Roys Country Corral is located right off of NC-74 and I-95. It was fairly good food, but was undoubtedly an experience! When we pulled in, we quickly found out that this is not your typical restaurant establishment. It is located in what seems to used to be a shed, which stirred the thought in my mind that we shouldn't be eating here. But, my dad was committed and determined to try it out, and I followed along. When I walked in, I felt that I was in the 80s (hence the lone TV in the corner playing movies via VHS tapes). You can sit wherever you would like, and are given a short menu. We both got sweet teas, which I thought had a weak flavor, but my dad liked. Our server was the waitress, food runner, cashier, hostess, and everything in between. Despite this, she did a pretty great job at keeping everyone satisfied. I ordered the flounder plate, while my dad ordered the dark meat chicken plate. All plates come with fries, coleslaw, hush puppies, and a Kings Hawaiian roll. My flounder was mostly good, although one piece had a metallic taste. I requested 1 flounder, but they gave me three! How generous. My dads chicken was better than my flounder. The hush puppies are ok in my opinion (good, but not the best), I don't like coleslaw so I didn't try any, and the fries are very greasy but are good. The customers are either travelers off of the highway or interstate or are country locals. There were good people, laughs, and vibes going on at the country corral. I do think that the food could improve a bit, but because of the value for the amount of food you get, the people, the customer service, and the experience, Roys gets a 4/5 instead of a 3/5. read more

This tobacco barn is full of magic! We stopped in on our to Wilmington and were very pleased. I highly recommend the catfish and bbq combo. The crunch on the catfish is perfection and the smoke on the bbq is delicious. The owner makes his own sauce and it's yummy! The burger was moist and fries were good. My husband and I tried this place last week. Upon arrival we came in and nobody knew we were there. It was like 15 minutes after they opened so no biggie but we awkwardly stood there for 5ish minutes. Our waiter was an angel. She was very sweet, answered all our questions about the menus, and waitered while helping in the kitchen. Our food was pretty good. I got 2 pieces of catfish, side of fries, and a tea. My husband got the 2 catfish meal (no slaw) with a side of shrimp, and a water. Our total was somehow over $40 which I thought was a little steep bc we can go somewhere like Texas Roadhouse and spend $30-$35. The sweet tea was pretty good. Also back by the bathroom be careful as there's soft spots in the floor. The restaurant was very dusty but the tables seemed clean. Lots of cool Knick knacks around the restaurant. This was not whole hog smoked over hardwoods. I'm not sure any of it was smoked at all, the pork offered no flavor. The fries were undercooked and not seasoned. Seriously, they messed up frozen French fries. Coleslaw tasted like it was purchased in 5 gallon buckets, I really wanted to like this place with its eclectic interior and large Lumbee presence but woo, it really missed the mark. read more

First time at Roy's. We came in, other patrons outside were friendly, staff is friendly and waiting on the food. You might need to GPS this one, it's out here n the middle of nowhere (in the middle of nowheresssss) The atmosphere is friendly and a cozy, laid back well lit environment. If you want to watch tv while u eat, sit with your back to the kitchen. My daughter was watching them catch alligators on the tv. This place was just amazing. Great little find right off the road, hole in the wall with a lot of history and family run. BBQ plates were thick with good food and the sauce made on site. You want authentic BBQ, then you come to Roy's. This is like going to his house and letting him cook the meal for you. And he does. Roy and his team (including some of his children) will help you, serve you, and provide you with the meal you request. And at a very low price. We hear of Roy's and decided to go for a visit. This is not on a main road. You have to take the back roads to get to his place and pull up the drive. There is his log cabin type establishment where they cook and serve. His smoke oven is in the back where he cooks the hog once a week. It takes a full day to make and he will serve on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Besides the hog he will have chicken, burgers, cat fish, and a combination of items to go with it all. This is the style that Roy makes. So it is not like what you would find in a fancy restaurant. This is authentic and what his style is about. The smoked hog is moist and fresh and walls off the fork. It is a bit spicy but excellent and special as you take a bite. It does come with fries and coleslaw and the right amount of dips you might want to have. Once you start you just eat. Besides the hog we did have fried chicken. This was fresh chicken made this morning. It was very fresh. And simple. The right amount of salt and pepper as it was fried for you, and at your request. The team puts it all together for you. Again, the price is right. They also have something to drink with it. But one of the best things is sitting and waiting for your meal as you talk to Roy. He is wonderful when you are there. Informed that there was no BBQ, chicken, pork, beef. Other menu items looked good so we stayed. After 1hr after seated orders taken & drinks served. We socialized with our family, no concerns. 1.5hrs, No waitress returns, no refills. A member of our group sought out our waitress to ask about progress. Stopped here off the highway for something to eat & let me just say this was the most authentic BBQ place. The eastern BBQ sauce & the Smokey flavor was insanely delicious. I got the regular BBQ plate and it comes with hush puppies, fries, and cold slaw. Everything was fantastic including the service. We stop in Lumberton, NC on our way to Florida from NY. We found Roy's in April 2022 we enjoyed the food, ambiance, the staff and the local folks. We ate here in 2023 and 2024. The food is delicious and prepared fresh and served hot. We usually get combo plates: chicken and pulled pork for my husband and fried chicken and shrimp for me. The food is fun and we enjoy this little corner of North Carolina farm country and real folks. This is what I love about traveling by car in our country. The decor here wasn't gathered for ambiance, it never left. My meal started off with pulled pork: moist and tender with a predominant porky-ness flavor. Added on was the best Eastern Carolina-style sauce I've ever had: the peppery and vinegary tang complimented the meat without overpowering it. The white slaw was neither too creamy nor too watery - just right, with a unique sprinkling of dill pickle relish mixed in. Finally, the hush puppies. Bite-sized golden orbs, not the least bit dry or greasy - heavenly. My sweet waitress said that customers order them by the dozen.
