We went at a rough time with a brutal heat index but came back with a decent collection of stones. My son wandered and found a few stones loose in the dirt of the mine. Definitely suggest bringing a pop up canopy for shade while mining. The sluicing option (buy a bag, pour in sieve, rinse) produced some great stones and fossils that we can't wait to tumble and polish. Most of the lot is gravel, which makes for difficult terrain for wheelchair users. The beds in the cabin are rough sleeping, especially after a day spent mining. If you can, pack extra padding for a better sleep. Overall, a good experience. We'll be back when the temps aren't so cruel and see what we can get when we aren't risking heat exhaustion to pound rocks.

Wendy and her son, Brad, who run the place are always friendly, cheerful, and extremely accommodating. We live in Phoenix and RV cross country every summer. This is one of the nicest RV parks we have ever stayed in! Last summer we were here for 4 days and loved it, so this summer we stayed for 2 weeks. We are definitely coming back here next summer and will do at least 2 weeks, possibly 3. If you're ever in New York's capital region this is definitely the park to stay in.

The owners are TERRIBLE people who threatened us with lawyers for telling them that their business is poorly run. It is a motel that is run like an airbnb with a code you put in to get into your room. There is no staff on site. After emailing the owners about the dirty towels, dirty bedding, dirty pillows and possible MOLD they said that it hasn't been cleaned in "2 weeks" due to a family emergency in the hospital. It seems to me like if you can't clean your property then you should cancel and refund any existing reservations. People left their shampoo in the shower the last time someone was there and that wasn't removed further proving the place wasn't cleaned. The hand towel had something yellow all over it. The bedding had some type of red sauce (maybe blood?) stain all over it and was always damp due to the massive ac/heating unit that is too big for the room. We had to purchase our own toilet paper as there wasn't any and the remote to the tv had batteries that had exploded in it. We also purchased our own batteries so we could use the tv at night. The door facing the road was UNLOCKED. The owners are not locals and live in NJ and frankly do not care about this property as proven by the fact that they're trying to sell it (for 1.1 million dollars. For a potentially mold infested motel!)

We did wish our 2 boats stuck together during the whole trip though. I was the only one who didn't catch a fish so I guess Aaron took pity and threw in an extra hour to be kind. It was just a slow day for fishing, which was no fault of Aaron's. Our group of 6 caught more than 10 fishes during our 5 hr trip (booked for only 4 hrs), but we only took home 5 because some of the fishes were too old so the meat wasn't advised to eat. Aaron also shared some history about the lake, how people who used to live there were forced to leave in order to create the man made reservoir, it was interesting & I love history. Whenever someone caught a fish, Aaron dropped everything and sprung into action to go catch the fish for us. We also lost our bait or had our hook snagged several times & Aaron helped us all those times. Towards the end of our trip, Aaron filleted the fish for us to take home. My friend's mom actually wanted the whole fish but we didn't know. We took home about 5 fish, so 10 small filets. The fish filets were gone within minutes for dinner lol, it was tasty & tender. It's a different feeling when you catch your own dinner. Aaron mentions that he also will go to Lake George for his service for an additional $100 travel fee. We may go to him again next summer. There's a mobile home park for the seasonal campers with permanent sites. This place has amazing history too. It even used to have an amusement park on it! Now it just hosts mini golf which is affordable at $5 for adults and $4 for kids. They have ice cream and drinks to buy. Normally they have food but the day I went, they had a family event so it was unavailable. The beach was just as wonderful as I remember. Every morning they till the sand so it's nice and fluffy. There are toilets nearby. Let's face it, you're at a campground not luxury hotel, adjust your expectations accordingly. They have a new office that is across from the beach, blink and you miss it! There are lifeguards on the beach which is great. Admission is $5 per person. The area has lots to do. Any lake activities: canoeing, kayaking, jet ski, boating. There are loads of hiking and biking trails too. Caroga lake is nearby but this is the gem imo. The fire tower is an excellent short hike with a great view too! Recommend over and over again!

Our tour started at the gift shop which has some great souvenirs and books. Our guide was really knowledgeable and had been giving tours for about 20 years and was able to speak to restorations and changes that had been made in that time. He speaks at length about the English Clarke family, how they came to sit up their home here, and how it remained largely authentic in many ways with some key restoration. This great estate was saved from demolition, and you can see the care that's gone into it from the Friends of Hyde Hall since. The guide was able to answer all the group's questions on the family who lived here and the objects on display, including what was original and what the functionality was. He also said some details get more depth in other specialty tours, and I was very intrigued by some of their events and holiday features. The Clarkes may have wanted a nice rustic manor, but its downside to tourists is that it's not the easiest place to get to. I definitely recommend checking this place out and the nearby state park.

Just a note, the lodge does not have air conditioning and while we were cozy there was a late time during one day that the humidity and temperature level were a little high and uncomfortable. While they do have air purifying fans in the bedrooms and the temperature drops to a comfortable level at night, if you need air conditioning to be comfortable you might want to consider that.

Accommodations: The aesthetics look nice from the outside but the rooms are not that nice and the walls are extremely thin so we heard every single word and noise from every room in the lodge. We also had to go down two flights of stairs into a he basement/dog training room to our bathroom, which didn't have hot water and smelled like pet urine. The host, Monique, is incredibly rude. She was entertaining personal friends in the common area of the lodge for both of the nights we were there. Her group took over the whole space, even though Monique's house is 50 yards away, and was drinking and partying well into the morning hours. It made us extremely uncomfortable to even try to go to the bathroom. Neither one of us, nor the other guests that weekend, got much sleep since they were so loud and the walls/doors are so incredibly thin. Monique is rude on every level. She criticized us for our dog's tail being cropped (was done long before we got her so it was far outside of our control) and was just condescending and disrespectful in general for the whole time we were there. The icing on the cake is that we forgot a new pair of pretty expensive glasses there. My wife called/texted Monique and she acknowledged that her husband had found them under the bed of the room we stayed in. She said she would send them to us (my wife even offered to pay for the shipping) but they never came. After a few weeks we both tried calling and sent several texts (one just pleading for a response) but she never once replied. Needless to say, we paid almost $500 for two nights there and are extremely disappointed with the service and how loud and uncomfortable the stay was. I grew up one town over from where Lodge Solange and my sincerest advice to anyone considering this place is to just keep looking. There are many much better and nicer / places and people in the Mohawk Valley.

Now, I could go on to…read morelist any number of minor gripes and inconveniences that come with staying anywhere, like that there was no shampoo or conditioner for the shower, there were some strange petrified bugs in the tub, things like that (which while they are true, they are not that big of a problem) but I would prefer to discuss aesthetics. While the room was rather dimly lit (as two of the four small lights in the room did not work) which I think added to the "moon" ambiance, what surprised me was the sheer magnitude of sun imagery in the room. That didn't quite make sense to me as there were more decorations relating to the sun than there were to the moon on the walls of our room. While I am a fan of all things astrological, it was merely confusing staying somewhere where the moon is allegedly the focal point. Pair that issue along with the Department of Health violation notice on the wall, which had us unsure of whether or not it was safe to drink the water, and the framed letter from Mitt Romney in the office talking about what a wonderful time it was to be a Republican, and you've got yourself a couple a slightly confused guests and a mere 3 rating. If only I could rate this Motel in number of moons, it would surely be lower as there was nowhere near as many as you'd expect at the Blue Moon Motel
