Just moved to Somerville, got tired of the overpriced places in Davis. Walked by Rudy's, decided to pick up takeout tonight. Got two grilled chicken sandwiches, our substitutions were honored, the food was packaged great and all our sides were included- and it was good! We went out on a party bus (actually, trolley) last night for my friends birthday. The night ended with me puking on my shoes and taking a cab to my friend's apartment to sleep off the events of the evening. This afternoon when I woke up, after watching the Travel Channel for 2 hours, we decided to take a walk down to get some food. We ended up at Rudy's. This is the first time I had ever been here. The decor was great and the booths were comfortable. The windows are line with cacti, and the tile and clay walls give you the feel of an authentic Mexican restaurant. The service was okay, I never really expect much from lunch time service, but our waitress just was not that friendly. I understand if you hate your job, but try to have fun with it, or at least fake it. Due to the events of last night, I did not sample any alcoholic beverages. Usually my mantra is to start drinking ASAP when you have a hangover, but I just got not stomach it today. So you'll have to refer to other reviews if you are looking for information on the drinks. I got an iced tea that I could not get sweet enough, but that's fine. But the food. THE FOOD. I got combination plate number one, which came with one beef taco, a chicken enchilada, and a bean and cheese burrito. There was also a side of rice, as well as sour cream and guacamole. Our food came out SUPER fast, which was really impressive. Granted, we were pretty much the only ones in there eating, but it was still quick. The plates were hot as HADES so, don't touch your plate and also start eating the rice first while the rest of the food cools because you'll burn your mouth on anything else. Not a HUGE fan of beans but the bean and cheese burrito was actually pretty good, especially with the sour cream and guac. The chicken enchilada was alright, nothing really to extraordinary about it, same thing with the taco. But all of it together was really good, and exactly what I needed. The guac is really good, as is the rice. The fact that it all comes out PIPING hot is also a huge plus. I would definitely suggest this place if you're looking for some pretty good Mexican food. A great local spot for some delicious texmex! The portions for the combo plates were large and filling. Everything we got tasted fresh and made in-house. The drinks were made good and strong. Okay, let's get down to business. I've never heard of Rudy's until my boyfriend brought me there one day. And I'm glad he did because the food is pretty bomb. Right when you walk in, there's a bar right there, and further in, there's plenty of seating in the restaurant. The staff were awesome and friendly. Before ordering, you get a bowl of chips and salsa that they make in house. The queso dip is pretty good, and for someone who doesn't eat cheese, I can't get enough of it. As for food, I definitely recommend any the combo plates, which can include hard shelled tacos/enchiladas/chimichangas/burritos. All with rice and beans and salsa. Overall, I have yet to be disappointed. Though there are other places I'd rather have fajitas at, Rudy's is somewhere I'll go if I'm in the area. Forget those chain restaurants. 4.5/5.0 read more

Lots of cheese and oil made it hard to eat the meal. We weren't expecting healthy food. Still it was just way too much. The prices seem high for what this is. Drinks were all ice. It's baffling how easy it is to forget Rudy's isn't a chain. At least, the worst parts of a chain. And I can't even tell you how painful it is to say this, having such a warm and fuzzy environment constantly packed with neighboring Somervillains and Medfordites. Easily the worst fish tacos I've eaten, the $13 plate carried scraps of fried cod buried under mounds - MOUNDS! - of iceberg lettuce, green-red tomatoes and a flavorless, I don't know, emulsion haphazardly spurted over cold, dry tortillas. Saving grace may be the well-made margaritas, but the pour is so minute, the otherwise iced up "cheap" drinks can rack up real quick. I've been three times, the latter two anticipating some rectifying experience to prove the previous visit was a fluke. Instead, I get the same bland food and disinterested service. Hey, at least they charge $3 for chips and salsa! Ugh. With Zocalo, Tu y Yo and even Anna's so close by, methinks Rudy has swung thrice and struck out watching. read more

Welcome to my Boston newbie review of Rudy's. Take it with a grain of salt and possibly a few shots of hard liquor. So I went out with some Tufts med students tonight for some grub. We decided on Rudy's because it was convenient and we'd never been there before. Apparently your experience is significantly magnified if you go with someone that's been there frequently and knows which dishes are good and which should be carted off to a landfill immidiately. If you go in blindly you could easily get the short end of the stick and accidentally order the infamous fish taco. Rudy's is supposed to be Tex-Mex, but it's more like Tex-Mass. I just had the cheapest thing on the menu (Chimichanga 7.49), and it was pretty good if you don't mind sloppy food. The service and comfortableness of Rudy's is definitely the strong point of the whole package. By the time we walked in to the time we started eating our food, it was probably 25 minutes tops. Even if there is a wait for a table, there's a small bar up front to grab some drinks. Also having a fireplace right next to our table was a nice touch. Rudy's is a decent little place if you got someone that knows the dishes there. Or just forget the food and go for the drinks. The atmosphere is nice enough as it is to have a good time. read more

So I am finding that Boston likes Tex-Mex a lot more than regular Mexican food....I guess because Texas is a little closer? Well this place at least will get me a good margarita. And their house margaritas are pretty cheap too!! This place is always full of people, so I wouldn't come here with a big group without being willing to wait a little bit for that margarita. I can't believe that even a handful of people are hating on Rudy's. This place is so tasty and delicious...and at a reasonable price too! Sure, parking can be tricky and it does tend to get crowded, but I have zero complains about food and service. Their nachos are to die for, the enchilada sample plate is fabulous and the tacos and burritos are great. (This, of course, if not your traditional Mexican, but more Tex-Mex.) Service is quick and I've always had waitstaff that was friendly. And getting a seat by the firepit on a cold day might be my own little slice of heaven (especially after walking the mile to get there in some bitter weather). read more

Ok so I wasn't expecting A+ Mexican food at a place called "Rudy's". However it was decent, not very authentic, but was able to satisfy my tex-mex cravings. The menu was extensive. A lot of Mexican flavors blended in with traditional American food. Margaritas are a huge factor when reviewing Mexican restaurants, but since it was Sunday at 4PM (prime grandma time), i had to go against ordering a margarita (so sad, I know). For an appetizer my date and I had argued about the taco skins ( I think thats what they were called) which were essentially potato skins with a mexican flare, versus buffalo wings. Somehow, it came down to the buffalo wings, and they were surprisingly awesome. Really really hot, and trust me, I can handle hot. Our server also brought out some chips and salsa, and hey, you can't really complain about that. For my entree I went with fajitas, as I always do. I asked to have it mixed with chicken and steak. The slices of chicken were much to large, and the steak was shaved which I'm never down for. I thought it was kinda of weird. Also, the fajitas didn't come with beans, which are supposed to basically be the glue that holds the tortilla together. So I got charged when I asked for beans since they were a "side item". BULL. Besides the weird steak incident and bean issues, the fajitas we okay. HUGE portions. I ended up having lunch for the next day. The service was fast and got the job done. Nothing really to brag about though. If this place wasn't down the street, I probably would head elsewhere for my Mexican cravings. read more

I still love Rudy's. I will always love Rudy's. I showed up on Sunday before they even opened and it was freezing out! The nice manager working let me come in and hang out and warm up. Four gals had a great lunch that included lots of JC Margaritas (my new fave, love the cranberry)! We got some chips and salsa and queso to start. The queso is the liquid cheese crack that you must get, if you don't get it and you are with me, I will want to never eat here with you again. Then I got a huge huge huge taco salad. The size was similar to a newborn baby. It had grilled chicken, greens, shredded cheese, homemade guacamole, sour cream and the vessel it came in was a huge flour taco shell. I loved it. We will make this gals lunch a regular thing now. The music was great too, Bettye LaVette was the CD that was playing, the nice manager showed me her CD. I went here a few nights ago with a boy--let's call him "Date"--to unwind after a hectic work day and slightly sauce ourselves with margaritas. I deliberately ate only a chicken sandwich for breakfast/lunch in order to leave my stomach in the best possible position for a fabulously decadent tex-mex meal. So, suffice to say, I WANTED to have a satisfying meal. And suffice to say, Rudy's was fine. Not super, not Border Cafe, but decent. The margaritas were a little syrupy (particularly Date's prickly pear), but they hit the spot...a spot that was, of course, basically the broad side of a barn. The fajitas were passable (though didn't arrive on the trademark sizzling, snapping skillet you know you'll burn yourself on), guac was happily served with everything, and, as Date commented, as long as there was a crispy-at-the-edges pool of melted orange cheese obfuscating his burrito or chimichanga or whatever was hiding under there, then this Americanized tex-mex restaurant was okay by him. My one actual gripe, though--no free bottomed or bottomless chips and salsa. Take a page from Border, yo, and clean up your act. read more

Rudy's is a great spot for a Tex-Mex meal. The restaurant is cute, small and simply decorated. There a great selection of margaritas that are strong, delicious and pretty cheap. Try the Horny Toad--yummy! The staff is friendly and the food comes out pretty fast. The black bean nachos is a great starter. The crab quesadillas (with spinach) were huge, delicious and super tasty! The combo platter with guac taco, mini bean burrito and cheese enchiladas is great and super cheap! The brownie sunday is pretty good--it hits the sweet spot. Overall a great place for tasty and cheap Tex-Mex food, strong margaritas and quick dinner. I went here tonight with Jesse and Dorian, and we were all starving. We had intended on going to the Border Cafe in Harvard, but when parking seemed like not a feasible option over in that direction, Jesse mentioned going here and we ventured to Teele Square. We found parking immediately, and were seated right away, which is always awesome when starving. Also, the prices are very reasonable, which is awesome. We ordered an order of the large black bean nachos, and while things with black beans aren't usually my jam, I really dug these ones. We also ordered a side of guacamole, which was out of this world good. Definitely the best I've had in the area that didn't cost a million dollars. We ordered a few margaritas and mine were the Ol' Blu, which was, not surprisingly, blue in color, and then I had a prickly pear margarita, which was way too sweet. Definitely stick with the classics. We walked up the stairs into our house commenting on slight drunkenness post dinner, though. I ordered the combo #1. I have to say, while it was delicious, I think that the nachos are really where it's at. And did I mention that they have jalapeno poppers? I didn't order any, but that's an excellent option to have. My entree came with a beef taco, a bean and cheese mini burrito, and a chicken enchilada. The highlight was the beef taco, served in a crunchy shell. Also a bonus: the entrees are served with a scoop of guacamole as well, versus having to order it on the side. I also tried Dorian's enchilada platter, which was really just cheese and sauce because she's a vegetarian, but it was deliciously cheesy regardless. A decent margarita. Finally. Served in a pint glass with enough tequilla that you can ACTUALLY taste it (too many margaritas lately that are all mix...) And this, my friends, was the highlight of my trip to Rudy's. The food... eh... it's mexican. Not a lot of flavor in those tacos. I had the Taco Sampler... none of the tacos were anything special. The portion sizes, though, are better than usual, and they have sweet potato fries... If you're in the Teele Square area, and you're experiencing an out of control craving for Mexican... or any sort of a craving for a margarita, Rudy's is there for you. I had high hopes for Rudy's. It's right down the street, the reviews were pretty good, and I had a $10 off coupon. The architecture both inside and out make this place look very intriguing and potentially awesome. But the decour is not so impressive. We ordered the black bean nachos to start with. Despite the iffy corn chips, the nachos were pretty tasty. Lots of beans, just the right amount of cheese and other toppings. However the meal that followed was less than impressive. My eating companion had the spinach quesadilla- which sounds like it could be one of those really great "different" meals- but said they weren't very satisfying. The spinach was either cooked too much or from a can; either way not so good. I had the Combination Plate One which included a beef taco, a cheese enchilada, and a mini bean & cheese burrito. The taco was definitly something I could make at home (not bad but hardly worth mentioning), the bean & cheese burrito and the enchilada were both pretty bland. I could hardly tell the difference between the two. And the rice didn't have much flavor either. And my chambord margarita.... so sad. I'm not sure if it was cheap tequila or just bad mixing but I was disappointed. Over all, if I was invited to go there with friends, I'd go to be with my friends. Rudy's --no matter what you read here -- is not a dive. SH*t ,its nicer than 80% of places to eat around Boston decor-wise and from a menu standpoint. The bathrooms are clean with doors on them for Christ's sake. Its sort of simple, cheesy and as Mexican as a Cinco de Mayo celebration in Boston gets. Of note, Teal Square the bastard stepchild of Davis to begin with doesn't get its props but Rudy's really should shine a bright light on the area. A mere 5 minute walk to the redline. Now the food isn't even vaguely Mexican or even Tex-Mex. Its, you know, Masshole Mexican. Nothing hot, there is no hot sauce on the table and the waitresses are from Medford. However I can only think of 2 places in a hundred mile radius that serve something akin to authentic Mexican food anyways so why make that the standard. However, its got a nice atmosphere. A good vibe with good people. The staff is attentive. The food, again while not Mexican is pretty damn good. Everything is delivered fresh, well prepared so what's to really bitch about? They have the south of the borders beers everyone loves, a good tequila selection, decent margaritas and the prices are damn good. I love the Velveeta based queso --it rocks and goes great with ....well it goes great with EVERY FOOD AND DRINK IN THE WORLD. And the best part, its not some craptastic chain. Its a local place so support it. There is a nice mix of the sexes as well, so go to Rudy's get hammered, well fed and perhaps wake up with a hangover, a cold sore and a damn good story. read more

Amazing margaritas. Check out the Caliente: super spicy and hot and full of amazingness. The combo plates are huge and a good deal - and always served exceedingly hot. I mean really - who wants cold Tex Mex? Eww. People bitch about the salsa, but I like it. It tends to be better in the summer than the winter though. Maybe it's a fresh veggie/quality thing. Really good cheap Mexican restaurant. Better alternative to Border Cafe. The pina colada is fantastic and will get you in the right mood. The jalapenos poppers are a great appetizer too. The plates are huge too so make sure you're very hungry before going in. The staff are very good too. Slightly worse than Border Cafe in Harvard Square and no better than Margarita's in Waltham. I wouldn't go on a date here unless it was date #1005. So, yes, we'd be probably be married by that point (we'd have been dating approx 19 years) and maybe even have a kid or two. And they might not seat us in the promised "twenty minutes" and the kid might get hungry and eat all his raisins and then when we were seated the kid wouldn't be hungry, but I certainly would be and I'd order my regular fish tacos and wolf them down with only half an eye on the kid and he'd smear sour cream everywhere and throw beans on the floor. And younger people on dates #1-55 would look askance at us. But I'd just order a second margarita and smile. Because why are you going on date here? You are young, live a little. Try something strange and lovely. Not this. Despite the chaos at my own table, I would note that the fish tacos had, possibly, the least amount of heat, spice or flavor of any fish tacos heretofore ordered in New England. Honestly, it was like a big old pile of actual New England coleslaw there on the plate, on top of some very firmly fried fish, which is not how I like it at all. So I'm not an Mexican food aficionado like some of my Cali/Tex native friends so don't expect any criticisms of authenticity here. Visited this place for a late lunch early diner yesterday and was impressed again. Consistently good food at a great price, just a brief walk from Davis Square & T. Great margaritas with an extensive tequila list and a fun atmosphere for neighborhood drinks during the work week. I ordered the Tex-Mex Combo Plate 1 for the third time and left with a doggy bag, a satiated Tex-Mex craving, and cash to spare. Rudy's came through again with a hot, cheesy, mess of Tex-Mex wonderfulness on a plate: Beans, rice, an enchilada, burrito, and a taco topped with fresh guac and sour cream. Would definitely recommend this place! One more thing, it does get pretty crowded around dinner time, so be ready for a wait, usually around 20-30 min. for a larger table. After one visit to Rudy's you'll quickly become a regular. The food tastes great and their prices are fairly reasonable. Rudy's offers up some of the best tacos around and has a highly addictive queso dip. The taco sampler is a great dish for newbies and their fried ice cream rolled in cornflakes makes for a tasty dessert. The wait staff is friendly and usually gets your order right. It's a small place in Teal Sq. so parking can be an issue. Rudy's gets packed on the weekend but you can normally grab a table on an off night without having to wait. Rudy's is a great place for a quick delicious dinner. The Good: The tacos are outstanding. The bad: Sometimes they bring your meal out five seconds after bringing out your appetizer. Rudy's makes me miss my days as a Somerville citizen. It was a great meeting point even for those people who didn't live in Somerville, since parking is relatively easy in Teele Square. Drinks are free flowin', but the real reason to go to Rudy's is the spinach quesadilla. It's crammed full of spinach - delicious! And there's smoked gouda in there. SInce eating it my first time, i have tried to recreate this wonderfulness and failed at each and every attempt. The other reason to visit is that the food is cheap -- or at least a good deal. I am not a fan of Rudy's. I want to like it, since it's right in my neighborhood and I'm all about supporting local businesses. I just cannot jump on the Rudy's bandwagon. First gripe: they charge you for chips and salsa. Unacceptable, Mr. Rudy, unacceptable. I understand that at places where there is no explicit charge for chips and salsa, you still end up paying for it when you get your entrée. But it's not like the entrées are Rudy are particularly cheap -- in fact, given the persistent averageness of the food, I would say the entrées are a little overpriced. The drinks here are alright, I suppose. Both times I stopped by, I ordered margaritas. Both times I was completely underwhelmed. If you're in the mood for Mexican, you'd be much better off walking down the street and going to Tu Y Yo. That place is legit. However, I can appreciate that sometimes you just need a burrito, refried beans, and some tequila. No shame in that. Still, Rudy's wouldn't be my first choice. *shrug* read more

The fish tacos were slightly disappointing as they were treated like any other taco, instead of a crisp slaw and lime for example. The saddest part of the dining experience: the margaritas. FLAN IS BACK!!! Yeah I said it FLAN IS BACK!!! It's been about 5 years since they took flan off of their dessert menu and I've missed it for all of those 5 years. But no more! I know it's just custard but there is something about flan that really blows my hair back. Fresh whipped cream and caramelesque drizzle accouterment is one of my favs of all time. Rudy's has been our staple Tex-Mex restaurant for as long as we've been here. A little dark and chilly inside, the atmosphere is fun and a bit loud, great for a fun night out or families. The food's delicious, the prices are very reasonable (especially for the ginormous portions - I have never left without leftovers), and they have great a great tequila selection and margaritas. I don't want to say the waitress is racism, but I am the only Asian girl and she barely served me. She did it so obviously. Rudy's is one of those places that tastes better if you go in looking for good food rather than good Mexican food. Get the difference? This is not authentic by any means. But that doesn't mean it's bad. In fact, I've quite enjoyed all of my meals at Rudy's. You must start with the chips and guacamole, the chips are nice and salty, and the guacamole is some of the best I've had in the area. Ask for hot sauce, and they'll bring you a whole selection. You'll need these to spice up the bland salsa. On to the meal. I've found that Rudy's shines in the places that you wouldn't really expect them to. The Super Taco Salad? A massive portion of greens, crisp veggies, cheese, salsa, sour cream, guacamole, and juicy grilled chicken piled high on a fried shell. Big enough for at least two meals, make sure you ask them to go light on the cheese, unless of course, you REALLY like cheese. The quesadillas are different than what you expect, and this serves to make them better than you'd expect. The spinach quesadilla is kicked up with chipotles, then smoothed out with feta. And the BBQ pork is thick chopped pulled pork, smothered in a spicy BBQ sauce, then grilled to goodness inside a cheesy tortilla. Again, not authentic, but apparently nobody told that to my taste buds. The beverages are good. You can get pretty cheap wine (big house red for around $15 a bottle....only a few dollars mark up from the liquor store, so no complaints there) in addition to some well made cocktails. I was recently at Rudy's and my table ordered several appetizers to munch on instead of separate meals. We had the buffalo wings (very wet and messy, but appropriately spicy), the Mexican Pizza (the large size isn't very large, but we didn't finish it - it's mostly chili and gets soggy quickly), Chips and Salsa & Guacamole (pretty standard - the guacamole is very good - I recommend getting the chips and guacamole with a side of salsa instead of the other way around, because of pricing loopholes), and the Taco Skins (also mostly chili, and pretty mediocre in my book). Why Rudy's uses so much chili instead of other Mexican-style food is beyond me, but it seems like a poor choice to use it in so many appetizer dishes. I had a red wine sangria with my "dinner" and it was also mediocre, but served in a pint glass anything tastes a little better. More bang for your buck! Rudy's is really tasty, what can I say? I used to have mixed feelings but I have grown to really appreciate it. The chips and Queso are FREAKIN' AMAZING. The salsa is super fresh. The drinks range from super girly to really manly (jalapeno margarita). They are all tasty. And, for the cocktail culture people out there, this is a tequilla bar. Tried and true. You go there to enjoy...not to try "the next big thing". My suggestion would be to go tex mex...don't get the grilled shrimp or some "authentic mexican dish"...get the tacos...get the enchilladas...get the chimichangas. Stay away from the burrito. Anna's has that covered. You don't need to be waited on to get an epic burrito. Prices are reasonable depending on what you get. For instance, the taco combo (combo 4, maybe?) is an insane deal. I went to Rudy's with 5 friends on Thursday evening. It has a fun, casual atmosphere with a curtain at the entrance and some couches and chairs in the small bar/waiting area, giving it a Southwest dorm room feel. I had fish tacos. The first thing I noticed is how they staged the meal on a small plate to give that appearance of a large meal. That made it difficult to move food around and cut up my meal. The condiments on the plate get all over the taco shell so forget about picking it up with your hands. A few of my friends ordered the combo plates and they were literally out of the oven. One friend even scalded her arm -- so be careful! I came close to going 2-star with Rudy's but I had a great time with my friends that evening so they lucked out and I rounded up. read more

Its TEX MEX, not mexican, but I'll forgive you. Carne chili nachos. Although tasty, not what I was hoping for. Melted cheese and loaded with chili. I was hoping for the loaded nachos with fresh lettuce and pico or chopped tomato, black olives, etc. The chili was good with alot of meat and hints of beer. Enchilada plate was meh, chimichanga was better. Margaritas were ok, could have been a bit stronger. Overall A-OK for tex-mex, 2.5 stars. Just don't come here expecting great Mexican cuisine. read more
