What an average place, with a nice patio. I hit up Royale for the burgers and fries, which according to many are the best around. I was sorely disappointed with the lack of specialness considering all the hype. The burger is fine, it is a a normal hamburger, I don't know why anyone would rave about it, unless they are used to eating MickeyD's or store bought frozen patties. Like John Travolta in Pulp Fiction I crave the Royale with Cheese (and bacon). Ive been to this joint 3x and its just as good each time! I always order the Royale with Bacon and Cheddar ($8.50) cooked medium with a side of some thin crisp fries. The burger is big and juicy burger with bacon and complimented by a soft and seemingly fresh bug in addition to pickles, lettuce and a juicy tomato slice. Super friendly waitress. The bartender did not seem very professional though and that's probably due to her young age. Has outdoor seating. Burgers are decent. Served on a sesame bun that's thick enough to hold up the juices of the burger. No one wants a soggy bun! The patty itself is pretty juicy but not very beefy tasting. Came in on a Saturday night around 8pm, VERY hungry for a burger (I took a little long to get ready and the GF would turn me into ground beef if I didn't scoot). We didn't have any problems getting seated and it was a nice, lively spot. We both ordered the bacon burger and it was great - huge, juicy, excellent pickles. I ordered with bleu cheese, which ended up masking some of the other flavors, but still good. My gf had it with swiss, I believe, which was much more balanced. The bun did a great job staying together despite the hugeness of everything, so good job bun. Washed it down with a BK Lager and Radeburger as well. Also had the onion rings, but I wasn't a huge fan. It was a light breading, which is fine, except that the rings weren't stiff enough to take a dip in the ketchup. The breading would also just fall off, leaving me holding a piece of onion. great burger. My medium rare bacon chee (American) came juicy and melty, Great portion of meat, bacon and cheese. Cooked correctly, mildly seasoned. Usually I can nitpick food and come up with ways it could be better. For what this burger is, I don't think it can be improved. Fries were thin and crispy and well salted. The place is starting to get crowded, we were there at 830 on a Friday, so be ready for that. We were sitting there for probably and hour and a half and didn't get bothered to leave. The bar is ok, the Burger is GREAT! Definitely a great place to start a night if you haven't eaten and an even better place to grab a burger during halftime on Sunday during football season. They offer I think 4 things on the menu. 2 of them are burgers, 1 is fries and the other is onion rings. I usually get the Royale with cheese and onion rings and my buddy gets the Royale with cheese and fries. The burger is great, even for a thick burger, the onion rings are hard fried, golden and flakey and the french fries are delicious. Like I said, great place to grab a burger and catch some sunday football while you eat. Don't plan on staying though as they only have 2 tvs.. A good place to come to and chill out. They have a heated outdoor patio which was nice. The prices weren't too bad and the food was good. My only problem with this place is that they were not all that cool with us coming in for only drinks and using table service for it. Came here on Tuesday night for a birthday party. The burger is FANTASTIC!!!! Huge portion, big mound of melted blue cheese, nice sesame bun---- ummmm. Our server, bless her heart, was awesome. We had a big group and for some reason the birthday boy was keen on eating on the patio --its freeeezing. While the heat laps helps a bit, I would definitely leave the patio for the summer. Great beers on tap, good pours of the wine--but stick to the beer. The place filled up when we left w/a very NYC school crowd. As for everything else food wise.... stick to the burger with a side of burger. The onion rings sucked, the used to be good, but they tasted like flour. The fries were just ok.... they were salty, but soft. The hot wings, well I know they usually don't serve them and I think they should stick with that MO--they sucked. What looks to be a pretty standard nyc bar (i.e., not super dive-y but definitely not swanky either) serves up a solid burger and beer. I'm not sure which was the bigger temptation not to eat here: that it's all the way on Ave C or that it only received a C health rating. But once inside, I enjoyed the experience. While not the best burger I've ever had, it was delicious and a good balance between grease, meat, cheese and bun. Side of fries was tasty, but I prefer when I don't have to use a fork to eat fries. Outdoor space is small and was full when we go there which was disappointing because it was anise day, but when we were there, which was around 5 on a Friday the crowd inside was very small so it was noisy. I can't believe a place like this can exist in Manhattan. An unassuming restaurant tucked away on Ave C, we came on a Friday night for the cheap happy hour draft beers and the burgers and left happy and satisfied. The place was not crowded at all and we grabbed a table in the outdoor patio in the back. It has just rained and the waitress was nice enough to wipe down the seats and table for us, even though we were probably the only people there. Which is strange, because this place is the bomb-dot-com. Firstly, they have a $3 draft beer happy hour until 7PM. For me, that's unheard of. What a deal. And normally their drafts are $6 anyways. Secondly, they do burgers and they do them pretty well. The burger was pretty juicy. You can order fries and onion rings on the side. The onion rings, which were lightly battered, were especially good. But most importantly, I thought the service was awesome. The waitstaff was friendly, helpful and seemed actually happy to be there. Their friendly vibe contributed to the great atmosphere here that would make you want to come here day in and day out. This is the type of place I'd wish was in my neighborhood-- a great place to hang out with friends while enjoying a beer and burger. I have come here 3 times, all for work parties, and am always slightly disappointed with the food, but happy with everything else. They have a great outdoor space in the back, that is heated in the winter time. Their party options are pretty reasonably priced, with an open bar package that includes bears, house liquor, and wine. Royale is a great all-American pub tucked away in the back of east village. I came through with a group for some beers and a bite. The beer selection is a little on the weaker side but they have a fairly extensive whiskey selection.The beers were decently priced a buck or two cheaper than what you might find elsewhere in East Village. Service was quick and efficient although there weren't too many others in the bar on a Monday night. I ordered the chicken tenders, which turned out to be surprisingly delicious and plentiful for $10. They seemed to be a little skimpy with their bbq and honey mustard sauces though so not sure what was going on there. Overall, nothing to complain or rave about during the experience. read more

A friend specifically recommended Royale for burgers, so I hiked over there on a Sunday afternoon. The burger was fine but not particularly memorable. Veselka, Stand, Rare, and Paul's are all just as good if not better. I also demand a decent beer with my burger (Paul's is a sentimental exception). I live two blocks away from this place and in the years I've been here, have never tried it. I went out for a late lunch with some friends and we felt like burgers and had heard great buzz about this place and went. Now, this is not the greatest burger I have never had. The honor of "Best Burger In NYC" for me goes to Korzo on 7th. That being said, it was a really good burger. It was a "normal" burger in the fact that it didn't have weird stuff on it like rosemary pineapple aioli or something. I was craving something traditional and that's what I got. The proportions of cheese to meat to vegetable to bun was good. It really hit the spot. Also, it was not overpriced. The location is also nice; I've never stopped in because most times it's packed on a Friday night, but we went in on a weekend and were the only people in there. The service was prompt, the food was good and they played nice music (anybody who plays The Black Keys is good in my book). Sure, it was a little loud at points, but not terribly so. Alphabet City is sort of a dry area for good burger places that aren't very expensive. Korzo is great but pricey and I don't have that kind of money for every time I want a burger. Anybody who says that Veselka has a better burger just... does not know burgers, period. read more

Fantastic burger! A friend and I went here on recommendation from a stranger I met in a bar who gave me good burger joints to try. I'm new to New York, so I'm on a mission from God to find the tastiest burger in the 5 Burroughs. Okay - that was a little Blues Brothersish. Regardless, I'm all about trying good burger places. We made the trek from my home base in Brooklyn to Alphabet City and were incredibly pleased by the result. The atmosphere was quaint. We sat at the bar, but there's a pretty nice looking outdoor patio that I'll want to chill at in the Spring. The bartender, whose name escapes me, was incredibly friendly, which is always refreshing to see in New York. On top of that, after seeing my friend's Milwaukee Brewers hat, we got to talking and found out she went to UW-Madison, and having just moved to NY from Madison, it was fun to share Madison stories with her. Very cool girl. The burger was delicious. Quality meat. Perfectly cooked (for me - medium well and still juicy). Good cheese. Good bun. Excellent fries. Good beer selection to boot! Royale is a cozy, friendly little spot for a cold beer and a great burger. The simple menu is dominated by the specialties of the house, which are the Royale Burger, the Royale with Cheese and the Bacon Royale. All are very good, as are the fries and onion rings. Sometimes I see the little "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" next to my 5-star rating and think "eh, it's not THAT good." But not here. This place IS as good as it gets. Royale is the best, most delicious, juiciest burger I've ever had. The first time I came here I bit into my giant burger and about two ounces of juiciness went shooting down my arm and onto the patio floor. It was worth the napkins wiping it up, I assure you. Prices are meh; I've had better values in the wide world of burgers before, and in my opinion their liquor is only worth it during happy hour or special offers. Still, the burgers. My girlfriend loved the Veggie burger and had no room for onion rings huge burgers yummy buns:) I had the Royale burger asked for it medium rare it came well done so this is why I'm giving it 4 stars out of 5 stars the well done burger had been seared the same both sides so the person cooking did a good job making the burger they just did not get my request I would of loved to have that bloody juice in my first bite running down my chin. I stopped in last night for a bite after getting a drink at Cafecito down the street. Such a good idea. Once you get in past the frosted glass doors and windows, it's a nice little bar with tables lined across from it. There is outside garden/deck seating that I did not check out, but will when summer finally gets here and stays put. The burger is amazing. This is one of the few times I've ordered a burger medium rare and had it be... medium rare. I had the royale with cheese and loved every bite. What's surprisingly good is the sesame bun. It's just soft enough without feeling like mushy wonder bread. It was sturdy enough to sop up the juices. I ordered the onion rings, while my bf had the fries. Good sides, nothing spectacular, but fresh tasting and good. (fries look hand/fresh cut). I was totally satisfied with my meal. Onion Rings were everything an onion ring should be plump, juicy and greasy in a good way. They reheat very well the next day too. Fries were equally as good although they must be eaten immediately and they do not reheat well. We also tried the burger it was huge and perfectly seasoned with sauteed onions. The beef used was very fresh. We would revisit especially for the onion rings. read more
