So here's why this place is gettin' 5 stars: 1) We came for my bf's birthday party with about 15 people and they happily accommodated us on a Friday evening without reservations!! I was a little worried that we'd have problems with such a big party, but the place was amazingly not that busy considering that we came during happy hour and staff was very helpful in putting a bunch of tables together in the back and seating us immediately. 2) The food is AWESOME!! The burger was juicy with just the perfect amount of pink inside, the cheddar cheese was bold and sharp, the bacon was crisp and not too greasy. the bun was grilled and heavily seeded, and it tasted great with the works (which I usually hate)! The fries, homemade chips and chicken fingers also deserve praise too! 3) The prices were unbelievable for the quality of the food. The bacon cheeseburger, which might have been the most expensive item on the menu was only $8.50!! Unreal, considering you're getting one of the best burgers in town. *The only real downside is that this place is quite a walk from the trains, so be ready for a bit of a walk a if you're not cabbing it. I really didn't know what to expect of Royale, but from what I've been hearing and reading, I was expecting a lot out of these burgers. It was a quiet and not crowded night. And I was fine with that, the neon jukebox was spitting out random tunes, we were cracking open bottles of Pork Slap and bottoming up drafts and such. Well, I'm not usually into burgers-and-fries types of restuarants, but I was really pleasantly surprised by this place. The back garden is pretty spacious, which was a happy discovery. The waitress was bubbly and nice, and overall no complaints about the service. My boyfriend loves the burgers here, though I didn't try one. a Bacon Royal with American cheese? Yes please! A perfectly cooked medium, (slightly pink center, cooked outer) the burger was good portion with fresh lettuce, tomato, and onions. As the meat was juicy (& who doesn't like juicy meat?) and flavorful; it wasn't necessary to slather on the ketchup. The onion rings are as great as everyone says they are but can easily be shared with a friend - it's hard to polish off a full side after tucking in such a great burger. I came to Royale on a Sunday for a birthday party. The birthday girl had reserved a table on the back outdoor patio which had access to one large flat screen showing football. I really like the laidback atmosphere of the place - we ended up taking up a lot of space to play Apples to Apples and other boardgames (it was a princess themed party). I also ordered the chicken fingers which come with BBQ sauce and honey mustard. They were strange looking (were the size of actual fingers instead of the large flat pieces you usually see) but very tasty. The breading was very light and the chicken tasted fresh. Their onion rings were also amazing as they were mostly onion rather than breading and HUGE. Oh and the Royale Burger is also sloppy, juicy deliciousness. On the flipside the bloody marys here are TERRIBLE. I ordered one and could barely take more than a sip and then ordered a second one assuming it was a fluke. That one was equally as bad. I recommend going with Bud Light - it never fails me. I would definitely come back to take advantage of the patio again (the waitress was really nice too) to watch football. read more

Went here for a friends bday. It was only 4 of us and it was not busy. Service: you won't be served unless you call/wave them over. Even if you stare them down as they walk by, they won't even give you eye contact. However, once our bartender/waiter came over our table, he was very polite. Food: Mac and cheese - these were okay, but wouldn't order again. Truffle fries and tater tots - perfect, extra crispy but not burnt. First I ordered the Double Royale which is 2 thick pieces of meat; a bit too thick in my opinion and hadn't expected it to be that thick. When it arrived it smelled a bit weird but thought it was just my senses a bit messed up. I decided to take one of the beef patties off bc it was just too large. Took a bite into it and just seemed like the weird taste/smell lingered. And the meat was a bit crumbly like. I'm not very picky with food but I couldn't even eat it after one bite so I asked if I can replace with something else. The guy was nice enough and understanding, so I ordered the fried buttermilk chicken. I love fried chicken but this was not very good either. The chicken was tender but was not crispy at all. And again, seemed like it had this off smell. I started to wonder if it was one of the ingredients in the burger/sandwich. Nonetheless, I took a few bites and just couldn't stomach it. This is definitely one of my favorite places to just eat and chill out with a small group of friends. The place is cozy, laid back, and pretty low key (if you get there early). It tends to get busy at night (starting around 9ish), when people are wondering around the east village for drinks, so I usually avoid the place during those hours. But the place is perfect for lunch and early dinner. My favorite thing about Royale is the outdoor seating in the back. It's like a small beer garden, and is even heated during the winter. Its also really quiet back there because it's not facing the street.. After sitting there for awhile, you might forget you're in NYC! Prices aren't bad either, considering that the burgers are pretty big, and DELICIOUS. To get the ultimate Royale experience, I recommend getting the classic burger, with fries, and your favorite pint of beer. read more

Royale's menu is a selection of different burgers, sandwiches, and finger food and a short but sufficient list of beers and other drinks. Of course, having heard so much about the burger, I ordered the burger with swiss cheese and enjoyed every bite of it. For only $7.50, you get a simple but well-prepared burger topped with cheese--basically, juicy, tasty quality meat sandwiched inside a sesame bun that stays perfectly intact until the very end. Besides feeling the need to take a shower after I finished, I would highly recommend it if you're in the neighborhood. Excellent Royale Burger with cheese tonight - and 5 stars for the Take Out service. On the phone, they told me it would be ready in "8 minutes." And they weren't kidding. I walked there in about 6 minutes...then they took 2 minutes to take my credit card and to give me a free glass of water to wait. Then my food came right out. I live two blocks away, and the whole process took less than 15. One low point was that the onion rings were just put down in a paper bag without any other container. This is a cute little Ave C gem! Went here after a long day of fun with friends. We sat in the back garden, which was super cute and ate burgers and drank cheap mimosas (yes, at 11:30 pm...)
