I've been here 3 times and have only gotten pancakes, so obviously I like their pancakes but cannot comment on the other offerings. The basic pancake (to which you can add various fill-ins like fruits, nuts, chocolate chips) is huge and very fluffy. They also sometimes have specialty pancakes in different, which come as 2 regular-sized pancakes instead of a single massive one. The specialty pancakes I tried were also very good but, for me, don't quite beat out the perfect texture and novelty of the giant pancake. The tea on the menu is from Twinings, and I drink a lot of nice tea, so honestly Twinings doesn't really cut it for me anymore for black tea. Maybe I'd get it again if I really wanted tea with my food but if I have time next time, I might just grab tea somewhere else. If you like herbal teas though, they do have a variety of herbal teas, and I don't mind the cheaper brands of herbal so much, so that's nice to have. The waitstaff is always friendly (I've had both college-age and older waiters) and the kitchen was pretty fast, but I've only been on weekdays where it's not too busy, so can't say how it is when they get busy on weekends when the place is crowded. The only complaints I have are that one time there was a little bit of an unpleasant smell in the building (this was my second visit, it was not a problem again when I visited a few weeks ago), and they keep it really cold during the summer (if it's 90+ F out, anything less than 70 inside doesn't feel good for more than a few minutes). read more

My service here was great. I got the power breakfast which comes with a pancake, eggs, and home fries. We also did mimosas which was a great addition to the brunch. I had brought my dog here for the outside seating at the waiter consistently checked on him filling up his water. The atmosphere is nice with a great view of kirkwood. read more

The Village Deli is known for it's amazing breakfast options, including the famous 'pancake the size of a hubcap' that is somehow perfectly cooked even though it's huge. But rarely is it thought of as a lunch place, and it should be. I, for the first time ever, ordered a lunch item and was seriously impressed. Kids decided to grace us with their presence for lunch (both are in college) and while I'd like to think it was because they missed us, it's more likely they wanted free food. Whatever, it was good to see them and one wanted breakfast food and the other lunch, so the village deli was the choice. My wife ordered the BLT with hot chips, which she said is her go-to every time. She used to work down the street, so she's a regular. I am not a BLT fan, so didn't try it - even for Yelp I'm not touching a fully dressed BLT - but she loved it as usual. I had the Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich. I usually get breakfast but I had a big breakfast earlier and was craving a sandwich. Glad I made the choice. It was amazing. Huge portion of chicken, plenty of ham and Swiss. If you've read my reviews, you know I had them keep the mustard away from it, so can't speak to that. The hot chips were great. They make their own potato chips, they are served hot/warm, and they might need a bit more salt, but better than french fries. Kid 1 (the one who wanted lunch) ordered breakfast. Ugh. Paxton's Potatoes and the breakfast croissant. Paxton's are basically hash brown/home fries with cheese, gravy and chives. You can add an egg (I suggest it) and the croissant is what you think it is - croissant and egg sandwich, with or without protein addition. Both are great. Kid2 had his usual power breakfast which is a drink plus two eggs, home fries, and one (plenty for two people) pancake. He gets his plain, I suggest banana and walnut additions. He's allergic to nuts so probably a bad idea, lest we need the epi pen. He's a growing boy and still gave me half the pancake if that gives you any idea of the size. Great service as usual. It was a week day, so not too crowded for lunch. Their motto is 'Eat and Get Out' but during lunch it's probably not an issue. On the weekends, the place is slammed full all day - expect a wait and them to rush you a bit. On Sunday it's best to beat the church crowd. TLDR: Eat here if you've visiting your kid at college, looking for a good lunch or great breakfast, and never ever order two pancakes. read more

We tried Paxton's Potatoes, breakfast tacos and a pancake with strawberries. The breakfast tacos were alright, but the stars of the show were Paxton's Potatoes and the pancake. The potatoes are topped with sausage gravy, cheese, scrambled eggs and chives. The pancake was probably 10" in diameter and each bite was delicious. One quirky thing to point out is the ceiling in the dining room to the left dips downward like a reverse A frame and the point was right above our table which felt a bit claustrophobic. read more

Had breakfast here and we were both happy with what we got. The French toast had the option of a fresh fruit topping, which came with a massive portion of strawberries, and the breakfast tacos had an excellent jalapeño & avocado sauce. The staff got us seated quickly, and the food didn't take long to get to us. My only complaint, as is often the case nowadays, is the price. This place is a campus icon at Indiana University, right on Kirkwood. Don't let the name Deli mislead you. I think they are more known for breakfast than lunch. It's actually more of a dinner than a deli. But they serve a good solid breakfast. I derped in on a weekday, so I had no wait and the experience was great. I have passed the place up many times on a weekend morning, when Kirkwood and the hung over folks waiting for breakfast are a bit of a mess from the night before. First they dont have any physical menus, its all digital. I dont care for that at all when I am eating inside. This place was not very busy at all, which is fine. Some reviews say its always busy and thats just not the case. The ambiance is extremely outdated and their seating is bad for most people. Now for the good is the cornbeef hash. Very tasty but its overpriced and you dont get much of it. The omelet was average at best, looks better than it is. You have to pay for each item in your omelet. Theres a base price and you add from there. I have no liking to that concept at all. The bacon was bacon bits in the omelet which is fine if its actual bacon cooked up and sliced down but seemed to be store bought. All in all theres no way id come back here. If you're looking for an affordable breakfast in Bloomington, this is the place for you. Tons of options in the menu, all at a reasonable price. This place always seems to be busy on the weekends, so you might have to wait a few minutes. I went during IU gradation weekend at about 9 am on Saturday, and we were seated immediately at a table outside, but a few minutes later, there were several groups waiting on the sidewalk to be seated. The Village Deli is right in Kirkwood, so there isn't much convenient parking. You'll likely have to walk a few blocks to get here. Overall the food was pretty tasty! I ordered 1 large (and I do mean large) banana pancake, and an order of Paxton's Potatoes, which cost a little over $10. I definitely recommend the potatoes! My sister ordered the Huevos Rancheros, which were also very tasty, especially because of the green salsa! read more

This place does breakfast right! Giant pancakes you can custom order. You can add up to three toppings, I did bananas, peanut butter chips, and chocolate chips. All the people complaining about "slow service" have conveniently omitted the fact that, on weekends, there's a line out the door--of /course/ there's a wait. The staff was entirely polite, and the food was spectacular. (I'd definitely recommend their pumpkin pancakes whenever they're in season.) My only gripe is that it was a bit pricey (I do wish they'd put their prices on their online menu), but honestly, that's likely because I eat more than the average person to begin with, and as a college student, my idea of what's "pricey" probably differs from the average adult's.
