Yep, crayons and color pages for the youngsters! I ordered the 6 oz salmon...you cannot complain about the size, if you know what 6 oz is. And the price is right. I think it was like $14 -- and it came with a side (I chose fries)...cause I'm a suckah for fries! I liked the salmon, and the fries. Your server will bring you bread with butter before your entree. We ordered the jalapeno poppers for an appetizer...and they were fabulous (served with a mint jelly). We ordered a cookie ice cream dessert for our kids to eat, and they enjoyed it. I liked my meal, a-ok...and my beer was lovely. I liked our waitress, and thought the overall experience was fine. I'd go back. Next time I might try the ribs, or the french dip. read more

The only reason I'm giving this four stars is because I'm also a big fan of classier places like Flemings. With that said, the food here is excellent, it's family friendly and they have great service. I had the New York Strip and my husband had the Filet. His filet was slightly undercooked and my New York Strip was practically jerky (asked for medium). They were super quick to redo my steak and when it came out it was delicious. Perfectly seasoned and juicy. They have these amazing potatoes that are actually fried on the outside. I had the sweet potato and could only eat about 1/4 of it. The salads were generously portioned and they provide a bucket of peanuts when you sit down, which provided lots of fun for my 4 year old daughter. I'll definitely be going again. I was super impressed with how great the service was and the quality of the meats. Although they didn't cook it to perfection, that can happen with steak. read more

This is a prime cut above the Texas Roadhouse and Outback establishments. The food was very good starting with the appetizer to the salad and ending with the filet mignon. Just a few minor things on the service, my dinner companion asked for water and it never arrived, no offer for dessert and we both had to ask for drink refills. Best steakhouse I've ever been to ever! I've been here several times over the 10+ years I lived in SLC and the steaks are always cooked to perfection. The onion blossom and dipping sauce is excellent. Drinks are good, service is great. The atmosphere is a little hokey and cheesy cowboy, but who cares with such great food? Prices are absolutely reasonable for the quality of the food. I might just be saying that because I live in Seattle now and trying to find a descent steak for under $50 is impossible. I highly recommend Ruby River for all of your carnivorous needs. read more

Here's my beef with Ruby River, either do reservations or don't. Don't put me on some bull crap "call ahead" list with the dangled carrot of having my wait "dramatically reduced." It's even less funny when I show up, having been put on this fictional roster of expediency, and the hostess tells me we are going to have a 15 minute wait. The truly delightful part of this exchange being me looking past her to see no less than 5 booths and 4 tables empty. Hilarious. I however, just do not have the time to play the artificial wait game. So I will take my dollars to a place that doesn't play these stupid games. In conclusion, no food review here friends, they didn't even get that far, I walked out. read more

We went this past Saturday to celebrate a friend's birthday & the service sucked!!! Second time this happens. Yes, it was a Saturday night, but that is no excuse for the poor service. Server didn't bother with refills or to check on us. For the prices I expect service to be average or above average not very poor. We decided on going elsewhere for dessert & drinks. We didn't want to tip the server any more than she deserved. This is the second time this has happen to me in this location and will never again come back. I recently tried this place for lunch with a group of co-workers. The first thing that struck me was the bad country music that the restaurant had issues controlling the volume of. For several times, the music rose to uncomfortable levels then dropped back down. The waiter was pretty prompt about getting our drinks out and taking our orders however when the food came, he didn't stick around much to see how we were doing. I ordered the new york steak, with a Caesar salad as my 1 allotted side dish. The caesar was OK for a side salad but forgettable. The steak same with from fried onion strings on the side. The steak was HORRIBLE! It was fatty and over-salted and over-peppered. I prefer to salt and pepper my steak to my tastes- the chef shouldn't be doing this for me. There were 2 others at the table who ordered the same and they were also unhappy with their steaks (too salt/peppery). From the conversation around the table, it appeared that no one was happy with their food, the general consensus was that it was OK to bland. Suffice to say, I will never come here again nor will I ever recommend it to anyone I know. Maybe it was just an off-day but there is no excuse for over-salted and over-peppered steak. read more

I am so sorry to have to say that after an excited moment thinking we were in for a delicious meal we were so horribly disappointed. They were very friendly people at the bar, but we were fairly quickly seated and our waitresses could not have been more unpleasant. No welcoming hello how are you, she deposited dry sourdough bread and some kind of fake margarine that they called butter. She took our order and they proceeded to deposit a browning onion they call it, do not confuse this with a Bloomin onion from outback. There was no seasoning or flavor to the onion, although my nephew liked the sauce. We also ordered a Filet, a New York strip and some thing called smothered chicken. There was no smothered on the chicken, it was dry with crusted on mushrooms and other things that we could not identify. My cousins said it was the worst Filet she has ever had. And I'm not kidding when I say her standards are not very high. Our New York strip was tough, and not at all flavorful. Had a bit of a gray color. The baked potato appeared to be fried in Grease and our wedge salad was drenched in dressing. Anytime we asked our waitress for some thing like cracked pepper, an extra plate, it took forever. Come here only if you're looking for something subpar to outback or sirloin stockade. I cannot for the life of me, figure out why they win, supposedly, steakhouse of the year in Utah. When the food arrived, I tried cutting with the flimsy silverware, and upon first cut, the knife broke. I ordered it Medium Rare, and it showed up well. Hard to say exactly how I feel about this place. First, the atmosphere is kind of interesting I guess. The western theme isn't really my thing, but you can tell they really try to nail it home and at least it's fully developed and consistent throughout. The service was friendly in the millimeter-thick / phony way of huge chains. Tables had a way of being jammed in together so waiters and guests had to constantly brush past (perhaps my biggest pet peeve). There were three people in our party and the meals were outright bad, meh, and very good. The steak was reported as being the best, the hamburger serviceable and the iceberg wedge salad pretty nasty. On the whole, I'll take my mom here when she comes into town again (she liked the steak) but I wouldn't venture here otherwise. read more

I used to come here a lot with my ex because she ate meat, but because my current girlfriend is vegetarian I've stopped coming. I used to love this place, but, from my tastemakers experience, I have to give them 3 stars. Based only on tastemakers, I'd probably give it 2. Moving on, we sampled their Gorganzola NY steak. The steak was cooked well, nice and tender, but the gorganzola was bad. Maybe it's just me, but it was way too overpowering. I asked for it on the side and just ate the steak. At first I dipped it a little but after a while I just ate it straight. The gorganzola is way too much and I'd rather just eat the steak alone. read more

More like 2.5 stars. My wife and I have tried Ruby River three times now over a period of about ten years. The place doesn't change much. They have a formula and they stick to it. Over that same period, We did quite a lot of traveling, and tried several upscale steak houses in other cities and two here in Salt Lake. Against that background, I regret to say that Ruby River is not keeping up. My wife always gets the prime rib, and we are happy to report that their prime rib is first rate! But, I am steak guy. Have not had a good steak there yet. I have always felt a "Steak House" style steak should use aged, prime or choice, well marbled beef, cooked at high temperature. Ruby River falls short on at least two of these requirements. Even though they seem to think they have it dialed-in. From the menu: "All Ruby River Steaks are USDA grain-fed American cuts, aged 21 days and cut fresh daily. We Season all sides to perfection then sear at 1600° to lock in the juices and flavor! " A. Pretty much all beef in the US is "USDA". The grade is what's important. The steak I had was clearly not prime, maybe choice (but maybe only select grade). B. If my steak was "aged 21 days" it was done in the bag and not dry aged which is the best method, and is the method used by most upscale steak houses. C."Season to perfection" is a matter of taste. In my experience, the steak seasoning here can overwhelm the taste of the beef. Some must like it though, as they have been doing this for some time. D. I have been to many Steak Houses that cook at high temp. It is typical for a steak cooked in this way to have a bit of char. That is not the case with Ruby River steaks. Their outward appearance is not much different than what you would get at home, cooking on the backyard grill at 500 degrees. On this last visit, I ordered medium rare, yet the steak came out medium well, with no char and only light grill marks. I frankly don't believe they cook at 1600 degrees. If they do, they are doing it wrong....with the meat too far from the flame. So for what it's worth, IMO- If you are wanting prime rib, this is the place. Steaks...not so much. read more

I love ruby river but this experience was horrible. I am a server and I don't know if Katherine A. thought we wanted free food because of the stereotypes us servers have but I sure hope not because I believe in server karma and I leave at least 20% always! I did not like the sweet potato fries because they had no flavor so I asked for regular fries. SO SHE GRABBED MY FRENCH FRIES WITH HER BARE HANDS STRAIGHT OFF MY PLATE. I have never seen anything so disrespectful and unsanitary. On top of that the manager made a new plate and the whole meal should've been free. I'd be embarrassed if this was my restaurant. We made a last minute decision to go out to eat on a Saturday night, but didn't want to wait 45+ minutes. Ruby River was able to seat us right away and we were served in about 10-15 minutes after ordering. I got the sirloin and grilled shrimp with sautéed mushrooms and lettuce wedge salad as sides. The steak was wonderful -- juicy and full of flavor. The grilled shrimp was a bit tough and seemed as though it sat on the grill a minute too long. Our waitress was very nice and checked on us multiple times. I will be going back next time I'm in the mood for steak. read more

I've had better. This place used to be a home town favorite but I feel they have lost their way. I found my dish salty and nothing to write home about. I had a steak that was over cooked to the "medium" I ordered and the veggies under cooked. In my opinion there are better options in the downtown SLC area for a good steak meal. read more

Very disappointed. I thought this restaurant was better than the meal we had last night. On a Monday night, we ordered filet mignon, only to be told they were sold-out! We ordered Rib-eye steaks instead. They were the fattiest steaks we haver ever eaten, with tough tendons running throughout the meat and an inch of fat around the outside. The flavor of what meat we got was "meh" (knowing that fat often gives the meat better flavor). 'Not the case here! The salads, vegetable & potatoes were good, which is the only reason for the 2 stars. We will not go back. read more

Really disappointing since this was our anniversary dinner. Draft root beer was good. The prime rib had no flavor which was really bad since the au jus had no flavor either. Mushrooms were okay, but nothing to write home about. The asparagus was terrible, huge stalks and tough. The caesar salad was okay but they hadn't trimmed the brown off the ends of the lettuce. Service was good though which is why it got 2 stars instead of 1. read more

Used to be a great place , maybe we went at wrong time , called week before to make reservations, for the following Sunday at 7 , they said not need unless bigger party, it was only going to be the 4 of us for our son birthday. Arrived no wait , which I thought was great , that's where it ended, the waitress was nice and half tried, I should preface this by saying we spent 1 hour there , ordering appetizers, drinks and dinner, the time is important because the whole time there they where banging, and some rude employees decided to kick the booth for last 20 minutes, the food was not that great which was such a disappointment maybe because they close at 7, I'm sorry didn't realize tipped over 20 percent would have been higher if you guys could have acted half decent , we won't be back couple hundred dollars pass , probably should just be closed on Sunday your employees not want to be there, and now neither will I read more

We ate here in February when we were staying at the Peppermill. Both of us had the RibEye Steak. BEST EVER! Everything was perfect. THEN, we just ate there on Sunday May 20th. It was like the twilight zone. We both ordered the steak sandwich with foccacia bread. The only way I can describe how HORRIBLE it was is to say that the Chef must have mistaken the meat(steak) for the pile that was to be THROWN OUT. It was dry, lifeless, grey in color, tough as a nail. HORRIBLE. I should have said something while there but my sister bought our dinner and I didn't want to embarrass her. We will be back only because the RibEye was so good. But, PLEASE get that steak sandwich off your menu, unless the Chef truly did mistaken the throw out pile and put it on our sandwich. We had teriyaki filet mignon and garlic mignon kabobs, salad and I ordered the baked potato while my dinner companion ordered the yam for our main courses. Neither of us could eat our potatoes... Service was subpar. I was part of a party of 20 but they managed to get everyone's order wrong. I asked for a 16 oz. Ribeye steak, medium rare but instead I received a well done steak. I'm probably going to ruin the surprise of the review here and make it less important to read through the entire thing with this next sentence, but it is perhaps the perfect way of describing things. This used to be a great restaurant. You can see it all over the walls, plaques and awards from Best Steak and so back in the late 90s and early 2000s, when it was actually dynamite. What it's like now is the burnt remnants of rubble after the explosion. I don't generally grouse about pricing; restaurants can charge whatever they want and if I don't feel the value is in line with pricing, I simply will not return. In this case, with such a dismal performance in nearly all respects, they definitely need a major overhaul to keep the value commensurate with the hefty price tag. Execution errors abounded. Medium apparently means medium well now, with parts actually well and rare means medium rare and again inconsistent cooking. It's been a while since one of my dinner companions has sent food back, but that happened today. Another companion's Oscar steak came with broken Bernaise sauce, unfortunate that this was her first experience with it. The jacketed sweet potato was still as great as ever, thankfully, but the iced tea was dreadful and the steamed vegetables were served somewhat cold. The prime rib itself was lacking that certain je ne sais quoi that used to really set it apart. This one was a struggle with sour cream and the au jus and it wasn't helped by being somewhat excessively fatty and requiring of a bit of sawing to get into pieces. Not to forget the calamari, try as I might, but it was missing most of the batter. No shame there as the batter was not very good, but the calamari was also oily and overcooked, with the rings having a nice rubber band-ish texture. The raspberry creme brulee, while tasty, also suffered some notable execution errors, particularly in the crust. Service was sort of a mess, with the hostess doing a pretty decent job trying to get us sorted after we got there, but the main waitress, who was also training someone else, seemed sort of irritated about something the entire time. The person who gave us our trays, despite telling everyone to watch out for hot plates, also managed to spill sauce of some kind on me, but was otherwise affable. Mistakes happen and I can forgive little errors like that, but attitude from wait staff I find particularly grating, particularly when it is undeserved, such as here. The trainee, however, put forth the effort and did a great job, even through the inexperience and the perhaps the roles should have been reversed. The fact that everything took a far greater amount of time than in the past, even when the restaurant has been loaded (and it was almost entirely empty when we were there), didn't help matters much. Even the desserts took a good long while to get. I can't say I'll be returning anytime soon (and maybe not ever), but I hope they get themselves back together. What this was today was a shame for a place that used to be a fixture of consistent quality. I'm going to leave my previous review as a reminder of how things used to be, but I definitely can't recommend this place any longer for the prime rib, though the jacketed sweet potato they still do very well, if you wanted to go just for that, I guess... read more

Any place can have an off night, but out right rudeness is totally unacceptable. We were treated with total rudeness by the manager because I put the plate on the table and off of the plastic try. Every time I tried to cut my steak on the plastic try the plate slide off and so I solved the problem by putting the plate directly on the table. The Manger and the waitress both tried to shame me by saying the table is really expensive and the plate could hurt it. even though I could hold the plate in my hand. it wasn't hot! He Manager, hoe expensive is it when customers choose to NEVER eat there again? I will NEVER eat there again, I tried to be very reasonable with him but he was outright rude and shaming. You should not be in this business! Avoid this place unless you want to be treated rudely. read more

We've eaten here a few of times now. The up side: This is a very down home style steak house. Guitars, cowboy boots and other western paraphernalia on the walls. Very warm and inviting. The service is always very friendly. Every time we've been here our waitresses have had personality to spare. They did not, however, hover, flatter, flirt, get too chatty, or over-do it. I love prompt, friendly service. I'm not so excited when servers sit next to me on the bench while taking our order, flirt, or make that sort of effort to ensure a good tip. You want a good tip? Be a good server. Smile, be friendly, happy, and helpful. Remember, we're not drinking buddies. The employees seem to really like their jobs and it shows in the service. Ruby River scores huge in service. I've never left here leaving the server less than 20% and often times more, and each time they've earned it. The last time we dined at Ruby River I had the prime rib ordered medium rare, the sautéed mushrooms and the baked potato with the works. The prime rib came exactly medium rare. It was cooked to absolute perfection. The sautéed mushrooms are fantastic. I'm pretty sure confession and penance are in order for eating the baked potato, but it's worth weeks of Hail Marys and Our Fathers. My wife ordered a steak with coconut shrimp and the same sides. She said her steak was cooked exactly as she wanted, medium well. Her feelings of the coconut shrimp are as mine about the potato. She too loved the mushrooms and the potato. The down side: They play country music. While I don't eat very much red meat, when I do it will continue to be at Ruby River. read more

Normally I would give this place 5 stars, but last time I went with my fam for my birthday, I was slightly disappointed. The blooming onion wasn't very good and the ribs were a little over cooked.
