We were actually waiting for our Chinese takeout next door when we noticed this place and decided to give it a try. The variety of pastries really surprised us, so we asked the staff for recommendations and ended up ordering a cream puff and a blueberry Danish. The service was friendly and helpful, and the shop had a nice local bakery feel. We're not sure if this is considered a more traditional Boston-style bakery, but unfortunately it just wasn't our cup of tea. The texture of both pastries felt a little off to us, and while the flavors were okay, neither one really stood out. Very disappointed with the cannolis and macaroon cookies. Grew up in the area, & have loved this bakery since the 1980's. I Moved away & whenever I come to town I stop by specifically for cannolis & macaroon cookies. The quality has gone completely down hill. The cheese cannolis were awful, seemed more like cream than cheese. The macaroons were stale and hard as a rock. Thoroughly disgusted & heartbroken. read more

The woman working on Friday at 5pm may have been the single most unpleasant human being I have ever had the displeasure to transact with. When I entered she was berating a man for trying to pay with a credit card (oh yeah/ and it's cash only - 'cause who doesn't want to handle money in a pandemic?!). I honestly can't believe how angry, impatient and temperamental she was. Who can be that angry around cupcakes and cookies all day? But she looks away when she says it...which is classic liar's behavior. Ricotta pie - 2.7 stars. Weird flavoring and not made that day Fruit pies - 2.0 stars. Just ok. Rum cake - 3.5 stars. Good but over priced for such a small cake. A lot is just cream on the outside. Biscotti - 1.0 stars. Do not buy these. They are not baked daily nor are they fresh in any sense. If you want stale cookies go on a Monday. Pizza looked so old that it was white and moldy looking couldn't find the red sauce. Pastries were so dried out that they had no taste and were falling apart. Talk to the owner and she will tell you that they are too busy to restock. She rather profit off of selling stale items rather than keeping a reputation for good pastries and service. Too many local pastry shops to waste money on items that cannot be eaten. Profits before customer service and satisfaction is their motto. They should be ashamed with the prices they charge. read more

Excellent place to stop in for a wide variety of Italian pastries without having to travel into the city. This time I ordered an Italian, rum-soaked birthday cake. It was delicious. I called on a Tuesday for a Friday noon pickup. It was ready on time and was exactly like I remembered from my youth-- rum soaked yellow sponge with two layers of custard, a layer of strawberries, and frosted with real whipped cream. For $44, I think it was well priced. I found the service very pleasant. I do wish they'd beef up their digital/online presence-- I'm not even sure they have a working website. Would be nice to be able to order online and I'd hate to see this place go out of business because they didn't modernize. read more

Stopped to buy a sfogliatelle-It was hard as a rock, quite stale. Had to throw it out. I would recommend you try what you buy before you leave the store incase it is stale. Our family has been going to Royal for decades. Although the quality can vary: Italian Rum cakes and ricotta pies, we still frequented the bakery. Since I live far away - about an hour - I called to place a Thanksgiving 2022 pastry order the day before and was tersely cut-off by this woman on the first item. I didn't even get to finish my order. I wanted to order sfogliatelles, cannolis, and other Italian pastry to pick up but never got to finish my sentence. She said they are not taking small orders but I can come in Thanksgiving and "try my luck". Well I did try my luck - at another bakery - and was happy with my purchase. We are going to think long and hard before returning. We have spent thousands here during the decades. Sad. read more

I went into this shop on a Thursday around 5:15. The girl working was very unfriendly. She asked, "what do you want" just like that. I asked for 2 pastries. I said could I have powdered sugar on them. She took from the back of the tray so I could not see if the sugar was on there. So, I asked, is there powdered sugar on them. She answered, if you asked for powdered sugar, you got powdered sugar. Then she put them in a bag. I asked could you put them in a small box? She angrily grabbed a box and proceeded to put the bag into the box. She was the rudest I have seen. The older brunette is super rude also. Cookies are good but the service is eh. Lady did not use gloves and touched my cookies with her bare hands which concerns me because Covid. I also requested almond cookies but happened to inquiry about the pistachio cookies next to them so she started to pick up the pistachio, and when I told her "no the almond" 3 times she finally picked up the almond with the same napkin. Luckily I don't have any but allergies but if I did this wouldn't be appropriate. My friend has gone in multiple times and has had her order done incorrectly many of the times even when it has been in person. After going into the store to have her order exchanged for the proper food after given the wrong one, the woman working refused to give her the correct items so she had to pay again to get the correct things. They also did not package the food properly (as in I bought a cupcake and she threw it in the bag and the frosting was everywhere). Food is good but for better service I'd go elsewhere. read more

Even though they did not ordinarily offer what we were looking for, they went above and beyond to accommodate our needs. Sorry -- it's a neighborhood pastry shop and it's so convenient, but every time I go in to buy fresh pastry or a cake, I'm really disappointed. I actually tossed a cake I bought there, it just wasn't worth the calories. Same with their cannolis and lobster tails. No crunch at all to the lobster tails. Nothing in comparison to Modern pastry or Mike's pastry, I would even take Whole Foods bakery over this place. They have "fresh" pizza available, but it tastes like freezer burn. It must be previously frozen and heated in the morning. The Italian cookies are decent and seem fresh though, sold by the pound. I would never consider ordering here for the holidays, I would rather drive 20 minutes to an authentic Italian bakery. read more

Awesome little pastry shop. Everything is made fresh. I have gotten a couple cakes made for special occasions. I once got a sheet cake with raspberry filling and fresh sliced strawberries. It was incredible. The frosting is not that thick overwhelmingly sweet kind most cakes have. It is light and airy like whipped cream. All of their sweet little Italian pastries are so delicious! Cakes, cannolis, half moon cakes, strudels, cookies....anything you could possibly want from a bakery you will find here. Prices for the cakes are a little on the high side but they are made custom to order and worth every penny. Everything else in the store is reasonably priced. Today was my First time Going here and I was amazed how Friendly the Staff was Reasonable prices, and assortment and Selection was Fantastic what was even better , getting them home and taste testing them we got Cream Puffs, Napoleons , Bear Claw and much more even took a Taxi to them and we got our Taxi Driver some Goodies as well Everything was Perfect I have never in my life had such a good experience and the best Napoleon I have ever had in my life. I haven't tried the pastries, but I'm giving a one star rating for customer service. I'm visiting friends tonight so I stopped into Royal Pastry in Lexington to bring my friends, one of whom has cancer, pastries. I entered the shop with a mask on. The woman at the counter rudely said masks aren't required here so you can take yours off. I replied I was wearing it for medical reasons. Again she rudely said I can't hear you with your mask. If I had time to go elsewhere, I would have walked out. Instead I had to shout what I wanted while keeping my mask on. read more

Great prices--we got a small lobster tail, an eclair, and a huge M&M cookie for under $6. The lobster tail ricotta/pastry cream was fantastic (not too sweet; great texture), but the pastry was chewy rather than light or even crisp. The eclair might have been more accurately called a Boston cream pie... thing. The pastry cream alone was okay, but the pastry was dry. The chocolate on top was chocolate frosting rather than ganache, so it was too thick and sweet. I wouldn't get this item again, though it tends to be my favorite at other bakeries. The service was friendly, albeit with very lukewarm enthusiasm for their inventory. (When we asked the cashier what she ate there, she said she was "Really sick" of all the stuff they had.) Went today around 3pm. The posted sign said they were open until 5:30 pm. The door was locked but there were two employees behind the counter. They saw us and did open the door or acknowledge us. We tried calling and they did not answer. If they closed early or have a different procedure due to the pandemic then it should be posted somewhere for customers. Royal Bakery is OK. but it is chain, well it was a chain. They only have 2 locations left, they closed the Belmont location. But what what really determines what they sell is that they mass produce pastries There are too many robust choices in the pasty cabinet. Not a lot of creativity or variety. In their own words from their web site: "Over the years, our business has evolved from a small neighborhood pastry shop to a large supplier of fresh baked goods to customers, businesses, restaurants and caterers in Cambridge, Belmont, and Lexington and many surrounding communities." An interesting aside: I have often wondered if all the Tira Misu at all of the local Italian Restaurants comes from here because it all tastes the same and it tastes like Royal Tira Misu. If you are in a hurry, live in Lexington, and you are shopping for the kids, Royal will do. If you have an extra 12 minutes support some of the truly local bakeries. The smell of freshly baked goods alone will make the trip worth while. But we go to Royal instead of Stop & Shop and enjoy what we buy. It also kind of bugs me that they pass themselves off in Lexington as a small, local business. Why? I know that brings in customers because Lexington shoppers like to support local. I can't help wondering what the buyers would say if they knew that this is not a 'small, local business'? Well compared to Stop & Shop it is. Which is why we go there when we are in a hurry and want a sweet for desert. read more

I love Royal Pastry! Their chocolate cupcakes are wonderful AND cheap, the black and white cookies delicious, and that braided cinnamon/nut roll thing - DIVINE. Other yummy things I've enjoyed here are carrot cake, brownies and gingerbread men. The only thing that makes me drop a star for this place is the whoopie pie. Now, let me say, Royal Pastry used to have my absolutely favorite, drool-inducing, perfect frosting-to-cake-ratio whoopie pie. But in the past couple years, it seems like the frosting recipe has changed, I can taste that sort of anisette flavor in it which I'm not a fan of. It used to be my go-to, but now I usually stick with the nut roll thing, because with a cup of tea, it is absolute perfection. read more

I have been a faithful patron of Royal Pastry shop since its location in Belmont center. I have referred countless friends and family to this staple institution in the area. Today I am sad to say was my last time in the the Lexington location as the customer service was a total turn off. the hours are clearly listed with a closing time of 6pm. I arrived from work at approximately 530 and the older brunette woman working behind the counter was less than pleasant stating "you know you should have called in advance!, people want to go home". she proceeded to take my order and attend to it and the. 2 more patrons walked in, she angrily stated "could one of you lock the door, I cannot help any more customers" now keeping in mind still before 6pm. She then finished with my order and I said thank you very much, she had the audacity to say "if you really want to thank me you can give a tip", which I already had done, tips should not be asked for eapecially for a negative experience. I paid for my order and left but very disappointed as much as the pastry is amazing the poor customer service is not worth revisiting this institution. read more

Amazing Italian Pastries! We have been going here for 30+ years! We moved away from Massachusetts many years ago and we still come back here every year when we visit family and we STOCK UP before returning to Virginia! We have lived all over the East Coast and it is still our favorite Italian bakery. We have found some great individual pastries elsewhere, but no other bakery compares on the whole for Italian pastries. Especially their custard pastries. Royal Pastry is tried and true and their prices are AWESOME! And NO, they are NOT closed as reported on some sites. That was the Belmont location that closed. Not bad. Royal Pastry is an Italian-flavored little bakery located in Lexington that has to be one of the better baked goods values inside of Route 128. It's got an impressive selection of breakfast and dessert baked goods highlighted by its cannolis, cakes and eclairs. I'll very partial to the mocha cakes which feature two large dollops of sweet filling on top. Raspberry twists are also impressive and make an excellent early morning treat. The freshness and quality of the items sold here is impressive, and so is the service. Prices are very low - in fact, their sweet treats are cheaper than what one would find in any grocery stores I've visited in the area. Parking is the only problem here, as it is a bit tough getting in and out at busy times. However, based on the quality and variety of their selection and the very reasonable prices, Royal Pastry compares well with the best bakeries in the area. Will certainly be back. read more
