For those want to try this restaurant, this is not a ramen shop, nor Japanese neither. More like Asian fusion noddle shop. They have pho stock, miso, shoyu soup, curry and others soup base. Also stir fry noddles, buns and wings. Menu is very diverse and they look good and taste good. Noodles bowl you pick your own ingredients. It can be pricey if you all more main ingredients like beef or mushrooms. Yes they charge like $3 for mushrooms. Their soup seems like they make their own and not premade somewhere or heavy on msg. I was so excited to try this place. I am giving it an extra star in case I simply ordered a combination that wasn't great, and I will give it another try before I make a final judgment. My ramen was fine, but not great, and perhaps a simpler choice of ingredients would be better. My friend and I both sampled the egg roll and really were not fans of that. Unfortunately, I came here wanting to eat something similar to ramen. I'd looked at the reviews, so I knew it was more of a general noodle place, but people seem to think the noodles here taste good? Confused about the frequency of this take on Yelp. Would probably be fine if I had not eaten even slightly decent ramen or pho before, but their buffet style noodles and broth did not taste very good. Flavor overall disappointing. Having had previous positive noodle experiences, mostly where I've grown up in CA, eating here on a Saturday last August upset me. I had to immediately drive to Kalamazoo afterwards to have some decent Japanese food so my day would not be ruined. The cafeteria-like mix-n-match fusion noodle concept is an interesting idea. Stopped by this ramen joint for lunch on a road trip to the States. It was really busy when we came, as it was peak rush hour and the location itself is pretty small, so it got full really quickly. A big reason as to why I'm choosing to give it a good review is the abundance of options they have. Although they're known for their ramen, they have baos, korean burritos, naan, and even mochi ice cream! I got the tofu ramen -- the tofu in it was really good, I could tell that it was freshly fried. The ramen itself, however, did not taste like authentic Japanese ramen at all. With my ramen, I got all the possible add-on garnishes, and because of the kimchi and hot chilli sauce, my soup base was actually very sour, and did not taste like the miso I originally selected. If you come, try not to get overly excited about the unlimited garnishes option; I did, and my meal suffered accordingly! Although this place is technically a more lax restaurant, with no actual wait staff, all the servers who I interacted with were friendly and sweet. The cashier walked me through the whole menu, even offering me samples, while the server never once complained about me adding additional garnishes. Verdict: Although the ramen does not taste like traditional ramen, I would still recommend for Yelpers to try it out for themselves, and to check out the restaurant's other options! read more

We decided to try a new Ramen restaurant while traveling in Michigan. The restaurant is located in downtown Battle Creek slightly away from the main strip. The building has a hip artistic feel to it with a really cool mural on the side of the restaurant. We ordered a little bit of everything to try from Umami. We had five bowls of Ramen, 4 Egg rolls (2 Shrimp and 2 Chicken), and a Chicken Teriyaki dish. The Ramen is a good portion size, but lacks flavor and depth. The Chicken Teriyaki had big chunks of meat and tasted great. The highlight of the meal were the Egg rolls. They are 2 -3 times bigger than a normal Egg roll and taste great. The employee that helped me with my order was friendly and helped guide me through their ordering process. read more

I took my parents here for lunch. It was our first time - and we all loved our food. I realized I should have ordered differently - like added more garnishes and such. But it was a nice place - the staff were friendly and patient with us. It was a Friday lunch rush but we still had a good experience. We saw these loaded wontons someone next to us got and I will def get those the next time I go. This is the kind of place you'd go to 3-4 times just to order things and get an idea of what's what. GREAT for Kalamazoo/Battle Creek area, so adjust your expectations accordingly. Umami Ramen is fusion-y to me because the flavors are lean a little bit Thai-like to me (perfect balance of sweet, sour & salty). Makes sense because the owner was born in Thailand! Although it's not "traditional" ramen, I really enjoyed my meal here. I had: *Brisket Ramen with Tonkotsu Broth with added pickled egg: The broth itself was pretty well-developed - you can tell some TLC went in it. I added a chili sauce that made my ramen a little bit tangy but I liked it. The brisket was perfect - very tender. I also liked that the pickled egg broke up some of the richness. It was a pretty big portion - couldn't finish all the noodles in it but you best believe I slurped up all the broth! *Spam Slider: It's exactly what it sounds like...spam in some bread (king's hawaiian I believe?) haha. You can also pick your own toppings on this. I chose the pickled vegetables to add some dimension. I am a spam fan, so this was also a winner in my book. I was indecisive and couldn't pick 1 of the 3 sauces so I asked for all 3 on the side - the guy working was so nice about it too. Favorite ended up being the horseradish mayo! Umami Ramen is a pretty small set up: you order & pay towards the back, move down the line like subway - where you can pick your toppings - and then they'll bring it out to you! Its gonna be unpopular based on the rest of the reviews..... Maybe I hit them on an off night, I don't know. We came in around 6, it was hot as heck in there, and very limited seating. A few in line, so we waited patiently. The Ramen was so-so, I didn't find it groundbreaking, and with the heat in there, I just wanted to be done with it...Table out front was taken and the one in the rear was sitting in the sun, so there weren't any options, other than to eat it. I'll hit the positives first. The staff are insanely friendly. I was waiting for my order and someone went up to the counter and had 4 different staff offer to help them not knowing they had already been taken care of. The shrimp roll (egg roll with ramen rather than cabbage) are super good. Better than the chicken. Let's be honest these are really burritos. I also got some pork belly ramen. Noddles are good and so was the pork belly. I just know now not to get with all the garnishing. I could do without the pickles and all the other pickled stuffs. Mizo broth was good. We tried the shrimp ramen egg roll, pretty much ramen and shrimp in the egg roll wrap, lacking flavor by itself so we dipped it in our broth, which helped. The loaded wontons is like nachos, very filling by itself! A picnic table right by the order window and 2 in their lot if the weather's nice, otherwise, they're only open for takeout. This is a hidden gem in Battle Creek! This was my first time visiting this restaurant and I've returned two additional times this week . The food that I was absolutely delicious and they have vegan options which is perfect for me. I ordered the bowl with Udon noodles,Miso broth and tofu. I added in garlic, kale, spinach, green peppers, the house sauce which is absolutely insanely delicious! I also ordered the loaded wontons (vegan option) which was heavenly & OMG delicious! The portion is more than enough for one person. Although the restaurant is very very small the food is on point & full of flavor. I only wish they had extended hours & weekend hours. I had to visit this place a second time before I left a review. Looking at the menu, I thought this food was a little beyond my comfort zone because I didn't know what to expect for varieties and flavors, but once I realized what the options actually are made of or made with, I actually like it! I have tried the pork wontons, which are like the equivalent of Asian nachos. Big, crunchy, fried wontons, topped with rice and beans and meat, drizzled in a couple of house sauces. There's no easy way to eat them except with your hands. Most recently I tried a ramen bowl. I've learned this is called Pho. This one is like loaded soup. Broth and noodles and lots of additions to really fill you up and add flavor. You get a lot of food for the money - the portions are big and you will leave feeling full. The staff is very appreciative of your business and is helpful to explain the food options. You order at the counter and someone brings your food to the table. Great ramen place in BC. They have great selection of items on the menu. We had ramen bowls. Tge flavors were fantastic. The portions were huge. The staff was friendly and courtious. They have a small sit down area inside. The service is quick and can get busy in the afternoon. I would give this place 5 stars but two things really i missed was 1. It was not in order. I get it. It was busy. But I expect it to be little cleaner. 2. There was no boba tea. I could live with my 1st complaint but 2nd is unacceptable. I have no idea why it took so long for me to try this place! I have heard nothing but rave reviews since Umami Ramen opened, finally hit it up for lunch today. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, making suggestions based on your taste and talking about the day's specials. I ended up with Curry Chicken on Ramen, which was amazing. Just the right amount of spice, soooooo delicious and flavorful. The portion was large enough that it took 10 hours for me to get hungry again. I couldn't resist finishing my meal even after I was full. If they were still open this late at night, I'd head back for more. The Thai boba iced tea really hit the spot. I'd go back just for another one of those. The restaurant was clean with a pleasant ambience. At least three members of the staff came over throughout the meal to make sure everything was perfect. Obviously this is a restaurant that takes pride in their food and service. Very pleased with my experience here and look forward to becoming a regular. read more
