Lemon bars, squashed, like my mood after dealing with the lunatic lady at the counter.
Pescataria N.

The woman working on Friday at 5pm may have been the single most unpleasant human being I have ever had the displeasure to transact with. When I entered she was berating a man for trying to pay with a credit card (oh yeah/ and it's cash only - 'cause who doesn't want to handle money in a pandemic?!). I honestly can't believe how angry, impatient and temperamental she was. Who can be that angry around cupcakes and cookies all day? I would never suggest going here unless you'd like your day ruined and your lemon squares literally and figuratively squashed. Somebody pass the Zoloft.

rum cake. Ever since I first came here 13years ago, this rum cake has since be with me on all special occasions! Thanks!

Stopped by here on Saint Joseph's Day for zeppol. It was very good. Glad there is a pastry shop close by to get some of my favorites.

just went in there for a coffee and some treats for my kids. I ended up eating all the treats, so I'll have to go back later today.

We've gotten many Italian Rum cakes from Royal Bakery. They're always so moist and fresh and delicious. Would never go anywhere else for one

they are extremely reasonably priced, their pastries are much better than bova's or mike's in the north end!!!

Ok, but a little disappointing. It must be difficult running a business like this and building a…read morefollowing. I got inspired by watching youtube to make a jambon buerre sandwich - supposedly a popular quick sandwich for Parisians. The sandwich is half a baguette with butter and French bistro ham. I tried searching all over for the French bistro ham with no luck. The only options were online sources with expensive shipping and/or expensive minimum order sizes. Somehow I stumbled upon MA-France nearby in Arlington and they sell jambon-buerre sandwiches. It's a small shop that sells sandwiches, pastries, and a small offering of French food products. Lots of pastries and baked goods like quiche, tarts, cookies, croissants, etc. The cheese offerings were very limited and basic. I can imagine that the cheeses that they sell are the same types and brands that they use for making sandwiches. For example, they sell President brand Brie - that you can also buy at Costco and market basket. Disappointing, but understandable because they can't afford to buy more variety and more expensive offerings without a big enough client base to buy those cheeses before they go bad. Getting back to the sandwich - it was half a baguette with some thick slices of butter and two pieces of French bistro ham. The bread was kind of dense and the crust was more chewy than crispy. I was disappointed that they didn't bother to spread the butter, but if they're not selling enough sandwiches then they're probably keeping the butter in the refrigerator - making it too difficult to spread. When I got home I fixed up the sandwich to my liking. Overall, the sandwich was okay, but not good enough to make me want to go back. At least I was able to solve my hunger for the jambon buerre sandwich.

Now it's quite underwhelming. The apricot croissant is now some smaller glorified danish that has no richness or personality. The plain croissant is quite "bready" now, whereas it used to be light and buttery. I have a sneaking suspicion that they have a different croissant supplier now. What saved this spot from a lower grade is that the pain au raisin and chausson aux pommes are passable. Also a save is that they still offer various French products, from soaps to cheeses to canned goods. I have to find a new French bakery in the area.

All have been great, except for the bagels (which were mediocre) and portokalopita (which was amazing, but only available on Saturdays). A bit pricey (their bagels are $3 each, compared to $1.65 at IGGY's, which has much bigger and in my view tastier bagels); perhaps to be expected from a Lexington establishment. One thing that's a bit frustrating is the limited selection of pastries. On most days, even if you get there by 11am, not much is left, and the variety isn't good to begin with. The exception is Saturdays. If the store owners are reading this, please increase the quantity and variety of your pastries!

For years I used to get up early just for them at the Waltham farmer's market it's a treat in our house. This Saturday I brought bagels home, everyone was excited ... and they were not good. The everything bagel's spices were burnt so bad it still tasted burnt after scraping them off. The others tasted more like dinner rolls that were less than fresh. I was excited to try the new sour dough olive bread. It was not good. It tasted like the focaccia failed so they rolled it up and called it bread. The olives were good but the oil tasted cheap. I am very disappointed. I might try a few other things and I hope they improve.
