i wanted to love this place because it used to be one of my local go-tos & the convenience of having a nearby Mexican spot is definitely there. Unfortunately, the last few times just haven't been the same. We went for Cinco de Mayo, so I completely understand the restaurant was extremely busy because of the holiday, but it was still disappointing overall. The service was pretty rough...no one really checked in on us throughout the meal, and everything felt very overlooked. The food just hasn't been hitting like it used to, which is disappointing because I genuinely used to enjoy coming here. My drink barely tasted like it had any alcohol in it, especially for the price. The one standout of the night was definitely the carajillo. I really hope they can get back to the quality and experience they used to have because this spot has a lot of potential. read more

You know a place is good when out-of-state family requests to come here! We usually get takeout from Ruben's. Not only is it reasonably priced, but we have never had a bad meal here (which can be hit or miss with a lot of places that offer takeout!) excellent Mexican food and everything is tasty. Although the food was good and the ambiance was pleasant, only two servers couldn't effectively handle the two large parties that were sitting in the restaurant and the other folks who trickled in- some even left b/c they weren't seated. I guess the timing was right for me. Also, I was surprised that I got rice, sour cream, chopped onions and refried beans with my dish but my wife only refried beans and sour cream. I used to eat tacos in Harlem in the Bronx on the street and Indian restaurants and I have to say this food is equivalent and price right. I was In Peekskill this week and I stopped in at Ruben's. This place has a really nice setting. It is very nicely decorated and the owners/staff are very personable. Great service and a very relaxed spot for a drink and a meal. Peekskill is a very nice town with lots of restaurants and bars. Quite a nice place to live too. Lots of industrial looking apartments and condos. The Ceviche and the Enchiladas were truly delicious, as well as the flan which was absolutely divine. The wings however were good but required a fire extinguisher be shot into my mouth to put out the fire! They were so hot my head started sweating and I had to take off my jacket. They should perhaps come with a warning sign. Some people like them like that but I would imagine others may not appreciate them. I personally loved them! This place was amazing! I came here on Cinco de Mayo, and the place was packed. I'm so glad I stopped by! Everything was delicious! I had the chips and salsa and the chicken enchiladas. This was my first time to Ruben's at my family's request as they love coming here. We got sat right away and the servers were very friendly. While we were there, someone celebrated a birthday and all servers came out to clap along to a birthday song played on the speakers and they brought out a massive sombrero for her to wear - the table was boasting with laughter and smiles. I ordered the Shrimp Chipotle and it was the perfect portion and I loved the side of veggies and rice with the "Special Sauce." I will definitely be back to try more from their menu! read more

My friends recommended me this place to go to eat and unfortunately I took my family to this restaurant not knowing that I was going to spend it, I had a very bad disgusting experience. The waitress before bringing me my food was touching her behind and she also stuck her finger in her nose without even washing her hands, she is dirty and should not work in any restaurant or something that has to do with food services. My wife also saw it and said how disgusting where she saw the decision to go to dinner. Having been @ Wonderful Rubens, prior, this is a first time 3-star review[hoping to revise] Being Cinco de Mayo, we called in advance learning no reservations were to be accepted. We visited early finding "reserved tables" marked. But, regardless, we were seated rather quickly. Adequate appearing wait staff. Took a few extra minutes, but did place our simple order[which seemed just for today only]. Quickly the tortillas, salsa[complimentary], and ordered beer came to the table fast. Before we knew, was approaching one hour of no food. Someone nearby who was seated after us was in the midst of eating. Granted, was very crowded so we kept our patience. Asked the waiter roughly how much longer. All we got was a nod. Had a bare table with the white paper and a single beer. Had to get up and leave, sadly. This killed the whole mood of Cinco de Mayo. Of course, left more than adequate $ on the table as to not walk out without paying. Although, it should have been complimentary at this point. Ended up with pizza across the street! Rubens: will ??retry one more visit or a delivery, but will have to rethink how fast will do so. Sorry Rubens. And DO hope to upgrade these poor numbered stars. read more

We chose this restaurant for its location by the Jack-o-lantern Blaze. 5 adults and 2 children. We love Mexican food! The guacamole was delicious and so fresh as were the accompanying chips! We had a variety of food: traditional food, surf and turf special- shrimp and steak outstanding, soup-big bowl chicken and lobster bisque, the margaritas delicious with good pours and drink menu very nice. Kids meals as expected. The friendly service and efficiency of staff made this not just a good experience, but an outstanding experience. We live over an hour away, but will go back. Let me start by saying I feel bad, as I have endorsed 2 lovely Mexican restaurants on yelp already. That being said, my wife and I stumbled on this place today as we drove through Peekskill. This is one of my new favorite spots!! The atmosphere and decor are beautiful! The staff is friendly, polite and professional. The food was delicious! The drinks are amazing ( I had the red sangria and my wife had the mojito) dessert was yummy and I also treated myself to a traditional Mexican Coffee that was so good. Ruben's Mexican Cafe is a quaint little mexican place that appears to be a hole in the wall first glance. Once inside, you see a cute little mexican restaurant that displays many paintings of what seems to be Mexico's historical figures. The atmosphere is really nice and I would definitely recommend for a nice date. Prices are good and the food is better. My fiance and I enjoyed our authentic mexican meal. I had the skirt steak fajita while she had a Beef Chimichanga with an enchilada. My fajita definitely made an impression to not only us but what seemed to be the entire clientele in the restaurant with the "sssssss" introduction. I noticed some crazy drinks as well being delivered to thirsty customers. The only thing about the place was that the service was kinda off and I felt a little rushed. For Mexican food, Ruben's isn't so bad. In the warmer months, it's nice to sit out on the patio sidewalk and enjoy a drink and an app. I find that the food can be a hit or miss though. Ruben's has always had great food, I should know, because I have been eating there for these past 15 years. Tonight we ate at Ruben's for the first time this calendar year, and all I can say is WOW! The service has always been excellent because every table seems to be every waiter and bus boy's table, and this hasn't changed- my glass was always full, yet nobody interrupted our conversation. Service was always there without infiltrating our experience. Gotta love excellent service! And the food!
