Walked up here from the south side on a day electricity was out all day. Glad to find a restaurant with power. We sat outside, ordered waters/sodas/beer. Good variety on the menu. I ordered the ceviche de pulpo -- absolutely fabulous. Husband and son enjoyed their chile rellenos. There was a vegetarian option for my daughter. Prices were reasonable. We ordered the chicken skewers to go for my youngest who wasn't with us. They kindly included extras of rice, beans, salsa, tortillas and cutlery. We were looking for a popular restaurant that we picked out on Yelp when we stumbled upon La Lomita instead. What a terrific find! It is a small, family owned restaurant a few blocks off the main drag. We started with the Mixto Ceviche which was a combo of white fish, shrimp, conch & octopus. For my main entree, I had the butter octopus and my husband had the Conch Yucateca Stlye. Everything was fantastic, fresh and made to order. I am really shocked at how subpar our dinner was, especially given how highly it's rated. We have come to Isla multiple times but this was our first visit to La Lomita. Very underwhelmed. Pros: quick seating at an outdoor table. Adorable (yet persistent) kitty who let me give it pets while also attacking my raincoat on the back of the chair (yes - this is a pro to me!) Decent shrimp ceviche. Decent margarita. Very friendly young person was our waiter. Cheese chile relleno was pretty good (and big.) Cons: the chicken enchiladas suisas was terrible. The salsa verde was the only good part. The plate was hot so I expected my meal to be hot, but it was room temp at best. Not even the cheese slices on top were melted. Bland chicken and way too much crema. The salsas aren't hot. And the whole meal for 2 hours was almost $60. That blows my mind. It was not even close to the best food we had elsewhere on Isla. Next time I will stick to taco carts. read more

The food was delicious, I always get the coconut fried Snapper. The meals are reasonably priced and the portions large. Don't get - the beef fajita (170 pesos): it's a weird mix of arrachera and marinated meat, but pan-cooked and not at all like fajita. 1/5 - the filets isleño: tikin xic preparation (adobo-esque red sauce with onions), but wayyy too sour, and I normally put extra lime on everything. 1/5 Do get: - Mixed ceviche (5/5): fish, conch, octopus. Fish is chopped pretty finely but it's good. - Chile relleno with shrimp (6/5): the best dish here imo. Pepper lightly fried and juicy. - Sopa lima (4/5): solid chicken soup with rice and chips and lime juice squeezed in. Small portion though. Cutely painted inside and nice to sit out. The first time I visited La Lomita was over 15 years ago back when travel tips came mostly from books. While I haven't had every item on their menu, I've always made it a point to try something new when returning. 10/10. I have always felt satisfied to the point of needing a nap after. We are big on chicken soup at home and it's so it's comforting to know we can get home cooked chicken soup on Isla - just watch out for a bone or two. Highly recommend if you want real down home cooking. read more

My husband and I went here on Aug 10, 2019 for lunch. We tend to like off-beaten path restaurants that the typical tourists don't go to. As soon as we sat down at a place of our choosing, they immediately moved one of the fans in our direction. Since we were the only ones in there, i thought that was really nice of them. They asked us what we wanted to drink and we both wanted ice water, since we were both sweating a lot. They pulled their ceramic cups straight out of the freezer and filled it with ice and gave us water bottles, and a straw for each cup. To give us this initially, was the kindest that I have ever seen any restaurant ever do. Then we asked for chips and salsa. The chips tasted homemade. They had the tomatillo hot sauce (extremely hot), the red hot sauce (not that hot) and a pico sauce (extremely flavorful with the right amount of hot sauce). Though their English was not very strong and our Spanish was not very strong, we were both able to communicate with the things that we wanted or didn't want. Due to my allergies of: eggs, avocado and nuts (the allergens that they had at that restuarant), we were able to explain "NO" to those and stating "I am allergic to"....in español: "Eres alérgico a", which helped out a lot in stating what I couldn't have. Anyway, I have a chicken burrito and my husband had a beef (which he thought was going to be steak but then it ended up being ground beef). My chicken burrito was fantastic!! All the flavors were there. And my hubby had a bite of mine and said that mine was way better than his. He can pretty much eat anything really fast, even if he doesn't like it, and especially if he was really hungry. I have to love mine most of the time, before I eat it. The black beans were kind of weird, in a bowl with black bean soup on it. Had to fish the black beans out. But perhaps that is their culture? I'm not 100% sure. And the pickled/beet onions on the place, was actually pleasantly good as well. So, if we are ever back here, we will definitely go here rather than all the more popular restaurants and both of us will just get the chicken burrito. Their prices weren't horrible either. At the time of this writing, the island looked at $17 pesos was $1 American dollar. If you can figure out what you will spend the entire trip in the Cancún area, the best place to get your American dollars exchanged for pesos, is at an American exchange place....ie: Dallas, Chicago, LA, Charlotte, Atlanta, etc. read more

Service is a little slow and food quality is average. For our lunch we had chicken mole, ceviche, fish, lobster, tortilla chips. The French fries are crunchy and good but the chicken in the Mole is a bit bland and dry. Eating area is not having a/c so it is hot to me. The small restroom is however very clean and tidy. We a party of six involving 2 young boys , a couple in 50's and 2 seniors of 80's spent near $90 US dollars for our lunch. read more

Most amazing chili rellenos on Isla Mujeres! We call La Lomita "chili relleno heaven" because their food is so completely amazing. They have conch rellenos and conch ceviche (if the fisherman caught conch that day, that's how fresh it is!) which is out of this WORLD!! Their guacamole is friggin MIND BLOWING!!! They make it with avocados from their tree out back, we swear it's laced with crack because it's sooo amazing!!! It's family owned by this sweet older couple who live in the little house in back of the restaurant and they are often in the kitchen cooking and serving the food. If you get a chance to meet them they have a wonderful story to tell about how their restaurant came to be. Sometimes their credit card machine is on the fritz so bring pesos in case. For our first time eating here on a family Summer Vaca trusting the good reviews we had to try it for ourselves.As we walked inside it did take a few minutes for a person to come out and seat us and give us a menu.We had to use the bathroom not so clean toilets seats are commonly missing in Mexico but had to wash my hands there was soap. I knew we'd picked the right place for dinner when locals began showing up in face makeup, following their celebration of Dia de los Muertos. Of course, I had a pretty good idea prior to that, with a sloppy menu, plenty of florescent lighting and some big dude in the kitchen talking loudly on his cell phone the whole time. Not to mention, our server smiled so widely, I was able to read the manufacturer's information on her gold-tooth grill display. We sat at a flimsy table that sat just beyond the sidewalk of a tiny street. People walked by. Dogs stopped and sniffed us. It was cool like the other side of the pillow. -- And then came the wonderfully prepared food. My wife is a mole junkie. She loved her enchiladas. I had the fish fillet (a succulent breaded piece of red snapper). Top that with a couple of bottles of ice cold beer and it becomes a near-perfect experience. Bring pesos (use an ATM).
