Ramen is up there with some of the best I've had and I'm from Chicago. Not overly salted which is how you know they trust their dish. The only negative is the egg, which isn't molten like other ramen spots. It could've been cooked more and at least cut in half to let it absorb the broth. I got the miso ramen with the fire in the bowl. Get this - the best part wasn't the ramen, it's the bao buns. I got the soft shell crab one which was actually perfect. Seaweed salad hit the spot too. I loved the inside of the bar, it was fun and engaging with trivia night and endless pinball machines. However, I was not a big fan of the food, which is what my rating entirely is going off of. The okonomi fries are tasty and worth trying. The mall chicken, however, is a sodium bomb and is essentially ketchup with a hint of extra sugar that I just didn't like. Ruckus Ramen is not only tasty food, it is also housed inside The Avenue, which is the platonic ideal of the modern Rust Belt bar. We have actually never had the ramen, but we have definitely enjoyed the bao, edamame (ee-duh-mames, as I call them), cucumber salad, and the green curry. The hot chicken rice bowl was good but needs to be paired with something to add some depth to it as it's really just hot fried chicken with rice. Entrance is at the back through a door labeled "The Avenue"! Lots of pin ball machines (all the fancy high-end pro and special edition ones!) on two floors. Plays are $1 ea or 3 for $2. Pool tables and a stage set up for live music. Let someone know you're there for food and sit at a table. They will bring you menus. Hoisin sauce is an odd choice for everything that normally comes with eel sauce or similar, but it does the trick. Definitely mall-reminicent, but in a good way. Pork belly is the thin crispy variety, sweet potato comes cubed and herbed. Fried garlic is a super light dusting of really thin garlic shavings. Can't say that one was worth the upcharge. Karage has the skin on which is unique. I liked it! The cucumber salad is really delicious and not really spicy at all. Just a hint of chili oil flavor. Service was nice and efficient. We paid at the front when we were done. They like to leave you to your own devices here because it's primarily a bar/arcade and it's just easier if you flag someone down when you need anything. Gotta say Im surprised that there aren't more vegans praising this place with reviews... so here i go. This place is great! I regularly get the spicy mapo ramen and the spicy green curry ramen (both vegan as is). Nothing better than being able to chill in a cool, strange, arcade bar and have a hot bowl of ramen at the end of a day. Their tofu coney bao is also pretty damn good. My partner and friends, who eat meat, love this place too and regularly get the miso ramen and the okonomi fries. At first glace around the restaurant, I could tell that this was not a typical bar. I felt a hipster type vibe when I walked through the door, and there were arcade games everywhere. Ths interior was pretty dim, and there were small tables as well as counter seats. We were not greeted by the host upon arriving(maybe he was having a bad day, I don't know). I was clueless to how this worked, since no one told us if we were supposed to pick our own seats or get waited by the staff. We sat at a table for about 15 minutes and no one came by, so I walked to the counter asking how we place an order. We ordered one of the drink specials, spicy red curry ramen, and the miso ramen. They were both okay, the miso wasn't anything special. The red curry ramen was interesting, it wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing either. I could definitely taste the coconut milk in the red curry which is a good thing. However, it is an expensive bowl of ramen compared to the other ones around here, and the bowl wasn't as big as I expected. The mixed drink that we ordered was also very pricey especially for the small amount that they gave. Overall, I'm not sure if I would want to come back. We sat there for 20 mins with the waitress walking around us trying to get their attention. No one helped us so we left. It was disappointing. Some of the best coconut milk red curry this side of the Mississippi. The fried chicken that is a part of various dishes including ramen, curry, bowls, and 'KARAAGE' is the best protein on the menu. The vegan ramen was more of plain noodles with a hot sauce and weird toppings that lacked flavor if not none. The miso ramen had a smokey taste that tasted like I was eating smoked meat. It was definitely an Americanized ramen which is fine, sure, but I couldn't even finish my bowl. The smokey taste was so overpowering that I barely had a taste of the chicken/miso ramen itself. This was really good ramen in a super funky location. Nestled in between super sketchy China Flavor on one side and a run down business on the other side... I was worried about my maps location finding ability But thankfully it was not either of those businesses and was in the middle. It's hard for me to vary my choices at Ruckus Ramen when the Miso Ramen is SO DANG TASTY. It's everything I dream about on a chilly rainy day. I'm salivating just writing this review and thinking about that hearty bowl right now. There's one thing I'm going to nitpick on, however: my last bowl had chewy pork belly. It was difficult to bite into despite the thin cut. 'Tis my one and only gripe but it won't keep me from coming back to stuff my face with more delicious ramen. I still highly recommend you try it. Ruckus Ramen has some of the best Japanese/Japanese-fusion food I've had anywhere in the US. I was out of town for 6 months and coming back here was like a dream come true. The staff have always been consistently attentive and the food has always been prepared with care. I always get the Kara-age (fried chicken), which is bewitchingly good. The rice bowl dishes are also quite big for the price and delicious. The bao are the bomb. 10/10 would recommend. And yes, it's located in a bar. My friends and I stopped going to The Avenue a few years ago because the service was awful. The staff was nice, but they were always understaffed and inexperienced. I just went back for the first time in a long while to try Ruckus Ramen and we had a great experience. I sat at the bar with wife and had great service. My wife and I both work in the industry, so while we weren't sitting at a table, we definitely noticed the other wait staff was moving around efficiently and keeping up with some larger groups that had come in around the same time as us. As for the food, it was great! My wife got the Chile Soft Shell Crab Bao and the Miso-Glazed Brussel Sprouts (a special that day). I had the Mapo Ramen with a some added pork belly. We also shared the Okonomi Fries which were great, but I wish we would have added the optional smoked pork. Everything was great and we kept taking bites of each other's food. Don't let the dive joint fool you. You may flinch at the look of The Ave from the outside and maybe even in. It's a musty grungy goth look that makes it unlike any other. Once you get past the look. Sit, order a brew and review the menu. Scan it. Your eyes will get lost and you won't believe this place can deliver all that's offered. I dare you to try as much as possible. So let's get to the goods, the Ramen (rah-men). The broth: full, deep, well rounded and can stand alone. I've had the vegetable broth, the chicken, the pork & chick and I've not been left with much to want after each. Try them all, bring friends and share. Then your bowl will have so much to play with and enjoy that you won't know what to dive into first. I caution against picking up the pork belly (veggies or chicken) first (if that's what you order) because it only comes second to the broth in delight. The egg, cooked medium will throw you off if you're not comfortable with a medium egg yolk flavor but trust me, with the broth you'll be taken to a new place. The green onions are like they came from the garden and were cut fresh for your meal. You'll taste them with every bite. The bowl will be balanced, you will have just enough of each puzzle piece that makes this ramen worth your time and taste buds for a beautiful gastro picture. The seaweed, the noodles, the greens... just dive in. The buns-bahn-mi are cute and cuddly for the tongue. The soft white buns melt easily with the sauce, cucumbers, meat and green onions. I've ventured to try only one and my heart longs for more. The gyoza are steamed dumplings packed with pork and goodies so you can get everything in one bite. You don't have to worry about swallowing each dumpling in one drop. You can get what you crave in one bite. They're so neat and cute I didn't expect them to pack so much flavor. They offer more than you bargain they can give. Oh and if you like dip in the sauce but it's not needed. The rice bowls give a twist to what I've gotten in most places. The veggie bowl with sweet potatoes I ordered was chunky and filling. The sauce is thick and sweet which is a hard contrast to the salt heavy broths. The rice bowls are lighter fare and while you won't want much after you could fit more appetizers in before this than the ramen. I ordered pork belly on the side as I love veggies and meat as a delicacy and it paired well. Lastly I've tried the potato salad which was thick and creamy and a surprise to my senses. The cucumber moons atop decorated and gave crisp clean bite to the soft black sesame seeded potato chunks. I would try the Ramen first (until 10:00 pm) and then work your way to other items. Been here twice now and the food is absolutely awesome. Ive had two different types of ramen here and both were great! The pork belly is actually crispy unlike at Sapporo. The broth is incredibly flavorful and the portions are good size. I also loved the fried chicken bao. Both times I've been there they have local live music which can be ehh. But it's fun to watch nonetheless. The bathrooms however could use some work. They just felt dirty and gringey in the bathroom.
