While exploring Easton on my way to St. Michaels, MD, I found myself with a very important problem. I wanted dessert. Not ice cream. Not candy. I wanted a proper baked good. A quick search pointed me toward Ruby's Cake Shoppe & Pastries, and after seeing it was one of the highest-rated bakeries in town, I figured the Universe had spoken. Off I went. Ruby's sits quietly in a little strip mall that would be easy to drive right past if you weren't specifically looking for it. Fortunately, I was looking for it because a day with a cupcake is almost always better than a day without one. When I walked inside, I had the bakery all to myself. As an overthinker who's capable of spending way too long deciding between desserts, this was tremendous news. Nobody behind me. No pressure. Just me staring lovingly into the bakery cases trying to convince myself I had enough self-control to leave with only one cupcake. Spoiler alert...I did not. Being the peanut butter enthusiast that I am, the Peanut Butter Banana cupcake immediately caught my eye. Banana and peanut butter is one of life's greatest combinations and this cupcake absolutely proved my point! The cupcake reminded me of a wonderfully moist slice of banana bread while the frosting was thick, rich and unapologetically peanut buttery. This thing was GOOD! Then Ruby herself came out to check on me. How cool is that?! We chatted for a few minutes and she told me her favorite cupcake is the Hummingbird. In fact, she laughed and admitted she usually eats three every time she makes them. Three?! Challenge accepted! Just kidding. Mostly. Naturally, I had to see what all the hype was about. And Ruby wasn't lying. The Hummingbird cupcake completely stole the show! It was incredibly sweet without being over the top, and the pineapple running through the cake made every bite bright and interesting. The cream cheese frosting was wonderfully sweet and paired perfectly with the cake. I honestly couldn't stop smiling while I ate it. At $3.75 each, both cupcakes felt like an absolute bargain. Ruby's also specializes in custom cakes for birthdays, weddings and celebrations, and after tasting these cupcakes, I can only imagine how incredible those cakes must be. Parking was plentiful right outside the shop, and while there are a few small tables inside if you'd like to enjoy your treats there, it seemed like most people were stopping in to grab dessert and head on their way. My advice? Don't just stop because you happen to be driving by. Make Ruby's the destination. I know I will! Anytime I'm within striking distance of Easton, there's an excellent chance you'll find me standing in front of the cupcake case once again pretending I'm only buying one. read more

Ever heard of "mud cake"??????!!!!!???? I haven't but it taste yummy!!!! When I first heard the name, I thought of making mud pie as a kid.....eeeek!!!! Ruby's got my cake order wrong and then never corrected it. Although the cake Ruby's made was fresh and seemed of high quality, it was also plain because it was not made as specified and it was certainly not the kind of cake the recipient wanted so my family was disappointed. I spoke with Ruby's multiple times on the phone, but they ultimately did not even provide any discount on the price of the $75+ cake that they admitted they made incorrectly. Worse yet, they lied about what had happened in response to my review on another site (see below). This shop may make great cakes, but they are clearly not detailed-oriented or customer-friendly. Here's the full version of what happened. I called the shop and spoke with someone (possibly Ruby) who seemed knowledgable and took my order. I told her the person who the cake was for REALLY LIKED berries so I wanted some sort of cake with a lot of berries. The woman suggested I do a combination lemon and berry cake, and I agreed to that. I picked up the cake, and when I got it home, I was dismayed to see it was only lemon and no blueberries. Although the cake was fresh and moist, it was also plain, being only lemon and vanilla. I called the shop and spoke with the same woman again. She checked the order and confirmed that it was supposed to have berries and said she'd call me back the next day after speaking to the baker. The next day, she called me back and apologized and said the baker had forgotten to include the berries. I told her that I understand that mistakes happen but that, having paid more than $75 for this cake, this was a big disappointment, and I'd like at least some sort of discount. The woman offered me a free pastry at the bakeshop, but as I told her, that was useless because I am from out of town. She told me she didn't think she'd be able to offer ANY reduction in price whatsoever but that she would talk to her manager and get back to me the next day. She never called back. In response to my review on another site, the business responded stating, "we offered you to have your mother who lives in the area and we believe the cake was for her (We do not want to disappoint Mom) to come in at any time to be treated to free Fruit Tarts, which you refused." This is a lie. I have no family whatsoever in the area, and the cake was not for my mother. I never mentioned my mother to this business. The fact that the merchant would fabricate a story about fake family living in the area should be an indication of the type of business they run. The merchant also said they had no way to offer me a partial refund of any kind because I paid with credit card. That sounds bogus to me, but of course they could always simply write a check if that were really the case. I wanted to love this local business. I really did, especially after hearing some good things about it. But a place that treats its customers like this simply does not deserve your business. read more

Ms. Ruby, was very open minded about your personal preference e.g (gluten free, sweetness level, design, frosting, icing, pretty much anything you can think of). I had to write a review. I can't say enough good things about this small business. I ordered a cake for my mom's 80th birthday. When I came to pick it up it was wrong. The cashier said how sorry he was and they would be closing at six they would have another one made and it would be ready for pickup by closing time. I was a little hesitant as it was now after two but I agreed. I called my husband and told him. He told me to cancel the order we would figure something else out as we live in Hurlock and I didn't have any other errands to run in Easton. I called to cancel and they told me they would deliver it to my address. They did deliver it before closing time and they even went as far as paying for the cake in full! The owner called to apologize as well! The cake was delicious! I will definitely be back as good customer service and delicious items are so hard to come by these days! I'm so glad to see good hospitality has not gone out the window with the times! As so many local places, even small business owners don't care about their customers.
