Walking into the Ruler Foods on Grand feels less like a grocery run and more like a survival challenge. Between the chaotic parking lot, bare shelves, and no security presence, it's hard to believe this is meant to serve the community with dignity. There are always two employees loudly arguing about a third employee who didn't show up for their shift. It's like walking into the middle of a reality show you didn't sign up for. Meanwhile, the lines are long, the shelves are picked over, and the energy is pure frustration. The store is understaffed, poorly maintained, and clearly neglected. KROGER should be ashamed to let a location fall this far. This neighborhood deserves access to fresh, affordable food in a clean, welcoming environment--not a disorganized mess where drama takes priority over service. Do better, Ruler. Grand deserves more. read more

The main issue here was the service. Cashier "Geneva" and the manager are both very unprofessional--making snarky remarks for having to do their job. Don't visit unless you want to feel criticized for wanting to use a $20 discount on groceries in this economy. read more

A young lady named Keesha at the checkout line and her customer service expertise were five star. Her level of politeness, respect, humor and concern for her shoppers was top notch. Ruler is a good supermarket with Kroger brand foods which are very good and a good amount of name brand products; People also love the prices which are considerably lower than say Whole Foods or Schnucks, while having good selection of meats, produce, bottled and canned goods and bakery and frozen foods. Service is tolerable for the prices and the ambiance is moderately pleasing. Overall, being on a fixed income and a thrifty person, Ruler Foods is a no-brainwr. Could be better. Much less crowded, and typically a much faster shopping experience than the overcrowded and understaffed aldis down the road. The olive oil is the best priced I've come across, and I love the 'private selections' brand of bread. Cheap, quality soda too. A short man with glass behind the counter was rude as shit last time I was there, and hadn't stopped in in about 6 months. Do you miss Kroger? Well they are back!!! Opening new stores in St Louis called Ruler Foods. This one is right across from Tower Grove Park and is very similar to Aldi only here I can pretty much complete my grocery list. They are lacking quite a bit in the produce dept but I wasn't surprised....that might also improve later. The aisles are much wider than other stores as well and you don't feel as crowded as you might at Aldi. The prices are very affordable and I'd recommend making this your first grocery stop. Ruler is about to lose my business. I am tired of selecting an object from the shelf based upon it price, only to find that I had been charged more for the item at the checkout. For example, at the display, sweet potatoes are listed as costing $0.69 per pound. When I arrived home, I discovered that I had been charged $0.79 per pound. This was not an isolated event. When I have noticed a price difference while at the cashier, I was told that they have to charge whatever the computer states, regardless the price listed at the display. I have no confidence is any of the prices listed and so have begun shopping elsewhere, even if it is more inconvenient. read more

Generally as a chain I like the store because they offer discounted organic products, but today I went to the one on grand and it was nothing nice. They don't seem to really have much of anything in comparison to the one off of St. Charles rock Road. read more

Love ruler foods since it has opened. It has a bigger selection than aldi and it is usually less crowded. Misses a star because the produce is not anything special. The potatoes, onions, and apples are small. Typically I will get all my groceries there and go somewhere else entirely for produce. They have manager specials, look out for those! read more

My household loves this store. The staff is extremely pleasant and helpful, the prices are reasonable and the store is very clean. There's great care put into appearances here and it shows. It's very similar to Aldi in setup -- bring a quarter for a cart, bring your own bags or pay 10 cents each for them at checkout, and expect more store brands than name brands. The difference with the store brands is that they are Kroger branded foods, which have a pretty nice level of quality. I haven't had a single issue with any product purchased yet. We frequently find great deals on meat and other items as well, "manager's specials." Best sections/items: Dairy Produce Frozen (tons here, lots of selection) Bread Soda (great price and extremely comprable to name brand, can't say the same for Aldi) Baking supplies and spices We can't get everything here but we couldn't at Aldi either. Shampoo and other hygiene related needs typically require a different stop. Luckily, we have found everything we need in a grocery run here at Ruler. I have been wanting to try out ruler foods for awhile. I'm not an Aldis fan because of many reasons, but a co worker shops regularly at rulers. She pops this movie theater popcorn that's from there ( krogers brand) & it's probably the best store bought popcorn I've had. I was searching for a 3 cheese ranch dressing to make this bow tie pasta salad & I was having difficulty finding it, after Internet search, rulers was supposed to have it, but they didn't. I ended up getting some nice priced bacon, & popcorn. I had already done my grocery shopping the day b4. I did snap some pics for everyone's reference & I'll be back for their reasonably priced eggs, meats, milk, produce ( although it's limited selection). read more

This store is on Grand right by Tower Grove Park, and is at the intersection of Magnolia and Grand Avenue. This store is owned and a subsidiary, I guess, of Kroger because the house brand of Ruler Foods is the Kroger brand. I later found out that it's owned and operated by the same corporate company that owns Kroger grocery stores. It's a box, bulk type of set up where the merchandise is set up on their shelves with the boxes cut open to show the merchandise. It's kinda like a Aldi's store, but Aldi's is much nicer than Ruler Foods. This store is set up kinda like most grocery stores that are bulk, box type stores and has the same sort of departments. There is a produce section, refrigerateurs for things like dairy and freezers for the items that need to be kept frozen. They have a meat counter that has whatever type of meat that you might be looking for. They have the usual type of canned, bottled and boxed food merchandise that you would expect. Some of the pricing seems less expensif that some of the other stores, but on the other hand, it seems like some of the prices are more expensif that other stores. It's comparable to the stuff that you would find elsewhere, but like all things, you actually have to compare the prices. It is a convenience for those who live near by but out of the way for those who don't live near by. It's adequate for what they have. Aldi's is nicer. read more

This place is awesome. They know how to accommodate a budget and the staff goes above and beyond to make sure you have everything you are looking for. Great customer service. I like the fact that they will ask you when they start ringing you up if you need any bags and they will ask you before they tell you your total. There is always employees on the floor stocking the shelves and they are ready to help in any way they can. The people on the floor will ask if you need help and they will help you decide what to get if you are not sure of what to get. Very clean and a huge selection. I love the Kroger Brand. read more

When they first moved into the neighborhood, I was saving close to $60 each week on my grocery bill, but over the last couple months, they've inched up their prices on all of the items people are really wanting to save money on ie, meats, cheeses, paper products. I had hoped this store would be an alternative to Aldi, but it has become more of an "in addition to" kind of place. They still have the best milk prices in town and the only acceptable Velveeta alternative. It's a bummer because I really liked being able to shop at one store instead of running around town getting my staples at one store and hitting up the major chains for their sale items. If they reduce their prices back to what we saw in the beginning, I would give them five stars. read more

I had been shopping at Schnuck's (nearby), Field's Foods, and Culinara (downtown). I have cut my grocery bill down quite a bit since they came into the neighborhood. As a vegan there's very little convenience foods for me. Even the veggie burgers they have there are not vegan but they have cut my grocery budget to about $25 dollars a week or so as a single man which isn't too bad at all even if I do have to cook more. read more

Felt humiliated by manager's treatment. I have been shopping in Ruler since one year. Before that, I was doing so in Kroger since 2005 (being in University of Kentucky). I love Ruler, thats the store I always go and recommended to many in Saint Louis University, where I joined as a faculty last year. But today, I felt so humiliated by the treatment of store manager. I returned a red bell pepper while checking out, but the money was not deducted from the final bill. So I asked the cashier, he called the manager. The manager came, tried to convince me that nothing was wrong, but then when he realized, they were wrong, he started saying to himself and the security guard "I am not going to take so much trouble, I'll pay back myself". He and the security guard also started collecting pennies from their pocket, with the security guard smirking. The manager was so disrespectful through his body language, may be because I was an international person, a woman alone and was asking for returning "one dollar", his body language showed that "why I was asking for one dollar, you should let it go". His attitude was that "I was a beggar", without admitting that it was their fault. This was such a trivial matter, turned into humiliation. I am pointing this out because I do not want Ruler's name to go down, just because of one manager and one security guard. Usually, this sort of behavior never happens in Ruler, I hope, someone in the Management team, sees this message and talk to the store manager and security guard. So glad this moved in the neighborhood! VERY similar vibe to Aldi. They have a pretty standard selection - lots of well-priced produce (not an extensive selection but plenty of good stuff). The staff go out of their way to help and have been very kind. If they don't have something you're looking for, they welcome the feedback. After having shopped here several times, I feel ready to write a review, not only of the store, but of its future in this location. Let me begin by saying that I'm extraordinarily pleased to have a store of this quality in my immediate neighborhood. (I am a resident of Shaw.) The history of food stores at this location (originally one of the late, lamented, and locally owned and operated National Supermarkets) in recent year has been less than stellar. The two previous tenants were both lacking in many regards, not the least of which was an ongoing issue with cleanliness and sanitation--the store always smelled of something bad, and if it wasn't spoiled food, then it was mold and mildew from faulty refrigeration and a leaking roof. The food selection of both retailers was minimal, and one seemed to rely chiefly on liquor, tobacco and phone card sales, as well as paycheck cashing, for its principal business. Customer service wa practically nonexistent. It was the sort of place you would hit in a pinch, only if time and expedience were of the utmost importance. Now, here comes Ruler Foods. Frankly, when I saw the sign go up, I thought, oh, here's more of the same, another cut-rate retailer, another place to run for a dozen eggs or a quart of milk if I run out unexpectedly. It wasn't until a friend actually took me to the store that I noticed, for one, how much the property had been improved--the front of the store, including the sidewalk, had been rethought and much of it replaced, and the parking lot configuration had been significantly changed, much for the better. And on entering the store, mirabile dictu, the once-omnipresent smell of spoilage and mold was gone. The floor was clean (as was everything else in the store), the stock neat and well-ordered, the aisles wide and well-arranged, and the selection much better than I had ever expected. (The obvious business model here is that of Aldi, and the comparisons are inevitable, but I would rate the selection as "Aldi-plus.") The prices also grabbed my attention right away (super-cheap dairy and meats and equally low prices on lots of pantry staples), so much so that I immediately said to myself I had to come back to investigate further on my own when I had more time. And then there were the Kroger store brands (which makes up most of the stock)--I have to confess, I am old enough to remember riding in the shopping cart at our neighborhood Kroger store, which was my mom's favorite grocer, so I guess I'm more than a little nostalgic and sentimental about that logo, which hasn't changed since I was a toddler (a very long time, ha). The logo aside, I've been impressed with the quality of what I have purchased, especially given the prices. Now, all that said, here's the downside: I'm absolutely flabbergasted at the lack of promotional support Kroger gives to its Ruler Foods stores. For one, there is zero internet presence: no website (???!!!), no Facebook, no Twitter, no social media whatsoever. Moreover, I don't recall any mailings/circulars sent to neighboring homes (I live a few blocks from the store) for the store's opening, and there hasn't been anything since. (Aldi--which has a store on Grand as well--by comparison, issues a weekly circular that is sent to all residents of our neighborhood.) Kroger is a grocery behemoth, the largest grocery retailer in the U.S. There's no question it has the resources to promote these stores. I just hope that Kroger isn't relying on word of mouth alone for promotion. For one, the lackluster recent history of this location will put some people off and lead them to assume that Ruler is more of the same: a smelly, second-rate, only-in-emergencies alternative. This store should be doing gangbusters business at this location--located in the heart of Shaw and Tower Grove East, and with Compton Heights immediately to the north--they are the only food store in the immediate area, closer than either of the closest Schnuck's locations, as well as Shop and Save and Aldi. And it's as least as good as Aldi, and price-wise it beats Schnuck's and Shop and Save on many fronts. And if some folks in the 'hood, especially Baby Boomers and retirees, knew it was Kroger behind the name, that would be a huge boost as well, as Kroger had a huge following in the St. Louis market, even though they pulled out of it some 29 years ago. Just today, I spoke with an associate at the store, and I asked how things were going. (I should mention that all of the store staff are solicitous, helpful, and friendly--another huge change from what had passed for customer service with the previous retailers.) The associate said it wasn't performing as well as had been hoped (not too surprising, with almost non-existent promotion). I hope this isn't a sign of a continuing trend. This store is a good thing for this neighborhood, and this neighborhood can be a good thing for this store. Let's hope corporate has the good sense to capitalize on that synergy. read more
