Any company that pulls off a job before starting because they forgot to brings tarps (a request made at time of scheduling - which was a 3 week wait - and this client was not told that the request for tarps was too demanding at time of scheduling) simply defies description and should not even receive one star. I was hesitant to call Roy's after some of these reviews, even though some seem pretty ridiculous and they are old. I needed help with my sewer and out of the 3 places I called locally, Roy's was the only one who could help within 24 hours. Seriously had other companies tell me 4-5 days at double and triple the price that Roy's quoted me. Kevin from Roy's came out, he looked like a normal blue collar working man, not a "stalkarazzi" like some "elite yelper" complained about. As a new homeowner and not knowing much about sewers, I told him what I thought the issues were, and what might be wrong. He listened to me, but said he thought the problem was somewhere else on my line. To make me happy, he used his camera tool to check where I thought the problem was, and he was right, the area I thought was giving me trouble was totally fine. He then televised the rest of my line and located the problem, but before all of that, Kevin asked if I had a digital camera memory card, so he could record the footage onto it. I did, and was able to keep the video for my records. My house was built in the '70s, and I was worried the pipes might be fragile so he used a small "snake" (the device that cleans the line) then proceed to use 2 additional sizes to loosen the gunk up slowly because the issue was bad (previous owner apparently poured grease down the lines.) All of this took around an hour, he explained everything he was doing, educating me in the process, we told jokes, exchanged stories and had some good laughs. I would recommend Roy's to any of my friends and family. I had a great experience using them. Maybe these other reviews are from people who don't interact well with others? read more

Of course our sewer backed up on a holiday! Called President's Day morning and spoke to a lady who was quite sweet, cheery and helpful. She said someone would be out after 1 p.m. (I called at a about 11 a.m.). She made sure I understood the price was $40 more than usual which for us, with sewage spewing out in our front yard was a good deal. Tim arrived here at 12:15 p.m. which was great because it gave us back an hour on this beautiful (74 here in Novato) day! He cleared the block within 4 minutes of starting, kept going all the way out to the street and was finished up before 1 p.m. Tim was friendly and professional. Thanks Roy's, you always have been 'right there' for us!! This is about the 10th time in 35 years we've used your services and the only reason we may not have is because you were already booked up so I may have had to go elsewhere. Bad review. To their credit they came the day called and did not charge me for the 2 guys the dispatcher insisted I have. But after they left I realized the seal on the toilet had not been replaced which is where the water was pouring out of. I called the company and the woman who answered was argumentative, said she would speak to a plumber and get back to me. She did not. I called back 2 days later. She gave me the same run around. I asked if she was a plumber. She is not. I asked who the owner of the company is. She refused to tell me. I called back and she said she had to many calls to answer my question. Had a problem free outcome to a mess that popped up on the radar just this morning. Ended up making 5-6 calls with no one able to help me today except for Roy's. Their great service started with the initial phone call to a prompt call back with assurances that they would get to me today and they did. Aaron provided efficient, friendly service. My house was built in 1916 and it is plumbing challenged. Over the years we have worked with a number of plumbers fixing the numerous problems. Most of the challenges have been pipe clogs caused by roots and/or rough transitions in the system. We've worked w/ Roy's technicians (three different people) at least 5 times in the last 5 years. My kitchen sink backed up on a Friday afternoon of all times. I tried drain opener, but no luck. It was 3:45pm and I took a chance and called Roy's as I used them many many years ago. A nice lady answered the phone and I asked if anyone was still working. ( I actually expected to be laughed at) She asked where I was, put me on hold, and informed me that Tim would be there in 15 minutes. I couldn't believe my luck. Tim arrived, assessed the situation, cleared out the entire line in less than 30 minutes. He even gave me instructions on how to keep grease from building back up. I had this company to my home to clear a clogged drain in the second story of the house. It was a weekend so I paid 180 bucks for this service. The shower in the lower level had absolutely NO PROBLEM before they came to clear the clog on the second story. Next day I took a shower downstairs the shower pan filled up immediately and when I called them to report what happened the rude woman on the phone at Roy;s said "I know what you are IMPLYING but we are not responsible for that problem as it CANNOT have anything to do with our service" She told me someone would call me to talk to me which, of course NEVER HAPPENED. I would not recommend them to anyone since they were only happy to take my money but not offer either satisfaction or the courtesy of a phone call as promised. Roy's plumbing came out for me and did a great job. The previous reviews really scared me, but someone referred Roy's to me for clogged drains. I told the person who answered the phones regarding the bad reviews and she told me that guy was fired. My guys who came to my home, were with in an hour of calling, Roy's sent out Jason and Joe. They were friendly, professional, neat and did a great job! They were here for one hour. Not only did they clean my clogged downstairs drain, they also fixed the water pressure in my sink, reset my garbage disposal and cleaned my upstairs bathroom drains with the extra time they had. I appreciated this because Roys charges you for a minimum of one hour anyways and I felt really good about writing a check for their services. I would highly recommend Roy's Sewer Service. read more

I have NEVER been motivated to submit a review on Yelp - until now! We try to support local small businesses. We have been using Roy's Sewer Service for 18 years on two homes we own in Marin. One is an older home that requires a clean-out every 6 months. The other home has new pipes and has not required the same routine maintenance. The home with the newer pipes (less than 5 years) recently backed up so I immediately called Roy's. They were quick to respond (as usual) sending out someone the next day. We were told that he found toilet paper blockage. We paid in full at the time of service. Less than 48 hours later - our sewer line was backing up AGAIN. We immediately called Roy's but it was 2pm the afternoon of Halloween and no one was picking up. After leaving 3 messages, we were forced to call another company who sent out someone out to fix the problem at an additional after-hours cost of $288. The next day, we finally reached Wendy at Roy's who claimed to be the manager. We informed her of the situation expecting Roy's would stand behind their work - they DID NOT! She was extremely rude - stating that we likely used too much toilet paper, our pipes are too old (the pipes are less than 5 years old), suggested we change the brand of toilet paper we use, stated they offer NO guarantees. Becoming more and more frustrated with the conversation I asked if I could speak to the manager. She stated, "I am the manager", and hung up! I called back and asked for the owners name and number and she hung up on me again. November 5th, I called one more time and spoke with a women named Nicole. I explain to her what had happened and she said, I would have to resolve it with Wendy. I asked for the owner and she said, she would have him call me back. He never did and I don't think he ever received the message. I would expect that after 18 years of faithful business support - Roy's would stand behind their work. It saddens me! If I was the owner of this company I would not employee Wendy. We will never use Roy's Sewer Service again. Greg read more

Great service! Needed a vertical line to the sewer cleared as we had a blockage and the house could not use any fixtures or toilets without major overflow (gross!). We called the night before and they arrived on site the next day on time, cleared the line, did some other checks, and the price was very fair. I felt a level of trust as they worked very hard to resolve the problem, ask questions to avoid future issues and then they were off without trying to find other angles for charges. I had two experiences with Roy's sewer service. The first involved snaking my kitchen drain. The job was fine. Recently I had toilets not flushing and shower drains backed up (feces in my showers). Two men appear at my home at $150/hr per man. I was notified of this cost. I was not happy about the price, but I was desperate. After seeing what was involved in snaking the drain, one man probably could have done this job. If he needed assistance, the work the second man performed, involved very little work or skill. The rate for the second man should not have been more than $30/hr. My major complaint is the men took no precautions to keep my house clean until I requested they wear booties. I did not realize I would also have to request they keep the area free of feces. My toilet was removed, snake inserted and withdrawn from the hole many times for at least ten minutes. Each time feces flew around the area: the wall behind the toilet, the shower enclosure, the cabinet, some reached my light switch. The workers did not take enough precautions to keep the work area clean. Only a drop cloth was laid on part of the floor. Plastic should have been used to keep the entire area clean. They had no cleaning supplies with them to sanitize the area. I asked if they did and the answer was no. I handed them Lysol wipes. They used a few, but not enough. I ended up having to clean the areas I mentioned earlier. However, once the toilet was rehung, the feces was very difficult to clean behind the toilet. One other unsanitary condition still existed, I do not remember them wearing gloves. I wonder if they washed their hands after the job was done. My guess is, that is how the light switch got the feces on it. The good news was 1. the toilet & shower drains were cleaned out. 2. They did come when they promised they would. The bad news was the area was not sanitary when they left. The job cost $600, more than I think the job should have cost. They did have difficulty finding a clean out on the property, because there was no clean out. This job took a few extra steps, but it still was not worth $600. Thanks to Roy I will be hiring a plumber to install a clean out. I hope Roy will learn to keep the area sanitary so I could give them a 5 star rating. I would not be surprised if the next reviewer will be Roy (the company) explaining what is involved with servicing sewers . Harley's mom read more

We have been using Roy's for at least 40 years, since we moved to Novato. They have always been excellent: Prompt, friendly, creative, and willing to go the extra mile. Last night two trucks showed up at 4:30, in response to a septic tank failure, and those guys worked fast and hard -- and cheerfully -- to try to solve the problem and get us up and running. As it turned out, they could not provide the construction that the system needs, but they did everything they could, and were a pleasure to work with. I dealt with a plumbing issue. When flushing the toilet the water would clog and pour out of the shower. Called a plumber who told me I needed to find a sewage company since they specialize in these kinds of things. I called Roy's in the morning, and they were able to come in the afternoon that day. They couldn't give me an exact time though, but they did call when they got there. One hour and $300 later, everything was done. They had the situation cleared up and they were on their way. They took all the stress out of trying to fix it myself, and I will definitely call them again if this ever happens again. Reading the other reviews, it seems that this can't be the same company. Roy's did a commercial sewerage system cleanout and inspection in Vallejo for me. They arrived on time with extremely well maintained modern high-tech equipment. Not sure how places like this stay in business. We hired them to camera a sewer lateral and pump a septic tank. We spoke to someone on the phone who quoted approx. $350 to camera and approx. $450 to pump the tank. When I got the bill it was $750 for the pumping. I called to ask if there was something that happened on-site that would have made the price go up, and the lady I spoke with went from 0-60 in no time. At first she suggested that I call the guy back with whom we spoke originally. Then suggested that I "misunderstood" and that pumping is "NEVER" in the $450 range. I said that was exactly why I was calling to because I think I am missing something since the bill didn't match the verbal quote. She became belligerent and had another woman screaming in the background as well. The nail in the coffin for the conversation was when she "didn't care that I FELT it should be cheaper to pump, ummmmmmmm well I "feel" that way because it was quoted that way. I again tried to explain that maybe there was a circumstance on site that created a condition that required a higher price to be charged, but she kept insulting me, and insisting that "I didn't understand". Well no, I don't understand! I don't understand how places like this are even in business or why this woman is in charge of answering the phone and customer service. read more

Roys did arrive on time but their equipment broke and they could not get it out of the drain. At $300 per hour per person, this added up quickly as they spent a lot of time thinking about ways to get their broken equipment out of our drain. The work was finally finished the next day but unfortunately, when the van arrived the first day, the driver did not pay much attention to my fence post or the edge of the road and almost rolled the van down the hill and managed to back into my carport fence. It could have been worse if my neighbor and I did not yell loud enough to stop the van before any more damage was caused. Now the fun part, the bill came and there was NO responsibility taken for my damaged property. Attempts to come to an agreement only led to them telling me they were going to send me to collections. This is unfortunate since the technicians on site did manage to get their work done and were polite and apologetic for damaging said property. read more

On Sunday I could smell a sewage odor in the bathroom I had just renovated in the law office in my rental property in San Rafael. I called Roy's at 7 a.m. on Monday morning thinking I would get a voice mail that would tell me what the operating hours were. Instead I spoke to a very nice woman who said she would call me back before Noon to let me know when someone could come to take care of the problem. At 8 a.m. she called back to tell me that Jason and his trainee were on their way from Novato. I had terrible traffic getting to San Rafael (I live in Novato) and met them at the building. Not only did Jason allay my fears that something terrible was wrong but gave me a quick lesson in how to maintain my drain in the shower and then had his trainee check the entire drainage system out to the curb while he showed me how the system works. I was very, very impressed with Jason and his trainee (whose name I didn't catch) and cannot praise them, their professionalism, their caring attitude and obvious expertise enough. Jason of Roy's Sewer Service just left the house a few minutes ago. Second time he was here today. During the first visit this morning he did the unthinkable. Instead of recommending the most lucrative solution (bringing his crew and 400 pound machinery into the house after covering the walls and floors to prevent damage, removing the toilet, then cleaning the drain), he recommended that i bring in a plumber to install a clean-out valve to the outside. The plumber he recommended arrived in a couple hours. Together we discovered the location of an existing clean-out valve hidden in an access hatch, and he charged me nothing because of the longstanding relationship he has with Roy's Sewer Service. Within an hour of my call to Roy's Sewer Service to tell them that a clean-out valve had been discovered, Jason was back at the house, did the work (unplugging 3 toilets and 3 shower/tubs) in less than a half hour. Very professional. No nonsense. Surprisingly inexpensive. Amazingly responsive. Best service call I have experienced in years! read more
