Read all the rave reviews but honestly didn't know what to expect. I got the tostada suprema which sounded delicious in the description. But it was basically a taco salad from Taco Bell. Even the meat tasted like it. I don't know.. the ambiance was fantastic definitely as we were seated upstairs and they had a band going on, but the food was a slight miss.

The best service. Great food and cold drinks. Make your way upstairs and enjoy the cooler breeze. I think this is a great place for a late or midday snack.

This place is amazing. A little off the main strip of the island, so it wasn't overly crowded. Service was impeccable and you can tell they really put care into the food they are serving. The Langosta Eggs Benedict with Pablano Hollandaise was exceptional, I'll be thinking about it for a long time. We also tried some of their tacos, and huevos ranchers, everything was a hit here. Highly recommend this establishment.

Good food and atmosphere! We sat on the second floor. It is colorfully decorated and a has a great open air area. I had the waffle with fresh fruit. It was very good! My husband had crunchy tacos and they were nicely done too. We were served quickly and attentively. We would go there again!

Don't pass this place by. It isn't anything to look out from the outside. Pastel colored building with paper signs scattered on the walls . They have all fresh Mexican offerings from Tortas, quesadilla, enchiladas, tacos , fresh fish, and tostados and much more. We had a party of 7, 5 adults and 2 kids. They were very accommodating moving tables to allow us to sit together. We had the mole enchiladas x3 , 1 chimichanga, ground beef tacos , quesadilla with shrimp , and one quesadilla with chicken. All the food arrived to the table hot. Lots of fresh ingredients and tasted great. We enjoyed our meal here and were pleasantly surprised by the freshness. All in was 78.00 this included food and tip. Great stop overall . It is in the center of town but further up than most people venture. Definitely a must try if your looking for authentic and fresh. This restaurant is cash only so bring your pesos .

Came to Mexico for vacation. It's a busy island with lots of options but we wanted to eat grilled lobsters. It did not disappoint. Super fresh and delicious. Everything came out fast. Our server Pablo was so attentive and friendly. The location is only a few minutes walk from the docks. There's no ocean views but your on an island so it's beautiful everywhere you eat. I would definitely recommend the lobster here.

This was our first time eating at Ruben's. We were told 10 years ago that this was the spot however we never made time to try it. Super glad that we did this time around. The waiters are the best. Great food at a reasonable price. Good coffee as well if that's your thing. read more

Stopped in Ruben's Restaurant for breakfast one morning. Ruben was there to greet us as we walked in and took us to a table he had outside. He then took our drink orders and brought them back; meanwhile he had a server come and take our order. Service was friendly all around and super fast. I had a traditional breakfast with eggs and chorizo and it did not disappoint. It was cooked perfectly. read more

We were introduced to this little gem on Isla Mujeres while attending a friend's wedding in June of 2017. We had the reception dinner there. We were a party 30+, and this place has seats for maybe 15-20 people. They brought in extra tables, chairs and staff to handle our crowd. Despite what must have been a difficult night, neither the food, drink or service suffered. Today, we decided to visit the island for a change from our all inclusive on the mainland. After spending the day exploring, swimming and enjoying the beautiful weather, we found ourselves with a little extra time before our return ferry. We decided to visit this little gem and have a bite. Once again, we were not disappointed. I ordered the pescado al a veracruzana. The fish was perfectly cooked and light the tomato sauce was zesty and flavorful. It was accompanied by some of the freshest refried beans I have ever had as well as rice and warm, hand made corn tortillas. Dana had the enchiladas suissa (sp?). The enchiladas were stuffed with yummy chicken and cheese and the sauce was creamy and slightly tart, right on the money. We both had Cokes with our meal and the tab in US was only $12! Amazing! Lastly our waiter Sammy was polite, funny and personable. He even remembered us from our previous visit. Be advised, as I said, Ruben's is tiny, and not in the touristy part of town, but don't be fooled. These folks are putting down some excellent fare, have great staff and will save you a ton of dough over many other spots. read more

Loved this local spot!! I ordered the supreme burrito and the portions were plenty big especially for the cheap price. I also ordered the mojito which was delicious and it happened to be happy hour so all drinks were but 1 get 1 for 100 pesos! Highly recommend, great local spot and the staff were super friendly. There was live music during happy hour was really fun and the singer was very talented. Already want to go back! read more

Quality of the food was top notch. The homemade salsas they brought out we're out of this world. If I could buy them by the bottle my suitcase would of been full. Was a nice change of pace from eating at the resort. Staff was friendly as well. If I'm ever with in 30 minutes of this place I'll be back. read more

Good here was ok, a little touristy for my taste. Ordered tacos for breakfast asked for harina but received maize, no biggy but the tortillas were literally out of a bag, not toasted cooked or heated really. We sat outside and of course it was hot, expected that and the service was marginal. Disappointed since our friends suggested it and had a great experience. Maybe I'll try again next time but not a priority. read more

We originally wanted to eat at Abuelo's, however they were closed. Yelp said they opened at noon, but their sign said 5pm. We had met someone on our snorkeling trip, who said she liked Ruben's and did we want to eat there with her. We said Yes and we're glad we did. I've eaten here at least 7x this was the moteluno. Fried tortilla with eggs and sauce. The service is wonderful. Jalissa is my favorite! The fruit plate is huge and filling. Lots of vegetarian options. Great salad. Just ask for oil and balsamic. Veggie tostadas were pretty big. Beans are some of the best on the island! Go now! read more

Came here for the awesome reviews. What a disappointment. Ordered a steak burrito and gave us some sort of pork looking meat. My.husband questioned it and they swore up and down that it was beef. My husband than asked to see the meat and he brought out a quart sized plastic jug with meat chunks and red sauce to show is it was in fact beef... it looked like cut pork. That was the worst thing he could have done. It was gross. Wish I had the guts to pull my phone to take a picture of it! Rueben came to our table and said we ate it but it was inedible. 3 questionable bites and our group was done. He was rude and offended that we questioned the beef. Smug and no customer service. Beware to anyone who has ever eaten a proper burrito! read more

Wow! Great quality food and service. Albert was our server on the rooftop. He was extremely helpful in his menu suggestions. We ordered lobster enchiladas and shrimp tacos. Both were fresh, flavorful and reasonably priced. Reuben was kind enough to include red and green sauce for the enchiladas. Divine! The restaurant is located near North beach but not on a Main Street so service much better and less crowded. Alberto makes delicious Pain Killer cocktail. The balance of coconut and light rum and pineapple and orange juices is fantastic. read more

I'm writing this while eating breakfast here for my 3rd day in a row. First, fantastic attentive service! The food is authentic, clean, and local prices, not tourist prices like along the strip. An omlete which comes w/ a side of rice, black beans and tortias, and will range from $65 peso (veggie) to $90 peso (shrimp), therefore $3.15 to $4.35 usd for breakfast. Love love love this place. Went there for brunch and there was nothing to not love. Server was nice, made good recommendations, service was fast and friendly, not too expensive and food was put of the world. Their tortillas were freshly made, nice and warm, their hot sauces were also very fresh, not like packaged bottles and tasted great. Egg scrambled was my favorite. Outdoor seating was great. This little place is an absolute secret gem hidden just slighter further away from the main restaurant area on Isla. We came here multiple times throughout our short vacation and were delighted each time. The servers are sweet and awesome people who made our experience even better, and the food was just WOW!! I am a retired male widower with more than enough resources to fund a meal at many high end restaurants, including Rubens. I stood at the door thru several eye contacts with the staff. Why they did not want me there is still a mystery. I soon got a feeling I have not experienced before. THEY WERE NOT GOING TO ACKNOWLEDGE MY PRESENCE SO I WOULD LEAVE. The courteous thing to do would be to approach and say Hey, we don't like your goatee, or we don't like your long hair, or we cannot seat a solo, or we have a big reservation coming and we need to focus on them. I would have smiled, accepted the excuse and left. It was rude and unnecessary to just ignore me until I "GOT THE MESSAGE". read more

THIS PLACE IS AWESOME. go here. Go here multiple times. It's an awesome little restaurant that's family run that we went to both mornings we were on isla. I got the fish chimichanga and the green enchiladas, and my friend had the fish tacos and the fish chimichanga. Everything was delicious, fresh and home made. Definitely recommend the fruit water, I had papaya which was so refreshing, and the horchata. Prices are SO GOOD. And free WiFi! What more could you want read more

Nice place in a quiet neighborhood. Cheap beer : 5 for $120 pesos. Guac there was the best that we had throughout the trip - as big foodies , we always scout for good food on our trips. Gotta try the chilli oil sauce, rich in flavor and not too spicy. Wish I could buy Suh sauce back in U.S. My friend ordered ground beef and she couldn't stop talking abt how good it is. Ceviche of fish was nice too. Anyway, u can't go wrong with this place read more

Oh me oh my. This place!!! My boyfriend and I stayed in isla for 4 days and ate here 3 of the 4 days. It was seriously that good. And the prices were great! We had the fish burrito, lobster burrito, huevos a la mexicana, enchiladas con mariscos and a couple others. All were just delicious. We will be back in 3-4 years! read more

Wow. What can i say. My last night on the island and i found this gem!! Wish i would've come here the first night! Cheap food. Excellent fantastic service! Ruben the owner runs around checking on all his patrons! The Jambalaya is the most amazing dish i have ever had in my life!! You have to absolutely come to this wonderful restaurant if you ever visit Isla Mujares and get the Jambalaya. You wont regret it!!! read more

Love love here. First Ruben is super great guy and supports the orphans on the island ! My first upstanding guy I've met here. His food is delicious. The portions are super sized. I love the lobster eggs Benedict and the tostada with chicken. Really it is a chicken taco salad in the big fried shell. If you want real authentic Mexican food with a great price and with great staff, Ruben's is the place!!! Ruben himself works in there and is awesome!!! There are A LOT OF RAVE REVIEWS of this place, so I decided to check it out while on Isla. I can see why lots of travelers visiting like the place - the prices are cheap, with everything on the menu less than $10, the portions are large, the outdoor patio space is inviting and the staff very friendly. We ordered the chicken chimichanga, the chicken burrito with half red sauce, half green sauce, and the pitcher of mango water. The pitcher of mango water is a deal - plenty to share and the cost of 2 glasses of juice if ordered separately. The chimichanga and burritos were ENORMOUS, taking up the entire plate and spread with a generous serving of fresh guac on top. The red sauce was a little too tomato-based and spaghetti-sauce-like for our tastes, but the green sauce was the perfect level of spice. The chimichange was lacking in chicken, mostly filled with beans and rice. It was a little dry without a sauce served alongside it. You can ask for extra spicy sauce and they will bring you a small dish of habanero based sauce. BEWARE - SUPER SPICY but delicious in small quantities. Overall, Ruben's is charming enough and off the beaten Isla path of the main drag. The food is about on par with Chipotle, at about the same prices, but with nicer ambiance and in a major tourist area. It was an okay dining experience on Isla, but the hype is overrated! read more

This is my favorite place to eat on Isla. I am a vegetarian. The big vegetable burrito with the green sauce is amazing. Ruben's homemade hot sauce is great. The staff is fast and efficient. You can eat inside or outside. I play guitar there every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in January and February with vocalist Jill Jensen. This will be our third year working there. This little hole in the wall has the best coffee on the island and some tasty baked goods in the banana bread kind of genre. Grabbing a morning cappuccino there is always a highlight of my day.

Aug 2016 - Ruben's was a great find on Isla Mujeres! Great food and service at a very fair price. Our family really enjoyed everything we ordered and they went out of their way to help us with our vegetarian choices and yes some special made to order requests. We met Ruben while there and he was an amazing host and treated us like extended family. If you don't see it on the menu, just ask and Ruben's will take great care of you! read more
