I've been meaning to write a review for this place for a long time now and finally got the time to do it. As you can see I've given it 2 stars which isn't all that great. Reasons being the 20 dollar price tag to get in.. only to meet with very substandard patrons. The drinks were exceptionally high priced even for a nightclub and even though the place was large.. it was a dump. I have come to the conclusion that bar hopping is more enjoyable and economical than clubbing and The Roxy lead me to this conclusion. I just recently came here to see a show, Midland in concert and it was a really wonderful small scale venue! First of all it is very stunning when you walk in! The bar is located in the middle with the stage in front and there isn't really a bad seat in the house... Drinks were not tooooo highly marked up and the bartenders were very quick- not always common at a concert venue. Easy to get to by car, lots of good spots to eat or drink before hand, and easy to get in and out of. read more

Royale you guys royally messed up last night (9/16/2016) for Krewella with your inconsistent shoes policy. I saw many people get turned away tonight just because they were wearing the exact sneakers that they were allowed to go in nights prior. Thanks for the heads up... And when did you guys decide to change this rule? Just that night? On Krewella at Royale | 9/16/16? When many fans already bought tickets and were denied entry? That's really messed up guys. I've never seen Royale be so strict in their dress code as tonight. If you guys do want to enforce a dress code, at least be consistent about it. And if you're wondering on what basis I'm making my claim, I was denied entry the first time around, but was let in the second time after I waited in line again and got a different bouncer. Good job. If you guys are going to enforce a strict dress shoes policy, at least give your patrons an advance warning, because we've been coming in wearing casual sneakers for quite a while now. read more

Royale, you have royally changed for the better. Although you as a night club is still giving me a love-hate relationship, as a music venue, at least for 2015, you have been doing a fan-freaking-tastic job. Hit name DJs like Hardwell, Dada Life, Audien, Blasterjaxx? Yes please. You've got me hooked, and all other negatives that were glaringly present are sufficiently reduced to gravel. Let's just talk about my best 2015 night here, Hardwell. It was on a Monday night (a well-worth sacrifice to get someone like Hardwell up here - let's just say the struggle was reals on Tuesday morning) and tickets were worth a hefty change ($50ish if you got them early). However, you're paying for the experience, and the great people that big sets like Hardwell attract. Definitely don't go in thinking it'll be a cheap night - drinks are priced like any other night ($10+), so leave your financial worries at home and swipe those credit cards. Anywho, we arrive a little before 10:30pm. FYI, on a weekend night, at any other night club establishment, that's early. Freaking early. Literally, you'll walk into an empty club pumping loud music, awkwardly standing near the edge and staring at the strangers across the room. But guess what? Despite being on a Monday, this was the longest line I've EVER seen for a club in Boston, especially Royale. It went past the last building on the block, going towards near the park. What! Although I hate lines, I was waiting with fervor anticipation to what my night would bring. After chatting with a few nice people in line, we enter for a pat-down. Yes, this place performs pat-downs. No, this is not a violation of your rights, it keeps the place safe, and the people who do it are nice, keeping it as non-awkward as possible, so kudos. Afterwards, you trot up the red carpet staircase, scan your tickets, up some more regal staircases, and you'll enter Royale. The scene that befolds you can be described as a EDM concert, contained within a room. With jazzling, multi-colored spotlights and lasers, a DJ set can be seen in the middle, on top of a stage. The middle-front consists of a dance floor, while the middle-middle is where the floor tables are. There are two bars on both the left and right side, and another bar in the middle-back. Lastly, you'll see an accessible second level where you can peer down onto the ground floor. This floor also contains additional tables and bars, as well as offer patrons a quick reprieve from the beating bass below. The highlight of the night is the atmosphere and people. For Royale to invest time, energy and money to get expensive DJs like Hardwell to come, is great, because it's hard to reproduce this type of atmosphere at a normal night club. Whereas most normal nights the dance floor is filled with creepy guys trying to dance with girls that came as a large pack and only want to socialize/dance with one another in a circle, at Hardwell, everyone was facing the DJ, bouncing to his set, and literally going to the next stranger on the dance floor, whether guy or girl, and screaming "WHOOOOOOOOOO!!!" You meet great, friendly people at events like these. and I sure hope Royale continues to offer more amazing nights with hit line-ups. read more

Came here for a concert last night, and kinda missed the gothy decrepitude of Roxy. Royale is definitely cleaner and brighter than the Roxy, and the carpet isn't all ratty. The dance floor is bigger and nicer. But there's something sterile and blah about the decor of the whole place. More disturbing is the lackadaisical attitude of the staff. Trying to get anyone to pick up the phone about what time the band went on, or respond to emails was impossible. I'm still waiting, in fact. LOL. I did not get carded. Yes, I am legal and damn well look it only too well. And it's not like I was going to a Justin Beiber concert. But if management isn't going to drub it into employees' heads that EVERYONE gets IDed, even as a formality, it really makes me wonder about the level of attention to detail. My bag did get searched, and I was asked if I had any weapons. FTR, I was seeing a post-punk band (read: attracts an old, creaky crowd), not a thugalicious one. Then, the security guy at the front of the stage was too busy playing games on his iPhone during the show. Seriously? This guy was getting paid to watch the crowd, not the little checkers bopping around on the screen. In fact, some woman had to literally smack the guy upside his shoulder to get him to attend to a freakshow in the front row who was trying to set a playing card on fire with his lighter. Instead of stepping that weirdo out of there, the suit basically raised his finger and wagged it a few times. Yeah, in the grand scheme of things, this stuff was not dire, life-threatening, or a reason to ruin the evening. And if future shows were as badly promoted as this one was (less than 250 there), it would be a killer place to see acts waaaay up close. But seriously, if you own/manage any club, you need to run a tight ship. Especially down in the Theater District. That area attracts its own hellmouth level of shit. Sloppily-run clubs lose clients and licenses. And if even tiny details are overlooked, it makes you wonder what could be ignored at the larger level. Royale is a place that's aiming for Miami-style nightlife, and if I'm ever going to buy a $300 bottle of Belvedere for me and my girls, I want to know the place and service are solid. If a club wants to run with that crowd, it's gotta prove it's a champion. Based on the little I've seen, Royale isn't there yet. read more

So this is the newest hot spot in Boston? Came here last Saturday, the line was ridiculously long and it looked impossible to get in. The only reason I came was because I was with a group of people that knew one of the managers. So I got in right away with no cover. Bonus. If I had to try to get in here by any other means, I wouldn't even bother. The space is enormous. Potentially the only positive. A ton of people but still relatively easy to move around. The drinks were weak and expensive. The DJ was mostly horrible. I can't stand when DJs play music that is impossible to dance to (i.e. remixed classic rock songs). Don't know if it was the DJ controlling the lights, but waaaaaaay too much use of flood lights and strobes. During one song, every 30 seconds all the flood lights would come on and everyone would have to shield their eyes. The strobe lights were on for what felt like a 10 minute nonstop period. A few people in my group had to keep their eyes on the floor so we wouldn't get disoriented and nauseous. Absolutely ridiculous. The stage dancers were all ugly, unskilled, and uninterested. And what's with the giant man-puppets? Sooooo strange. This place has tons of potential. With proper tweaking it could be on par with the best places in NY, LA, Miami, and Vegas. But until someone lets me know that those tweaks have happened, I'm just going to save my pennies for NY, LA, Miami, and Vegas! read more

I was here for a concert and nope.. I would not have come otherwise. Sound was good.. people were.. err.. alright. Why do I always get stuck in front of the girl with the long dominatrix-like-whipping-hair? I just wanna cut it off.. and say it's for donation. ;) Anyone ever see My Blue Heaven? You know when Steve Martin and Rick Moranis are doing the dirty dancing in that club? The Roxy reminds me of that club. Minus seats. Plus an illuminated blue 80s bar in the middle. The bar is pretty expensive. I didn't care to drink but my friends were pretty POed they didn't pre-grame. haha.. On the plus side, I never had to wait for the bathroom and they weren't too narsty. At the end of the set they pretty much kicked us out so that the dancing, grinding, and ho/playa action could begin. How does this place manage to get good groups every once in awhile? read more

Royale was everything I expected it to be: one of the "hottest" nightclubs in Boston that is in fact extremely overrated and so disgusting that I had to shower twice before I felt clean again. I went here with about 30 people for a friend's 21st birthday party. Luckily, we had a hook so we had two tables and got to cut the line. Unfortunately for everyone else, you have to pay a $25 cover and wait in a line of over 100 people deep (even though inside was far from crowded). Even the VIP line was about 30 people long! You are in a gross and scary part of town as it is and then you get frisked at the front door for weapons (oh yeah, that makes me feel SOO much safer!). Once inside the truth about this place REALLY came out. Formerly known as The Roxy, I don't think anything has been cleaned, replaced, or repaired since the 80's. I decided to put that all aside and try and enjoy this monumental occasion with my friends and make the best of it. The music was what you would expect - techno, "Jersey Shore" style fist pumping, scantily-clad go-go dancers on stages, top 40 remixes, etc. We had a great time dancing the night away at our table and that was about the only good thing I could point out. Next to follow are my TOP 2 criticisms about this place, and to me these were absolute deal breakers. FAIR WARNING TO BEER DRINKERS: the only beer selection in the entire club is Amstel, Heiniken Light, and Busch Light....yes that's right I said Busch Light - not Bud Light, not Coors Light or Miller Lite - BUSCH LIGHT. You will then be expected to pay $8 for that Busch Light. But don't drink too much of it because then you will have to pee, and this place has THREE STALLS to accommodate probably over 500 women. A trip to the bathroom literally took close to an hour, I am not exaggerating or joking. All in all don't let anyone fool you into thinking that Royale is the "hottest nightclub in Boston." I've been to plenty of other places that have the same kind of music, the same over priced drinks, and the same scantily-clad women that are cleaner, more guest friendly, and much more fun. Walk across the street to Market or jump in a cab to Umbria, you will have a much better time and get more for your money. Consider yourself warned. read more

If you like clubs, you'll probably like Royale. It's got loud music, great sound system, bright lights, entertainers and crowds of people who love to dance. Ladies, be VERY CAREFUL about your drinks. A friend was slipped something here and it was only sheer luck that we were out for a girls night and she wasn't left alone. Speaking of drinks, they're really expensive and relatively weak, but the service is friendly and fast. It takes forever to get a taxi anywhere near this area, even if you leave at 1:20 (though this is typical Boston downtown). Overall, a great place to be if you're looking to go clubbing. Make sure to go on a night Brek.One is DJing--he's the best. And get a slice of pizza at New York Pizza down the street afterwards. read more

I hate this place. Yes, I'm giving it four stars, but I hate it so much. Allow me to explain. I don't go for the club nights, but I like the shows they put on. The venue is such a perfect medium size. They get a lot of awesome acts that are too big for the Paradise, and too small for House of Blues. Major points for that. The place is spacious and comfortable, and the temperature is controlled really well. Great sound, too, and the coat check is really nice. So why do I hate it? Because shows will end awkwardly early in order to accommodate Jersey Shore-esque dance parties. I understand they want to be in the club scene, but from the concert goers perspective, it sucks to have the show end by 9:30 or 10 pm on a Saturday night. The fact that they do this makes me feel... icky. It feels like such a money-grab. Speaking of money-grabs, watch out where you buy your drinks from during the concerts. Yeah, the same drink will cost a buck or two more on the second floor. Pretty unbelievable, right? So that's why I hate the Royale and will continue to give them my money. read more

One of the hottest clubs I've ever been to. I've partied in Miami, NYC, Dallas, DC, Vegas, and many more but I loved my night at Club Royale! I stopped by on a Friday night. First, the music is absolutely spectacular. The DJ's really now how to play some good hard hitting Electro house music. The crowd could get a little ghetto, lots of drunk Asians, but it was a really fun time. The venue is beautiful. The club is actually on the 2nd floor. and the dance floor is HUGE! Everyone was dancing! Drink prices were reasonable, $9-$12. Cover is $15 before midnight and $20 after midnight. If you're in Boston and you like partying, you must come here! I needed to update my review, because I finally got to see a show at Royale. Last night I had the pleasure of seeing the very talented Brett Dennen at Royale, and it was, in a word, scrumptrulescent. This venue seriously rocks (pun intended, sir). I've never been a huge fan of GA locations, but Royale sets itself apart by offering comfy couches, padded benches, high bar tables; plenty of places to rest your derriere after some hardcore booty shaking or weird barefoot hippie swaying. Another great facet of this place is the dark corners, perfect for nefarious deeds...or just making out. They had some good beers on tap (UFO was $5). Drinks at the bar are pretty standard prices, and depending on the bartender you can get pretty good pours. I'm going to start going to way more shows at Royale. I might not even care who is playing due to those awesome dark corners. read more

Royale is by far my favorite concert venue in Boston. Paul Van Dyk, Tiesto, Aoki, Armin, Swedish House Mafia, they bring in all the big acts. There is a huge dancefloor, 3 bars downstairs, 3 upstairs, and plenty of balcony and other areas to sneak off to. The soundsystem here is by far the best I've heard in Boston, and as the night goes on they really crank up the bass. Some commentary towards the negative reviews: It's a dance club. Expect techno, not country/rock. They tend to break out the lasers later in the night too. Expensive drinks: Go to any club in Boston that's actually a club, not a "clubby bar" and drinks will be the same price, if not more. Tanqueray tonic (heavy on the Tanqueray) was $9. That's really not bad, and much better than NYC. The bartenders are also typically very good. Cover: Every real club in Boston has a $20-$25 cover. Get to know a promoter, you will not pay one. It's really not that difficult, and most will "reduce" anyone to $10 as long as you're there by a certain time. Most of the negative reviews seem to be from people outside of the typical clubbing demographic who expect top notch entertainment at dive bar prices. We poppin' bottles on dem champagne floorssssssss. On a sultry summer Friday night last month, my crew of all boys and lil' ol' me were dyinggggg to see DJ Helena at Royale. Trying to get a group of bros into the club was not going to hold us back, so we did what any non-lady group does, we bought bottles. Once we were escorted up the winding staircase, which was SUPER fun in my five inch heels #FML, we were taken to our table that was situated close to the stage. Yes, get me as close to Helena as possible, please! There are go-go dancers positioned all around the bottle service area and other dancers around the floor. It wasn't the norm I was used to so it was kind of fun. The club is pretty large and looks like it used to be a theater of sorts. The bathroom has an attendant, who told me she doesn't take tips. WHAT. I stood stock still and stared at her while her second head formed on her shoulders because I could not believe what she had said. I pressed a ten into her palm and said, "well you should!" Pay the bathroom attendants some respect, Boston! Once DJ Helena took to the stage, all bets were off. Our poor cocktail waitress was slammed around all night, the champagne poured and spilled everywhere, and our second bottle of vodka took a very long time to walk itself over to our table, which kept rolling away. The tables are on wheels, and the buffoons from outside the VIP section were intent on getting a closer look at my home girl on the stage. So they wheeled our little VIP table with its $300 bottle of vodka on it out of their way. I wanted to be mad, but I honestly couldn't stop laughing at how ridiculous it was. Most clubs have bouncers at the ropes to VIP sections, and several guys constantly mopping up the spills so klutzes like me don't fall over. I didn't fall, but I'm pretty sure I left a bevvy of bruises on my guys while trying to hold myself up on the champagne floors. I have seen a couple of concerts here (Porcupine Tree & Blackfield), and I have also worked a show here (GoGo's) back when it was the Roxy. To me, this is a strange venue. First and foremost, this is a nightclub inside a hotel. Most rock concerts will start very early because it changes to club nite right afterwards. If you're working here, everything loads in the back door, up a hill, and into a tiny elevator all whilst passing hotel waitstaff. When you finally make it upstairs, the stage is the size of a postage stamp. There are some house lights, but not really enough to make any concert look good. However, the sound system is great! If you're attending a show, the upside is that this is a very small venue. It only holds about 1000 people, so there really isn't a bad 'seat' in the house. If you can gain access, the balcony is my favourite part - it's pretty swanky with plush couches.. The downside is that its a small venue so it can get very loud. If the sound crew sucks, you will need your earplugs. (I am still deaf from the GoGo's concert I worked!) That's why they put a huge sign on the bar which lists beer prices in bold letters - so you don't have to yell at the bartender. Harpoon!! $7!! That said, it's still a decent place to see a show. I've never been to Royale when it's functioning as a dance club. From what I've read about it I probably wouldn't enjoy it that much. When I did vist the venue it was to watch underground Hip-Hop crew OFWGKTA play a sold-out show to an extremely amped crowd a few months back. So, this review is more so about the venue itself, not so much the nightclub experience it may normally serve up. The building itself is both gorgeous and labyrinthine. It's a multi-story, historic-looking theatre with an enormous, heavily decorated, multi-balconied performance-space/club-room. The room itself is pretty and comfortable but the sound-system and acoustics weren't necesarily up to the quality I would expect from a venue of this size and status. I can only hope the sound is better on club nights. Like any big-city bar the drinks were way-way overpriced for what you got. I mean, they were over-priced period ($10 for a Rum & Coke), but add the fact that you're being given a plastic thimble of ice and the gouging is just that much more painful. They also seemed to have a limited selection of spirits available during the concert. I can only hope the bar selection grows when the place morphs into a nightclub. All in all, it wasn't a terrible place to see a show. Granted, I'd prefer seeing a band I like somewhere like the Paradise, The Middle East, or even the now-deceased (R.I.P.) Avalon instead. But for a theatre-sized venue it wasn't half-bad. It's definitely prettier than somewhere similar in size like Worcester's Palladium, but I think I've felt more comfortable, had more fun, and experienced better sound & lights there. read more

I feel like I should do two reviews for this place because of this last experience but I will cram it into one. I was here for a concert, David Nail, over the weekend and at first thought it was great. The venue is small enough that there is not a single bad place to stand when watching the band. Also you have easy access to beer and bathrooms which you cant say about any other concerts. The sound was great and atmosphere was just as good. Overall the concert was a real good time, until it ended... About 10 minutes after the concert the lights all turn on and bouncers come out of the wood work kicking every single person out. We had planned on staying for the night there to drink until we get approached by three bouncers and told to finish our drinks or throw them out but either way we have to get out. This was the dumbest thing I have ever seen. They legit kicked out every single person from the concert and started setting up for the next venue, I think some Dj's. Looks like they didn't want the country crowd scaring away the douche bag Ed Hardy crowd. Overall I would say this place is DECENT, at best. Go for a concert and you will have a good time but be warned you are going to be ushered out of the place before you even realize the concert is over by a group of tool bag bouncers. read more

I have front and back experience at this place. I've come as a concert-watcher and also as a roadie geek/friend of a band. On the concert-goer side: The bouncers are nice guys. If you're nice to them, they'll be nice to you. The "Will call" line can be a little irritating when they lose tickets or get names confused, but I've always had things sorted out in the end. The venue is incredibly spacious and the lighting is pretty well put together. On the band side: Everyone that works there is incredibly cooperative. If you need or want something, they'll assist in getting you it within their means. Set up/tear down is laid out pretty well and sound checks usually run pretty quickly. Backstage/band area is clean and they even have a shower (which can be the best thing depending on previous tour days). Go here, book here. read more

What can I say, the night is what you make of it. Minus some of the slimy men/boys there, Royale was a really fun club with a wild crowd that packs the dance floor until way past 2 in the morning on a Friday night. Music may need a little tune up, cause while there was some good old radio top 40's remixes, there was a bunch of awkward techno music in between for you to save your awkward robot dances for. Between 3 Asian girls within the hour... 3 shots of vodka for $27. 3 shots of amaretto sour for $27. 2 shots of raspberry kamikazi for $20. 1 hot bartender. 3 more shots of red jungle juice for free. And yet...nobody was near drunk. Speaks volumes for how dilute the mixed drinks were. I say, if you're out for girls night, watch out for....lets see, First the Brazilian men. Then the Hispanic men. Then the Korean boys. Then the Chinese boys. Then the random guy who travels by himself and kidnaps your friend while he dances with her. Don't worry, If she's not drunk, she will find herself back. Bring your own toilet paper if you plan to use the bathroom and $15 cover. I'll be back for more nights out with the girls and to watch the Go Go dancers shake what their mama's gave them. read more

I would pay $30 for a ticket to see a cool band such as Pinback rather than pay $9.00 for a drink. Over-rated, in need of a make over, has been club! Re-think your business plan. Half your crowd was underaged college kids drinking water from the tap, um 'cause they can't afford that price for a drink even with their fakey. The only saving grace was that Pinback rocks, but they would have killed it more if your sound system was up to par. Not to mention I had the company of two of my cool gurls! I went here for the grand opening and as some of you may know this used to be the old Roxy. When I heard that they were re-opening the Roxy I thought to myself "I didn't even know they closed it in the first place". Well When I walked in I figured out why, this is basically the same place with a new name, new furniture, and a fresh coat of paint. The other major change is that they tried to make this space more lounge like by removing the dance floor and replacing it with couches, couches you have to pay for bottle service for. So with this they removed the dance floor making the stiff crowd here more so. On the positive side the female staff was very attractive (I didn't see one male bartender) and the place is huge. It's not a bad place but I don't think it is for me. As a side note I was never a huge fan of the Roxy either. read more

I want to like the Roxy. It's big, plays some decent mash ups, and has ladies nights. That being said...it also has very lax security and seems to attract very sexually aggressive drunk men. Sure, I know all clubs tend to have this problem, but it seems more prevalent at the Roxy then elsewhere. I have been approached and practically dragged across this club by the hair and also had a stranger walk up behind me and bite my neck so hard it bled. Spent a fun night in the ER after that one! They do serve strong, large drinks though and if you go with a group of good people it can be fun. Just keep your girl friends close and the weirdos away! read more

I went here only 2 times. But both times I went I got laid. So if you're looking for some pretty easy girls (or maybe I was just lucky) this is probably the place to go. It's big enough (although I haven't been there for a while, are the couches still in awkward places?) I also like the other things that are going on. Like a girl with a hula hoop dancing on top of a pillar etc. I forgot how much the cover was but I can say, without a doubt, Royale is probably the better of the night scenes in Boston. Hey Royale, keep up good job and keep bringing good DJs into town! PVD, Above&Beyond, Matt Zo are all great. But, but.... If you decide to have Matt Zo to stop playing at 12am, and end the night there, you got to have a WARNING in all caps posted on the ticket (and everywhere else). Like: "Warning, this nightclub will close at 12 am tonight, don't waste our time!" That's absurd, since when nightclubs in Boston are closing at 12? It's getting worse, 2 am is not late enough, but ok. To have a night out from 10pm to 12am - that's just bullshit. And also, you got to figure out the coat check situation, it took an hour last night to get a coat back, the line was awful. Otherwise a good place, beer is like $7, music is fine. I went to a rock and roll show here. I don't recommend doing that. The Royale (the old Roxy) is primarily a dance club. As such, it is operated like a downtown dance club, i.e. heavy security equipped with metal detectors to make sure us hipsters don't have knives. When I got to the show at about 8:15 (show was supposed to start at 8), there was a line forming to get in. Why? Because they only had one security guide with his security wand to search what I'd guess was about 800 people. This might be okay for a dance night that's going all night, but this is a 2 hour show, so every minute we have to wait in security is a minute where we're not seeing one of the two acts that are performing. Later in the night, I heard people talking about missing the headliner's first 2 songs while trying to get in. Then there's the club itself. This is the venue's only redeeming quality. Sound was pretty good, and the layout was excellent for a show. Wide and not too long, with a big stage, balconies all around, and really cool early 20th century-style detailing. Throughout the show, security was kind of annoying. There was a line of them in front of the stage, which the band seemed to be trying to break through to get to the audience, and there were also security people in the crowd, just standing there, maintaining command presence and pushing people who fell into them while dancing. I also couldn't help but notice that the only black kid in the front was kicked out for dancing exactly like everybody else. Finally, the drinks here are CRAZY expensive. Like $7 for a small cup of Bud Light expensive. The drinks are half the size of ballpark cups and I heard from other people that the $10 mixed drinks were watered down. All in all, I wish the Murder City Devils had played at Paradise or even Middle East Downstairs so I could have maintained my blissful ignorance about this place. read more

This is another review for this place as a venue for live music, not a normal saturday night. I went to see a sold out Rusko show on a thursday night, and despite everything I've read, I got in very quickly and with minimal hassle. The venue itself is clean and seems to be built well in terms of sound. The speakers clearly point toward the center of the dance floor, but in a way it's a blessing because you can step off to the side if you're getting tired and want to take a rest. There were no ridiculous dancers or anything like that, although Im assuming that was because this was a ticketed event and not a regular night. The one thing that makes me not rate this place higher is the cost of the drinks. I didn't think that they were super watered down; after all this is a club, not a bar, but they were overpriced. Also a bottle of a water is FIFTEEN dollars. Yeesh. I don't know if I would go here for a night out, as I know there are better places to do that in Boston, but as a venue for a pretty popular DJ, it wasnt bad at all. read more

yup, i am a fan of the roxy. i saw jamiroquai here a bit ago, BEST CONCERT EVER! that should have been enough to warrant the end of this review, however, my adoring fanbase wants to know more, ok, the two people that actually like reading my crap want to know more, so im going to lay it down for yas. so this was his first show in the states for a long time, not his bad, his last tour started in new york on 9-10-2001, it didnt go very long for the obv reason, but this isnt about jamiroquai, its about the roxy. so anyways, i saw that the place was hosting the man and i bought tickets maybe the first few days they were being sold, maybe 35 each without the crazy charges (but they still tacked them on, just saying the roxy was fairly cheap imo), and worth it for something ive been waiting to see for a long time. so we show up the night of the show, of course its a mob scene everyone wanting tickets, leading me to believe that they could have booked him somewhere a bit bigger, which really would have sucked, this way it was very cool, awesome even. so i was able to bust up to the balcony and get on the rail 25-30 feet from the stage left, it was awesome, i said that, but im saying it again. the sound was spot on, the staff was not visible or bothersome, but did prevent me from bringing the space cowboy from visiting, but anyway. the feel of the roxy is very small, not arena by any means, lots of velvet and reds and wood, very nice venue. on another circumstance i was working and they sent me to the roxy for an event for colleges and music or something like that, it wasnt so great, but what do you expect when your forced to work when everyone around you is getting hammered and not listening to what you have to relay to them, wasnt my idea, i didnt think it was a good one from the start, alas those days are behind me, but i have a sneaking suspicion that they arent too far off. read more

This place is SO much fun. For Boston, the size of this place is very big. There's a balcony around the top looking onto the large dance floor. And if you get there early (10-11pm) you can probably find some kind of seating area. The "dancers" are probably the coolest part of Royale. The have go go dancers and then "trapeze" type artists on a swing who are so entertaining to watch. The cover to get in can be a bit pricey (around $10-$15 on an average night and upwards of $20-$40 on a holiday or event night). I was there for Halloween and neglected to buy the online $20 tickets and upon my arrival found out it would be $40 per person! Definitely buy online if you can. Or if you are traveling in a group, put yourself on the guest list and get in for free! The drinks are a little expensive, however that should be expected. I think I paid $7 on a beer... :( read more

Last night I had the worst experience at any venue I have ever been to in my life. Not to mention, a month earlier I'm positive that the drink I got from the bartender who worked there was drugged and caused me to be in a very unsafe situation. It was a terrifying and traumatizing experience. The spiked drink I got caused me to collapse and was immediately kicked out. Where is the morality in spiking your customer's drinks to then kick them out?? So last night, I came to see a show that was cancelled due to weather issues, but there still was a mediocre DJ to make up for the original DJ Zeds Dead being cancelled. I was essentially harassed by the security guards and treated in a diabolical sub-human way within 15 minutes of me getting there. They gaslit me, purposefully tried to manipulate me and forced me to sit while everyone at the venue was dancing and enjoying the crappy replacement DJ. I will absolutely never return to this pathetic corrupt excuse for an establishment. Don't go here unless you're prepared to have the employees who work here destroy any ounce of happiness that you have. read more

So my friend was celebrating her birthday, and after a classy dinner we headed over to Royale to dance the night away. I honestly had no idea that places like this existed in Boston. You walk in what seems like a historic building, up lovely stairs and surrounded by intricate decor. As you enter the main club space, there are soaring ceilings, and an upper balcony area looking down on the main dance floor and stage. Bar counters are dispersed throughout the venue, allowing quick and easy access to a drink whenever you need it. There appears to be plenty of areas that can be cordoned off for bottle service if you're having a group together for a big night out as well. The music mix kept people dancing, as did the dancing on stage and on podiums at the rear of the club. There was also the odd sight of a person in a giant teddy bear costume who alternated between blowing kisses to the crowd and jumping/ dancing around enthusiastically. At the rear of the dance floor, in the middle of the main venue, there were also two gals who put on a trapeze artist routine of sorts several times throughout the evening. Overall the crowd was a pretty fun one, even if it tended to skew on the slightly skankier side. There were still plenty of fun people there who weren't just all about grinding up on each other. :) This isn't the kind of place I'd be a regular at, but for an alternative to the normal weekend, a solid choice! read more

This review I will admit is slightly biased due to the fact that it was a corporate sponsored event that I was attending at the time. This place is beautifully decorated-it's an old school mansion style feel, with the decor having a Vaudeville feel. It is very classic. There is one large central bar that I noticed and there may have been more, but there wasn't a large presence of bars that I saw. The stupid Boston booze laws again coming to get you-overcrowding the few bartenders they did have. There wasn't even a DJ at this event since it was a "silent disco". Completely not my taste since it was a way for people to disconnect from each other MORE using headphones and it was just an odd experience. Personally I would have just rather had a regular DJ playing. There wasn't even any background music for those of us who didn't want giant headphones on. This made it feel awkward as hell when you're in a club and there's no music on? You expect to feel the floor vibrating underneath you from the speakers and there was none of that. It was a decision made by the sponsoring company but it was still weird. The stage had no performers on it that night so people were allowed to dance up on the stage. It felt odd but I guess it was something that typically doesn't happen if there is a show going on. My understanding is that this place is often more tickets only so you won't have to worry about not getting in with a bouncer, but then again that increases the prices of admission for a night out. It also seriously increases drink prices too. This was an event with 2 "included" drinks and was very early in the night (8 pm on a Friday) so I have no idea how much drinks actually were-but I heard people complaining about "weak, expensive drinks" near me . I am not a Boston native by any means-nor will I be back unless you drag me back by my hair. Here is supposed to be one of the flagship places to go? Maybe, but even though there weren't a ton of spots we hit up in the few days we were in town, this was my least favorite. read more

I wouldn't be caught dead going to the club part of this place though they have some good shows here. There is a lot bad to say about this place. The show area is too small and poorly designed nevermind the slimy neon all over the place. The sound and set up is poor but the absolute worst thing about it is the staff there. The bouncers are morons and would be better off serving as bathroom attendants. I was at a show there and an audience member ran through the crowd hitting and pushing people. The vocalist in the band stopped the show, pointed him out to security and they still didn't do anything. He hit a friend of mine and I grabbed him and threw him out of our way. Security's response? Kick out my friend and the guy that attacked him. Fuck that place. The way Boston is going it needs more rock clubs, not euro trash/tranny bars that put on one good show a year. Stay away. read more

Horrible place to see a concert. They cut the artist short by announcing on the PA system that "the Roxy is now closed". Aka - we have club heads lined up outside who are waiting to be served $10 drinks and our doormen can't take the smell of Dakkar Noir much longer.... With the Webster Theatre opened and a House of Blues on the way, here's hoping that less good bands play this room. read more

I think Royale is a good place to go to in Boston if you want to dance, but I definitely prefer Whisky Saigons. We arrived at 9:50 because the website says the doors open at ten, but nobody was let inside until 10:30. This was annoying because it was cold and raining outside, and didn't follow what was written on the website. The cover was supposed to be $30 but we got in for $15 because we were on a list. The best part about Royale is the set-up of the place itself. There's a large dance floor and balconies overlooking it. I liked that there were couches on the side that anyone could sit on since I've been to various other places where you can only sit down if you're VIP. Drinks are average price. My sex on the beach was $11 and my Corona was $7. I would come again if there were no cover or if it were $10 to get in. Otherwise, I probably won't be back. read more

By chance, when I came here with my friend two weeks ago, we came on a night that Lil Jon was hosting, so that was a pretty fun experience. The drinks are bit pricey... The place looks nice, but its just as grimy as most other clubs.. As always, attracts the wrong people.. A huge fight broke out inside when the bar was closing. The fight was stopped by the bouncers and then as soon as we walked out, the fight turned into a massive moshpit of fighting right in street..
