My family and I ordered take out. I ordered enchiladas suizas and asked for the normal red sausage that comes on it and extra on the side. When I get home and go to eat my food, it has no red sauce on it or on the side. I call Rubens to let them know they forgot the red sauce and the person on the phone hangs up on me! Update on Ruben's: With the new space across the street, the food is better than ever. Besides indoors, there are large space heaters for outdoor dining, with music, on Thursday-Sunday evenings. They are very accommodating on customizing your order. For example, I get salmon instead of beef on my tacos, and yellow rice and refried beans, which is not on the menu in that combination. It's been a good year we decided to give it a shot again well we are in Covid and we sat out side which was beautiful only two tables were full with two waiter. Took over five minutes to get the menus about that again when somebody asked us for drinks we told the waiter we couldn't wait to get our nachos we've been waiting to have them. They no longer have steak tacos or tacos Al carbon. I get one of the lunch special to use that was supposed to be on top of homemade tortillas. What do you know we waited and we waited a bit and then our entrées came out wow we said we would still like our nachos oh he forgot you still want them of course we do. So we finished our entrées The homemade tortilla was probably made yesterday the meal was average. Even my husband didn't finish his entrée that was odd. So I got a while longer we got the nachos OK they weren't bad. So we finally asked for the bill and the waiter tells us will get you next time yeah if I haven't been here in a year and I had a bad experience this time what makes you think there's gonna be a next time because you made me feel full price for your mistake at least you could've taken off the Sodas I really need to take the extra 20 minutes to just go to Fishkill. How could you make such a simple mistake how could service be so bad when there's only two tables and this is a waiter whose been there got yeArs. Decided to try somewhere new tonight and we weren't disappointed! Rubens service was great and their staff was very polite and their food was perfect. The shrimp fajitas were sooo yummy and filling I don't think I will be able to get up once I lay down. The margaritas were great as well! The guacamole was a little pricey especially since I feel like my guac at home ha more flavor but still a great little spot to go to. There's also out door seating which I loved for a Sunday night. I've dined here once a month for years when the Westchester Swing Band performs and have put up with the awful service, but tonight's experience was the last straw, and I will never go back. Be prepared to be ignored, treated rudely, and have super slow service. Tonight's service was particularly bad and the waiter acted like we were putting him out simply by asking to be seated (we had a reservation) and have our order taken and wanting to pay. Worthy of a 4-star rating in my opinion. The food tasted good, but didn't blow me away by any stretch. It did taste fresh though (had the vegetable burrito off the lunch menu) and was very nicely-presented. Also, kudos to them for making the extra effort and not serving Minute Rice; one of the first places I have been to in the Hudson Valley that bucks this trend! Open for a good dozen years in Peekskill (I am informed), the restaurant has a 'well-established', but not tired or shabby look. The place was clean and the music fitting and not too loud. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive and reinforced the impression that the restaurant really tries hard to please. There's some pride taken in what they do here. This brings me to a few suggestions, which will, hopefully, be received in the positive spirit in which they are offered: 1. Put a black pepper shaker on each table to keep the salt company (a few of us use the former more than the latter); 2. The home-made hot sauce that was offered had a decent flavor, but was less hot than your average bottled hot sauce. Why not provide a small bottle on each table? Some like it hot, after all. 3. I may have missed it, but I don't think it said my veggie burrito came with a mole sauce. I would have much preferred either the red or green sauce, so perhaps the waiter could confirm "mole sauce OK?", if it's not specified on the menu. If it is, I apologize, but why not confirm anyway? (But the mole sauce tasted fine.) 4. I read another review that said the vegetables in the veggie burrito tasted like frozen vegetables. Perhaps a little harsh, but not completely off base. It seems the vegetables are not grilled or roasted before being inserted into the burrito, which is a pity, as it would add a further, and needed, flavor dimension. In sum, three stars for the food, but four overall, because they really try hard. read more

I was really looking forward to loving Reuben's. But everything - tacos, burritos, salsa, enchiladas, rice & beans, margaritas - was really average and not very flavorful. Its amazing what a sprinkle of fresh cilantro can do for a dish. The location is perfect, the outdoor dining must be lovely on a warm night, but the food was really lacking and it is not likely that I'll return. Our favorite go to Mexican place. Very friendly staff and nice atmosphere. On Wednesdays they have $5 Margaritas. (Which are absolutely delicious). The Guacamole is fresh and made table side. The tacos are our favorite. They do need to improve on their salsa and I wish they had a larger selection of tacos. read more

I live here in Peekskill and out of all the restaurants in the city Ruben's has been the only one that adds the Tip into the bill. The first time I ate there as a party of 4 we didn't notice the tip had been included until we got home. So we ended up tipping twice which isn't a problem if the service is exceptional . The second time we were a party of three but no where on the menu nor was it told to us that gratuity will be added. I have asked around to other members of the community and it appears there has not been a tip access to their bill. I really think this needs to be answered because I surely hope this is not a racial thing. read more

The entrees are good sized but most of the food is bland and tasteless. The rice and beans are a joke. The enchiladas were inedible. However, the steak dishes can be good. I have enjoyed Ruben's in the past and thought it would be perfect for a late lunch last Sunday. I took my daughter there and was very disappointed. We sat outside which was nice, but the service was very poor despite the fact that there was only one other table of diners seated inside. It took about 35 minutes to get our food, the fish tacos were AWFUL - stay away from those. The rice was dry and the beans seemed to be right out of a can. We waited 20 minutes after finishing our lunch for the waitress to come back and see if we wanted anything else. She never came back and I went inside to get the check. She was seated in the back booth and made up our check then. We will not be going back for a long time. Peekskill has too many really good restaurants to waste time and money on this type of experience. read more

I would give this place less than one star if possible. The only reason this place is open is because of their night scene. If this place did not turn into a club at night, I see no way how it could remain open. The reason it is open is most definitely not because of their food. The food is bland and less than mediocre. Tortillas are soggy, taco shells are stale, and the salsa is tasteless and watery. The food is gross! When asked for "spicy", they could not deliver. The food they try to pass off as "Mexican" is a huge disappointment to say the least. I come from an area where there is a variety of delicious Mexican options. I might have been spoiled by California mexican, but I have generally found the food at Ruben's just ok, and the service also sometimes leaves something to be desired. Thought about giving this 2 stars, but honestly haven't found any better mexican elsewhere in the area so . . . It is a very nice spot to have an outdoor meal as soon as the weather turns warm, and they are generally open during severe snow as well (we have walked down there for a snow day lunch/dinner more than once). If you keep your expectations low, you shouldn't be disappointed. read more

I was kind enough to fill in for a musician for the end the summer street festival this past Saturday. I arrived an hour and a half early to set up. Ruben refused to allow me to back my car up to the band set up location, which would have taken me 15 minutes,stating that it may cause conflict with another restaurant owner. Thus, I had to make a half dozen trips to my car to carry my equipment from a street parking spot around the block. BTW, I am 66 yo. Then Ruben told me that he wanted me to move back and re set up all of my equipment to the sidewalk in order to have a couple of more feet back from the restaurant across the street, ignoring the fact that I would have countless people walking inches behind me and exposing me to COVID. When I refused to do that, he stated that I might then have to re-set up my equipment down at the opposite end of the street, which is where I would have preferred to set up to begin with. I advised him at that point that I just might take the option to pack my equipment back in my car and go home, so I suggested he speak with the band manager who was present. While I haven't eaten at Ruben's for quite a while, to be fair, I always thought their food and drinks were good. However, I can not recall being treated so disrespectfully by a venue owner in as long as I can recall. I will not boycott Ruben, but I will not consider frequenting his establishment in the future. I will take down this review upon receiving an apology. read more

Also- they claim they're open until midnight but when they were completely dead at 9:30 we offered to come back another time.
