Our Shokunin doing his thing for our wonderful meal on 7 MAR 2025.
Bradford D.

Suddenly I'm very much enjoying these Japanese teppanyaki steak houses these days...especially after Friday night's visit to Bonsai here in Sandy to celebrate my youngest son's 29th birthday. My wife LOVES these places with all of the delicacies and the flavors...not to mention "the show" that the Shokunin (職人) puts on which is always a treat. While our particular chef was very reserved with his show, he was a true teppanyaki pro...with all of the skills you'd expect...the opening flame extravaganza, the flaming onion volcano, the shrimp tossing, and the super sharp knife that cut through the veggies, the chicken, and especially the NY Strip steak "like it was buttah!" Where do I get one? The onion soup was delish, and the salad was yummy (what is that dressing they use? Ginger dressing?), and then the show began. I ordered the "Geisha Special" (NY steak, chicken, and shrimp with fried rice and veggies) and what really amazed me was the excellent portion size. I was hesitant to patronize these places as I always fear that I will come away hungry. But not this venue. Excellent portion size, and I left full (almost did a doggy bag...but I managed!) I was there with my son and his wife along with my better half...and we enjoyed the shrimp and mushroom appetizers, and each selecting their own main entree. Along with three adult beverages (1 hot sake, two beers), we got out of there right at $244 (with gratuity). Our waitress, Vicky, did a great job taking care of us, and so did our Skokunin. It really was a special night and everyone enjoyed themselves. Five Stars for excellent food, along with wonderful service, and a lovely show. We'll be back!

The hibachi orders were tasty! The staffs were friendly and attentive. I ordered filet mignon with additional dishes such as soup and salad. They were able to accommodate my allergies without any issues. My partner ordered teriyaki chicken and scallops-- she said scallops are perfectly cooked!

We went here to celebrate a birthday with dinner. It did not disappoint. Food was good.

Every part of our visit was simply outstanding! We had 2 kids with birthdays and looked at Benihana and Tepanyaki but based on (terrible) Yelp reviews alone, we skipped those and found Bonsai. Same concept, same entertaining Habachi style experience but just done so much better. The place is clean, the service is exceptional, the food is great! The owner came around checking on people, cracking jokes and helping with service. The portions are overly generous too! They took out kids birthday photo and added it to the wall of hundreds of celebration visits. A nice touch! We'll be back. Highly recommend!

It was OKAY overall. Staff were kind, filet was delicious, scallops had a good texture, fried rice ($3 upcharge) was salty and not good. I've had better in other states.

We loved this place!! We wanted something like "Benni" for a birthday dinner, but also wanted to support something more local! This was the ticket! The wait was long on a Saturday night, but so worth it! Our group got a good mix of entrees and appetizers, and there wasn't something we didn't like! The only down side was there wasn't a typical "yum-yum" sauce that we are used to, but it was just fine!! The salad dressing was DIVINE, the chef was hilarious and personable, both cuts of steak were marvelous and tender, and the vibes were immaculate. 10/10 would recommend!!

I love Teppanyaki and have been craving it lately. None of the restaurants in Utah county seem very good anymore. We had to drop a family member off at the airport yesterday afternoon so my son and I decided to find a Teppanyaki place on our way back home. Using Yelp we found Bonsai in Sandy. I was very happy with the service. They replaced my wine which was too sweet for me without complaint. The service was quick and the chef put on nice show but with it just being my adult son and I he did not go over the top which I appreciate. The traditional soup and salad started off the meal both were delicious. I usually get noodles at Teppanyaki wanted to keep my carbs low So I skipped them. My son got the fried rice and I did try this. It was very good. We both had the New York steak, I had the lobster tail and he had shrimp. The chef asked if we would like our steak cooked with garlic butter this was a delicious unique option. The steak was cooked perfectly to medium rare. The lobster tail was a nice size but the overall texture and flavor was lacking. The shrimp on the other hand were delicious. I would opt for shrimp or scallops next time versus the lobster tail. The two sauces were good but one was a bit sweet for my taste. I would rate this place 7 out of 10. I would have given it an 8 out of 10 had it had any sushi options which it did not. Overall good quality food and service.

Ask the Community - Bonsai Japanese Steakhouse

I'm looking for a place to eat before a play at Hale Theater. About how long does the dinner take, and do you get seated at your reserved time? Thanks.

Dinner is quick when you get seated but they don't do reservations. Sometimes it can be a long wait. Sometimes it's quick. I'd recommend calling ahead to see what the wait is. It's always worth the wait, but when you have something to do sometimes… Read more

Can they do the meats without teriyaki? On the keto diet, can't have the sugar. Really, can just have meat, so will have to forego the rice, too. Are they flexible?

They cook to order. They can cook the meat in garlic and butter.

Do they accommodate to allergies such as dairy free?

I don't know about dairy-free, but I do know that someone asked about gluten-free and they said they'd be able to help them out. I would just call & confirm.

What's the price like?

Entrees range from 20-50 dollars. Well worth the price!

Update 2 This…read more"James" started attacking me via private message. This is absurd. Update 1 It's incredible to see this James L, the "employee," jump out and lie. I went to the door to your kitchen and asked for help. No yelling or screaming. Once you got a bad review, you started attacking your customer. What a brilliant tactic! Your act makes you a total clown. Original Post My friend and I tried this place a few nights ago. The entire experience can be summarized in one sentence. The teppanyaki* chef was professional and friendly. The boss's service attitude was a deal breaker. First, some context. We came for all-you-can-eat, but we were not trying to stuff ourselves or eat until we were uncomfortable. We just wanted a good meal with a good experience. In a typical teppanyaki meal, meat and vegetables are served first, and fried rice or noodles are served at the end. At this restaurant, they began with fried rice and noodles immediately. It was apparent they were trying to fill people up early. Honestly, this kind of tactic is easy to spot, but since we were not planning to overeat anyway, we let it slide. You could also tell the process was carefully designed. The first round was cooked fresh in front of you, which felt engaging and fun. After that, if you wanted to order more, everything had to be made in the back of the house and brought out later. This was clearly stated on the menu, so, from a rule-based perspective, it was acceptable, but from an experiential perspective, the live-cooking element diminished noticeably. To be fair, the chef during the first round was great. He was friendly and engaging, interacting with guests throughout the cooking process. The atmosphere at that point was pleasant. Once that first round was over, the experience quickly went downhill. My friend and I ordered another round of beef and shrimp to share. We ultimately waited half an hour. We repeatedly asked, and the only response we received was "almost ready." The problem was that my friend needed to catch a flight after dinner, so time was tight. I eventually went to the kitchen and asked what was going on. I was told by a boss-looking guy very seriously that grilling takes more time if you want it to taste good. That explanation made no sense, since the teppanyaki had been cooked earlier in just a few minutes. After more than thirty minutes, the food finally arrived. It was a tiny plate, about six or seven slices of beef and six or seven pieces of chicken. I did not mind the portion size. Smaller portions are better than wasting food. But things got worse. We had ordered beef and shrimp. What arrived was chicken and beef. Even worse, the meat was lukewarm, clearly not freshly cooked. After we pointed this out to the server, less than a minute later, a freshly cooked plate of shrimp was brought out. The color and temperature made it obvious it was just made, which only confirmed that the earlier beef had been prepared in advance and was sitting around. I asked to speak with the owner or boss. The staff told me the person I had spoken to in the back kitchen earlier was the boss. When he came out, he did not look at us directly, spoke while turned to the side, and never offered an apology. He repeatedly said, "We don't know what to do." At that point, this was no longer about the food. It was about basic service attitude and basic respect. I fully understand that running a restaurant is hard. Being busy, making mistakes, or having process issues are all understandable. But when a customer gives serious feedback, and the response is dismissive, indifferent, and shows no remorse, that is not a simple mistake. It implies that the customer does not matter. *One last note. Strictly speaking, this place is not hibachi but teppanyaki. The name does not matter, nor does the format. In the service industry, what truly matters is sincerity and basic respect for customers.

The food is delicious. The service is steadily fast and slow. They are so busy that you might get some items delivered at a decent time and other items will take an incredibly blonde time to be delivered to the table. The ambience is only OK. They tried to make it look high end upon initially entering the building, but the seat we sat on was a bit dirty. And the biggest issue I have, which is why I earned one star is because I saw one of the sushi chefs get a drink from the soda dispenser. They have open ice where they have to scoop it into the cup, and he sneezed right on the open ice and scooped the ice into the cup with the cup that he was going to drink from. This is one of the biggest health violations I have witnessed with my own eyes. Because of this, I will not be back.
