Let me start off by saying that I'm not from Austin so I had to thoroughly read through numerous reviews on many different salons in Austin before I even considered booking an appt with Jack Ruiz. I was a bit scared of what was going to go down because I've honestly never had a salon experience so this was my first and I must say it was pretty sweet! Also it had been a year and a half since my last cut so I was looking to get something other than a Sports Clip cut. I called last Tuesday 7/29/08 around 4pm and was expecting to have an appt on Tuesday however to my surprise they had an opening at 9:00 pm so I said what the heck and booked it. I showed at 8:45 and was greeted by a very nice guy who gave me a tour and offered me complimentary wine, as well as the option for assorted coffees, warm tea, and bottled water. Once my small tour was over I sat anxiously in the waiting room for my stylist. My stylist was about 15 mins late which I did not mind. She sat me down and thoroughly asked me several questions as to what kind of style I was looking for......we then proceeded to the wash area where it was nicely dim for relaxation. The stylist massaged my head and also gave me a mini facial as she called it. From there she took me back to the chair where she promised me she wouldn't rush my cut just because it was late and after closing time by now. SHE KEPT HER WORD!!!! She got started on my cut around 10:30 and I was out the door at 11:30 an hour and a half after closing. Needless to say I am extremely happy with my cut!! Oh and the hand massage was a nice lil extra. I can't say all the stylists are as good as the one I had however this stylist has set the bar extremely high for this establishment! My hair was completely ruined by another salon on Tuesday, and I was absolutely devastated. The wonderful folks at Jackson Ruiz squeezed me into the schedule and spent a marathon 6.5 hours taking painstaking and loving care of my hair. Vanessa cut my hair and the cut is absolutely beautiful, and Lindsay did the color. I couldn't say enough positive things about the outcome and the perfect color my hair is now. Lindsay did a phenomenal job, and I really loved that when she had questions she asked her fellow stylists for their opinion to make sure she was minimizing extra/unnecessary steps but still exactly achieving my goal. These wonderful ladies were working on my hair until 30 min after closing time, and I would recommend them to literally anyone looking for quality work. I moved to Austin two years ago and was so worried about finding a new salon in a new city. I tried quite a few colorists and hair stylists with no real luck. A friend recommended Ruiz Salon and I couldn't be happier. I am a blonde that likes her highlights and a cute new haircut every six weeks or so. I have been seeing Laken for my color and Sharon for my haircuts and wouldn't change a thing. They listened to what I wanted and offered great recommendations for getting my hair healthier. The salon is very clean and people are always around to help book your next appointment and get you some coffee. The Aveda products they use smell amazing and the scalp massages are THE BOMB!!! Staff was super nice however I went here to get a blow out which anywhere I've ever been means you can select a style and they are able to do that for you. I asked for lots of curls and volume. When my stylist was done I had volume but no curl. She told me to add curl would be an additional $25. So for $45 I got a blow dry. Even when she could tell my disappointment her offer was to tell me how to do it myself with my curling iron because I didn't want to pay extra. All in all disappointing. First experience: I booked my appointment online. When I got there, it turned out that I apparently they are a "specialized" salon where stylists either cut or color hair, not both. I wasn't expecting that, but was still going to roll with it. When it was time for my appointment, my stylists said that I hadn't booked enough time online. They made me wait 45 minutes for another appointment to finish before starting mine. This was a weekday and I was obviously frustrated having to wait even longer to begin. They should really have you call for your first appointment. The stylist did a good job. They of course try to sell you Aveda products, but that's to be expected. The atmosphere is relaxing and upscale. Second experience: they were 20 minutes late to start my appointment, which was frustrating. The colorist did a good job as well as the hair cutter. I will be back but am hoping that the timing aspect is finally right. read more

I've been in Austin for nearly 4 years and have just in the last six months finally found a hair salon that I like enough to return to over and over again. I went there almost on a whim about six months ago in desperate need of a haircut. I ended up seeing Angela and she is the best hair stylist I have ever had. First of all, she actually took time to talk to me as soon as I arrived about my hair - what was I looking for in a cut, how much time do I spend styling, what types of products etc. I use. Second, the aromatics that they use when washing your hair are to die for! Their hair wash area is so relaxing and I have almost fallen asleep in the chair whenever I've been there. Finally, Angela gave me a great cut that was exactly what I wanted. I get so many compliments on my hair and everyone always asks where I get it styled. Plus, you can get an appointment as early as 7:15AM or as late as 9 or 10PM. You can always work them into your schedule and once you're an established client you can book or revise an appointment online. read more

Having a natural redhead who wants to play around with color in the red family is no short order. Last night I went to have my color corrected and when the neutralizer left me feeling like a duller version of my natural self (I cried, and I'm not proud of it) the manager met me at the front almost as if she intuitively knew (it could have been the tears, but I didn't have to track her down or have my colorist go and get her for me) and graciously reinforced their commitment to providing me with the results I desired. So I went to Jackson Ruiz year's ago and it was a so-so experience. About 6 weeks ago I needed a hair cut, a really good hair cut. I discussed my needs with the receptionist. I explained I have curly hair and I need someone who knows curly hair (ethnic mix type). They hooked me up with Bianca. OMG!! I got the best hair cut....EVER!! I haven't been this happy with my hair in so long. She listened and shaped it so that I really don't have to do much with it. I liked it so much I went back for more just a few days ago. I moved to SF for work and made it a priority to see her when I was in town. I can't believe I found her and now I'm in SF. It breaks my heart to write this but I have repeatedly been disappointed each of the 4 times I've been there. I followed a stylist (Jessica) to Jackson Ruiz from the JR Salon, because she is an incredibly talented stylist. BUT each time I've been there were problems with having to reschedule my appointment or being rushed into and out of my appointment. IF I go again (it's been over a year) I will HAVE To insist that Jessica is not double booked or 45 minutes behind schedule or trying to work someone in - on my time. She's great at what she does, but for the money paid, I expect not to be treated like chattel. This review is about when I was going to my high school prom several years ago. For the beginning of the day the lady with the longer brown hair and a thin body was okay as far as listening to my needs and attempting to do the easiest half up half down hair-do ever. I'm not sure how but she completely messed it all up so horribly I started crying. She was taking so long that I began running late. She made my hair look like I had just finished working out with sweat all in my hair and then attempted to put it back without brushing it. It looked super messy and had a lot of bumps in it. She had worn my hair out to the point that it wouldn't curl right either. I was seriously frustrated. Had she been having a difficult time doing my hair only that would be alright. However, she gave me attitude since I had asked her to fix it and then preceded to say: "Ughh I don't need this, I have another client coming today. This is not worth my time." Well I have news for you, It wasn't worth my time either!!!!!! The manager quickly stepped in after he heard her attitude and fixed my hair the way I had been asking. It seriously took him 15 minutes. I paid full price and left. With this experience alone on a hair do I would NEVER EVER EVER get my hair cut here. I hope this was helpful. read more

I've been seeing Jordyn since she first started here, and she is just fantastic. I'm the person who doesn't know exactly how to describe what I'm looking for and Jordyn just knows. She works with my natural wavy hair (vs trying to manage it to a different state of being), and up until recently, Jackson Ruiz allowed a free back/side touch up between appointments (which is great when you have short hair; it's only $20 now and still worth it). Jackson Ruiz has great service. I had my haircut once by another staff, which ended up not being what I wanted, and they really stepped up to make it right. It's easy to schedule and reschedule. On top of good salon skills, there's the perk of something to drink (tea, wine, fancy water), a makeup touchup on your way out, and a hand massage. It's a pampering experience that's still affordable with everything considered. If you go, I highly recommend Jordyn for both her skills, personality, and ability to remember you (both for hair and whatever you spoke about at your last appointment). read more

I have to take away stars though for how much they charge--even if they don't accept tip or offer you a "discount" for coming back within three weeks. Worst haircut I have ever had! Literally, do not waste your money on this place! Went here after a friend recommended it for her highlights she gets here. The location is great, the front desk guy wAs nice, and the wine they offered was great! But let's face it....you go to a salon and expect them to know how to give a basic haircut...left there with my hair choppy and uneven! I would call and have someone fix it....but 1. I literally don't trust this salon to be able to fix it...and 2. I'm getting married in 3 months and would rather let it look like crap and grow back....then to let them chop off even more to try and fix it. Made an appointment...hair stylist was 25 min late. Doubt she had any experience, she could barely hold her sizzors without fumbling them....sad day for this Aveda salon! I will never send you referrals! read more

It had been a long time since my last haircut, and my dry, long, wavy hair was looking so scraggly, and was impossible to style. I had a great first experience at Ruiz Salon last fall with Alex, but not so much my second time through. Alex wasn't available, so I booked with Stephanie. I wanted to take some length off and add some layers, and I showed her the shortest I wanted to go in the front. I was unsure on how many layers I wanted in the back or if I wanted to do a long a-line, but a lot of the time when I'd ask her what she thought would look good, she wouldn't answer or said something to make me feel kind of stupid. I know a customer who's wishy washy can be annoying, but the stylist is there to help guide us with their knowledge-- I literally didn't know what would look better. Now my haircut came out really cute, but it's literally two inches shorter than I told her I wanted it. Not cool. I said I wasn't ready to make the super short hair jump and wanted it to my collarbone in the front. I didn't complain at the time because it was too late. Can't put length back on. For a $55 haircut, I expect more. I'll definitely be coming back to see Alex in the future, but a two inch difference with a short cut is just really not okay, even if it's a good cut. read more

I consider going to the get my hair cut a treat, therefore I have high expectations of a Salon. The salon needs to be conveniently located and have a nice ambiance, the service professionals need to be just that 'professionals', my experience needs to be mine, meaning the salon should not be so crowded that I can hear everyone else's conversations and most importantly the stylist needs to be properly skilled. Good quality hair products and other beauty goodies are nice to have available for purchase. My daughter and I both had our hair cut at Jackson Ruiz by Angela. She is awesome! First and foremost, she listens to the client and really tries to understand what they want to achieve. Ever had a hair stylist cut your hair the way they wanted it vs. the way you wanted it? Not with Angela... she listened to my concerns and gave me an awesome haircut. She is precise and takes her time to do it right. She is also very professional... no snootiness and no unnecessary chatter. I am not a huge Aveda fan so I don't usually buy their products. Angela will suggest a few products but she is not at all pushy. Both of us enjoyed our salon visit and came out loving our hair. I think we finally found our Salon and our stylist! read more

So disappointed. They were my favorite and I wrote a review before talking about their greatness. But they had just won back my business after losing it. The great scalp and neck massage was done subpar and the hand massage was skipped entirely. I felt less and less appreciated for being a loyal customer. Then my stylist left... they found me another and after the first great appointment (which I wrote the favorable review for) she left. And when I was setting up for my "free" trim I was told they were no longer free. Then add a shitty experience with a rude front desk person and I'm done. There is just no reason for me to go back. I pay way too much as a man there to deal with shitty front desk personnel and to try to break in a new stylist. I've found much better consistent service elsewhere. read more

BEST EXPERIENCE. I called yesterday at 6pm, after being recommended by a friend to go here, and was able to come in at 8:45 for a haircut. Talk about super convenient. I got a trim and some fridge added to my do. Over all great experience - hand massage included. I was happy with my cut and the stylist recommended products that were actually useful for my hair type. And for a great price, my cut was only $55 and I had a coupon.
