closed due to Covid. If you only eat buffet and are missing it like us I have good news. On the back of the menu they have DINNER SPECIALTIES. WE ORDERED the vegetarian. We don't like rice so we ordered mixed vegetables instead. They allow two items to be changed. I forgot to take a picture of the appetizers which looked like 3 samosas and a fantastic thick potato pancake with mint chutney, a mixed onion thing and tamarind. All I thought I wanted was the Naan so I ordered an extra. But I ended up dipping into the plate too so I'll take the extra naan home. The cost ends up being about the same as 2 buffets so it's not a bargain but if you're not huge eaters it's enough for two to share. Especially with an extra naan. If you know the names of things then you could order off the menu. (:-) But having only eaten off the buffet...we like a variety. So this is a good substitute until the buffet returns. I love Indian Buffets. I love love loved Royal India buffet. Without a doubt it was the best indian buffet in town. I say was because I am writing this during the Covid Pandemic of 2020 and I am in mourning for the loss of this amazing option. But I was missing my Indian food fix and just had to go in for some lunch. We had had dinner at another Indian place closer to home and it just hadn't hit the spot like Royal does. I ordered up the Saag Paneer and was in heaven. I could eat this every single day. My wife My wife ordered the Biryani and it was great. And I ordered the beef Naan as an app. It was pretty darn good too. Service was good as always. Which can be hit and miss in some of the Indian places in town. But Royal is definitely the best place for service in the last 10 years. Parking here can be a little wonky because the parking lot isn't designed efficiently but it's still free and plentiful if not right at the door. read more

Stopped by here again one Sunday evening and ordered the saag choley and a fire naan. I mentioned before that they have a decent beer selection but I noticed they have a pretty well stocked bar too and I got myself a shot of Bulleit while I waited for my food. Talked the the very nice hostess for a little bit and I learned that the food they serve here is North Indian. I'm still trying to figure out the differences in regions but I know certain areas they eat less or no meat and some areas do more fish, etc. Anyway, saag choley is saag with chickpeas and a tomato cream sauce. I actually like this a lot more than the paneer style. The chickpeas add some nice texture and the addition of tomatoes adds a savory flavor to the dish. Probably my favorite version of this recipe I've had so far. Highly recommended if you like saag. Next time I'm going way off the beaten path and trying some fried fish or something. The only thing I didn't care that much for was the fire naan as its just naan with dry chili powder. That's pretty much what the menu description says though so I'm not going to dock a star for that. Wow. Decided to stop at Royal India for dinner. I love their chicken tikka masala, and since I wanted to kind of unwind I decided to tolerate the most uncomfortable bench seats in the city and eat there. Their staff has never been exactly warm and fuzzy, but they have (in the past) at least been polite. The entire staff treated me like they were doing *me* a favor by serving me, evidently at significant inconvenience to them. Then a young woman I have never seen working here before comes up to my table when I am barely 1/3 into my meal and asks if I want a box (??). I thank her but decline, she wordlessly walks away. Then, when I'm about 2/3 through my meal, she comes up with the card reader and asks "Are you ready to pay?" (??) I pointedly / irritatedly respond "When I am FINISHED WITH MY MEAL, yes." I still have a couple of bites left when she AGAIN comes by with the card reader with the same question. (???) Talk about a "Here's your hat, what's your hurry?" vibe. I should mention that there are at least two other tables who were seated after me and in the middle of their meals, the restaurant was still open another hour, and not particularly busy. So I said, again obviously irritated, "If you really need me to right now, I guess so." She responded "Yes." Not "Yes, please" just "Yes." So I took the reader, entered a custom tip of $1- on a $33- tab (to make sure that she understood that I did NOT just forget) and tendered payment. Enjoy your dollar. I'm not eating here again (though I might still do Door Dash / take out from them; their masala is VERY good). And I will leave when I am finished leisurely drinking my Taj Mahal, not before, thank you very much. read more

Sunday lunch with friends-- This place shares a parking lot with SaveMart and Honey Bakery so there's plenty of parking. We were greeted by the friendly staff and seated promptly. The restaurant is dimly lit, so I guess it's a good date place? We needed a friend to light the dishes for photos :P We ordered multiple dishes and everything was amaaaazing! The food here is amazing! I had the butter chicken and it was so creamy and delicious. The garlic nan was really good, you could really smell the garlic. I think Royal India was one of my first Yelp reviews and I gave it 5 stars then and nothing has changed. With the rising costs of EVERYTHING, somehow they have managed to barely raise their prices. Food is still high quality, as is service. We feel welcome on every visit, with the Royal India special still being our favorite. My kids are older so now we get to order more food to feed us all and we have never been disappointed with any order. read more
