I ordered a custom-made table (basic but sturdy design, literally just a tabletop on 4 posts) and paid for it in full on Aug 3 2020. The first red flag was unresponsive and slow communication. Here's what I emailed them regarding specs (this will be important later): 08/03/2020: "Can you give me a rough sketch of what the finished product would look like? I want to make sure there's no ambiguity or points of confusion. I included my own sketch attached. Please call me when you have a chance." 08/14/2020: "Hi, I've tried to reach you by phone a few times regarding the desk." The 4+ months that followed can only be described as an excruciatingly slow and painful process as I desperately tried to garner any tidbit of information they were willing to throw in my direction. I can't post the entire thread because of character limits but here's a sample of me emailing them: 09/07/2020: "Hi, any updates?" 09/17/2020: "Hi Patrick, I have not heard from you in several weeks now." 09/23/2020: "Hello Patrick, I would really appreciate an update from you." 10/05/2020: "Can you give me a firm date on when will this be ready? I placed the order back in early August and it has been two months now." 10/23/2020: "I have not received an update in more than two weeks. Can you give me a firm date of delivery or at the very least some sort of timeframe besides "soon"?" 12/08/2020: "When will this be done? When I visited two weeks ago you told me it should be done before Thanksgiving." 12/15/2020: "I'd like the table that I paid for in August please" UR had me visit twice, on Oct 24 and on Nov 11 to see the tabletop in person to talk about the color. In both instances, I insisted on a dark walnut stain. I emphasized the reasons why I requested it, emailed them samples of the color, supplied photographs, and even pointed at samples within UR's shop that matched what I was looking. The staff, for whatever reason, seemed extremely reluctant to apply any stain at all on the tabletop and would give only non-committal responses in the vein of "We'll see what we can do". Eventually, weeks later, they claim the table is ready for delivery and send me a photo where they have already applied a finish without applying a stain. I have no explanation for their behavior but at that point I got fed up with the endless delays and inexplicable stubbornness and decided to walk away and asked for a refund. UR refused and said my only avenue for redress would be small claims court (quote from them: "we will look for the paperwork"). When I pursued that, the owner resorted to juvenile insults, emailing me that I "suck ass" then eventually getting his attorney involved. To their credit, UR *did* soon after fix their error and applied the correct stain. I visited in person and the table looked great! I secured and paid for its delivery myself and spent several hours setting it up at its new location. It was only then that I found out two things: 1. The table was the wrong dimensions, and too short by 10%. 2. The table was not actually flat and curved inward (see picture). Returning the table at that point was the last thing I wanted to do after everything that transpired. UR claimed that I had approved the shorter dimensions but I have no record of that in any of our emails. Instead, what I do have is multiple instances of me trying to talk to them to nail down specifications but having a difficult time getting a response from them (see emails above). I was never given an explanation for why the tabletop surface was deformed but the flaw made the table functionally useless for its intended purpose. I fully understood that the pandemic has thrown many supply chains into chaos. It makes sense that materials and delivery would suffer delays; to be clear I'm not blaming UR for that. But the issue here is that over the course of several months it was extremely difficult to get a hold of them or get any concrete updates, and what I did end up with eventually was seriously deficient on multiple fronts. Even though I eventually did receive a refund (thanks to PayPal), time and money was wasted on delivery costs and unnecessary court filings on my end. I'm sure UR lost a lot of money as well! But that was a result of some very basic errors on their end and I don't understand why they'd let this happen to them. Hence my confusion.

Higo is the original shop owned and run by the Murakami family. This is one of the few businesses that survived the Executive Order 9066 written in 1942 with thanks to the non-Japanese friends of the family who owned businesses in the same building. Today, Kobo represents a new generation of local artists, selling gift items, crafts, tees, books, art, jewelry, and much more at varying level of prices. I highly recommend Kobo when shopping for unique gifts. When I recently visited, they had a glass artwork on display, art gallery style. It was also the yearly Nihonmachi celebration, and they had a table outside with an artist painting one of three designs on classic Japanese windchimes. I was thrilled to buy one of these adorable windchimes commonly featured in anime including Studio Ghibli movies. The perfect gift for my feline-loving friends. The staff were happy to let you browse through the store, and you can tell that they work to include items from the local art and design community while also carrying items with wider appeal. The prices may be a bit high? But I was less concerned with the cost of the items than I was on finding quality gifts - and KOBO has those in spades. I'd certainly recommend a visit.

Young Man told me I had to purchase the correct ones, and I would be refunded when the old ones were returned. 3) Correct product arrived, but I needed to repackage the old ones to go back to the warehouse. Since the box was broken down and too big, I took them back to the showroom. 4) Young man said I would get a refund in days. It took weeks. Of all the things used in our kitchen remodel -- countertop, tile, sink/faucet, flooring, paint -- this one gave me more headaches than the others combined.

It is sad to see historic places ripped down, but don't worry, some items are stripped out and saved! Here is where a lot of useful vintage house parts now rest. They have a good selection of cool lamps, antique fixtures, doors, windows, cabinets, cool glass, dressers-- you name it. I always get inspired with lots of fun ideas when I come here. We went in this time looking for a 'pocket' door, the old kind that slides into the wall.. We were really having a hard time finding one online. Not only did we find one here, they have a whole section labeled "pocket doors" and we found just what we wanted- a 'real wood' door (not the plastic-wood-material-door-thing they sell at Lowes nowadays.) So now we have a door that needs a lil cleaning but was only $35 bucks. The wood alone is likely worth that. They work hard saving the vintage items from otherwise demolition death and seem to price it affordable enough so it can be 'loved' again. Pros: -Organized bins and labeled piles. -Helpful and knowledgeable staff. -Free parking. Cons: -It's like a warehouse shop so everything is covered in thick 'antique dust.' (but, it is kinda fun to clean off your own glowing treasure for the cost you pay. ;) Reuse, recycle baby!
