I returned a shampoo I opened from them and it was flat. I had never heard of shampoo going bad but he said I bought it a year ago to the tune of $35.00 and I should just throw it in the garbage! I have had 2 really bad haircuts in my 52 years on this planet . Both oddly enough were male stylists I have or HAD beautiful long thick hair I now have thick choppy textured short layers and long at the back . Sort of 80s mullet I have to wear it in a ponytail for 1 month and it looks like it ll be maybe 6 more months before I can begin to get rid of the chopped / cracked hair . One of the best salons in Austin. It can seem a bit expensive but they are so friendly and professional. I have long hair and Bastien understood exactly what I wanted to do with it. It's been 3 months that he gave me a haricut and my hair still looks amazing (with layers still showing :) ) . The color is still stunning too. Those people are not the type of haidressers that do lazy work that looks good for a few weeks but then you have to get a new haircut because they don't think about the long-term. This review is specifically for Lyndsey Wright. I have gone to Lyndsey for almost 14 years. She recently made the move to Dessange Paris from having her own space. I love her. She has always done an excellent job with my color. The few times I strayed from going to Lyndsey, I was always disappointed. In my defense, I had moved out of Austin a couple of times over the years and I wasn't able to make it back each time to get my color done. But any chance I did, i would always make an appointment with her. She is always up to date on new trends and techniques and will always listen to what i want. I've never had her cancel an appointment and she is always punctual. I went on a day that the owner was out of town so I can't comment on him. The salon, however, was well designed and elegant. This will be long, but worth the read :) I had an appointment at another salon nearby (I'm new to Austin and looking for a new salon), and was unable to be seen that day (but that's another review). Sitting in the parking lot, I decided to yelp for other salons nearby and found Dessange (with great reviews) and decided to give them a call. The 1st person I spoke to at that the front desk was amazingly caring, she understood my situation (with the other salon) and told me to drive on over. I was there in 5 min and she immediately knew I was the lady that called in, and had me sitting in my consultation chair in no time. Oh and let me tell you, the salon was busy. They still made time for me :) 2nd and 3rd ladies I meet are Katie and Tiffany. They listened to what I was hoping to achieve, provided realistic advice and offered to work me into their schedule on the spot. Did I say they were busy? Oh yes, but the whole time I never felt rushed or left unattended. Tiffany gave me a fantastic haircut. She's confident and that confidence is well deserved. Katie fixed my haircolor, it's perfect now! Me entire experience, starting with the initial phone call was simply amazing. Everyone went above and beyond and for that I'm very grateful. When I was checking in today and saw only 2 reviews and they were bad... my jaw dropped! I was referred here and have had nothing but a great experience. I use Laurent for cuts and Monique for color and both have done a great job, have awesome recommendations that keep within my style and preference and with what's newer in the hair scene. While I never comment on other's posts, I have to admit Megan R. made an effort to put 1 review, for this place only, and then a link to the same woman's blog complaining about this place, but if you notice she's written about them since 2009, and went back again! Nuf' said.... As for nic r.: I can only guess that was a bad day for everyone there as I've never seen anything 'snobbish' about them, and YES they are French! Hence that the salon is Parisian? As for the color recommendation, that may not have been your taste, but if you don't speak up, no colorist or hair dresser can help you... With that, if you are xenophobic, I wouldn't suggest Dessange, they are almost all French stylists. (and if you have no idea what that means, you probably shouldn't go here anyway). I love that they are French, the technique is European,which is the most up to date technique and it works for me and my friends! ( and my super curly haired friend is the one who recommended this guy to me, so he works on BOTH straight AND curly hair) Plus listening to them say things in French makes me all gooey, and feel so sheik! (silly I know, just love Paris) Quick note on that: Laurent never talks 'around' me in French, (IE: asian nail places, I swear they are talking 'stuff' about me as they never looked at me while they were doing the job). He's very concerened with my happiness and satisfaction the whole process through, every time. I REALLY appreciate that after the butch jobs I've had by salons who've won 'best of'.... AND by the artistic director no less!! So, visit Laurent and chat with the front desk ladies, they are super sweet and VERY helpful. Find out for yourself what it feels like after to have a talented superstar like Laurent work on your hair and you'll see the difference. yes, it's a little pricey (only $10 more than my last place) but well worth it, every time. A hairstylist at another salon had turned my blonde hair a dark red/brown. Right before I was going to meet my boyfriend's high school friends for the first time in Dallas. I was really in a bind and looked like a weirdo. My hair was also really damaged by the other salon. Needless to say, I had no intention of allowing the other salon to try to correct the situation. I needed a pro to fix my hair as much as possible, without causing more damage to my hair. Jaques salon did just that. Yes, they did it for a very hefty price. But they really are the best salon I've ever been to. They had a specialist for each part of the service. One person cut my hair and one person did the color. They didn't use foil on my hair and had some other technique that was supposed to be much better for your hair. I really liked the cut and the color was, of course, not the color I really wanted, but I was almost in tears with relief that they brought me back to a dirty blonde. No more unnatural reddish brown. This salon is VERY expensive, but they have a very talented staff. I think my colorist was from Paris. And despite the Frenchy, expensive vibe, everyone was very nice and not snobby. If you're having a hair crisis, this salon might be your savior. Worth every penny. Unfortunately, their pricing is just more than I'd like to shell out on a regular basis. read more

It pains me to even think about the ineptitude of hairdressers in this town. After more than 10 stylists and hairdressers in 4 years I decided to give Dessange a whirl for the following reasons. 1. Norbert the owner is French and that alone raises the "standard" bar 2. The Dessange method, like others who have succeeded in franchising is an actual method and technique 3. If I didn't like the cut it wouldn't have been worse than any other in town and I did survive, yay me. Tiffany did my hair which requires time, a ton of layering and detail. I have a short pixie cut. She did a great job. It's not exactly as I want it as it's a bit too boxy on top, the top layers stick out like on Rod Stewart's head as opposed to my natural wave which is gone. That said, I am definitely going back to Tiffany because I know over time we'll develop the repoire that comes with good communication. I recommend her and the salon. read more

If only I had come to Dessange sooner! I have always had long hair, but over the past five years it's texture has changed, and it lost its shine. I soldiered through the same tired hairstyle and coloring, trying highlights here or there and covering grays. A friend recommended Norbert and his staff to pull me out of the rut. I absolutely loved my experience at Dessange. Norbert took a good long while studying my hair - feeling it and my scalp, turning my head this way and that - and made recommendations that would help better frame my face and add some life back into my style. At first I wasn't so sure I liked the Westlake vibe but I have had very good hair cuts here. Laurent cut my hair today and it is by far the best hair cut I have ever had. I recently returned to Dessange for a cut by Norbert and color by Katie. I had a terrible cut that needed a real fix and Norbert, a visionary, already knew what he was going to do to undo the damage. He was very deliberate in every cut he made and I knew I was in very good hands. I love my hair cut and it's a lot shorter that I ever thought I could wear my hair but because of the outstanding cut he gave me, I am able to wear it the way he meant it to be worn. Katie did my color two weeks after and she is amazing! My color has never been so shiny and appropriate for my hair style. I feel and look 10 years younger. I loved how she took care to make sure that my color was even and worked on it the entire time I was in the chair, when most colorists will let the foil do the work. Dessange does not use foils which ensures an even coloring. I love my color now and I can never, ever go anywhere else. read more

I have been to this salon three times and have been immensely satisfied every time. I have had a color done and twice had haircuts. The hair stylists really consider your lifestyle, face and body shape in providing a haircut. The colorist was also meticulous in taking into account that I had used henna in my hair before. They appear to really value keeping up their education on the newest techniques and styles. I have thick, coarse Asian Indian hair, and the stylists have been phenomenal in taking that into consideration. I have long wavy hair. Not the neat kind: the thinning, greying, frizzy type. I'm 43. Originally from France, I've lived in Austin for 14 years. Back in France, I would have no problem finding a hairdresser who could manage layers on wavy hair. When I moved to Ireland, it got tricky. When I moved to Austin, it became mission impossible. Every hair cut was a disappointment: I would ask for layers, I would get "steps". Not quite the look I was hoping for... After years of frustration and despair I decided to look for a French trained hair dresser and I found Norbert! It's been 7 years and I can honestly say Norbert has saved my hair style, Norbert has made me want to look pretty again! Yes, it comes at a price, but yes, it is TOTALLY worth it! (and btw l'Oréal is not .) Norbert knows the hair cut that is going to work for your face and life style. He surrounds himself with a really good team who is going to style your hair so nicely you feel like the red carpet is waiting for you outside. When I went in I told them what I wanted but they ultimately did what they wanted to do to my hair... which wasn't what I wanted in any way. They cut so much off of my length and botched parts of it. I am very picky about who cuts my hair, and he was recommended to me when I moved to Austin in 2008. Once I started going to him, I haven't changed and don't plan to do so. Very nice, relaxed, low key salon. Quick, efficient service. Really liked both the cut (from Alexis) and the color (from Monique) and have received numerous compliments. I have short, brown (and graying), fine hair - the trifecta of bad hair - but their work makes it look rich, thicker and (dare I say it?) hip. I can even style it myself - at home AND at the gym. It's been a couple of weeks since my visit, I really love my hair! Tiffany and Lindsey gave me a thoughtful and astute consultation, they both were great at helping me figure out what I really wanted. Tiffany cut my hair - so much attention to detail! Then Lindsey applied my color, she's quick and very precise. I decided to get a moisturizing treatment and Josiah gave me a neck and scalp massage that was more relaxing than most of the full body massages I've had. For reals!!! Tiffany dried and styled my hair at the end and OMG such a difference, my hair looked great and I was soooo relaxed. Never again! $304 for a cut, one process color and conditioning! Expensive, ineffective and unpleasant -- the manager screamed at another colorist for 15 minutes while I was waiting for my color to set. My color turned out too light and not at all shinny despite the $45 conditioning treatment. Then I had to argue with my stylist to get her to cut layers. She got revenge by cutting my hair way too short. This was the third time I visited the salon on very short notice. They always have an appointment which must mean a very limited client base. However, products were pushed on me at checkout and I was told I could return them within 30 days. I went back today because the more I thought about it, shampoo and gel for $100 is just too much! So, I got the guts to go back after 10 days and was told I only had a week. Are you kidding me? You told me 30 days! Everything was just overpriced! This review is for Norbert, owner of the salon and a true professional hair artist as well as Rachid a color prodigy. I had relocated from Miami seven years ago and the first year would wait to travel to Florida to have my hair taken care of. I finally decided to try out Dessange Paris, as French people have a knack for the fashionable chic without pretence. I am utterly pleased with the results. My hair is healthier than ever (their products are exceptional and well worth the splurge as a small quantity goes a long way), the cut (Norbert's chef d'oeuvre) gives the impression that I have much more hair than was born with and is very easy to comb at home, and I often get compliments on my highlights. Rachid came up with a phenomenal much lighter highlight on my bangs which allows for less highlights on the rest of the hair and therefore less damage . I go to Rachid every 4-5 weeks now as I refuse to go grey and I am absolutely thrilled with his work (plus he is so cute and charming). Yes, Dessange staff is French and very much so (which I like) but everyone is very friendly, the front desk ladies seem to know every client. Norbert and Rachid start every appointment with a consult, where they evaluate the precedent visit. As I look around, every person leaves the salon looking chic and a la mode in an elegant way. My husband has cuts his hair with Norbert for the past 6 years and he has referred many of his guy friends to Dessange Paris, which coming from him I consider to be a compliment of the highest order. I noticed Norbert has a large and faithful male following as well as teenagers (fortunate crowd) and of course the crusty Westlake ladies. I am a new client and was recommended to Rachid. He is an amazing colorist and was very attentive and really took into consideration the look I was going for. I was there on a Saturday and it was very busy and the parking is a bit of a pain to find. It is a little more than I would like to have payed but he was very good at his job. The salon is very nice and the front desk girl was very sweet and constantly walks around asking the clients if they are doing ok. It is definitely worth the money for the service that you receive.
