Solid dive bar in the 'Burg. Rudy's has cheap brews and strong drinks. If you want the vibe that you are a local, come to Rudy's. However you will feel a bit out of place. The hot dogs are well known and everyone sitting at the bar will be eating one at some point in the evening. Even if the staff says they don't have them - they probably do. :) Also be sure to order their "bar shrimp" aka Cheetos. You can't go wrong with beer and Cheetos. Oh, Rudy's, where do I even begin? To say this place is a dive is a bit of an understatement. I may be aging myself a bit to say that back in my day, drafts were a dollar. $1.25 is still pretty damned cheap though. That's not a special that's just the regular price. Mixed drinks are cheap too. Rudy's has a small grill menu of cheap and dependable bar food. Of course the true star is the super, a hot dog wrapped in cheese and bacon, which us 2 bucks and change. Rudy's gets absolutely packed weekend nights during the school year and takes on a frat party vibe, as do most bars in town. However while rowdy the crowd rarely veers to the aggressive d-bag type. Get there early and try to stake your claim to the large corner booth and or the megatouch machine. Bartenders are great. I stopped by recently and even though I'd moved out of the area about 7 years prior, the bartender recognized me. And cheap. Oh, Rudy's. You with your good food for low prices and cheap, cheap beer. Drafts are a dollar and a quarter. You won't find that in many places in the 'burg that you'd ever want to go back to. The food, be it the aforementioned Super or Cajun Chicken Sandwiches, or even simple burgers, are found for a fraction of the price at some other joints. They don't serve focaccia or paninis or whatever is the "hip" way food is being served, they do it the simple way. The time-honored way. The Rudy's way. People call Rudy's a dive. No. It simply dispenses with some of the modern trappings that suck the soul and character out of bars. Like credit card machines. Only cold, hard, currency is allowed in this joint. It doesn't matter. I've gone in there at all times of day and night and have always found the bartenders friendly and efficient and the rest of the customers, be they local retirees or fresh faced college kids, to be sociable and welcoming. My sister and dad who went to ESU love this place. They usually get the supers (hot dog wrapped in bacon and filled with cheese) I had a Cajun chicken sandwich which was essentially a chicken breast on a bun. Nothing special pretty much a local dive bar. Certainly could be cleaner however the bar and food areas appear clean and could use some updating as it has become very tired over the years. Staff is friendly but does cater to the regulars. The food is typical bar fair but actually pretty good and inexpensive. There is off street parking but that is limited. Dive bar and will never change. I found about about Rudy's when I just got out of college and moved into the area. The beer is cold, the bartenders are professional and you will never beat the prices. The bacon wrapped hotdogs are both amazing and legendary. I was having Thanksgiving later with some family friend and my parents' 60 year old friend started telling me about how great Rudy's was in the 60's. I used to drop in here occasionally when I lived on campus at ESU. Back than it was more of a suitcase college and my friends would go home most weekends. Its a cute place with lots of character! It is really more of a neighborhood bar in my opinion. Sure, its a but dated but I wouldnt really call it a dive. I noticed immediately that everyone knew each other. The Bartenders were polite, friendly & efficient. They take to engage you in conversation in between the customer orders. I struck up a conversation with several people at the U shaped bar. All of them were very person time able & friendly & unafraid to offer historical & sightseeing info on the area. There's an electronic jukebox (touch tunes) that offers a varied selection of great music. You can download the app onto your iphone & load tunes directly from there. I bought some of their local bar delicacies: a bag of Martin's popcorn which was delish & a bargain at a buck. Their bacon wrapped grilled hot dogs looked pretty tasty & the patrons swear by them.
