I've stopped at Smithfield's once before years ago and didn't particularly like the chopped sandwich, apparently because of the use of white slaw. I have to admit being a native NC resident from Lexington, so I have a stubborn bias. I didn't try very hard ever to like Eastern NC BBQ and have discovered it is the fault solely of the white slaw! Sunday the 17th I stopped in Lumberton and bought a chopped sandwich with the slaw on the side, order number 110 at 12:21. The slaw on it's own merit was tasty. I don't have a weird bias against white slaw, but it belongs with seafood only! such as paired with a platter of fried shrimp and oysters, maybe flounder too! So I still had a nice hot sandwich of BBQ pork chopped with no slaw, (red slaw is acceptable and preferred as a matter of fact) riding down the highway on the way home. Let me tell you I was impressed, pleased, happy, and converted! I am now a believer in Eastern NC BBQ. Now, I still prefer Lexington, (or sometimes called Western NC style) but I can say as long as that white slaw is left off then I am good to go and up for a sandwich of Eastern style. It had the slightly vinegar taste I expected, some decent smoke flavor, and a nice bit of peppery taste. My only complaint is the price was pretty steep at almost $7 with tax for a BBQ sandwich. I guess they're still close to $6 in my area, so inflation is what we're living with. But now I'm converted. Thanks Smithfield. read more

Service was great even for a counter service type restaurant. They still bring out your meal and walk around and offer refills. Had the combo platter bbq was ok on flavor, chicken was very good as we're the hush puppies. That being said I don't think this particular location in Lumberton got the message on how to make a pork and coleslaw sandwich. We stopped by for a late lunch on Saturday. It was not busy and we were greeted by the person taking our order. We ordered the regular bbq plate with coleslaw and potato salad and a chicken and bbq plate with french fries and bbq beans. The bbq was good, i really like the vinegar sauce. The fried chicken was also good. We also liked the coleslaw and bbq beans not fans of the thin french fries (floppy and not crispy) or potato salad (unusual texture and not what we expected). As we were traveling to North Carolina from South Carolina we needed to stop for lunch. I saw one of the exit signs for Smithfield's. I immediately told my husband we had to go. I remember going to Smithfield's when I was younger growing up in North Carolina. My husband is born and raised in South Carolina. I needed to introduce him to North Carolina BBQ! I have been complaining about service at this Lumberton, NC location for some time locally to manager, area manager and calling the owner's, Bullard Restaurants in Raleigh, NC. The owners didn't even have the professionalism or concern to call me back. I guess that makes this all understandable because if the owners at the top don't care, why should anyone else. I tried to speak with the ones in authority before going on Yelp, but they didn't seem to care. They seem to ALWAYS get the order wrong and when you call to complain, it seems to be your fault. When I use my hard-earned money, I would like to receive what I order, NOT what they want me to have. I LOVE their BBQ & chicken tenders, but after complaining on all different levels and NO CONCERN, I think I am done. To tell you how great the service and employees are, we got a hot dog once from there and received only half of the bun. The food is GREAT if they get your order correct. So while traveling down 95 in N Carolina you gotta stop for BBQ. Its a must. Not having alot of time to spare. I searched for a BBQ place with a drive thru close to the highway. Smithfields seemed to fit all the necessary criteria. We drove up. Placed our order and within a few minutes we were back on the road. The pulled pork really hit the spot, Tasty! The cole slaw side and potato salad are also very tasty. The fries were a big disappointment. Freezer quality and poorly cooked. The lemonade was very nice. Not overpowering and just sweet enough. Amazing experience! Came here at open, stopping by on our drive to Tampa for a cruise. Great experience with food and customer service. Chicken tenders are super large and 3 may not sound like a lot, but when you see it, it is enough by themselves. Very tender. Sauces that we tried: barbeque and honey mustard were great. We only stopped here to pick up some barbecue for a friend but we're a little hungry so we decided to get two chicken plates for lunch.
