We were excited to find an Indian place during our visit to Reno and that too a Bawarchi. We ordered Paneer Butter Masala with naan, Dosa and a Chicken Biryani. We were disappointed with the biryani. It was spicy but why black pepper? Not very tasty. Even the onions served on the side were from the non-edible part, the center. Fantastic food, fresh and savory and juicy. The mixed fried rice was on the Asian side of the menu and it was literally the best I've ever tasted, even among Thai/Chinese restaurants! This was at lunchtime during a weekday, and there were three other parties dining while we were there, as well as several takeout orders......and for some reason, only one person working as hostess/server/bus-person/cashier? She did her best, but not sure what they are thinking! Hope they have not had such a decline since they opened? Table was not the cleanest. The bathroom was in a long dark area covered by a curtain. We found this place called Bawarchi Indian Cuisine which was close to our hotel and enjoyed everything that we ordered. We ordered Chicken 555 which was suggested as an alternative to the appetizer that we wanted because the other item would have taken too long to prepare. I ordered the Chicken Manchurian which was extremely hot, I think it would have been tolerable had I known to order rice or naan with it. It immediately caused acid reflux, so be warned if you are sensitive to spicy food. My partner ordered the Chicken Sukka Dosa and loved it. I would have given this place 5-stars but they were out of samosas. The host apologized and mentioned that in his 20+ years he has never ran out of them before. I really wanted to love this place. I drive past it every day for work, and it always looks so pretty and festive. I love Indian food and typically go to the ones closer to my house near Midtown, but we decided to make the trip across town since we always talk about this restaurant but had never actually visited. While it looks very festive and inviting from the outside, the interior decor is nice but definitely outdated and in need of some upgrades. Upon arrival, we weren't offered menus and were expected to look at the selections on our phones via a QR code. Unfortunately, none of the items had pictures or descriptions, so we initially had to use Yelp to understand what the items were. When I asked for a menu, we were given one. The lady who sat and served us was very nice, but she seemed to be the only one working outside of the kitchen staff. We started with samosas, which seemed undercooked--they were white instead of golden brown, and the inside was only semi-warm, almost as if they had been cooked from frozen. I ordered tikka masala, which was good, but not great. The chicken was hard to eat is it had a lot of connective tissue left on it. My partner ordered an eggplant dish, though I can't remember the name. Altogether, the food was lacking. We noticed that they offer a lunch buffet, so I might go back to sample different dishes and see if there's something better to order next time. It's my mistake for assuming both Bawarchis in town will taste the same. This location in South Reno just did not hit the spot. I called in the order and they said they were backed up, so it would be 30-35 minutes. But it actually took an hour. For the butter chicken, the taste is there but it's not as flavorful as I hoped. I'm a little disappointed that none of the curries already come with rice. Especially considering the location in Sparks gives you rice with the curries. The naans were very very flat, but they had a good flavor to it. Indian food is a little pricey for the portion, in my opinion. The curries average around $16. Just the curry without rice. The naans around around $5, depending on which one you get, so actually that's a good price. The inside could use a little revamp. The leather on the benches are peeling off completely. Went for lunch on a Friday. Found the restaurant very tidy and clean. We ordered the Chicken Kadai and the Chicken Saag, and both were incredibly delicious! The service was great as well. I went for the lunch buffet. Some of the food still out was cold, and several of the items were missing. We had a difficult time finding the pricing before we went, and it was $20 for the buffet. My son wanted Indian recently when ordering from Postmates and I suggested we re-order from the place he chose last time. He wanted to try something new and suggested Bawarchi. I sighed. Their food and service have gone down over the years, and they always mess up my order if it's for delivery. He was set in his decision. He ordered butter chicken, rice, and naan. I asked for a Masala Dosa. The food took forever to arrive. When my sons butter chicken arrived he looked at it and said it already didn't look as good as the last place. Upon tasting it, he was again disappointed. Every mom wants to hear their teenager say "you're right mom," but not if it means they are stuck with a not great dinner. I can't say much about mine because my dosa came totally empty. I tried dunking it into the soup they gave me but to me, a dosa without the mashed potato filling is useless. Potatoes are my favorite food, mash them up, and it's true love. So receiving a dosa with nothing inside was a sad sad moment. I wrote to Postmates but this was one of the orders that could not receive any refunds. The receipt was right which means the store got the right order submitted, they just prepared it wrong. I really need to stop giving this place chance after chance because I'm always let down. I threw away the rest of my rice crepe and soup because it was lackluster and missing filling. My son didn't finish his butter chicken and said next time he would listen, and only order from the place he already rated "bussin bussin," to avoid any more letdowns. I've been fooled too many times by Bawarchi, with too many wrong orders received, too many hour or longer waits for pickup. I've ordered food, arrived to pick it up & have them tell me an hour after waiting that they ran out of pungalu and didn't want to make more for the night so I was only getting part of my order. That really bothered me because I had been physically waiting inside the restaurant for an hour, why not tell me an hour earlier so I could go somewhere else? Yes, I knew the service was terribly slow so I ordered ahead so that was OK, although the woman in the back who was apparently cooking yelled at the front-of-house guy, which was disconcerting. Price? Really expensive for what you get. Quality? It's gone really, really down. My chicken korma was about a 1/3rd fat and skin and I got a bonus piece of hair. I've been coming to Bawarchi for about five years now and singing their praise despite knowing how long the food typically takes. Unfortunately, it would seem that this restaurant has come to a place where their food quality has gone down and their service remains absolutely terrible. My husband and I have two young children which doesn't make for an enjoyable restaurant experience so we have ordered takeout for the majority of time. We had gotten used to not showing up when they told us our food would be ready, typically waiting to leave the house until five or 10 minutes after our quoted time. Last year on our anniversary it took an extra 45 minutes of waiting which would put us at closer to 90 minutes from when they originally quoted. I used to assume that the slow service time was due to how busy they were. In the past, I'd see many orders going out and many seats filled. I assumed we were farther back in the queue and their estimation skills weren't the best. Last night, I made my order at exactly 5 o'clock. I was told 15 to 20 minutes. I left my house 25 minutes after calling, knowing that I have a microwave and also they are typically wrong anyways. I left the restaurant with my food after 6 having waited an additional 30 minutes. In that time I saw one table, walk out, citing that they had waited 50 minutes. The host proceeded to completely set their table with the food that they had ordered after they left and wandered the restaurant looking out the windows, wondering when they were going to be coming back. In the 30 minutes I waited, aside from the table that left, I only saw one other order going out. So within 60 minutes, they are able to handle approximately three orders. (Of course more take out could have gone out while I was not there but the tables seated were not eating and I was sitting with 3 other takeout orders). Possibly petty but service related- I thought I was going to lose my mind because I heard the same Drake song about seven times before I made a joke to the host about the song being on repeat. He ended up turning off the music which was preferable, but I'm not sure why that was an issue in the first place. By the time we left the restaurant with our takeout, which I timed as best as I could considering the operating hours, my young child was absolutely starving and throwing a tantrum. I should have brought a snack to dinner. I had faith that the wait would be worth it. I ordered my favorite dishes and the flavor was mostly fine. When I dunked my spoon into the tikka masala, I had wondered for a moment, if they had forgotten to add my paneer, but found a few small chunks, much smaller than I would expect, at the bottom of the container. I plan on purchasing more paneer, so I can eat paneer tikka masala since last night I mostly had tikka masala rice. I absolutely love samosas with tamarind sauce and typically dig in and use the entire container. I was crushed when I pulled the chutney out of the takeout bag to find that there was probably a tablespoon in each one. There are many places I could get takeout that does not cost $55 and has a shorter waiting time. In the past it has been absolutely worth it for the quality of the food but since that has gone down, I will likely not be going back. It's unfortunate because Indian is one of my favorite cuisines and I will have to seek out a new place that is hopefully close to my home. For $55, I shouldn't have to ration chutney, nor should I have to stop by Whole Foods the following day to purchase paneer for my paneer dish. read more

We visited Bawarchi for dinner. We ordered beer, mango lassi, samosas, garlic naan chicken biryani, and Bawarchi goat curry. The staff did not ask how spicy we wanted our food. By the time I realized that she didn't ask, it was too late. Both items came out quite spicy, especially the biryani. They tasted great, but it was so spicy, I couldn't fully enjoy it. I loved the goat curry flavor (beware of small bones!) Samosas were just okay. Garlic naan was thin and chewy by the time it cooled. I did not like that all the sauces came out in plastic to go containers, even though we dined in. It made everything feel premade and just reheated. When we visited here in the past for lunch, it took very long for the food to come out, but it wasn't too bad for dinner. Probably because everything was already premade. However they need more people on staff because the dine in experience on a busy Saturday had us waiting for the food for an hour even though we came at 6 when it was less crowded!! You just need more than two people seating, taking care of the takeout, ordering and bringing dishes out unfortunately... management should hire more employees to help. The butter chicken had some issues- the sauce it was bathed in was delicious but where is the chicken? It was basically like a soup with tiny fragments/ essences of chicken but no real chicken. Big disappointment. The saag paneer was pretty decent. And the chicken dosa was incredible- some of the best chicken well marinated and the dosa was useful as a vehicle to dip into all the other sauces! Would have been a 5 star experience if the food didn't take an hour and the butter chicken actually had chicken! Definitely satisfies the craving I was having for Indian. As I said, the food is very good - I love North Indian food and the Tandoori chicken is as good as I've had, if a bit spicy at the "mild" designation. The service, however, leaves a lot to be desired. On Saturday I called in a takeout order at 4:30 - I made it clear I didn''t care what time I picked it up, just tell me when it would be ready, and they said 5. I got there at 5; they were far from busy - 2 tables occupied. I kept being told things like "it's almost ready," "5 minutes," and "we're boxing it up," but it was after 20 minutes of waiting that I got my food. Not acceptable. To address ambiance, which I had plenty of time to observe, it's another minus. Seats in the banquettes were word to the point of shabby, and the ambience is cold, open, and not very comfortable. We were originally going to another Indian restaurant but decided to give Bawarchi a try despite some of the negative reviews recently given to see for ourselves if they were unfounded. We were pleasantly surprised to find the recent reviews were indeed unfounded. We started with a ghee dosa, apparently this is one of the few Indian restaurants that make a outstanding ghee dosa, a must try for those uninitiated. The vegetable samosas were a standard order for my friend, she does seem to love samosas. I had to order the goat curry when it's on the menu! That is a must, so far, this is the best goat curry I have had compared to all the goat curries that have been offered in any of the local Indian restaurants to date. We also ordered the chicken tikka masala, that was so pedestrian compared to the goat curry. I think from this date forward my friend has saw the light and is sticking to only goat and lamb curries only, lol. I highly highly highly recommend the goat curry, their spices used is phenomenal for their goat curry, I would almost say they might compete with some of the goat curries I have tried in Vancouver Canada. The negative reviews I think is due to the american fast food culture, people are simply impatient and fail to enjoy their meal in a relaxed manner, it's all stuff and run. The extended wait times are not intentional, it's largely due to covid when workers are scarce and most restaurants are severely understaffed. On point flavors and food Period end of story... MIC DROP! Let me give you an example. You know when you have a boiled potato and you just slop some delicious sauce on it. I'm torn. Food is good overall I'd say A-. Matter paneer was tasty could have used more paneer. Samosas are excellent. BUT the place is really dirty. Most surfaces have some residue or oil on them. Random stuff stored everywhere. Glasses were really spotty. Tables were clean but just looking around and you'll see there has not been a deep clean in a long time. The floor is so filthy my shoes made a stick noise while walking. Been here twice and will try to find a better place based on cleanliness. I'd have given 4 stars if it was clean maybe 5. My friend and I went back and forth upon trying a place to lock-in pre-movie on a Friday evening. I had offered a few suggestions, but we both agreed to try a place close to our office. I had no idea how close Bawarchi was, and being my second time trying Indian food I tried to "study" the menu. I'm thankful I checked out Yelp, as the menu on the Yelp page had descriptions and some photos. Whereas, upon our being seated and seeing a QR code, I saw food titles but did not see descriptions so I ended up pulling up their Yelp page to view the menu to help my friend and I. Our waiter was nice and as we explained we were still learning, he helped provide suggestions in terms of spice levels. I had asked for a cocktail but there were not any alcoholic beverages so I ended up ordering a Sweet Lassi, it wasn't bad, not very sweet, I'm just not sure I would order it again. When it came for the food my friend had made suggestions in terms of ordering the Samosa Chat, which I found to be delicious. We ordered the garlic naan and another type of Naan which came recommended, it had amazing flavors in it. For my dish I went with the Butter chicken there was another dish that I had in mind but since I wasn't sure the spice level, I went with something that I knew did not come spicy. The downside was waiting on our bill to come, there was maybe five tables occupied, and one waiter but upon requesting the bill to actually receiving it with to-go containers took may 15 minutes, considering we had ticketed plans that became stressful foodwise everything was great, it was just he slow service that was concerning.
